15 Hacks For Cleaning Your Bathroom From Top To Bottom

how to clean a bathroom from top to bottom

The bathroom is one of our favorite places in our home. When you add plenty of houseplants, decor, and candles, it becomes the perfect place to relax in the bath and do your 10-step (or 1-step...we don't judge) skincare routine. However, it won't come as a surprise that bathrooms get very dirty, very quickly.

It takes more than just soap and water to make sure that your bathroom is spick-and-span, though. Luckily for you, we've broken down how to clean a bathroom so that you can easily keep your own sparkling. Get a head start on your spring cleaning with this guide on disinfecting your sink, bathtub, and even your toilet tank.

What is the best way to clean a bathroom?

When you're cleaning your bathroom, you'll want to make sure you have enough space to clean your surfaces well. Clear off your counters, move your bath mats, and take your hair products out of the shower before you go in with your disinfectant.

What should be your first step when cleaning the bathroom?

As long as you've moved everything out of the way, it's totally up to you which task you take on first. Our main suggestion would be to clean any surfaces before taking on the floor to make sure you don't pull double duty, constantly cleaning up any fallen debris.

What do professionals use to clean bathrooms?

While brand preferences will depend on the person, there are definitely general products that you should have on-hand. These include sponges, disinfectant, a toilet brush, toilet bowl cleaner, bleach, and scrubbers.

How do you clean and disinfect a bathroom?

Get rid of dust, dirt, and grime with soap and water before you use your disinfectant. That way, the buildup isn't getting in the way of the cleaning power of the disinfectant, letting you clean faster and use less product.

Everything You Need To Know About Cleaning Your Bathroom

The Sink

From washing our hands to brushing our teeth to washing our face, this is likely the most-trafficked part of the bathroom, and it gets dirty way too quickly. Thankfully, it's not hard to clean.

The Mirror

Grab some streak-free cleaner and a paper towel or reusable cloth to clean up your mirror on your designated cleaning day, or anytime you notice it has some streaks on it. This is a simple way to make your bathroom feel a lot more upscale.

The Bowl + Counter

The easiest way to keep your sink clean is with a sponge and a disinfectant. When you wipe everything down, don't forget to wipe around the faucet and the edges of the sink, and you can clean up any soapy water that's leftover with a paper towel.

Under The Sink

While you're disinfecting the top of the sink, it's the perfect opportunity to organize under the sink! Get rid of any expired products or condense any multiples (like combining two half-empty bags of cotton balls into one). An organized cabinet will help you feel cleaner and keep better track of your powder room products, too.

The Shower

Even though your shower is constantly coming in contact with soap, it's still important to make an effort to clean the whole thing (AKA, more than just the tub).

The Shower Head

If your shower head has a filter, remove the head every one or two months (you can experiment until you find the time frame that works best with your home's specific water system) and clear out whatever the filter has captured. While you're at it, let your shower head soak in vinegar or give it a thorough cleaning with a sponge. It also never hurts to regularly wipe the shower head down with some disinfectant.

The Bathtub

Take your disinfectant and a sponge to clean your tub. Make sure you don't forget the shelves or places where you keep products — mold and mildew can hide behind your favorite shampoo.

The Drain + Hair Catcher

We apologize in advance, because this is definitely one of the grossest parts about cleaning a bathroom, especially if you have long hair. A drain snake will be your best friend when it comes to making sure your drain is empty, and if you have a hair catcher, you can go ahead and throw it in the toilet with some ammonia so that it cleans while you take care of the rest of the tub.

The Shower Liner

Did you know your shower curtain + liner is actually one of the dirtiest parts of the bathroom? One tip that you can do to keep your shower liner in tip top shape is to always close the curtain because leaving it open doesn't allow it to dry out. But if you're noticing some grime on the liner, throw it in a gentle wash cycle with a little bit of detergent, or you can spray it with bleach-based bathroom cleaner and wipe it down.

The Toilet

The toilet is actually one of the easiest parts of the bathroom to clean, even if it's not fun. Still not a fan? Grab one of those automatic cleaners to minimize your scrubbing.

Inside The Bowl

One area of the bowl that you want to make sure you don't forget is under the lip, where the water comes out when you flush. It's easy to forget since you can't see it, but mildew can build up here very easily.

The Toilet Seat

This is one area that you definitely want to make sure is clean (for obvious reasons). Aside from the top and the bottom of the toilet seat, don't forget to clean around the hinges—there can be a surprising amount of buildup there.

Under The Toilet

Give the bottom of the toilet a quick scrub just to make sure it's clean. If your trash can is near the toilet like ours is, cleaning the bottom is also a good way to make sure there's no trash on the floor or dust buildup.

The Toilet Tank

You'll want to clean your toilet tank (inside the back of the toilet under the cover) two or three times a year. You can use vinegar, which is naturally acidic, to break down any buildup. Just fill the tank a few inches from the top, let it sit for a few hours, and flush.

Extras

Once you've finished disinfecting the main areas of the bathroom, here are some other miscellaneous areas that are still important to clean.

The Floor

You don't have to sweep and mop every week if you're not able to, but we'd definitely recommend doing it at least one or two times a month.

The Trash

How often you need to take out the trash will depend on how frequently you throw things away, so just make sure you keep an eye on it. If you live with your roommates or partner, it can be helpful to discuss a strategy for making sure the trash never overflows.

The Windows

Grab that same cleaner you used on the mirror for any windows in your bathroom and wipe away.

The Bathroom Exhaust Fan

A clean fan will filter out moisture the correct way. It's always a good idea to get the help of a professional, but if you want to clean the fan yourself, the most important first step is to make sure you turn the breaker off. Then you can clean the cover with hot soapy water and use a vacuum to remove debris from the blades. Make sure everything is dry before reassembling and turning the power back on.

When I moved into my first home, I noticed an interesting trend: my guests kept gifting me cleaning supplies. I turned to my BFF and asked, "Should I be offended?" After all, I’d always thought of myself as tidy and organized — but deep cleaning? That wasn’t exactly my thing.

Granted, I was going through a major life change and cleaning my home wasn't a top priority, but I clearly got the hint. During a recent visit, my mom shared a few game-changing tips for cleaning my washing machine and dishwasher (spoiler: all you need is vinegar!). Since then, I've picked up more tricks to tackle the tub, oven, and beyond.

So, here’s a comprehensive cleaning guide to help you kick off the holidays and 2025 with a clean slate and home.

Monthly: Clean Your Washing Machine

Rachel Claire

There's this common misconception that washing machines are always clean just by running loads of laundry. I learned the hard way, not true. Over time, detergent residues, fabric softener, and minerals from the water build up in your washing machine, creating a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. Yuck! To keep your clothes and linens smelling fresh and truly clean, a monthly deep clean is a must.

How to Clean It: Once a month, run an empty hot water cycle with a cup of distilled white vinegar. This will help break down any buildup inside the drum, as well as eliminate any bacteria. For front-loading machines, don’t forget to clean the rubber gasket around the door where mold loves to hide. I just did this and it was frankly, gross, but so satisfying in the end. Wipe it down with a mixture of vinegar and water, and let it air dry.

Monthly: Clean Your Dishwasher

cottonbro studio

You and your partner may argue over how you load the dishes, but have either of you actually cleaned it? Dishwashers, like washing machines, build up icky grime over time from food particles and soap scum, causing a stink and making your dishwasher work less well. A quick monthly clean can keep it in top shape.

How to Clean It: Pour a cup of vinegar inside and run a hot water cycle with no dishes. Afterward, sprinkle a bit of baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher and run another cycle. This combo will help remove lingering smells and make your dishwasher sparkle.

Biannually: Clean Your Oven

Liliana Drew

If you're not using your oven for big meals all the time, twice a year is usually enough cleaning it will need (whew!). Otherwise, every few months will do the trick. Cleaning off all that baked-on grease and food residue with a biannual clean will keep it working more efficiently and ready for your next festive feast.

How to Clean It: Create a thick paste with baking soda and water, then apply it to the inside of the oven, avoiding heating elements. Let it sit overnight, and then wipe away the grime. Finish by spraying a little vinegar to tackle any remaining residue. You can also try a store-bought oven cleaner that works in minutes like Easy-Off.

Every 3 Months: Clean Hard To Reach Places

Shutterstock

Sometimes, it’s the places we don’t see that need the most attention: under the fridge, behind the couch, and in vents. A thorough dusting every three months will keep allergens at bay.

How to Clean: If you don't already have a robot vacuum, use a standup vacuum with a hose attachment or a microfiber cloth to reach these spots. For vents, remove covers and gently wash them in warm, soapy water. Replace disposable filters every three months too.

Weekly: Tub and Shower

Kaboompics.com

My least favorite room to clean: bathrooms, which tend to build up mold and mildew quickly due to all the moisture. A quick weekly clean can prevent buildup, while a monthly deep clean will ensure everything stays sparkling and germ-free.

How to Clean: I recently discovered Rejuvenate Soap Scum Remover for my shower glass doors and it works great. For your tub and shower, you can use a mixture of baking soda and vinegar as a natural scrub. Spray the surfaces with vinegar, sprinkle baking soda over them, and scrub with a brush or simply use your favorite all-purpose cleaner like Method or Meyers. Rinse well. Also, keep a squeegee in your shower to reduce buildup over time.

Weekly: Bed Sheets

Tatiana Syrikova

There's nothing better than climbing into your bed with freshly cleaned sheets. You should wash your bed sheets once a week, or every two weeks at most. If you sweat a lot in your sleep or suffer from major allergies, try to clean more often than that.

How to Clean: When washing your sheets, use a paraben-free and dye-free detergent like Seventh Generation or Arm & Hammer Free & Clear, especially if you have sensitive skin and wash your pillowcases and bed sheets at the same time to keep dirt at bay.

Seasonally: Windows

Nathan Fertig

Cleaning your windows every fall and spring can make a huge difference in brightening your home with more natural light and help you enjoy a better view. You won't regret it!

How to Clean: Use your favorite glass cleaner or put a few drops of dish soap in a warm bucket of water. First, wipe the frames with a dry cloth or a brush to remove dust and debris. Then using a sponge, start from the top and work down to lift off dirt, fingerprints, and grime. Use a squeegee for a streak-free finish, and a clean microfiber cloth (to prevent lint) to dry any remaining water droplets around the edges.

Here's to a happy, healthy clean home! My last two tips: Bring in air-purifying plants to naturally clean your indoor air and pretty up your home. And for pots and pans that still show burnt marks, I found a sprinkling of Bar Keepers Friend with a nice scrub does the trick!

Like it or not, ‘tis the season to start thinking about the holidays. ‘Tis a stressful season, too, but don’t let the hustle and bustle of it all get you down. Whether you’re already formulating family plans or researching the best gifts to give, the best way to lean into this time of year (and not resist the holiday cheer) is by decorating your place to be as merry and bright as possible.

I know what you may be thinking: it’s still quite early to kickstart the festive mindset. And trust me – I’ve always been anti-early holiday decorating, but Anthropologie’s most recent holiday collection has persuaded me otherwise. They’re selling tons of timeless pieces to help you get a jump on the season, and my favorite part is that many of them can be used year after year. Single-use decor is overrated – heirlooms are where it's at.

From cozy Christmas doormats to candle holders I’m actually excited to spend money on, I scrolled through all of Anthro’s offerings to find 11 festive faves that’ll also sway you to start setting up early this year.

This wall hanging is such a unique piece that you can customize based on each year's ornament collection. I definitely will be snagging this to curate my very own (and highly curated) ornament art installation. It's also a wonderful small space-friendly hack to hang up if you don't have space for a traditional tree!

It looks like we'll just be getting Jacob Elordi movies for the rest of time, and honestly, I'm thankful. (Even if that one cringy Kissing Booth scene still runs on a loop in the my brain). Before Swift Horses with Daisy Edgar Jones, Jacob is teaming up with another Hollywood titan you'll recognize from Pretty Woman: Richard Gere. And the movie looks incredibly emotional.

Here's all the latest info on Jacob Elordi and Richard Gere's brand new movie Oh, Canada.

What is the Oh Canada movie about?

Oh, Canada Plot

Oh, Canada follows the life of legendary (albeit fictional) filmmaker Leonard Fife. This story probably approaches Leo's career the way we think about Steven Spielberg's. AKA, he's very important. Leonard decides to tell his life story before he runs out of time. And even though he's got an impressive resumé, he also has to decide if he wants his Vietnam draft dodge and sticky relationships to become public knowledge.

"Leonard sits for an extended interview with his former student Malcolm (Michael Imperioli), relating candid stories about his younger self (Jacob Elordi) in the tumultuous 1960s and beyond," the synopsis says, adding that "at Leonard’s insistence, his wife and indispensable artistic partner, Emma (Uma Thurman), bears witness to it all."

How to watch Oh Canada?

Oh, Canada Release Date

Jacob Elordi's new movie is coming to theaters December 6, 2024 — the same day as Rachel Zegler's Y2K and Amy Adams' Nightb—ch!

Who's in the movie?

Kino Lorber

Oh, Canada Cast

The cast of Oh, Canada includes Richard Gere, Jacob Elordi, Uma Thurman, Michael Imperioli, and Victoria Hill, while the movie is written and directed by Paul Schrader (who also worked with Richard on 1980's American Gigolo!

What has the cast said about the movie?

Uma Thurman has been vocal about how excited she is to be a part of the project and told Deadline the movie feels like a "reverie" and has a "lyrical, sort of loosely knit, poetic" quality about it.

"The cinematic hand of Paul, of course, carried the day, as far as bringing this sort of illusionary dream together into something that you walk away from with the strong impression of a story," she says. "Just the presence of a master like Paul Schrader on a set of any size, is as distinct as, I don’t know, a warm wind. It’s like the wind that hits you when you get off a plane in the tropics. There’s only one thing of its ilk, and he’s kind of a master like that. You could really be anywhere; you can’t miss it."

That sounds like my kind of movie.

Director Paul Schrader revealed he fell in love with Jacob's performance the moment he saw him — which was before he took the world by storm in Priscilla. “I saw his performance on Zoom and, if this was 40 years ago, this is the guy I would have cast for American Gigolo,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
