The Adult Way of Breaking Up With a Toxic Friend

Female friendships are the best. Girlfriends are fun to go on adventures with, they’re supportive when we’re going through hardships, and they’re our biggest cheerleaders when we’re following our dreams. … Until they aren’t, that is. Sometimes, no matter how much we loved a person or how well (we thought) they understood us, certain friendships can become toxic relationships. Realizing that a friend shouldn’t be in our lives anymore is confusing, heartbreaking, and stressful, but letting go of a bad friend is just as necessary for your well-being as breaking up with a bad S.O. If you have a friend in your life who just has to go, read on for our tips on breaking up with them the adult way.

1. Define expectations for the friendship. Both yours and theirs. Before you sit down for “A Talk,” figure out if a formal friendship-ending declaration is even necessary. If you’re still acting like besties who do everything together, you’ll definitely need to have a major convo — but if your relationship is more casual, it’s perfectly okay to just stop initiating plans and start turning down their offers to hang to let things slowly fizzle out. Either way, it’s important that you’ve thought realistically about this relationship and what it means to “break up” — there’s no use causing unnecessary drama if you can help it.

2. Remember honesty is always the best policy. With that said, if your friend asks why you’re suddenly MIA, you have to ‘fess up and be honest about where you’re at. Of course, you still want to be mindful of their feelings too: Now’s not the time to start a fight or play the blame game. Sure, you’ve kept a mental scorecard of every passive-aggressive thing they’ve said to you and any time they’ve made you feel insecure, but rehashing those moments with her now won’t help you heal. Instead, a simple “I need to move on” and being clear about your intentions should be enough. If it’s gotten to this point, we’re betting they know what’s up, even if they don’t want to admit it.

3. Set healthy boundaries. However you’ve decided to deal with your toxic friendship, make sure you follow through on your initial intentions. If you’re cutting someone out of your life completely, that means unfollowing (and probably blocking) them on social media, steering clear of social events you know you won’t be able to avoid them at, and turning down attempts at reconnection without resolution of their toxic behavior. Moving on only works if you actually move on. You’ll feel so much freer and more confident if you’re not constantly going down the rabbit hole of Instagram tags or prying pals for gossip. We can’t emphasize this one enough!

4. Keep it between you two. Speaking of those other pals, unless your friend’s behavior has actually been abusive, don’t put pressure on your mutual friends to choose sides. It may be awkward at first, but you’ll find a way to coexist peacefully, and those around you can make up their own minds how they handle your new arrangement. Often, breaking up (whether it’s a friendship or relationship) means disrupting more than just your own lives, so you can expect awkwardness and maybe even losing other friends in the process. Just trust that your instinct for self-preservation is leading you to a healthier, less anxious life on the other side of the initial mess.

5. Don’t let guilt get in the way. It’s so easy to feel like you’re the “bad guy” when you’re the one officially initiating the end a relationship, and none of us like knowing someone is mad at us — even when they’ve been bringing us down. It’s easier said than done, but try not to feel guilty for following your gut. Just repeat after Kourtney Kardashian: “I don’t need this kind of negativity in my life.”

Rumors about the couple's split began when TMZ reported that they were "heading" for divorce, and even though Joe posted a picture to his Instagram with his wedding band in full view on September 4, the couple later announced they're getting divorced. From their red carpet debut to their engagement, the couple has chosen exactly what they wanted to announce — and what they want to keep private. "I’m in a relationship, but it’s a very private relationship," Sophie told The Sunday Times.

However, it seems like Mr. and Mrs. Jonas were able to see the second round of nuptials, a more-private ceremony at the end of June 2019. The official ceremony took place at Le Château de Tourreau in Sarrians, France. July 2022 — Joe Jonas & Sophie Turner Have Baby No. 2

It's been a busy few years for both Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner. The Jonas Brothers released Happiness Begins in 2019, followed by this year's The Album, while Sophie starred in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, The Staircase, and Do Revenge. But unknown to the rest of the world, they were also getting ready for baby number two!

Sophie showed up to the May 2022 Met Gala cradling a baby bump, and then made her official pregnancy announcement in an Elle UK feature the next day. "The greatest thing in life is seeing my daughter go from strength to strength," she says in the interview. "We're so excited to be expanding the family. It's the best blessing ever."

In July 2022, PEOPLE confirmed that the couple had welcomed their second daughter!

September 2023 — Joe Jonas & Sophie Turner Announce Their Divorce

TODAY received an exclusive petition saying Joe Jonas has filed for divorce from Sophie Turner, and that their marriage is "irretrievably broken." He also states that the divorce is in the best interest of their daughters, and that the couple will "have shared parental responsibility" moving forward.

On September 6, the couple shared joint statements to their Instagram accounts. "After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage," the statements read. "There are many speculative narratives as to why, but truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children."

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner came to a new (temporary) agreement on where their kids would live after Sophie sued Joe for "wrongful retention" of their children in New York. According to new documentation, the two children will stay in New York, which both Joe and Sophie have consented to.

"After a productive and successful mediation, we have agreed that the children will spend time equally in loving homes in both the U.S. and the UK," Joe and Sophie said in a statement the week of October 11. Since the agreement legally lasts until January 7, the former couple will "jointly submit a status report letter" before December 23, according to the agreement.

On January 11, a new UK custody plan for Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner was approved, leading Sophie to drop last fall's wrongful retention claims on January 17 "with prejudice, and without attorneys’ fees, expenses, costs and/or disbursements awarded to either party."

September 2024 — Sophie Turner Gets Real About Motherhood Following Joe Jonas Divorce

Sophie Turner opened up about her role as the titular character in Joan, a new TV series, and shared how art is imitating life. "If I hadn’t been a mother, I don’t know if I would have been able to bring the same energy that I did into it," she said (via The Sunday Times). Though she mentioned it's not easy being a "single mother," some people took what she said out of context.

She wasn't talking about herself, but her character Joan's efforts to do the unseemly to have her child back in her life. Still, she clarified her comments via her Instagram stories so there's no confusion about her words. IMO, I don't think she needed to do that because being a mother is hard. Caring for children isn't just about candid Paparazzi or social media posts. When you're doing it by yourself or with a support village, it takes time, effort, consistency, repetition, and so much more!

Luckily she and Joe Jonas are able to have a situation where they're co-parenting so they can alternate between working and caring for them.

October 2024 — Sophie Turner Celebrates New Beau's Birthday...

There have been PLENTY of rumors about Sophie Turner and Peregrine Pearson lately, but she's been understandably tight-lipped about it all. It seems like she's ready to be more forward about her new boyfriend, though! On October 27, 2024, Sophie posted a birthday celebration for Peregrine on Instagram. She wrote, "Happy Birthday my angel pie 🥧🎉 30, flirty and thriving 🎈" alongside a carousel of adorable snaps throughout their relationship.

...And Makes Rare Comments On Divorce From Joe Jonas

On October 30, 2024, Sophie opened up to Harpers Bazaar about her divorce from Joe Jonas. “I’m going through a legal process right now where I can’t really say much, but it was incredibly sad," she said. "We had a beautiful relationship, and it was hard.”

Even though she described the relationship as "beautiful," she also explained that she felt like her life was "on pause" when she wasn't in England. She explained, "I just never really feel like myself when I’m not in London, with my friends and family. I was away for so long – six years – and it was when my friends were getting engaged, and when I got pregnant."

Now, after missing out on "key experiences" with her people, it's clear Sophie is more than happy to be back in London.

The perks of having an older sister means I've been able to ask her all my more embarrassing questionsgrowing up. My whole life, we've chatted about everything from periods to sex to giving birth. Then one day, right before I graduated high school, she gifted me a book that changed everything: Nancy Redd's Body Drama: Real Girls, Real Bodies, Real Issues, Real Answers. It not only helped me understand my body more, but it also helped soothe some of the insecurity I had before my postpartum body developed into what it is today.

I eventually gifted Body Drama to someone else, but I never forgot about how beneficial it was, and I always thought there should be more work like it out in the world. As it turns out, Nancy Redd wasn't done normalizing bodies and questions bout sexual health — the author and Wirecutter journalist just released The Real Body Manual: Your Visual Guide to Health & Wellness! Not only is it a great resource for those who are looking for answers to more specific health questions, but it's something I continue to revisit on the days my insecurity dampens my mood!

I chatted with Redd to understand more about her work — and I came out understanding even more about myself and how I want to help raise the future generation.

The Difference Between 'Body Drama' And 'The Real Body Manual'

If you've had the pleasure of sticking your nose in Nancy Redd's Body Drama, you're familiar with how well-researched and thorough it is. In that regard, The Real Body Manual is no different — but Redd highlights it's still a "totally different book." She says, "The world has changed dramatically, and we're talking so much more about bodies, and we see a lot more bodies."

Despite seeing all those "real" bodies on TV and otherwise, women — and people in general — still don't feel great about themselves. According to a 2022 study, 32% of teens had a negative opinion about their acne, while 31% weren't comfortable with their weight. Meanwhile, another study shows that 80% of women have referred to themselves as "fat."

To combat troubling statistics like those, Redd hopesThe Real Body Manual can help. "I think we're all operating with not enough information about the world we live in, and I think the more information we can receive in a safe, educated, medically-accurate space, the better," she explains.

Redd also really wanted to write a book that taught both her son and her daughter about their changing bodies — and she feels this is the perfect time for everyone to come together and learn about the way bodies not only look, but function. She likens these lessons to learning about world geography. "We don't just need to know about the small town we live in. We need to know about the state, country, the world-at-large," she stresses. And she thinks The Real Body Manual can help you "learn about your own body, your friends, and the people in society you live with."

If you look at the group of friends I have today, everyone doesn't have the same body shame. One of my friends is a little taller and curvier than I am while another is shorter and rounder. I dealt with acne-prone skin and dark spots while my best friend Cookie didn't really struggle with that. It's honestly rare that everyone will look the same — and that's okay! But learning about what's going on with all of us helps bridge our experiential gaps and creates better shared understanding.

And with that in mind, here are the 4 things I learned about my body — and all bodies — when chatting with Nancy and reading The Real Body Manual.

1. Understanding Your Body Doesn't Have To Look Like Everyone Else's

I grew up during a time where certain body types were celebrated more than others in media, and it had a negative effect on how I perceived my own body. I believed I wasn't supposed to have stretch marks because video vixens didn't, and became horrified when I discovered them in middle school as a slender girl. Not only that, but I didn't really develop curves until after I gave birth which made me feel like an outlier in my community.

Recent studies found there's a link between teens aged 16-18 years old developing body dysmorphia and social media...which doesn't sound surprising. And while there are countless body positive accounts that also exist — and I really do promise I'm not saying to completely ditch your socials — sometimes you have to take a step away from it (and other influencers) if it's having a negative impact on your self-esteem.

"Some bodies naturally look like those in music videos. I think separating that from being able to find love or have purpose in your life — they're completely separate things," Redd insists. She breaks things down even further by explaining why you not looking a certain way doesn't discount you from enjoying life. "Some people are born with the ability to be tennis stars, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't pick up a tennis racket because you're not Serena Williams."

The main point she drives home is that "every person can have a great time with their bodies" which is why The Real Body Manual reads like an encouraging, evidence-based love letter to readers.

2. Loving Yourself Is A Choice

Just like I had to make the decision to fully accept the body I have, it's something Nancy says everyone has the ability to do. "It's literally a choice," she says before one of her kids quickly pops into our convo. In a tender moment, she asks her child, "Hello, do you love your body?"

This brief encounter circles back to the reason why The Real Body Manual matters — it opens up these conversations with our kids, offering a tangible resource for others. I know I try to have more conversations like this with my son, and I've even encouraged him to hug himself when he needs a little dose of self love.

"The things that matter — having purpose in life, feeling love, being a good community member — don't have much to do with whether you have hyperpigmentation, freckles, cellulite, etc.," she says. "The more you know from the beginning of your journey that bodies look different, the easier it is for you to accept [yourself]. But if the only bodies you're seeing are sexualized in pornography, videos, and magazines, you don't have a real basis."

It's one of the biggest reasons she intended for The Real Body Manual to be a visual guide.

3. Your Naked Body Is Beautiful

"I really like showing people what the body actually looks like for the most part," Redd says. Yeah, that's right — The Real Body Manual features real people's bodies, not just illustrations. In doing so, she says, "Everyone can see someone who resembles them." It doesn't matter if you're heavy-set, a person with different sized breasts, or anything in-between. The point is that you'll be able to find yourself somewhere in The Real Body Manual.

My mother told me how little information her own mom shared with her about bodies. Because of that, my mom always stressed that she wanted my sister and I to have access to whatever information we needed. She wanted us to be informed, and never inhibited by her own lack of comfort over a topic. But not all parents feel comfortable sharing with their kids.

Redd says, "I don't think it was done with malice. I think people are just working with whatever they have which is not a lot." She further notes people have chosen to refer to genitals as "down there" for both men and women instead of saying the proper term for them for their autonomy. I'll be honest — growing up in a religious background often means sexual shame was attached to very normal things like breasts and penises.

Not everyone was on board with me telling my toddler he has a penis instead of saying "pee pee" — or not talking about it at all, if we're being honest. But I wanted him to feel comfortable with what he was born with, and to know that his dad having the same anatomy is normal. "We just don't use the proper names for things which increases this shroud of secrecy about it. We aren't taught health literacy," Redd says.

4. 'The Real Body Manual' Is A Must-Have For Pre-Teens, Teens, And Adults

Funnily enough, Redd informs me that October is actually Health Literacy Month, making all this really round out. We should know what's going on with our bodies, whether it's the proper terminology, what changes we're going through, what we can look like. Ignorance only makes our experiences more confusing and harder — especially when we're young and probably have a million different questions.

She explains that if you ask people specifics like 'How does a period work,' then they may not know the answer. "The same goes for if you ask what's the difference between a freckle and a mole," Redd explains. "It may not seem like these things are a big deal, but when something goes wrong, you need to know 'I need to get this thing checked out.'"

Information is power, and when armed with information about our bodies we can lead safer, healthier lives. Instead of wondering why we don't talk about things enough, Redd decided to take the bull by the horns and talk about them — and she thinks you should talk about them, even (and sometimes especially) when they're uncomfortable. She says, "Any time you feel shame or discomfort discussing your body, that's a sign you don't have enough information."

Almost a year after her exit from the Scream franchise, Melissa Barrera is opening up about what the experience has taught her. In a conversation about her new movie Your Monster (in theaters now), Melissa exclusively told Brit + Co she feels like a whole different person than she was last year.

After posting about the Palestinian and Israeli conflict in November of 2023, Melissa was fired from Scream 7 (production company Spyglass later told Variety in a statement they believed her comments "[crossed] the line into hate speech.")

While the experience — and the fact the experience was so public — was difficult, Melissa says she's come out better on the other side. "I'm so grateful for everything that I went through, even though it was really hard, I'm so grateful that I lived it and that I survived it, and that I'm stronger for it," she continues. "And that I know I have a focus of what I wanna keep doing, not just for me and my career, but like, how can I contribute to the industry and to the world to make it better and safer for everyone?"

The end of the year brings plenty of reflection, whether you're someone who thrives on journal prompts or you prefer to yap over a bottle of wine with your best friend. But a viral Sundance interview from January, in which Melissa Barrera says the experience with Spyglass started helping her "finally figure out who I'm supposed to be," proves she's been reflecting all year long.

"Everybody's kind of like thinking of like, 'What does the future hold? Like, how do we make it better?' And I have been thinking that for a year," she says. "There's people that have actually been on this journey for way longer, and it's them that we should be thanking for our world not being like over with right now, you know? They're the ones that continue to make changes for the better and to fight for better things for all of us."

After Melissa Barrera's exit from Scream, news broke that Jenna Ortega wouldn't return for the seventh installment. Melissa called Jenna a "good egg" in a January interview with Rolling Stone, and gave Brit + Co some insight into that viral video of the onscreen sisters laughing during Scream 6 press.

Almost two years after meeting Ariana Grande, Ethan Slater finally opened up about their relationship in a new interview with GQ. “Obviously, it was a really super big year and I think there was something that was really difficult about things in your private life being commented on and looked at by the public," he says. "There were a lot of big changes in private lives that were really happening, so it’s really hard to see people who don’t know anything about what’s happening commenting on it and speculating, and then getting things wrong about the people you love. So just to address that part of it, that feels really hard."

But the clouds also came with silver linings. “Of course, it was an amazing year and a really beautiful thing, and I’m just really excited," he continues. "I’m just really, really proud of Ari and the work she’s done on this. She’s poured herself into it. I’m really proud that I got to be there for that part of it, and I’m really excited to be there for this next step of it when the world gets to see the amazing thing that she did.”
