11 Ways to Get Ahead of Holiday Stress

You see the holiday season approaching on the calendar, and suddenly, you find yourself in action mode. You’re scrolling through your favorite online stores, flagging items that might make the perfect gift for your loved ones. You’re shaking the dust off the decorations that have been tucked in the basement for the last 12 months. You’re picking out the best cookie recipes to share with friends at your annual holiday gathering.

These are all important preparations, but there’s a lot more to jeholiday planning. We all know how stressful this season can get, and being proactive about your physical health, emotional well-being, and, yes, festive prep can help make a big dent in those stress levels. Keep scrolling for 11 expert tips that will help you get ahead of your seasonal worries.

1. Take a social media hiatus. According to a recent survey from Everyday Health, 60 to 70 percent of young adults say they check their social media platforms at least daily. Why not dial that back for the holidays? “Give yourself the gift of disconnecting and see how great it can be to live in the moment with loved ones,” Everyday Health editor in chief Maureen Connolly says. “Be grateful for what you have and distance yourself from the comparison cycle and obligatory feelings to comment and post, which will add unnecessary stress — especially during the holidays, when social media use increases.” Sounds like one less thing to worry about!

2. Stick to your routine. It’s tempting to shake up your typical schedule when the holidays come around, but women’s health expert and BINTO founder Suzie Welsh emphasizes the importance of routine amid the revelry. Maintain your usual wellness habits as much as possible in November and December to ensure that your body (hello, immune system!) is in fighting shape to fully enjoy the season. Beautyrest sleep expert Dr. Rebecca Robbins notes that maintaining a consistent bedtime is especially key.

3. Wrap gifts as you buy them. If you’re anything like us, you tend to buy gifts over the course of the few weeks leading up to the holiday celebrations, which leaves you with a huge pile of packages to wrap at the last minute. Maybe you love turning gift-wrapping into an occasion of its own, but if you find that the process actually just drives you crazy, Scotch Brand‘s most gifted wrapper Alton Dulaney suggests that you wrap presents along the way instead. It seems so simple… why haven’t the rest of us been doing this for, like, ever?

4. Be intentional about fitness. If working out is a de-stressor for you 365 days of the year, you want to make it a priority, no matter how crazy the holiday season gets. RSP Nutrition nutritional consultant Monica Auslander Moreno encourages you to set extra measures in place to ensure that you make the time you need to sweat out your stress at the gym. Pre-book and pay ahead of time for classes to boost your accountability and lay out your exercise clothes before bed so you see them right when you wake up.

5. Create time for yourself. Yes, the holidays might officially be all about friends, family, hosting, giving, and general togetherness, but if you throw yourself all the way into doing things for others for the entire season, you are bound to burn out. Co-founder of support network app Supportiv Helena Plater-Zyberk suggests getting proactive about your alone time. Plan for a manicure, massage, or cozy day around the house between all the holiday celebrations. And if all else fails? “It’s okay to make an excuse and disappear when you’re about to hit your limit on family interactions,” Plater-Zyberk says.

6. Streamline gift-giving. Find one or two luxury items, then stock up on the rest and give them to several people on your list. We wouldn’t necessarily recommend this for close friends or family members (or people who are going to be in attendance at the same holiday party), but it’s a great way to complete the shopping process for coworkers, acquaintances, teachers, and more, per Jessica Turner, the blogger behind The Mom Creative and author of Stretched Too Thin.

7. Go theme-y. Already worried about how you’ll set this year’s holiday celebration apart from the rest? Elana Karp, head chef and culinary co-founder of meal subscription service Plated, suggests that you start planning with a fun theme in mind. “Even during the holiday season, a theme can help give you focus while planning and will make it fun for the guests too,” she says. Holiday prep will feel less stressful when you’re putting a twist on things with a country, year, or decade.

8. Decorate in low-traffic areas. Your most beloved holiday decorations probably bring a big smile to your face, but they can also interfere with your daily tasks and activities. Have you ever tried to make dinner on a countertop covered with festive figurines? It’s not easy! Co-founders of design platform SwatchPop! Jessica McRae and Kristen Yonson recommend that you focus your decorations on rooms and areas that are visible, but not necessarily used or touched. “Go all out on your mantel, shelves, sideboards, and front porch,” they say. “The house will look festive, but it won’t interrupt your family’s lifestyle.” And when your home is peaceful, you’ll feel more peaceful!

9. Take a bath. A bubble bath may feel like a luxury, something you’ll only have time to enjoy during that all-too-rare “you time.” The truth is, though, that a long soak in the tub can do so much more than chill you out. “A bath can offer huge physical and mental benefits,” reiki healer, chartered herbalist, and Crystal Hills founder Andrea S. Barone notes.”Soaking in a therapeutic bath allows you to detoxify and rejuvenate. Adding in this nighttime ritual can help you sleep better at night, ease muscle pain, and even burn calories.” Start working a bath into your routine ASAP to help minimize holiday strain.

10. Work ahead on wardrobe. Don’t find yourself in a last-minute pinch without an outfit for an upcoming party — and don’t feel like you have to spend tons of time and money designing the perfect holiday looks. Figure out how to create multiple looks using the existing staple pieces you already have in your closet. Digital wardrobe app Finery is a great resource to help you do just that.

11. Feel the feels. There’s a lot to celebrate during the holiday season, but it’s an emotional time too — and that’s okay. “If you find yourself feeling sad or worried, allow yourself to experience these emotions before making efforts to let them go,” Dr. Lindsay Henderson, a psychologist who treats patients virtually via telehealth app LiveHealth Online, tells us. “Giving yourself permission to feel negative emotions actually makes it easier to then move on from them.”

Target

KitchenAid 5qt 10-Speed Stand Mixer

I know your sister spends her nights reading a book instead of binge watching new shows sometimes so make sure she has a cute lamp on her bedside table. The fourth trimester aka postpartum can be really tough for some moms. If your sister has recently given birth and is struggling, don't be afraid to let one of her gifts be these affirmation cards. Who's in The White Lotus season 3 cast?

Fabio Lovino/HBO

The White Lotus season 3 cast is slowly rolling in, with characters which range from 18 years old to 80-something, and include a patriarch, a corporate executive, an actress, two mothers, a misfit, and a yogi. Naturally, the internet immediately started fan casting who'd get to be in the new season. Fans have tagged everyone from Dianna Agron (by far the most popular fan cast) to Keke Palmer and Harry Styles. I feel like it's only a matter of time before we see Madelyn Cline. 👀

So far, The White Lotus season 3 cast includes Leslie Bibb, Miloš Biković, Carrie Coon, Christian Friedel, Walton Goggins, Dom Hetrakul, Sarah Catherine Hook, Jason Isaacs, Michelle Monaghan, Sam Nivola, Morgana O’Reilly, Lek Patravadi, Shalini Peiris, Parker Posey, Natasha Rothwell, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Tayme Thapthimthong, and Aimee Lou Wood.

On February 12, it was announced the BLACKPINK's Lisa would join The White Lotus season 3, but her role has yet to be disclosed. It will be the singer's acting debut, and she'll be credited under her given name Lalisa Manobal. Since the season begins filming this month, we're sure to get updates soon! Jennie from BLACKPINK also made her acting debut recently in HBO's The Idol!

What is The White Lotus season 3 about?

Mario Perez/HBO

“It’s going to be a supersized White Lotus,” creator Mike White told EW. “It’s going to be longer, bigger, crazier. I don’t know what people will think, but I am super excited, so at least for my own barometer, that’s a good thing…I’m super excited about the content of the season.”

While the first season provided commentary on money, and the second season highlighted sex, Mike says at the end of the second season finale featurette, “The White Lotus: Unpacking S2 E7,” that he hoped at the time to move to something resembling even more of a black comedy: “I think the third season would be maybe a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality. It feels like it could be a rich tapestry to do another round at White Lotus.”

Who is the recurring character in White Lotus season 3?

Mario Perez/HBO

Natasha Rothwell, who we all loved in season one as spa manager Belinda Lindsey, will return for The White Lotus season 3. No other cast members have been announced just yet.

“I've just finished the season 3 scripts, and I'm going to have to say White Lotus is going to give you a run for your money,” Natasha tells PEOPLE. While she “can’t confirm or deny” just how much we'll see her in season 3, Natasha does promise "it's an excellent season and people are going to be very pleased.” We can't wait!

Where is season 3 of White Lotus going to be?

Mario Perez/HBO

The White Lotus season 3 will take place in Thailand. The show will be filming in and around Koh Samui, Phuket, and Bangkok, Thailand (via Variety).

Does Daphne sleep with Ethan?

HBO

There was a lot to process at the end of The White Lotus season 2, but one detail that wasn't confirmed at the time was whether Daphne (played by Meghann Fahy) and Ethan (Will Sharpe) ended up sleeping together. However, Meghann pretty much confirmed it when she talked about the season with Variety.

"I definitely think something happened," she says. "I don't know what exactly happened, but I do know that it was something. Honestly, in that moment, I think Daphne just saw this broken man and wanted to do something to make him feel more empowered in her own strange way. I really don’t think that she led him there to get back at Cameron or Harper."

Will Jennifer Coolidge be in season 3 of White Lotus?

Mario Perez/HBO

No, sadly Jennifer Coolidge is not coming back for The White Lotus season 3. “I’m jealous of everyone that’s going," she tells TODAY.com. "I just want to stress I’m not a good sport about it, but there’s nothing I can do. When they kill you, you have to accept it. Because it means they’re not calling for your costume sizes or anything."

But Jennifer is just as sad as we are that she's not in the new installment! "I just want to say in all honesty, I’m very sad I’m not in it," she continues. “I think it’s going to be good. There’s going to be all sorts of good stuff in it, probably great sex stuff. You know how Mike White writes — it’s never, never a dull moment. I think he’s going to slay with this one.”

Will Meghann Fahy reprise her role as Daphne?

HBO

So far an actual confirmation is TBD, but we could see Daphne and other stars from The White Lotus grace our screens at a point during Season 3. She told Deadline, "He [Mike White] did once say that he would love to do like an episode with Theo and me and the couple from the first season, Alex and Jake."

We're imagining how chaotic that episode will be if it comes to fruition!

What's your biggest theory for The White Lotus season 3? Until the new installment drops on Max and HBO, read up on the Fall Movies you won't want to miss in 2024!

This post has been updated.

The period ofThanksgiving through the New Year is when with family, often after not seeing them for several months out of the year. This is usually the time where everyone likes to catch up with each other to see if there's potential news they may have missed. But, this sometimes lead to the inevitable prodding questions that can make us want to crawl under the dinner table.

At some point, at least one person usually thinks it okay to ask super personal questions between eating yummy ham and candy recipes. They can range from questions about the class you flunked to your love life, putting you in an uncomfortable spotlight. You may feel like screaming at the top of your lungs, but licensed psychologist Dr. Michele Leno, host of the Mind Matters with Dr. Michelepodcast and therapist Alison McKleroy, LMFT, founder of Center for Spark®and author of the Self-Compassion Journal, have a few suggestions to help you avoid that.

Here's How To Politely Shut Down Your Family's Prodding Questions Over The Holidays!

  • Being around family during the holidays can increase the likelihood of juggling questions you don't wanna answer.
  • Recognizing your own needs and values will help you identify how you want to respond to your family's questions.
  • Setting clear boundaries with your family — and for yourself — can also help you communicate more effectively with your family.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and other self-care tools can help you better navigate awkward and tense family scenarios.

What is it about the holidays that trigger uncomfortable or prodding family questions?

Yaroslav Shuraev

If you had a dollar for every time some asked something that created awkward tension during the holidays, how much money would you have? For some reason, it always feels like this is the time for people to ask the most embarrassing questions in the word. But, what if it wasn't done on purpose? Dr. Michele says, "While many love holidays, others dread them. Those who have close family relationships approach the season with ease."

Still, she acknowledges how that's not always the case for everyone. "People with strained family relationships find holidays unbearable. The closeness can encourage prodding that feels invasive. Sometimes, people simply have a need to know the ins and outs of your life."

However, you don't have to feed anyone's curiosity if you don't want to!

How can I politely say that a question is bothering me?

RDNE Stock project

Your first reaction to certain questions may be shock and embarrassment followed by irritation or anger. Those are normal responses when something catches us off guard. While our emotions are justified, the way we want to respond may not be. McKleroy says, "First, it’s crucial to recognize your own needs or values that are stirred up by the question. If your aunt asks you, 'Are you still at that job, or did you finally find a better one,' this question could likely bring up a need for acknowledgement — maybe you want your aunt to see the value in your work."

She further explains, "It could also point to your need for autonomy and freedom to make career choices on your own terms without feeling pressured. You can respond by saying, 'Yep, I'm still at that job, and I'm learning a lot and enjoying being there right now,'" which places the ball in your court without you cursing her name.

This is the time to be curious if you're not sure what your needs are. Like McKleroy says, they're a good indicator of why certain questions bother you. Truthfully, she believes you look at invasive questions as a good thing. "Navigating personal questions from family, especially the kind that feel intrusive, is a chance to courageously practice protecting your peace and setting empowered boundaries," McKleroy says.

Still, you likely need to set boundaries with your family. "Another way you can navigate prodding questions is by expressing your need for privacy in a kind way. If your grandfather asks you about your dating life, you can say, 'I really appreciate your interest, and right now, I’m keeping that part of my life private. I’ll happily share more when I’m ready,'" she suggests. It's a great way for you to "honor his care while respecting your own boundaries," according to her.

What if I'm afraid to set boundaries with my family?

Setting boundaries with anyone isn't always easy, especially if you're a people pleaser or empath. But Dr. Leno says, "It is best to set boundaries up front, understanding that family may or may not respect them." Echoing McKleroy's thoughts about how to redirect certain questions, she says you can tell someone "now is not the time to talk about it."

If you're still afraid of pushback for setting a boundary, she encourages you to "talk to the host or another family member to help you out." Based on her experience, she feels "there is usually someone willing to redirect subjects as needed." If it helps, I've been known to ask my mom or sister an unrelated question to what I'm being asked to signal that I'm feeling anxious about something I've been asked.

Your apprehension about setting boundaries isn't in vain though. It's a real feeling based on a number of things. Dr. Leno says, "Establishing boundaries can be difficult for someone hoping to maintain peace or avoid conflict. They fear appearing hostile. However, your well-being comes first."

What can I do if my family chooses to ignore my boundaries?

Nicole Michalou

Like Dr. Leno said, everyone isn't going to honor your boundaries based on things that have nothing to do with you. It's hard not to take things personal, but it's worth learning how not to internalize their lack of respect. "There are times when your family will disregard your boundaries, so brace yourself. Prepare to protect your mental space, and stand your ground," informs Dr. Leno.

Also, she says that "even if your family repeatedly oversteps, your ability to stick to your boundaries is more important than their willingness to respect them." Should you feel depleted trying to mentally and emotionally guard yourself, she wants you to "take a break by exiting the room or house or venue altogether."

I personally love doing the later if I'm unable to stay grounded when fielding prodding questions and think I'm about to say the wrong thing. Taking a break usually gives me time to calm down and find something else to focus on.

If you still need help learning how to deal with your family's invasive questions, there are CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) tools you can rely on. They've been a huge life saver for me which is why I'm always sprinkling them throughout different family and self-care articles. For anyone who's unfamiliar with what CBT is, Dr. Leno says it "focuses on self-management" because "people learn to regulate their emotions by managing their thoughts."

Realistically, the holidays shouldn't cause you to feel stressed out. "If you're feeling emotionally drained leading up to the holidays, your thinking may be the culprit. Your worst-case-scenario think will cause an anxiety build-up that feels unmanageable," warns Dr. Leno.

Instead, she wants to try developing "some self-care tools" like:

  • "Only sharing what makes you comfortable"
  • "Refusing to answer certain questions because the person asking will get over it"
  • Managing your anxiety with deep breathing"
  • Avoiding the all-or-nothing mindset. It is perfectly fine to limit your participation in the festivities. Give yourself permission to leave early if necessary."

When it comes to Thanksgiving, everyone usually knows who's making what. Grandma handles her famous desserts. Your aunt always comes in clutch with the green bean casserole. And your cousin can (sometimes) be relied upon to bring the plates everyone likes – you know, the big platters with the separated sections, so the food doesn't touch. But what happens when the mac and cheese person is at their in-laws for Thanksgiving? You take a few deep breaths, open up Safari, and start googling for the best mac and cheese recipe that you can find.

So, now you're here.

Sure, it would be a lot easier to call that person up for the recipe, but it's your time now. And since you're the holiday underdog this year, we've supplied a few recipes that are sure to earn you that permanent "mac and cheese person" position.

If there's one thing I'd wish for all of us, it's that we can get to the end of our lives with no regrets. That sounds like a platitude, but I mean it!! The sentiment can range from traveling to different countries to mending a friendship we thought was over to finally checking off a major bucket list item. And after 28 years, Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt and his friends have no regrets in the Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning trailer.

"You've always been on the right side," Ving Rhames' Luther tells Ethan. "I have no regrets and neither should you." And for the Top Gun actor (who's famous for doing his own stunts), apparently that includes scuba diving and hanging off a plane after he drove a motorcycle off a cliff in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. No biggie. Here's everything you need to know about Mission Impossible 8, coming to theaters in 2025.
