How to Decorate Around an L-Shaped Couch

We all have that awkward corner space or piece of furniture we’re not sure how to best use. And no matter how long we scour Pinterest, we can’t seem to find the right way to make it work in our home. We’re here to help with our new series, Design Dilemma. In this series, we’ll explore different floor plan options for all your design challenges. First up on our list? How to position that super comfy, super big L-shaped couch.

We tapped Seattle interior designer Brianne MacLean of Hoedemaker Pfeiffer for some easy-to-execute ideas. With her tips and three different designs to pick from, you’ll be ready to rearrange all that furniture in no time.

Design 1: Corner couch

This floor plan is the most common (and the designer’s fave!). “I like this layout because it opens up the entire room and provides ample flow between the adjacent spaces,” MacLean says. By placing the couch in the corner, you get plenty of space in the center of the room for a coffee table and additional seating options.

The designer offers some suggestions on how to ensure the couch fits in with the rest of the room, with fluidity being key. “In order to avoid making it feel too disconnected with all the furniture pushed up against the walls, I would tie the entire space together with a large rug and provide floor pillows or small cube ottomans to encourage people to use the flex space in the middle of the room,” she says.

DESIGN 2: center COUCH

This design is a little more unexpected, and offers a small nook for a kid’s play area or plant zone. MacLean draws on her own experience of living with a toddler to give advice on how to make this doable for your space. Her number one tip? Map out the area effectively. “Making space delineations by using furniture is incredibly efficient, and in my case, allows me to corral all the toys out of sight,” she says.

DESIGN 3: room for a desk

Sometimes you need to put a desk in the living room, and just because you have a big L-shaped couch doesn’t mean you can’t do it. “I always find ways to incorporate desks into my projects because they are so helpful in keeping oneself organized for success during a busy life. Unfortunately, many of us do not have room for a dedicated office, so we have to get creative,” she says. By placing the couch in the corner, you can add a desk (preferably a secretary one) to the opposite wall and STILL keep everything in sync. “The key is to make sure everything looks tidy by using cohesive containers to organize all the bits and pieces,” MacLean says.

Ultimately, determining the purpose of the space will help you discover which of these three layouts works best for you. “If you are clear on what is most important and can achieve the functionality, then the rest will fall into place,” MacLean says. Consider us in the market for an L-shaped couch.

I've been working from home since long before it became the norm. And my "office" has evolved from a spindled-back chair at the kitchen table to an airy home office with a view. Back then, my productivity took a hit without essentials like adequate storage space, comfortable seating, and a bit of privacy. While it has its perks, working from home comes with its fair share of challenges; your home office setup doesn't need to be one of them.

Here are 10 ways to redesign your home office for better productivity!

Caio

1. Bad Lighting

Dim or harsh overhead lighting can strain your eyes and limit your focus. Try to get close to a window for natural light or use daylight bulbs to mimic sunlight to boost your mood, creativity, and focus. Find a desk lamp that works for you too!

Ella Jardim

2. Clutter Everywhere

A cluttered desk equals a cluttered mind, IMO. Reduce the stress that comes with a disorganized and cluttered desk by bringing in shelves and organizers; finding sleek cable-management solutions; and removing any unnecessary items to reduce visual distractions.

Vlada Karpovich

3. Uncomfortable Furniture

If you're sitting most of the day, it's so important to invest in a good desk chair. An unsupportive chair or poorly sized desk can be uncomfortable, making it harder to stay focused for long periods of time. Your back will thank you!

Ketut Subiyanto

4. No Boundaries Between Work and Home

Distractions at home like kids and partners can kill your productivity. Avoid blurring the line between work and home life by designating a private space, separate from high-traffic spaces, for your work hours if you can. Use rugs, curtains, or acoustic panels to reduce noise too.

5. Lack of Storage

I get it, they're not the best-looking pieces in your home, but without proper filing systems you’ll waste time hunting for important documents or supplies. Invest in modern storage options that look good too from Mustard Made and The Container Store.

6. Unoptimized Tech Setup

Slow Internet or outdated tech tools can make you feel totally frustrated and can slow down your productivity. Upgrade your Internet to a faster connection, and refresh your tech gadgets and programs to make sure you work more efficiently.

Ivan Samkov

7. Awkward Desk Placement

Placing your desk in a spot with too much noise, traffic, or distractions — like facing a TV — will guarantee to disrupt your concentration. Find a more zen spot where you can focus on the tasks of the day.

Anna Shvets

8. Ignoring Ergonomics

Check your monitor height, keyboard positioning, and add a wrist rest so you don't lead to feeling uncomfortable and fatigued, cutting your workday short.

Mikhail Nilov

9. Lack of Personalization

A sterile, uninspiring office design does your motivation and creativity no favors. Make work feel less like a chore by adding personal touches through artwork, personal photos, candles, some fresh flowers or plants. Greenery can improve air quality and actually reduce work stress. Add a little snack station for quick energy boosts and keep water handy. Also, your Zoom backgrounds should reflect your personality!

10. No Inspiration

No matter what you do — whether it's a creative work or something more analytical — you want to feel inspired. Personalization can help, but dive into vision boards, books, magazines, quotes that inspire your work and help you bring fresh ideas to your workday. Color psychology can help too: blues and greens encourage focus and reduce stress while pops of yellow or orange can spark creativity! Break out the paint if needed!

It's no big secret that Taylor Swift and Blake Lively are BFFs — but it's definitely shocking that Justin Baldoni would include the pop star in his recent $400 million lawsuit against his former It Ends With Usco-star. This back-and-forth feud began before It Ends With Useven debuted, and it's quickly becoming clear that it'll last long after any movie buzz dies down. Not so sure? Well, Justin just dragged Taylor into it all, stirring up even more drama. Here's what you need to know!

Here's how Taylor Swift got swept up into the Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni feud...

Cindy Ord/Getty Images

On January 16, 2025, Justin filed a 179-page, $400 million lawsuit against Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and their publicist. While there's obviously a lot to digest in the almost 200-page document, one allegation sticks out in particular — and yes, it includes Taylor Swift.

After Blake asked to "take a pass" at rewriting the scene where Lily meets Ryle in In Ends With Usduring pre-production, Justin eventually agreed to look at it despite his initial reluctance. When Justin didn't agree with Blake's take on the scene — something he described as "exceedingly mild resistance" — he alleges that she ignored him for days. Apparently Blake said that Justin's response to her rewrite "didn't feel great" — and that it allegedly upset both Ryan Reynolds and Taylor Swift.

Monica Schipper/Getty Images

According to Justin, he was also invited to Ryan and Blake's apartment for a meeting on evening, and Taylor also showed up. He claims she and Ryan were openly "praising" Blake's script, and allegedly made "the subtext" that Justin should just accept the rewrite very clear.

When Blake allegedly texted Justin about the exchange later, he claims she described Swift and Reynolds as "embarrassingly effusive" and her "most trusted partners." She allegedly wrote, "I think they wanted you and me to see how they felt about [the rewrites] because they've been by my side for far too many experiences where I've been overlooked."

Justin then says Blake texted, "If you ever get around to watching Game of Thrones, you'll appreciate that I'm Khaleesi, and like her, I happen to have a few dragons. For better or worse, but usually for better. Because my dragons also protect those I fight for. So really we all benefit from those gorgeous monsters of mine. you will too, I can promise you."

This all comes after Blake filed her own lawsuit against Justin in December 2024. Who knows what's next between these two — especially when you get Taylor Swift (and the Swifties) involved...

Kitchen renovations are no joke – they're a major investment, so you’ll want to think twice before committing to fleeting trends — especially for big-ticket items like cabinets, countertops, and appliances. I’ll admit it: I’m still without a backsplash five years later because I can’t commit! While it’s perfectly fine to follow your heart if you love a particular look, kitchens can quickly feel outdated when you lean too heavily on short-lived fads. To help you create a timeless, stylish space, we’ve rounded up outdated kitchen trends to avoid — and easy ways to modernize if your kitchen is stuck in the past.

Scroll to see if you have these outdated kitchen trends in your house right now!

Mark McCammon

1. All-White Kitchens

The all-white kitchen craze has officially run its course, often feeling cold and sterile — like say a doctor’s office. Today’s kitchens are all about warmth and character, with palettes in soft neutrals, earthy greens, or bold, moody shades like oxblood and midnight blue. Choose a color that speaks to you for a timeless, inviting space you'll love for years to come.

2. Granite Countertops

This early 2000s trend has been overdone and feels so dated now. Marble, sleek quartz, even butcher block are more classic choices.

Curtis Adams

3. Ornate Cabinetry

The color and detail of this traditional kitchen feels drab and dated. Instead, look for flat-panel or Shaker-style cabinets with clean, minimal lines.

Terry Magallanes

4. Farmhouse Decor

This kitchen is a lesson is don'ts. The grey vinyl flooring (especially hideous!), farmhouse stools, and white cabinetry hail from a decades-old trend that needs to disappear in 2025.

Home Depot

5. Glass Mosaic Tiles

Glass mosaics, popular in the 2000s and 2010s, tend to lean toward a transitional aesthetic, which is the opposite of an organic, minimalist, or vintage-inspired design kitchen are craving now. The grout lines are bit difficult to clean too between all the tiny tiles. Zellige tile or a slab of marble are a more sophisticated look for today's kitchens.

Level 23 Media

6. Black & White

The stark contrast between black and white can come across as harsh and overly dramatic, a look that peaked in the 2010s. The farmhouse sign doesn't help warm it up either. Soften the look with earthy, natural tones.

Curtis Adams

7. Subway Tile

Subway tile is classic, so there’s no need to rip it out if it still brings you joy. However, the white subway tile paired with dark grout has overstayed its welcome. This overdone trend became so ubiquitous that it lost its charm and individuality, leaving kitchens looking more cookie-cutter than full of character.

8. Industrial Lighting

This nod to the past needs to, sorry, stay in the past. Look for organic, natural forms and lighting that reflects your kitchen's unique aesthetic.

Shutterstock

9. Tuscan Style

This rustic kitchen feels dated with its heavy, ornate features like dark wood cabinetry and trim. Go for clean, brighter spaces.

Shutterstock

10. Tile Countertops

Natural stone, marble, and wood are trending for 2025. Grout-filled countertops like this one are not. Time to go!

Max Vakhtbovycn

11. Moroccan Mosaic Tile

Kitchens are becoming elegant places to cook, eat, and gather. This busy design can look cheap. The white mid-century Eames-style chairs, sorry to say, are also out.

Andrea Davis

12. Barn Doors

Using barn doors between the kitchen and other spaces is a look that is officially out. They proved to be not that functional and the look is now dated and too kitschy. Buh bye!

Things are heating up between Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet. The celebrity couple, who went public with their relationship in January of 2023 are only getting closer, and according to one source, who says that Kylie's already considering Timothée “the one," they're getting serious.

Here's the latest news on Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet's relationship.

Kylie Jenner "definitely" sees her relationship with Timothée Chalamet as a longterm thing.

According to the Page Six insider, Kylie Jenner “has never felt like this about anybody else before and definitely sees a future with him," especial since she “feels like Timothée is so different from all her other exes she’s dated in the past.”

Kylie's dating history involves names like Tyga and Travis Scott (who's the father of her kids Stormi and Aire), but she's never had a relationship like this.

A source told People in December 2023 that Kylie and Timmy are "incredibly happy" together.

“He is very supportive of her career and she of his,” the source said. “They both try to attend important events for each other.” And in addition to being super supportive, Timothée Chalamet is “in awe of everything [Kylie] is accomplishing” and “especially thinks she is an amazing mom.” I can't get enough of these two!

Most recently, Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet got cozy at the 2025 Golden Globes, where Timothée was nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture for his role as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.

Timothée rocked the goatee he's had since he started filming Marty Supreme along with a dark suit and a blue tie worn like a scarf. Kylie looked gorgeous in a silver 1999 Versace dress that Elizabeth Hurley wore to the CFDA Fashion Awards that same year in New York.

I can't wait to see this couple make many more appearances together!
