Here’s How to Host Friendsgiving on a Dime

Let’s be honest — hosting an event can be a scary experience for your wallet. There’s the cost of the food, decor, servingware, and maybe even extra tables and chairs. Here at Brit + Co, we’ve hosted many Friendsgivings over the years. From college dorm rooms, to one-bedroom apartments, to houses, we’ve squeezed our friends into all types of places. The key to a successful, low-cost Friendsgiving is keeping it potluck-style and taking advantage of discount stores and paper products to create decor. Follow along below to learn how to create paper decor that will dress up your space (on a budget) for one of the best holidays of the year: Friendsgiving.

How to Host a Cheap Friendsgiving

Flowers, and even fake flowers, are pretty expensive. To cut down on costs for Friendsgiving, we decided to make a table runner out of paper leaves.

Materials + Tools:

Download and print our leaf template. Trace the leaves onto various colors of paper and cut out. Our runner is made up of about 50 leaves.

Vary the sizes and cuts of the leaves. Some leaves are from the template and others are just teardrop shapes with slits cut out of the center and sides.

Cut a strip of ribbon that is about two feet long and attach leaves using a hot glue gun.

Yes, it’s that easy. Pro tip: Choose a color scheme that complements and adds a pop of color to your tablescape.

Felt banners are great but kinda costly. Luckily, you can get the same cute look with paper, streamers, and letter stickers. This banner is so adorable you might just want to keep it around and incorporate it into your gallery wall.

Materials + Tools:

Create a template for a pentagon shape that measures about four inches in height. Cut out as many as you’ll need for your desired phrase.

Then stick on those letters, girl!

Cut small pieces of streamer and fringe the bottom. Roll up to create a tassel and hot glue onto the bottom point of each letter in the banner.

Use hot glue or tape to attach the letters to string and then get ready to hang and marvel at all the glory (and saved dollar dollar bills, y’all).

Brown Paper Friendsgiving Placemats

This is the easiest and cheapest way to update your table for Friendsgiving. It will even make a folding table look like a million bucks. Keep the paint pens out on the table for guests to leave notes for each other or the host.

Use your hand-lettering skills to create name tags for your guests. Switch it up by seating two new friends next to each other — or even better, play matchmaker and sit two single friends next to each other.

Oh, and if you’re unsure about your lettering prowess, we’ve got about a dozen online classes to help you level up!

Having more than four people over? Create lounge seating with large pillows on the ground and use coffee tables or even nightstands to increase table space.

Don’t be afraid to leave the traditional color palette behind and introduce newer, brighter colors. These colors still bring fall feelings into play but add a playful touch to the event.

Not only does Emily Henry's new novel Great Big Beautiful Life drop on April 22, but every single one of the author's already-published rom-coms is being adapted for the screen. Okay, that's majorly impressive! People We Meet On Vacation, starring Emily Bader and Tom Blyth, will be coming to Netflix soon, and considering Beach Read was the second adaptation announced, it looks like Emily's first rom-com could be our next film. And fans have been spiraling about who could play January and Gus even before the Emily Henry movie was confirmed.

Well there are two actors at the top of the rumor mill for the Beach Read movie — and I am crossing all my fingers and toes we see them in the beloved roles.

When Paul Mescal and Ayo Edebiri started posting selfies together, fans immediately picked up on their chemistry — and started calling for the two actors to star in a rom-com together. "The Paul Mescal and Ayo Edebiri romcom is imminent," one X user tweeted.

And when Emily Henry reposted one of their selfies on her story? Fans of the author's first romance novel immediately fancast the two actors as Gus and January. And with their personalities, and the way they complement each other, there's literally no one else I could see playing these roles at the moment.

While Emily "can’t confirm or deny anything with casting for any movie," the author did admit that "they would be amazing. I actually saw them being discussed [online] for several different roles — and I definitely have a favorite. But it’s fun, because different adaptations would either have one of them playing to type, or one of those adaptations would have them both playing to type, and one of them would have them both playing against type. It’s an interesting thing. I mean, they’re great, they could do anything.”

Are Paul Mescal and Ayo Edebiri in a rom-com together?

Paul Mescal and Ayo Edebiri haven't officially joined a rom-com together, but after Paul told Awards Watch he wants to do a romance movie with Ayo in "the next five years," The Bear actress agreed she's game...on one condition.

"If somebody writes us a good script," she says. "It has to be in an About Time vibe. Something that’s got, like, a heart, so he can still flex his drama muscles where it’s like, the covert rom-com. Like, still a rom-com, but we got to get something inventive."

Is Beach Read going to be a movie?

Yes, the Beach Read movie is coming soon! Writer-director Yulin Kuang told Brit + Co exclusively that she "really cares" about giving fans of the book a good experience.

"I truly believe that art belongs to the audience once it's out in the world," she says. "And so saying too much, it feels prescriptive, you know? So I hope they enjoy it. I hope that they know that a lot of care is going into the adaptations. I remember what it's like to be watching with anxious hearts about the announcements of all my favorite adaptations. And so that's the main thing. I hope they know that I really, really care."

This edible crescent-roll cornucopia is our way of making a normal cheese boardmore festive — and definitely more fun — during the holiday season. Our go-to this time of year is a massive cheese plate that can stand alone and be the main attraction, or the starter for a larger meal. Press on for the surprisingly easy steps to braid a breaded cornucopia.

The easiest and most delicious Thanksgiving crescent roll cornucopia recipe.

Materials + Tools:

  • 1 roll of tin foil
  • 2 packages of crescent rolls
  • 1 egg (for egg wash before cornucopia goes into the oven), optional

Instructions:

Start by sculpting tin foil into the shape of a cornucopia (it looks like a cone with an upturned tail). Pro tip: Lightly pack tin foil so it's easier to remove later from your baked cornucopia. Crescent rolls should be buttery enough that this shouldn't be difficult.

Your tin foil mold should look a little something like this.

Pop open the crescent rolls and cut the triangles into strips. Pinch together the ends of strips to make strips longer.

Braid crescent roll strips. You can make these as fancy as you want. Not a braiding pro? Skip this step and leave those strips alone.

Wrap tin foil cornucopia with braids/strips. Make sure you cover all the tin foil. Leave a little wiggle room at the opening of the cornucopia, so that when you’re done baking you can pull some of that tin foil out.

Use any extra dough to cover the bottom of your cornucopia. Pinch the sides and anchor those braids/strips in.

Brush on egg wash before placing your cornucopia in the oven. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes. Take out of oven and cover spots of cornucopia that are already golden brown with extra tin foil. Bake for another 20 minutes at 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

Let it cool down until it’s easy to handle. Remove tin foil.

Place cornucopia in corner of your cheese plate. Arrange cheese on your serving tray.

Add crackers — we like to have two or three options.

Don’t forget to fill up your cornucopia. It's called "the horn of plenty" for a reason. Fill with fresh fruit like grapes, apples, and pears.

Add nuts like walnuts and pistachios to fill in any empty spaces. Garnish with fresh herbs like rosemary and sage to finish it off.
