How to Eat Throughout the Day for Maximum Productivity

Your brain has A LOT to do. It works overtime making sure your body and mind are functioning at every conceivable level, so naturally, its cells require twice the amount of energy as any other organ. To give your brain the energy it needs to crush it at work and make it to that late night workout class, you’ve got to feed it well throughout the day. Mental grinds drain glucose from the blood, so it’s important to consistently keep your levels in supply. We’re sharing a model daily menu to support your productivity and keep your brain humming along.

Breakfast

The first food you eat should be fruit. Fruit is a complex carbohydrate with long chains of sugar molecules that are gradually broken down by the body, slowly releasing glucose (brain food) and extending the energy you gain from them. Coffee is great to give yourself a short-lived zing, but if you really want to jump-start your energy for the day, fruit is the way to go. A grapefruit or a bowl of berries are high in complex carbohydrates, and a bright way to wake up your palette.

Brunch

We’re calling this brunch, but really, it’s second breakfast. Grazing throughout the day consistently keeps your brain humming without overloading on big meals. Second breakfast should include a good bit of protein to get your muscles ready for the day. Eggs, cereal or a sandwich will start working on your memory and attention immediately. Egg yolks in particular contain large amounts of choline, the nutrient that’s been proven to boost brain power by speeding up signals between nerve cells.

Lunch

Try to make lunch your biggest meal of the day. It’s better to keep your body fed throughout the day, when you need the brain fuel to get work done, and to eat lighter for dinner, so your body can rest. Just like fruits, vegetables break down slowly in the body and can effectively sustain your brain fuel. Mixing up raw and cooked veggies ensures you’re getting a variety of nutrients, and the addition of protein will help keep you full.

Snack

The stretch between lunch and dinner can feel long without a snack. When that midday slump creeps up on you, fight back with a handful of nuts. Nuts, especially walnuts, balance omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and neutralize your blood sugar levels, so you feel energized and productive instead of famished and weak.

Dinner

Keep it light to allow your body the rest it needs after digesting all day. Taper off the energy you’re feeding your brain so it can wind down and regenerate, causing an easier and deeper sleep. Fish is a good choice because it’s high in Omega-3’s, which build brain cell membranes for protection and aid in emotional balance, resulting in a positive, easy-going temperament.

Drink

Keeping hydrated throughout the day reduces stress hormones, allowing you to complete tasks with ease. At least 80 ounces of water or non-caffeinated tea relaxes the brain and induces a calm focus. If you’re in the mood for something fruity, have grapefruit juice as a snack to release glucose slowly while also keeping up your fluids. Keep sugary drinks off the menu — they make your pancreas secrete insulin, which triggers your body’s cells to leach glucose from your bloodstream and your brain, causing you to lose concentration and think poorly.

And it’s totally fine to have a cocktail after work. Moderate alcohol consumption enhances blood and oxygen flow to the brain and can ease you into the winding-down period of the day. See you at happy hour!

The story, about a medical examiner who returns to her hometown, and a rocky relationship with her sister, feels like Sullivan's Crossing meets Big Little Lies, and I am so locked in. Even if you've never read the books before, this is going to be one show you won't be able to stop watching.

Scarpetta Plot

Yes a TV show based on the Kay Scarpetta books is coming to Amazon! The crime series — which has been greenlit for two seasons — will follow Chief Medical Examiner Kay, played by Nicole Kidman (and reportedly inspired by CME Marcella Farinelli Fierro), who reenters her former position in her Virginia hometown. Not only is she navigating the ins and outs of her work life, but she's also balancing relationships with her sister Dorothy, her coworkers, and all the secrets that come with them.

And apparently, the scripts in and of themselves stopped Nicole in her tracks! She tells Vanity Fair the project is "terrifying" because "it’s so well-written. It’s crazy how I’m frightened reading it. I haven’t done that. I can’t think of a film I’ve done where it was so terrifying. Like what? The Others wasn’t terrifying."

Jamie Lee Curtis will play Kay Scarpetta's sister Dorothy, while Nicole Kidman will play the role of Kay. The fact that the show is tentatively called Scarpetta makes me think the series will focus just as much on Dorothy — and their relationship — as it does on Kay. Ariana DeBose, Bobby Cannavale, Simon Baker, Rosy McEwen, Jake Cannavale, and Bobby Cannavale have also been cast.

Nicole is super excited to work with Jamie, and told Vanity Fair that the experience has been "glorious" so far. "I was like, 'I’ll do it with you, but you have to play my sister. You have to go with me.' And she’s like, 'Okay.' So, we’re producing it together and we’re in it together—and that is glorious. That’s what I mean, where you go, 'Okay. Who’s got the same amount of passion and enthusiasm?' Look at her. I mean, she’s unbelievable. She is a force."

It helps me find balance and unwind,” says Maria Londono, founder of Disrupt3rs, an app that helps creators learn the language of business in a fun and interactive way. “I also have a weekly ballroom salsa date with my husband, Francisco. These moments make a significant difference”


It’s hard to be fully present when managing and growing your business is always on your mind. But taking the time to clear your thoughts and rest your mind has its advantages to your business. You can train your mind to be more focused, resilient and better equipped to handle the challenges of a small business owner.

Here are five ways a mindfulness practice can help you build connection, boost your creativity, and grow your business:

Reduce stress. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation and deep breathing exercises, have shown to reduce stress and increase the feeling of relaxation. “I always prioritize my meditation practice,” says Maria. “Finding a balance is an ongoing effort, and though it’s not perfect, it’s definitely worth it.”

Make better decisions. When founders are more mindful, they become more attuned to their thoughts and emotions, helping them recognize when they’re reacting impulsively. Feeling clear-headed, calm, and ready to face the day can help you consider multiple perspectives, take the time to evaluate risks, and make strategic decisions for the long term vs. knee-jerk reactions that can cloud your judgment and affect the long-term success of your business.

Nurture your creativity. Your best ideas come from giving yourself the space to explore new ideas without the pressure to go, go, go all the time. Tap into your creativity by taking a midday walk, doing yoga, or just closing your eyes. “I nurture my creativity by hanging out with my daughter. We read, dance, and play together,” says Maria. Tapping into your innate creativity can lead to innovative solutions, product improvements, and fresh approaches to how you run your business.

Increase focus and productivity. A daily mindfulness practice can train your mind to stay focused on the task at hand rather than getting distracted by everything on your to-do list. This healthy focus time can lead to better productivity too, allowing you to accomplish more in less time and make more efficient use of your resources.

Improve communication and relationships. Being a great communicator is key to running a successful business. You may have employees, partners, or clients you need to communicate with clearly and calmly on a daily basis. “I have a deep appreciation for my co-founder,” says Maria. “We keep each other balanced and don’t mind talking shop during our downtime.”
