How to Do Your Own Chalk Wedding Signage like a Pro

When dry-erase whiteboards came into classrooms in the ‘90s, it seemed like the end of days for dusty blackboards. But chalk is still a much-loved medium amongst hand-drawers like Valerie McKeehan of Lily & Val. At her shop, Valerie draws chalk messages and designs to create greeting cards, gifts and decor. Now, she’s written The Complete Book of Chalk Lettering: Create and Develop Your Own Style ($20), offering 60 lessons on mastering that squeaky, dusty stick and creating your own pro-level designs. We asked Valerie to offer up some tips on working chalk lettering into your wedding decor, because who doesn’t want to save big bucks on personalized wedding details?

One of the best things about chalk lettering is that you don’t need much to do it. Keep it classic with Valerie’s favorite writing implement, the Crayola Anti-Dust White Chalk ($1/12-pack), or go colorful with Alphacolor Assorted Chalk Sticks ($7/12-pack). Then you just need basic items like a felt eraser, cloth rag and pencil sharpener.

When it comes to liquid chalk pens, Valerie says they’re a great option if you want to make sure your wedding signage doesn’t budge. BUT it also limits how much you can do: “Keep in mind, it will provide a flat look. To achieve shading and texture you’ll need the real dusty thing!”

Decorating Outside the Box

So what are you going to DIY for your wedding? You can’t go wrong with a customized chalkboard welcome sign, says Valerie. “They really set a beautiful first impression for your guests, and then you can use the sign in your home as a keepsake!” She suggests decorating the finished piece with flowers, to soften the harshness of the chalkboard. “For an unexpected chalkboard detail, try using chalk art placemats or chalkboard paper drawn with chalk pens as a table runner.” Psst — make sure to check out the B+C Shop for even more options, like place cards, labels, pennants and even balloons!

Finding Your Font Muse

You definitely want your font choice to match your overall wedding style, so before you start trying to master big, swooping calligraphy, evaluate what message you want to convey. “If you are trying to achieve an elegant, formal vibe, then a sophisticated, calligraphic script would pair nicely,” says Valerie. “If your wedding is more casual, however, then a playful, whimsical style might work well.” Refer back to your invitations or save the dates and look for common font thread that you can stick with. Valerie also recommends studying computer-generated fonts, as consistency in your letter shapes will lead to much better readability.

Aside from the font and message, think about what flair you want to add, like scrolls or flowers. Everything from coffee shop signage to a floral pattern on a vintage dress has inspired Valerie, so keep your eyes peeled for detailing and flourishes that you want to add to your chalk lettering. The Internet is also your friend here, including two of Valerie’s fave lettering Instagrams, @amandaarneill and @designroots.

8 Tips for Perfecting Your Chalk Lettering

Okay, so you’ve decided on your surface, your message, your font and your detailing. Are you ready to chalk? Here are Valerie’s pro tips for getting down and dusty.

1. Season your chalkboard. “Chalkboard ‘seasoning’ sounds fancy, but it’s really very simple. It involves rubbing the side of a piece of chalk over the entire surface of a brand new chalkboard before using it. This helps break in the chalkboard, preventing the chalk from leaving a permanent mark the first time you use it. It also provides a more rustic, muted look as opposed to the flat, black surface of a brand new chalkboard. After the chalk covers the surface, just erase and wipe down with a damp cloth.”

2. Start with a pencil sketch. Remember that practice makes perfect. “It’s tempting to jump right in, but you’ll want to have a plan before chalking.”

3. Sharpen your chalk. If you want to get intricate with your details, you need a finer point. “Use a pencil sharpener with two holes — the larger hole will fit the chalk perfectly. You will be able to create much more detailed letters with a sharp point.”

4. Add guide marks to your chalkboard. Chalking outside the lines can be fun, but when you’re trying to write a welcome sign, it’s best to have some guides. “This ensures the proper placement of all the letters. The worst feeling is designing a board only to realize you have no room left at the bottom! Adding guide marks will make drawing much easier. Simply erase the marks with a cotton swab once you’re done and no one will even know you used them at all.”

5. Use a top-down approach. No more smudging! “When you work from the top of the chalkboard down, it allows you to rest the side of your hand against the chalkboard without bumping or smudging your work. This anchoring will help you draw with more precision.”

6. Take a step back. Instead of trying to get it done in one fell swoop, Valerie suggests taking breaks. “As you’re drawing, it will be helpful to take a step back from your work and view it from a distance. You will immediately be able to see if the design feels unbalanced or if there are any areas that need tweaking.”

7. Practice, practice, practice. “The more you practice, the more you will be able to create a style that is all your own, which will make your wedding chalkboards even more special.” And who knows, maybe you’ll be making chalkboard signs for your friends for years to come.

8. Relax. Valerie says that the most important thing is to enjoy the process. “Chalk art is so forgiving and fun. One of the best things about it is that it erases, and gray smudges give the board some character. Let go of the need for perfection. If you don’t like something you’ve drawn, simply erase and try again.”

A Complete Unknown finally rolls into theaters on Christmas Day (you know..like a rolling stone?) but the cast is already generating serious buzz. Timothée Chalamet snagged a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of Bob Dylan, while Monica Barbaro just won the Astra Film Awards' Breakthrough Performer Award. But when I sat down with the actress, I couldn't help but go all the way back to the first day of filming the December movie.

Here's what A Complete Unknown's Monica Barbaro had to say about meeting Timothée Chalamet and learning guitar for the role of Joan Baez.

Monica Barbaro loved working with Timothée Chalamet on 'A Complete Unknown.'

Monica revealed in a Rolling Stone interview that she met Timothée Chalamet a week before filming — and that he was already more-or-less in character. "The first time we met was a music rehearsal," she tells Brit + Co exclusively. "So we just really launched right into it, which was nice because I admired his work so much from afar and any level of intimidation that I may have had, I could just sort of funnel into music prep, which was great."

"It was a beautiful experience of getting to hear our voices harmonize as these characters and hear the accompaniment of our guitars," she continues. "And we were able to kind of like anchor ourselves in the music and have sort of a meeting of minds that was maybe a little more similar to Joan and Bob because they met in the music scene as already very proficient musicians. So that was a beautiful magical day. And then we like launched right into filming."

Monica Barbaro (who you'll recognize from Top Gun2) stars as musician Joan Baez, and even though Monica had to learn how to play guitar for the role, you'd never guess just by watching the film. She carries herself with such confidence and ease that I'd have believed she'd been playing her whole life. And the fact her voice sounds like a Disney princess is just the cherry on top.

"I'm not a singer, I didn't play guitar," she says. "So there was sort of this introductory level thing going on where I just had to figure out how to form my hands and in some way, I thought about how she might have done that at like 14, I think, when she first picked up guitar. But that was just like an overhaul of everything — I mean, all my time just poured into that training."

She was doing her own research, but also worked with vocal coach Eric Vetro, who's also worked with Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, and Shawn Mendes. "He encouraged me to consider what the lyrics of songs meant to her," Monica says. "Because the best musicians are storytellers and that's one of the best things about he renditions of these folk songs is you feel the story of the song."

And because of that, focusing on the lyrics "was also a part of the character development. So there were sort of siloed things like voice, guitar research, and then her speaking voice," she says. "And then all of those things started to just kind of like meld, you know. You have to play and sing at the same time and tell a story and do it from the perspective of Joan. And so so they just sort of over time kind of like bridged."

But no matter how much prep Monica, Timothée, and Elle Fanning (who stars as Sylvie Russo) did for the film, they still had to film in the middle of New York City, which came with its own set of 2024-specific challenges. "It was interesting to be filming and have people sneaking videos and posting them on the internet," she says, admitting that she "really just tried to turn all of that off to the best of my ability."

The film highlights the tension between celebrity and fame, considering we meet Bob Dylan right before he becomes, well, Bob Dylan. "It's a privilege to have to have so much attention and excitement on a project and I appreciate the intent, but you kind of just sort of turn it off a little bit and disengage," Monica says, "especially when you're talking about just a very different kind of fame in the sixties."

Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) is back for another season of snooping and stalking in New York City, and thanks to the new You season 5 teaser, we know exactly when this new TV show is returning. In addition to showing us characters from the past like Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail), Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti), and Marienne Bellamy (Tati Gabrielle), Joe straight-up says goodbye to the one person who's always been there: you. Yep, Netflix went there.

“Every season they manage to find new space to make it interesting and relevant,” Penn Badgley told Tudum. “And this season, I think somehow coming back to where it started allowed for it to just become grounded in the way that it needs to also have this kind of spectacular finish.”

Here's a breakdown of that brand new You season 5 teaser.

"Hello, you. Do you remember me? Cause I remember you," Joe asks in the You season 5 teaser, over shots of New York City and Mooney's Books. "Here we are together again, back to where it began."

"A lot has happened these many years together," he continues. "Identities, cities, loves, complications." The trailer is a walk down memory lane for viewers and for Joe as he remembers Beck, Love, and Marienne — and locking them up. Plus some fights and escapes he made along the way.

"All that led me here to now, to where I as always meant to be," he says. "And the one constant, the one thing that has always been there for me, is you. You who have been there the whole time and will be there with me to the end. Goodbye, you."

Okay, this is totally giving me Black Mirror, metaverse vibes, especially since Joe's in his creepy underground bunker with all that blue lighting. I have chills down my spine just watching this!

Is season 5 of You coming out?

Yes, You season 5 is dropping on Netflix April 24, 2025.

We've been waiting for new episodes since season 4 premiered in 2023, but the writers and stars have been planning Joe's ending for much longer. "We have some ideas that we've been talking about pretty much from the beginning," Sera Gamble told EW when she was showrunner in 2023. "It's really the debate about what kind of justice would be fair and appropriate for a guy like Joe. And then do we believe that he would get that kind of punishment? My short answer is like, maybe not from the American system. But there might be other ways. So that's the stuff we're talking about."

But whatever these writers and directors have up their sleeves, Penn Badgley promises You season 5 will come to a "perfect" conclusion. “I would love for people to just be like, ‘Wow, it’s over and I feel good and I don’t want to watch it again,'" he told Harper's Bazaarin March of 2023. And honestly, a perfect ending is all TV fans can hope for these days, right?

Who's in the You season 5 cast?

The final season of You stars Penn Badgley, Madeline Brewer, Anna Camp, Charlotte Richie, and Griffin Matthews.

We might just be getting into the holiday spirit, but for the Radio City Rockettes, it's been Christmastime since September! In addition to a very enlightening game of This or That, twins Caitlin and Courtney Sullivan gave Brit + Co an inside look at what it's like to be a Rockette — and what they do the rest of the year. Consider this the perfect trivia for your Christmas dinner after you've mastered that Rockette red lip ;).

Here are 12 surprising things about being a Radio City Rockette.

1. Rehearsing for the Christmas season is a full-time job.

MSG Entertainment

Once the holidays roll around, the Radio City Rockette shows might last 90 minutes, but prepping for the season is a full work week. "The rehearsal season itself is six weeks long, six hours a day, six days a week," Courtney says. "So it is a long process and I feel like the rehearsals itself are like a bonding experience for us."

2. The Radio City Rockettes get some serious bonding time.

MSG Entertainment

"You spend a lot of time with the girls around you and within Radio City, our dressing rooms too," Courteney says of the Rockette rehearsal schedule. "I feel like that's the time when you really get to form those bonds with your sisters and really create magic that can be seen on stage too."

"Yeah, once we move into Radio City, this becomes your family, truly," Caitlin adds. "We spend every day, day in day out together, we spend the holidays together. So you naturally just become very close with everyone."

Each Rockette dresses up her getting-ready station.

MSG Entertainment

"Everybody dresses up their station to make it feel very homey," Caitlin says. "I like lots of like decor and festive lights, candles, all that fun stuff."

The women love to have treats in their dressing rooms!

MSG Entertainment

I'm literally snacking on a chocolate bar as I type this, and I'm not the only one who likes to have sweets on-hand! "I love Christmas cookies," Caitlin says. "We will do something with our dressing room and bring in treats every day. I feel like someone's bringing in something new."

The Radio City Rockettes perform up to 200 shows at Christmas.

MSG Entertainment

"The Rockettes perform up to 200 shows in a season, and the way that each show feels so special and individual, it's just amazing how you never know who's out in the audience seeing the show for the first time," Courtney says. "And the way the ladies in the line put their best foot forward every single time is so inspiring and made me want to give even more."

"It just really amazes me how dedicated and how hard working all the Rockettes are," Caitlin agrees. "And I think we always knew that, but then once you're in it, you have a whole new level of respect for how hard all these women work."

And each Rockette can perform in up to 4 shows a day!

MSG Entertainment

"I think sometimes people don't realize we can do up to four shows in the day, which is unreal and amazing," Caitlin says. "That might be a surprise to people when they're coming to a show. They might think we just have that one that day, but we actually might have two, three, or four in the day, which is pretty amazing."

But the Rockettes also find time to goof off.

MSG Entertainment

The Rockettes might be known for their precision, but Courtney promises their smiles are real! "We are having so much fun," Courtney says. "It's really just an amazing feeling to be on stage and we find times to laugh and joke around, but really obviously give our all to our craft. And I think people don't realize like we are really having an amazing time on and off stage."

The Radio City Rockettes really support one another.

MSG Entertainment

As you can imagine, a career as a Rockette comes with its challenges, but the ladies on the line always support each other. "I was really proud last year was our first season together and just to complete one full season is such an accomplishment," Courtney says. "I feel like we're ready to take it on again and know like we absolutely can do it. And with the support of everyone around us too, you know, you're going to get through the entire holiday season and you're gonna come out even stronger."

The Radio City Rockettes can work a bunch of jobs during the summer.

MSG Entertainment

The Rockettes have a busy schedule during Christmas — but that doesn't mean they kick up their feet the rest of the year! "Every person on the line has a very diverse background and they go to different job opportunities throughout the year," Courtney says. "People are pulled in different directions when the holiday season is over. The Rockettes do work year-round [with] different opportunities."

"We're always looking to continue to dance and work on our precision," she continues. "The summer though, our favorite thing is to go to the beach. We're from New Jersey and the Jersey shore is like our home. So if we're not dancing, you can definitely find us relaxing on the sand."

The best thing about performing New York City can also be the most challenging.

MSG Entertainment

You know how, when people talk about New York, they say, "If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere?" That's because it's hard to live here y'all!

"This is just the city that never sleeps," Caitlin says. "There are people everywhere. It's always alive. There's just something magical about New York and I love that. And I think that could come with the biggest challenge as well: the city that never sleeps. You feel like you're going, going, going at all times. But that's pretty exciting to do at our age, living out our dreams. I feel like that will never get old."

"I feel like we have no complaints here!" Courtney adds.

Even as a Radio City Rockette, the work is never done.

MSG Entertainment

"I feel like there's always room for improvement," Courtney says. "Even today, as we're living at our dream, we're continuously working on our technique and our precision and going back to our foundation, I think the work is never done and you can continue to dream and accomplish some of those really major goals."

"Yeah, the work is never done is I think is kind of our motto," Caitlin adds. "Just keep, keep pushing, keep driving and just keep dreaming. And never give up."

The Rockettes are like one big family.

MSG Entertainment

Just like so many of our favorite TV show and movie casts, the Rockettes love to bond! "The Rockettes truly feel like a sisterhood and we are so lucky that we are real sisters on the line together," Caitlin says, adding that to dance "with your sister is everything we always hoped for."

And those connections make a magical experience like New York at Christmas even more magical. "[To] be welcomed with open arms has been such a dream come true for us," Courtney says. "We just love the holiday season and to celebrate it at Radio City, I feel like I can't imagine anything better."

2024 was a year of lessons — I added so many "overrated" fashion finds to my cart...that definitely should have never left it. As intentional as I was, I made a few shopping mistakes that I'm willing to live with. But, no one said I couldn't talk about my lack of judgement with all the overrated fashion finds that I wouldn't buy again. Listen! I just wanna warn you so you don't end up like me! So, if you're thinking about taking some risks on recent trends, here's what I bought and hated last year. (You'll thank me later)

P.S. Just because I didn't love them doesn't mean they're bad buys for other people. They just didn't work for me!

Scroll to see the 5 overrated fashion finds I should've never bought...

Darina Belonogova

1. The Pleated Skirt

Big sigh... I'm 5'2" with a short torso, long legs, and a curvier backside, so shopping can be tricky. But I somehow thought buying a mini pleated skirt was a great idea. Similar to one of the other fashion trends I'm not a fan of, my skirt gave me 50 shades of 'never again' when I attempted to wear it.

From the wind having a field day with it to feeling my butt on my car's seat every time I sat down, I quickly understood that this was a waste of money for me.

Abercrombie & Fitch

2. The Barrel Jean

Barrel jeans are another buy I wanted to love, but didn't because of how it fit on my body. I don't know if I should try something that's tailored for petite women, but I'm still scarred from being excited to try them on...only to face disappointment.

I looked like I'd purposely blown air in my jeans to achieve this trend which made me feel silly. However, I've seen content creators like Karen Goodbrand wearing them and they look amazing! However, I'm willing to table them for now and stick to my straight or traditional wide leg jeans.

Ozan Çulha

3. Corset Belt

Let's have a long moment of silence for my lack of judgement with this purchase. I don't know what the goal was when I purchased a corset belt, but it swallowed my tiny torso.

I'm not even kidding. I looked like I stuffed myself into it which made me promptly return it for a refund. Sometimes I've been known to do an exchange for store credit, but I wanted this to go back to the sender so I'd never have to think about it again.

4. Colorful Tights

Before you question my sanity, I want to explain why this made my "overrated" list. I purchased a pair of burgundy tights at the last minute and wore them on Christmas Eve. They got a lot of positive attention, but I was so itchy in them lol. Also, they reminded me of a time when it was mandatory to wear them with dresses to church.

I literally couldn't wait to pull them off when I got home and haven't seen them since December 24, 2024.

5. The Faux Crocodile Print Vinyl Coat

I actually loved this coat, but what makes it overrated is how much noise it made whenever I wore it. It sounded like rubbing two water hoses together, meaning it was insufferable. It could be a personal thing, but I couldn't get past that sound no matter how cool I thought it made my outfits look.

The worst part about it is I spent more than I should've for it and haven't seen it since last summer, so all the rubber sounds were for nothing.

If you're waiting for 1923 season 2, I've got good news for you. You don't have to spend the next month rewatching season 1 because Netflix just dropped a brand new TV show that is giving MAJOR Yellowstone universe vibes. Set in 1857, American Primeval is all about family and survival, which sounds a lot like the Duttons if you ask me. Lock in, friends, because you'll probably binge it in one sitting.

Here's everything you need to know about American Primeval, streaming on Netflix now.

Where can I watch American Primeval?

All six episodes of American Primeval are available to watch on Netflix now. The episodes range from 36 minutes to just over an hour. That means it's the perfect TV show to binge watch this weekend!

What is American Primeval about?

In 1857 Utah, cultures clash when Indigenous peoples, settlers, and the Mormon militia begin a fight for the land. Sara (Betty Gilpin) and Devin (Preston Mota) are searching for Devin's father when they meet Two Moons (Shawnee Pourier), a Native American who escaped abuse. When their group is attacked, the trio is taken under the wing of Isaac (Taylor Kitsch).

And fans are loving it! One X user tweeted that it's "one of the best series Netflix has made," while another calls it a "masterpiece."

Who's in the cast?

American Primeval stars Taylor Kitsch as Isaac Reed, Betty Gilpin as Sara Rowell, Dane DeHaan as Jacob Pratt, Saura Lightfoot-Leon as Abish Pratt, Derek Hinkey as Red Feather, Joe Tippett as James Wolsey, Jai Courtney as Virgil Cutter, Preston Mota as Devin Rowell, Shawnee Pourier as Two Moons, and Shea Whigham as Jim Bridger.

Is American Primeval based on fact?

Matt Kennedy/Netflix

American Primeval is a fictionalized version of history, so while it features real events like the Utah War and the Mountain Meadows Massacre (in which the Mormon militia murdered a wagon train of travelers on their way to California), the details and main characters were created for the series.

But one real detail about the TV show? Taylor Kitsch learned the Shoshone language from elders at the Wind River Reservation for his role as Isaac. "One of my dialect coaches, she's in her late 70s and the last thing she wants to do is get this language written down," he told Q's Tom Power. "I'm so lucky to do this kind of stuff."

"To give yourself to a project worth telling….You're servicing something bigger than you," he continues. "There's a legacy. There's something there that humbles you quite quickly and I love that challenge."

Will there be a season 2 for American Primeval?

American Primeval was originally released as a limited series. But given the success of the show, I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up getting a new season! Stay tuned for updates on American Primeval season 2.
