How All the Streaming Service Options Could Give You Subscription Fatigue (and How to Avoid It)

Apple recently revealed more details about its upcoming streaming service, and while there is no firm release date just yet, the upcoming content offerings — featuring everyone from Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston to Oprah Winfrey and more — mean even more must-see TV alongside the wealth of content already available from Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime.

And the tech giant isn’t the only major company set to join the streaming race in 2019: Disney’s long-awaited service, Disney+, is set for a late-2019 rollout (complete with big-budget originals), as is Warner Media’s. With each service offering something a little different from the next, it’s tempting to sign up for multiple providers. But option overload is becoming a very real problem, and if you haven’t already, you might soon find yourself suffering from what the industry is starting to refer to as “subscription fatigue.”

“While consumers appreciate the freedom to customize their entertainment experiences, they don’t enjoy the friction — the hassles, responsibilities, and even vulnerabilities — that can result from choosing options à la carte,” a recent digital media trends report from Deloitte concluded. The reasons for feeling burned out included shows disappearing from services, difficulties discovering content, and, of course, mounting costs — not to mention the struggle to attempt to keep up with the latest and greatest TV shows and movies.

“I can’t wait to cut the cord and simply subscribe to: Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV, Prime Video, HBO Go, Starz, Showtime, Cinemax, Hulu, ESPN+, YouTube TV, Sling TV,” author Ben Carlson sarcastically tweeted after the recent Apple TV+ announcement. His sentiment hits even harder when you consider that, beyond viewing options, consumers now also have several choices for music streaming services, from Apple Music to Spotify to YouTube and more, as well as an increasing number of digital paywalls requiring — yep — subscriptions in order to read online content offerings.

If the digital streaming revolution was a reaction to bloated and overpriced cable TV options, which often saw consumers paying for channels they didn’t even watch, it now seems poised to present a similar problem. It’s not likely that the business will pivot yet again so quickly, so in the meantime, there are ways to try to stay on top of those mounting subscriptions (and their resultant credit card bills).

Many services, for example, offer free trials for short periods of time. It’s a cost-effective way to at least log in and see if you like what’s on offer. If you don’t, you can cancel once the trial period is up. (But don’t forget, or you’ll end up subscribed to yet another service.)

If you like everything and need help narrowing down your options, word-of-mouth referrals from friends with similar and trusted taste is a good start. And ultimately, it’s important to be honest with yourself about your viewing habits, including how much free viewing time you have and what you tend to spend it on. (No judgment — we also watch Netflix rom-coms at least twice each.)

Once you have your slate of subscriptions, it’s helpful to periodically review what you’re paying for and consider whether you’re getting your money’s worth based on how much you’re watching. It’s not a perfect system, of course, as it does require both regular attention to your credit card statements and several manual steps to cancel a service. But it’s easy to sign back up should you change your mind.

The so-called streaming wars aren’t going to slow down anytime soon. By taking charge of your subscription life, though, you’ll be better equipped to navigate the changing media landscape.

Reboots and rewatches are all the rage right now, and for good reason. They're nostaltic, they're cozy, and they really make me wish I was a teenager in the 00s. In addition to Scott Patterson saying he's "always hopeful" for Gilmore Girls to come back, Keri Russell just revealed how much she'd love to revisit Felicity, too!

  • Keri Russell reveals she'd "totally do" a Felicity reboot — on one condition.
  • Scott Foley also says "it would be really nice" to get the cast back together.
  • Felicity ran from 1998-2002 on The WB and is now available to stream on Hulu.

    Are they rebooting Felicity?

While promoting The Diplomat season 2, Keri Russell said she'd love to bring the series back if the story made sense. “I would totally do that if it was the right stuff,” she told E! News. “Mandy had a good pitch for it, actually. A really good pitch for, like… life wasn’t going great and, you know, didn’t work out. And she was supposed to be all these things. And then she bumps into someone…Never say never!"

In case you haven't seen the show (which ran from 1998-2002 and is available to stream on Hulu, FYI), Felicity follows Keri Russell's titular character, who's in for a rude awakening when she follows her high school crush to college in New York City. But once she's there, she realizes just how big the Big Apple really is.

The series also starred Scott Speedman as Ben Covington, Scott Foley as Noel Crane, Amy Jo Johnson as Julie Emrick, and Tangi Miller as Elena Tyler. Keri actually said they "all still talk all the time!”

“They’re like my total pals,” she says.

What else has the cast said about bringing Felicity back?

    Getty Images

Scott Foley told ET that he'd consider coming back for another installment of Felicity, even though he's been against a reboot in the past. "I had always said I wouldn't — you know, there's no reason to do anything," he said. "But just to be with them again, I think would be really nice... When we did the 20th reunion down in Texas at the [ATX Television Festival], we were onstage in a panel answering questions, and I missed being with them."

"I don't know if it could ever really happen, you know, Felicity was such a specific show at a specific time that took took place in a specific moment in people's lives," he continues. "And it's really hard to recapture — especially with the amount of gray going on right now."

In March, Greg Gunberg (who played Sean Blumberg) hinted that there'd be some "GIGANTIC Felicity News Coming VERY Soon."

So are we getting a Felicity reboot? It looks like, in Keri Russell's words, never say never!

I can give you two reasons why Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard's marriage sits high on my admiration list — Veronica Mars and Punk'd. I was in barely in middle school when these two stars graced my TV screen on their respective shows, but they've always stood out to me. Discovering they were dating just seemed to make sense in the grand scheme of good romantic pairings and — as we can see — it turns out Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard think so too.

From their first meet-cute that wasn't actually that cute to the ways they've loved each other through dark times, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard almost make being in love look easy. Here's a breakdown of some of the most important moments of their relationship timeline.

Kristen Bell And Dax Shepard's Relationship Timeline:

2007: Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard Meet + Begin Dating

The couple haven't been shy about revealing their first time meeting was exactly love at first sight. Kristen Bell admitted during an Instagram Q&A in 2018 that they actually met at a party for producer Shauna Robertson. E! News recalled that the actress said, "2 weeks later I saw him at a hockey game and he asked for the gum in my mouth." Knowing Dax's personality, that actually checks out.

She also revealed his unconventional pickup line. "Truly, his first text to me was: ‘Hi. My name is Dax. I violated your privacy and got your number from Shauna. How do you feel about that,'' she remembered.

Though they did start dating, Kristen regularly trolls Dax about the time they briefly broke up. She told Popsugar, "He sat me down and said, 'I can't have this right now. I think you're wonderful, but I am still dating other people.' And then I, like, liquefied and fell to the ground, but I felt incredibly respected that he had the balls to tell me we weren't in the same place."

2009: Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard Work As Co-Stars During Filming Of When in Rome

Who can forget the hilarious rom-com movie When in Rome? Kristen starred as the 'unlucky in love' main character Beth who finds herself being pursued by a handful of romantic prospects after she picks up coins from a fountain that's supposed to grant love those who dare to take from it. Dax played the role of Gale, a model who was very into himself, and it was funny watching them interact on-screen.

According to People, the couple got engaged shortly after filming ended.

September 1, 2018: Kristen Bell And Dax Shepard Celebrate His Sobriety Journey

Dax Shepard has never been ashamed to talk about his sobriety journey and shared a personal moment with that made him question everything He appeared on Blake Griffin's podcast, The Pursuit of Healthiness to talk about his struggles in 2021. "What I would do is I would get sober for movies. I cared more about movies — it was the only thing I was more addicted to was being in movies — and so I would get sober for movies and then in between movies it was getting more and more dangerous," he recalled.

It wasn't until he caught a glimpse of himself in a mirror during a trip to Hawaii that he realized something was wrong. He remembered thinking, "I have every single thing I've ever wanted, and I'm at my lowest point emotionally and something has got to be very broken about that. If I have everything I said was going to make me feel good and I feel terrible, I've got to look at some other thing."

To celebrate her husband's commitment to remaining sober, Kristen wrote a heartfelt message on Instagram to encourage him to keep going. "I'm so proud that you have never been ashamed of your story, but instead shared it widely, with the hope it might inspire someone else to become the best version of themselves...I love you more than I ever thought I could love anyone, and I want you to know, I see you. I see how hard you work," a portion of the lengthy message reads.

Addiction in any form is never easy to navigate so we admire how much Kristen's been supportive of Dax.

February 2019: Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard Launch A Baby Brand

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard decided to launch Hello Bello— a brand with everything from diapers to sun and bug protection — for several reasons. "I want something that's going to fill my soul. I want access to be able to give a lot of stuff away just as gifts, as a way of saying thank you for existing in this hard time called parenting," she told People in 2021.

Image via Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images

September 2023: Kristen Bell And Dax Share The Secret To Their Happy Marriage

It's no doubt that Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have experienced a lot throughout their marriage, but they've managed to stay the course. Kristen actually shared some amazing advice for other couples during a conversation with Entertainment Tonight that we're thinking about applying to our own relationships. "Common goals, seek them out," she stressed.

The other thing she feels is crucial to making a relationship work is truly seeing and valuing your partner as a person. "Understanding that your partner used to be a little person is the best thing you can do. Sometimes if we're ever on the verge of a fight, one of us will say — it's usually Dax — 'I feel like 8-year-old Dax right now.' And I'm able to see him like I see my kids, which is in a very different way and go, 'Oh yeah, you're a little person that had trauma and triggers and it's not about me,'" she added.

That's powerful because it can be hard to remember that it's not just about you in a relationship. We don't think people intentionally mean to be selfish, but it can be happen and the key is to acknowledge it instead of doubling down on a particular stance that may not be helpful in the heat of an argument.

October 26, 2024: Dax Shepard Jokes About Kristen Bell's Chemistry With Adam Brody

Nobody Wants This has been the fall rom-com that we can't stop talking about because it's clear Kristen Bell and Adam Brody have intense chemistry in it. Not only were we surprised by it, but it apparently startled Dax Shepard. PEOPLEreports he opened up to the crowd at the New York Festival about it on Saturday, October 28 by recounting a conversation he had with his friend. "...we watched that scene together, the kissing scene, which I'd argue is the very best kissing scene ever, ever put on film," the actor said. "And my best friend, Aaron, from childhood, he goes, 'Does she ever kiss you like that?' No, I didn't even know she could kiss like that."

Dax has no problems poking fun at he and Kristen's relationship so I'm sure they've since debunked that behind closed doors.

This is not a drill: Netflix’s critically acclaimed series The Diplomat is returning for a third season! And how do we know this? Just days before the season two premiere, the streaming service announced that the popular political drama will be returning for a third installment — and we couldn’t be more excited! So, what’s next for Kate Wyler (Keri Russell)? Will she be able to catch the culprit behind the catastrophic explosion that took place in the middle of London? Is there a future for Kate and her husband, Hal Wyler (played by Rufus Sewell), who was injured in the explosion? Here is everything we know about The Diplomat season 3, including plot, cast, premiere date, trailer and more.

What is 'The Diplomat' Season 3 about?

    Netflix

Being that The Diplomat season two has yet to be released (FYI, the second installment premieres on October 31), we don’t know what the central plot for season three will be. But one thing we know for sure? “Season 3 flips the chessboard,” creator, showrunner, and executive producer Debora Cahn recently told Netflix’s TUDUM. And that’s not all: Cahn also revealed that The Diplomat season three finds Kate dealing with the “particular nightmare that is getting what you want.” OK, we will definitely be SAT.

When was 'The Diplomat' Season 3 confirmed?

    Netflix

Three weeks before The Diplomat season two premiere, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria officially confirmed that The Diplomat season three received the green light while on stage at the Bloomberg Screentime Conference in Los Angeles. Shortly after the news was revealed, The Diplomat creator Debora Cahn shared (per Variety), “After an amazing summer shooting in the U.K., we brought London home to NY.” She continued, “Best of both worlds—filming in Brooklyn. We love doing this. We’re so excited to get to keep going.” With so many TV show cancellations this year, we are so excited to see the continuation of Kate’s story in the U.K. Here’s to more adventures with our favorite diplomat!

Is 'The Diplomat' Season 3 currently in production?

    Netflix

We’re happy to confirm that yes it is! According to Netflix’s TUDUM, production for The Diplomat season 3 has officially begun in London and NYC.

When will 'The Diplomat' Season 3 premiere?

    Netflix

Here’s the thing…we don’t have an exact release date for The Diplomat season three at the moment. But given the fact The Diplomat season three has already started production, we speculate that the future installment may premiere sometime in 2025.

Who's in the cast for 'The Diplomat' Season 3?

    Getty Images for Netflix

If Kate Wyatt and her team survive the chaotic events of The Diplomat season two (fingers crossed!), we’re confident that the main cast will return for the third installment, which includes Russell as Kate, Sewell as Hal Wyler, as Ali Ahn as CIA Station Chief Eidra Park, Ato Essandoh as Kate’s Chief of Staff Stuart Hayford and Rory Kinnear as British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge.

Is there a trailer for 'The Diplomat' Season 3?

    Netflix

Currently, there is no trailer for The Diplomat season three. But when it’s released, you’ll be the first to know!

Where can I watch 'The Diplomat' Season 3?

    Netflix

Being that The Diplomat is a Netflix Original series, all new episodes will be available to watch on Netflix! But until then, The Diplomat season one is streaming right now on Netflix!

Stay tuned for more The Diplomat season 3 news and updates — & follow us on Facebook!
