6 Tips for Finding a New Job When You Already Have One

Even under the best circumstances, finding a new job isn’t easy. You need to put together the perfect resume, secure awesome recommendations that will make potential employers see that they couldn’t possibly not hire you, and interview with the confidence that there’s no one more qualified for the job.

The situation becomes even more complicated when you throw your existing work schedule in the mix. While it’s often said that it’s easier to get a job when you already have one, that’s not exactly reassuring when you consider the fact that a whole job search somehow has to happen while you’re also trying to do your best work for your current boss. After all, it’s not like you have unlimited hours in a day.

To help ensure that you have the best chances of securing a new dream job while maintaining your professionalism and rock star status at the current one, we consulted with LinkedIn career expert Blair Decembrele. Keep scrolling for her six tips. Happy searching!

1. Get clear on what you’re looking for. It’s easy to understand what you might be trying to get away from (AKA your current job), but it can be more difficult to have a firm grasp on what you’re actually looking for in a new position. “It’s important that you first take a step back to identify the reasons you want to leave your current position,” Decembrele says. “Are you looking for more growth opportunities, for a better culture fit, or to make a career pivot to a new industry altogether?” Considering these questions in the context of your existing role might help bring focus to your search.

2. Update your LinkedIn profile. Anyone who’s ever embarked on a job search knows that it can be an all-consuming process, but when you invest in perfecting your LinkedIn page upfront, it becomes one less thing for you to worry about as you continue to check other items off your list. Decembrele suggests adding visuals to your experience section (where applicable, for instance, if you’re a graphic designer) and highlighting aspects of your skills and identity that might live outside the office, such as volunteer work or passion projects. A profile picture can yield you up to 21 times more profile views, so make sure to include an up-to-date, professional-looking shot.

3. Take advantage of your network. Nearly three-quarters of professionals were hired at a company where they had an existing connection, according to Decembrele, so don’t take your network for granted. Reach out to professional and personal connections so you can get in touch with people who can offer you advice as you look for your next opportunity. Networking is important in any job search, but it’s especially crucial that you rally supporters around you when time is limited by your existing work schedule.

4. Reach out to recruiters. Recruiters can be a huge help in managing some of the legwork for you so that you can remain focused on your current role. Ask a trusted colleague if they have any recruiters they can recommend, or turn on LinkedIn’s Open Candidates feature — assuming your profile is up-to-date, of course. This feature will privately signal to recruiters online that you’re open to new jobs, and LinkedIn hides the signal from recruiters at your company or affiliated companies so you don’t need to worry about arousing suspicion.

5. Implement a routine. Perhaps the most challenging part of engaging in a job search while you’re currently employed is maintaining the motivation to look for your next gig after a long day at the office. Decembrele recommends that you establish some specific routines to keep your job and your potential new job separate. Start by setting aside 20 minutes each day for job-hunt-related activities. Scroll job openings while you wait for dinner to cook, or send outreach emails as soon as you get home from the office. If you’re not finding success right away, you can always add time and change up the routine as needed.

6. Stay professional at the office. “No matter where you are in your job hunt, it’s important that you’re always putting your most professional foot forward,” Decembrele says. “You never want to burn a bridge. People in your current company can play a vital role in your job search by helping to connect you to contacts in your industry and serving as key references for your next role.” Keep your cool at work now so that people will be more likely to support you in your transition to a new opportunity.

How To Build A Local Community When You’re A Digital Creator

What's an unexpected business challenge that you've had to face and how did you overcome it?

The hardest thing for me was my sister passed away and I ended up taking custody of my nieces. I ended up being a single mom of four kids. This is the thing that transitioned my whole entire life. I stopped doing web design and started my podcast Mom Owned and Operated. I wanted to reconnect with other moms and figure out how they were able to run their businesses and raise a family and take care of themselves because I wasn't able to do all three at the same time. Through that journey, I realized that I really needed to connect with other people and how important it was for my business. It helped me to create that community that I was yearning for that I didn't realize that I needed.

What's a recent small win for your business?

For me, the win was just pivoting back to something that I actually wanted to do. Also, I’ve started to say no to things that I no longer want to do.

Who is a woman in business that you look up to and why?

I have always admired and looked up to Amy Porterfield [author of Two Weeks Notice]. I listened to her all the time when I was starting out. I think that she's amazing and I love her stuff. She just seems like a very genuine person.

Is there a resource that has made an impact on you as an entrepreneur?

I listen to a lot of audio books. One of my favorites that has been huge for me is You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero. I was told when I first started my business, by a friend who was a business coach, that I have a mindset problem. Ten years ago, I had no idea even what “mindset” was. Sincero’s book helped me to see what she meant by “mindset” and helped me adjust that mindset and fix some of the things that I didn't realize were broken.

How has the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program helped propel your business forward?

There are a lot of things that I have loved about it. There are local networking and training opportunities, and that has been great, and the online training is very valuable. It's a great resource. I find that marketing needs a three-tiered approach, meaning you need to network it locally, socially, and then also have a very comprehensive online approach to your marketing. One of the Verizon Small Business trainings that I took was all about taking advantage of your local resources. I found that to be extremely valuable because often people think they need to just focus on social media. I don't think that people focus enough on their local community.

Keri Russell "Would Totally" Do 'Felicity' Reboot — On One Condition

Reboots and rewatches are all the rage right now, and for good reason. They're nostaltic, they're cozy, and they really make me wish I was a teenager in the 00s. In addition to Scott Patterson saying he's "always hopeful" for Gilmore Girls to come back, Keri Russell just revealed how much she'd love to revisit Felicity, too!

    While promoting The Diplomat season 2, Keri Russell said she'd love to bring the series back if the story made sense. “I would totally do that if it was the right stuff,” she told E! News. “Mandy had a good pitch for it, actually. A really good pitch for, like… life wasn’t going great and, you know, didn’t work out. And she was supposed to be all these things. And then she bumps into someone…Never say never!"

    In case you haven't seen the show (which ran from 1998-2002 and is available to stream on Hulu, FYI), Felicity follows Keri Russell's titular character, who's in for a rude awakening when she follows her high school crush to college in New York City. But once she's there, she realizes just how big the Big Apple really is.

    The series also starred Scott Speedman as Ben Covington, Scott Foley as Noel Crane, Amy Jo Johnson as Julie Emrick, and Tangi Miller as Elena Tyler. Keri actually said they "all still talk all the time!”

    “They’re like my total pals,” she says.

    What else has the cast said about bringing Felicity back?

    Scott Foley told ET that he'd consider coming back for another installment of Felicity, even though he's been against a reboot in the past. "I had always said I wouldn't — you know, there's no reason to do anything," he said. "But just to be with them again, I think would be really nice... When we did the 20th reunion down in Texas at the [ATX Television Festival], we were onstage in a panel answering questions, and I missed being with them."

    "I don't know if it could ever really happen, you know, Felicity was such a specific show at a specific time that took took place in a specific moment in people's lives," he continues. "And it's really hard to recapture — especially with the amount of gray going on right now."

    In March, Greg Gunberg (who played Sean Blumberg) hinted that there'd be some "GIGANTIC Felicity News Coming VERY Soon."

    So are we getting a Felicity reboot? It looks like, in Keri Russell's words, never say never!

    Three weeks before The Diplomat season two premiere, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria officially confirmed that The Diplomat season three received the green light while on stage at the Bloomberg Screentime Conference in Los Angeles. Shortly after the news was revealed, The Diplomat creator Debora Cahn shared (per Variety), “After an amazing summer shooting in the U.K., we brought London home to NY.” She continued, “Best of both worlds—filming in Brooklyn. We love doing this. We’re so excited to get to keep going.” With so many TV show cancellations this year, we are so excited to see the continuation of Kate’s story in the U.K. Here’s to more adventures with our favorite diplomat!
