10 Tips for Being Your Own Best Advocate

Jane-Become-An-Adult_Banner

If you’re starting out in your career or just landed a new job, it can be challenging to advocate for yourself. Asking your manager for a promotion, nailing a job interview, or even getting your foot in the door for a dream job may seem like daunting tasks, but standing up for what you want and need is an important skill to learn no matter what career you want. In our How to Quit Your Day Job series, we ask female entrepreneurs and successful women how they started their own companies or landed their perfect profession. Here, 10 career superstars divulge how they developed their ability to advocate for themselves.

1. Act like you own the place.Jane West, CEO of Jane West, a cannabis company, says, “Just go in there and act like you own the place.” She shares, “When I first started in the industry, I told myself, ‘I am not a CEO.’ I honestly never thought of myself like that. But over time I watched all these other CEOs manage their businesses, and that inspired me. I realized if I was going to develop all of the products I wanted to bring into existence through my company, it would have to be my responsibility as CEO to work up the business relationships and figure out the designs and start selling the products. Now it seems obvious that my title should be CEO, but it’s all about finding your confidence.” (Photo via Jason Travis)

2. Play to win.Natalia Butler, a Ben & Jerry’s flavor guru, shares how she applied for her job at the popular ice cream company. “One day, I saw the job posting for Ben & Jerry’s. I originally had no intentions to move, as my career was growing, but I applied and said, ‘Hey, this is my dream job.’ I said to myself, ‘I might not get it, but if I don’t play, I won’t win.’ After a set of interviews, I got a call from the recruiter that, out of hundreds of applicants, I got it. I cried in the parking lot for about 30 minutes out of happiness. Taking the job at Ben & Jerry’s was the best decision I have ever made.” (Photo via Ben & Jerry’s)

3. Read inspiring stories. In 2016, Lisa Hunt was one of the 100 makers, artists, and entrepreneurs featured in In the Company of Women ($35), a curated collection of inspiring women by Grace Bonney, the founder of Design*Sponge. When Hunt launched her first collection of prints in 2015, she submitted them to Design*Sponge for coverage and was featured in the “What’s in Your Tool Box” column on the website, which put her on Bonney’s radar. Says Hunt of the book: “It’s the book I wish I had when I was a young girl in need of confirmation that women that looked like me were out there in the world living fearless and creative lives. That I can be a unique and imperfect individual and my creative voice will be valued and is needed in the world.” (Photo via Kelly Marshall)

4. Trust yourself.Grace Kraaijvanger, creator of The Hivery, a co-working space for women, says, “Your life is a creative process. There is no finish line and no defined outcome. You’re the one who feels like she’s standing on the edge of the cliff with nerves in your stomach and wings on your back. You’re the one who noticed that fear and exhilaration live in the same place in your belly. It’s you who knows that you have to keep going. It’s you who knows that you love getting advice, but ultimately you already know.” (Photo via Ana Kamin)

5. Challenge the status quo. Before BFFs Amy Jain and Daniella Yacobovsky started BaubleBar, they had no background in fashion or jewelry, but they didn’t let that stop them. They were passionate about accessories and saw a void when their shopping needs weren’t met. “Don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo, as every great company starts out as a crazy idea! Deciding we were going to do it ourselves and start BaubleBar meant getting over our fear of the unknown and going for it,” says Yacobovsky. (Photo via BaubleBar)

6. Don’t worry about everyone liking you. From the start, Cora Harrington, founder of The Lingerie Addict, was clear about what she wanted her blog to be, but not everyone else was on board. Initially, a lot of lingerie brands didn’t want to talk with The Lingerie Addict because it didn’t have the right look, so Cora focused on her readers instead. “What a shame it would have been to stop in those early days because other people disliked my blog. Be nice, but don’t worry too much about everyone liking you,” says Harrington, who has grown her site into a six-figure blog and penned a book called In Intimate Detail ($25). (Photo via The Lingerie Addict)

7. Listen to your tribe. Even though activist Alexis Jones, founder of ProtectHer — a program that addresses domestic violence and sexual assault on college campuses — is hugely accomplished, she faces self-doubt like anyone else. “It’s hard as hell to have a vision and bring it to fruition,” admits Jones. “Without a support system and powerful tribe to remind you that you’re capable of doing extraordinary things, it’s easy to listen to the lies that exist within yourself.” To combat her fear and self-doubt, she relies on the knowledge that her friends and family will make sure she doesn’t give up. (Photo via ProtectHer)

8. Be unapologetically yourself. Molly Hayward, founder of Cora, a brand of feminine products, says she spent much of her 20s trying to be what others envisioned as a business professional. “I wanted to fit in with the crowd that looked and sounded like the person I thought I should be,” she reflects. “It took a lot of time, introspection, and formative experiences for me to realize that I could build a successful company on my own terms, as my free-spirited and wild self, if I was willing to be brave enough to do things my way, own the things I cared about, and not apologize for any of it. In fact, when you’re unapologetically yourself is when people actually start to respect you.” (Photo via Cora)

9. Work for yourself.Shauna Gartz, who started her own event planning company Shauna Loves Planning, is the mom to three boys and loves that she creates her own work schedule. “I can’t tell you how many times I thought about creating my own wedding and event planning company before I finally did it. I was pretty sure I could do it, but for years, doubt always found a way to creep in. The safety net of an employer was too alluring. Until one day, I decided that I don’t want to look back on my life with regrets. I would much rather have tried and failed than never even tried. Not only am I doing what I love and working for myself, but I also get to control how much I work and when I work,” says Gartz. (Photo via Anne Liles Photography)

10. Pursue what you love. Out of college, Candace Nelson, founder of Sprinkles, worked as a financial analyst at an investment bank and then in business development at an internet company. “When the bottom dropped out of that world in 2000, I, along with so many, was out of a job. I decided to go back to school to pursue something I really loved, so I enrolled in pastry school and upon graduation, started a custom cake business out of my house,” she says. “At the time, cupcakes were still kid’s lunch box fare with shortening-laden frosting and garishly colored, waxy sprinkles. The cupcake was in desperate need of reinvention, and that’s when I became obsessed with the idea of a cupcakes-only bakery, and Sprinkles was born.” (Photo via Dane Deaner)

The best working relationships are built on trust, so when it's lacking between you and your boss, even simple day-to-day tasks can become seriously frustrating. Not to mention, the lack of belief in your abilities may cause your career growth to stall over time and leave you feeling incapable or insecure.

So, if you've noticed some subtle (or not-so-subtle) signs that your boss doesn't seem to trust you, it's important to recognize and nip them in the bud early. Whether it's constant second-guessing, micro-managing, or an overall sense of being sidelined, here's how to spot the red flags, address them, and get your career back on track.

Scroll to see the 8 signs your boss doesn't actually trust you at work.

1. Micromanaging

RDNE Stock project

One of the clearest signs that your boss doesn't trust you is incessant micromanaging. If they're always looking over your shoulder, questioning every decision you make, or checking in on task progress more often than necessary, they likely have doubts about your abilities.

Employees who are micromanaged often feel undermined and less confident in their work. After all, it's hard to perform at your best if you feel like you're constantly being watched.

If you're dealing with micromanaging, take a step back and consider the situation. Is there something in your recent work performance or behavior that might've caused your boss to start hawking you?

If not, you can spark an open conversation with your boss, express how their management style makes you feel, and ask how processes can be changed to give you a bit more independence.

2. Your Suggestions Are Ignored

Tiger Lily

Next, if you regularly offer up ideas or suggestions in the office and your boss quickly dismisses or completely overlooks them, it might suggest that they don't trust your judgment or value your input.

If you believe you're not being taken seriously and your experience is being disregarded, you can have a one-on-one conversation with your boss. Make it clear that you'd like to contribute by saying something like, "I noticed some of my suggestions haven't been taken into consideration, and I'd appreciate feedback on how I can better align my ideas with your vision moving forward."

3. You're Overlooked For Projects And Promotions

Yan Krukau

Have important projects or big promotions consistently passed you by? It may indicate that your boss doesn't trust you to handle the increased responsibility.

Being left out of assignments or opportunities to climb the corporate ladder is discouraging and can make employees feel as if their skills or potential are underappreciated.

Now, it's possible your boss genuinely isn't aware that you're interested in taking on more. Either way, it's best to talk about your career goals with your boss and let them know you're eager to contribute more and grow with your company.

4. You're Kept In The Dark

Kaboompics.com

Many people have had the dreaded experience of not being invited to a classmate's birthday party in elementary school. Being kept in the dark at the office is a similar feeling.

Do you often find yourself being taken by surprise at work, whether by personnel changes, brand-new projects, or meetings you weren't invited to? When you're left out of key conversations and excluded from any decision-making, it could mean your boss questions your ability to handle information or believes you don't need to know what's going on.

In this scenario, the best thing you can do is address the issue head-on. Show that you'd like to be more involved in decision-making processes by telling your boss something like, "I'd really appreciate being included in important discussions as I believe I can contribute valuable insights."

5. You Feel Isolated In The Office

cottonbro studio

Aside from the boardroom, companies tend to have their own social culture. So, you may be getting left out of casual office conversations, team activities, or informal gatherings, like happy hour drinks on Fridays.

If your boss is the person behind your exclusion, it may signal that they aren't comfortable inviting you into their inner office circle. This alienation can lead you to feel alone and make it difficult to forge better relationships with your overall team.

You can try to bridge the gap by asking your boss for more collaborative work opportunities or planning after-hours get-togethers for your team on your own.

6. You're Not Allowed To Take Initiative

RDNE Stock project

Another red flag that your boss doesn't trust your abilities or judgment is if you're required to ask for permission before taking any action.

It can be incredibly limiting to personal and professional growth when you're not given the freedom to take initiative because you always have to receive direct orders or wait for approval on your next move. Don't be afraid to have a transparent conversation with your boss about the lack of autonomy in your current role and ask for ways to show them that you're capable of acting independently.

7. You Are Never Given Feedback

Kaboompics.com

It's easy to feel uncertain about where you stand in your role if you've never been given any feedback. Your boss might doubt your ability to handle constructive criticism or doesn't have faith that you can better your performance with their comments.

To handle this, take the initiative and ask for regular feedback from your boss directly, whether that's on a monthly or quarterly basis. You can phrase the request like, "I'd really appreciate hearing your thoughts on my recent projects so I can keep improving."

8. You're Frequently Criticized

cottonbro studio

Finally, in contrast to never receiving feedback, you might have a boss who never stops criticizing your work. Not only can this leave you questioning your skills, but it can be unmotivating, making you feel as if it's impossible to make your boss happy.

You'll have to determine if your boss' ongoing concerns are valid or not. And regardless of what you believe, you should have a serious conversation with them.

Ask your boss for specific examples of what needs improvement, as well as steps you can take to meet their expectations. Showing that you're receptive to their feedback and actively looking for ways to work together on boosting your performance can help rebuild some trust.

Costco just restocked a very famous Starbucks drink, so if you’re a big fan of their Refreshers, you’re going to want to make a beeline to your nearest store ASAP.

Scroll on for all the details about shopping the Starbucks Pink Drink at Costco!

Costco

That’s right – Costco just added the bottled version of Starbucks’ Pink Drink to their shelves! This ready-to-drink version has the same “fruity and refreshing” effect you’d expect from the cafe favorite, as it’s made with the chain’s Strawberry Acai Refresher base and accented with coconut milk.

Costco

Each 8-ounce bottle is dairy-free, vegan, and has only 90 calories. The pack Costco is selling comes complete with 12 bottles, so you can easily stock your fridge with a fun little sip.

Starbucks

Costco fan account @costcobuys shared the newly-restocked Pink Drink with their Instagram followers and highlighted that their Costco location had the item listed for $16.99.

However, Costco’s website lists the 12-pack for $19.99, so the exact price may vary based on where you live.

Starbucks

Regardless, that puts each bottle of the Starbucks drink at around $2 each, which is significantly less money than what you’d spend for a freshly-made bev at a Starbucks location.

The Starbucks Pink Drink typically goes for around $5, plus tax. If you want to save on your Starbies habit, this new Costco find is a must!

Costco

Costco also carries many more Starbucks items in bulk like instant coffee, whole coffee beans, Nespresso pods, and even hot cocoa mix.

Any Hunger Games fan will agree that one of the best parts about Catching Fire is that it offers a whole new look at Haymitch Abernathy's character. The mentor (played by Woody Harrelson in the film franchise) won the 2nd Quarter Quell, and the brief mention of his Games totally captured fans' attention, leading to fan art, fanfiction, and even some viral short films. Well, we're finally getting the full story thanks to a brand new Haymitch Hunger Games book, just in time for spring 2025!

Here's everything we know about Sunrise On The Reaping, coming March 2025.

Who's narrating the audiobook?

Cam McLeod/Paramount

It was confirmed on February 3 that Yellowstone actor Jefferson White will narrate the Sunrise on the Reaping audiobook.

“It's an honor to be a small part of a world I’ve loved for so long — Suzanne Collins is a genius and it's equal parts exhilarating and terrifying to be back in Panem," he told People.

See The Official 'Sunrise On The Reaping' Cover

Amazon

The Sunrise on the Reaping cover was unveiled the morning of October 16 and it's just as beautiful as we hoped! It continues the tradition from the other books of a bold background color with gold and white accents, and I'll admit I was surprised when I first saw the snake and the mockingjay. The snake is obviously a nod to President Snow, and we know that both Lucy Gray Baird and Katniss Everdeen are two songbirds the President was never able to shake. Will Haymitch Abernathy become one as well?

In the original books, Haymitch starts out as an angry man with no friends or family who always has a drink in his hand, but by the end of Mockingjay, he's a wise, caring father figure for Katniss — and I'm betting Sunrise on the Reaping will show us plenty of those character traits as he has to make his way through the Hunger Games.

One detail on the cover that concerns me is the fact the snake and the songbird are connected, and that a sun sits between them. David Levithan, Scholastic's vice president, publisher, and editorial director told TODAY that just like the other covers, this one features "one of the central themes of the series: how conflicting forces can be connected by their common nature, the songbird and the snake springing from the same source."

When is Sunrise on the Reaping coming out?

Lionsgate

Sunrise on the Reaping will hit stores on March 18, 2025.

What is the Sunrise on the Reaping going to be about?

Scholastic/Instagram

The new Hunger Games book is called Sunrise on the Reaping. According to the official announcement, the story will take place 24 years before The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the 50th Games' reaping. While fans had hoped the story would chronicle Haymitch's victory, it wasn't confirmed until October 16. Read the full synopsis below:

"As the day dawns on the 50th annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes. Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves. When Haymitch’s name is called, he can feel all his dreams break. He’s torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who’s nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town. As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he’s been set up to fail. But there’s something in him that wants to fight ... and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena."

Can you preorder Sunrise on the Reaping?

Murray Close/Lionsgate

Yes, you can pre-order the book now!

What happened in Haymitch's Hunger Games?

Lionsgate

As a Quarter Quell, the 50th Hunger Games had a twist. Just like the 75th Hunger Games pulled the tributes from the existing victors, the 50th required double the tributes, meaning Haymitch (who was 16 years old at the time) was one of 48 tributes, not 24.

The arena was a breathtaking landscape with a forest, snow-capped mountains, and beautiful flowers. But Haymitch quickly realized the beauty was a trap, and that everything in the arena was poisonous. He was able to outsmart the rest of the competitors, but after he used the forcefield against the other remaining tribute to secure his victory (a move that offended the Capitol), President Snow retaliated by killing his family and his girlfriend.

Is Sunrise on the Reaping about Haymitch?

Murray Close/Lionsgate

Yes, Sunrise on the Reaping is about Haymitch Abernathy and his win during the 50th Hunger Games.

Gisele Bündchen is officially a mom of three! The supermodel gave birth to the newest member of her family (and her first baby with BF Joaquim Valente) "recently," according to TMZ, who first reported the birth. I love any and all baby news, so I couldn't help myself from digging for details when I first saw the report!

Here's everything we know about Gisele Bündchen's new baby with Joaquim Valente, her first since split from Tom Brady.

Joaquim Valente and Gisele Bündchen's baby is here!

Gisele Bündchen shares two kids with ex-husband Tom Brady, a 15-year-old son named Benjamin Rein and 12-year-old daughter Vivian Lake. According to TMZ, while we haven't gotten an official birthday yet, the baby was born recently, and "mom and the baby are healthy." That's the best news yet!

Gisele and Joaquim were also waiting until giving birth to find out the baby's gender, and a source tells People the couple welcomed a baby boy. Stay tuned from an official announcement from the couple — if they choose to share, of course. The source also reveals the baby's middle name is River, which continues the tradition of Gisele choosing water-related middle names for her kids!

"Gisele and Joaquim are happy for this new chapter in their life and they're looking forward to creating a peaceful and loving environment for the whole family," a source told People in the fall of 2024.

Just a week ago, Gisele was active on Instagram, posting a video compilation that's set to Nate Broskii's "Memories Don't Fade Away" and features multiple clips, including a gorgeous beach sunset. "Happiness is an inside job," she says in the caption. "Remember, you are the only one who has the power to create the life you want to live."

We can't wait to see how Gisele's next chapter unfolds! Because if there's anyone who can inspire us to create our dream life, it's her.

Congratulations to Gisele Bündchen and Joaquim Valente on their new baby! Check out the latest news on Lily Collins and Charlie McDowell's new baby while you're at it.
