The Skort Is Back — Here’s How to Make It for Summer!

It is time to step up your sewing game and your wardrobe for the summer season. Let’s do it with a DIY skort. Don’t be intimidated — this skort is actually quite simple to make. We suggest reading through the steps below a couple of times and even creating a tester skort with old fabric before you make the real deal. And if you’re worried that you don’t even know how to thread your sewing machine, we have an amazing Sewing 101 class that will take you through all the basics. Once you have mastered the art of the maxi skirt, head back here to take a stab at the summer skort!

Materials:

– 2 yards silky or jersey fabric

– 1 yard pom-pom trim

– elastic

Tools:

– sewing machine

– fabric scissors

– chalk

– pins

– measuring tape

Instructions:

1. Measure your body. First measure your waist, then the desired length of your skort, and finally the length of your inseam.

2. Now construct the shape of one side of the skort. It will look like a parallelogram with a backward J cut inside. Fold the fabric in half, mark the length of the shorts + 3 inches against the fold — this is measurement A. Multiply your waist measurement by 1/3 — this will be the measurement B. Measurement E will be your waist measurement multiplied by 1/2. Mark these lines.

3. Mark your inseam measurement perpendicular to the end of line B. Use this line to help create the letter J to connect the smaller top line to the longer bottom line. This will form the line of measurement C. Cut out two of these shapes.

4. Now you’ll need to cut out the wrap part of the skort. Line F should equal half of your waist measurement + a tail to tie. Line G should measure the desired length of your skort. From there, create curve H to connect these two lines. Cut out a small rectangle — this will be sewn into the other side so you can tie the flap closed.

5. Time to sew! Sew line C on both pieces of the skort. Open section D and pin together and sew.

6. Grab your scissors and cut line A. Pin G and the other half of the tail in between the two sides of the skort. Sew line A.

7. Cut elastic for your shorts. Measure it around your waist and subtract about 4 inches.

8. Fold down section B to create a 1-inch gap for the elastic. Sew almost all the way around but leave room to snake the elastic in. Once the elastic is in place, sew the ends together to create a loop and then close up the gap in the waist hem.

9. Pin and hem section E of the shorts. If you are working with jersey fabric you can skip this step.

10. Pin the pom-pom trim along section H and then sew. This part is tricky — take your time!

Grab your tape measure and start measuring. You are going to want to write these numbers down to reference throughout the tutorial. Let’s start constructing the shape! Fold the fabric in half, mark the length of the shorts measurement + 3 inches against the fold — this is measurement A. The +3 inches will be useful for the bottom and top hems. Multiply your waist measurement by 1/3— this will be measurement B (the top of the parallelogram) and measurement E will be your waist measurement multiplied by 1/2 (bottom of the parallelogram).

Mark the inseam measurement from the end of line B. Create a backwards J curve to connect the two lines.

Snip snip snip! Fabric scissors make everything easier.

Time to create the wrap! Line F should equal half of your waist measurement + a tail to tie. Line G should measure the desired length of your skort. From there, create curve H to connect these two lines. You also need to cut out a small rounded rectangular piece — this will be sewn into the other side of the skort so you can tie the flap closed.

Pin section C together and sew. Once sewn, the fold and seam should create a loop. Since you have two sides of the shorts, you should have two loops. Seems strange, but this is correct!

Now we are going to attach the sides of the skort together. Open section D, pin together, and sew. Remember to face the front sides of the fabric toward each other so you don’t sew your shorts inside out.

Your piece should be a strange U shape. Grab your scissors and cut down line A.

Open the skort. Section C should now be in the middle. Place your flap cut-out in between the front and back half of the skort. Line up the flap with the bottom edge of the short and the small rectangle with the top edge of the flap. Lay the front half of the skort back on top of the wrap flap and pin. Make sure you still have 3 free inches on top. This will be folded down for the waist band. You do not want your flap or your small rectangle to interfere with this seam.

Sew seam A on both sides.

Almost there! Fold down the section B to create a 1-inch pocket for the elastic. Pin in place and sew, but remember to leave a gap to snake the elastic through! Then fold in section E for a bottom hem — pin in place and sew.

When measuring with elastic, remember to give it room to stretch. You want the elastic to be 3-4 inches smaller than your waist measurement.

After the elastic is through, sew it together to create a loop. Then sew the gap in the waist hem closed.

Whimsical pom-poms are definitely the answer to this DIY summer skort. Pin it to line H and then sew. Take your time — this part was difficult.

All the steps definitely make this project look intimidating, but trust me, it is not! Read through them a couple times and even use scrap fabric to make a mini or full-size test version. You’ll fall into a rhythm and then will want to make summer skorts for all of your girlfriends!

Upgrade Your Thanksgiving With A Crescent-Roll Cornucopia

This edible crescent-roll cornucopia is our way of making a normal cheese boardmore festive — and definitely more fun — during the holiday season. Our go-to this time of year is a massive cheese plate that can stand alone and be the main attraction, or the starter for a larger meal. Press on for the surprisingly easy steps to braid a breaded cornucopia.

The easiest and most delicious Thanksgiving crescent roll cornucopia recipe.

Materials + Tools:

  • 1 roll of tin foil
  • 2 packages of crescent rolls
  • 1 egg (for egg wash before cornucopia goes into the oven), optional

Instructions:

Start by sculpting tin foil into the shape of a cornucopia (it looks like a cone with an upturned tail). Pro tip: Lightly pack tin foil so it's easier to remove later from your baked cornucopia. Crescent rolls should be buttery enough that this shouldn't be difficult.

Your tin foil mold should look a little something like this.

Pop open the crescent rolls and cut the triangles into strips. Pinch together the ends of strips to make strips longer.

Braid crescent roll strips. You can make these as fancy as you want. Not a braiding pro? Skip this step and leave those strips alone.

Wrap tin foil cornucopia with braids/strips. Make sure you cover all the tin foil. Leave a little wiggle room at the opening of the cornucopia, so that when you’re done baking you can pull some of that tin foil out.

Use any extra dough to cover the bottom of your cornucopia. Pinch the sides and anchor those braids/strips in.

Brush on egg wash before placing your cornucopia in the oven. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes. Take out of oven and cover spots of cornucopia that are already golden brown with extra tin foil. Bake for another 20 minutes at 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

Let it cool down until it’s easy to handle. Remove tin foil.

Place cornucopia in corner of your cheese plate. Arrange cheese on your serving tray.

Add crackers — we like to have two or three options.

Don’t forget to fill up your cornucopia. It's called "the horn of plenty" for a reason. Fill with fresh fruit like grapes, apples, and pears.

Add nuts like walnuts and pistachios to fill in any empty spaces. Garnish with fresh herbs like rosemary and sage to finish it off.

Squid Game season 2 will premiere December 26, 2024. I guess nothing says Christmas like murder and giant, terrifying dolls. Creator Dong-hyuk reportedly took 10 years to write the first season of the hit series, but we're glad it didn't take him that long this time around!

The first season of Squid Game followed contestants chosen to participate in the titular games, a competition that features deadly versions of childhood games. And this time around, Gi-hun is doing everything in his power to take the game down, even if it means "starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion," according to an official synopsis.

"As we all saw at the end of season 1, the main plot of season 2 will be revenge," actor Lee Jung Jae tells All K-Pop. "The key figure who controlled the workings of the games in season 1 was Lee Byung-Hun...it seems that the two of us will be the central figures of this next story."

While season 1 was all about surviving the games, it appears that Squid Game season 2 could be all about bringing them down.

The 'Freakier Friday' Writer Just Spilled On The Pink Slip Reunion

We're getting closer and closer to seeing a Freaky Friday2. The cat's out of the bag that the sequel treatment is confirmed and actually happening, and movie stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan have been increasingly vocal about the upcoming movie's plot. The dynamic duo, who you can see in 2024's Borderlands and Irish Wish, respectively, are expected to return as Tess and Anna, the mother and daughter that wake up one titular freaky Friday in swapped bodies.

Filming for Freakier Friday finally began on June 24, and we finally have an official release date for the film! Here's everything we know about Freaky Friday 2 so far.

Is the band Pink Slip going to be in Freaky Friday 2?

Anna's pop-rock teen band, Pink Slip, is undoubtedly integral to the plot of the original Freaky Friday, and thankfully, we'll see the band again in Freakier Friday! (Can we get some performances of “Take Me Away” and “Ultimate"?!). "Pink Slip is back together, the band. Yes!” Lindsay Lohan told Jimmy Fallon. “We just finished [filming] in August. It’s just been such a labor of love to make happen. And Jamie [Lee Curtis] and I, even at the table read, we were just smiling so big. I don’t think we were acting well, because we were so happy. But the movie’s funny, it’s really funny.”

"I may or may not have gotten to go to set and been around some pink slip energy," writer Jordan Weiss told me while promoting Sweethearts. "It may or may not have excited my inner child beyond belief because I was a super fan. I was 10 years old when the first movie came out. So 20 years later to get to work on the sequel as part of that team was a dream and, you know, don't meet your heroes unless your heroes are Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, In which case they're amazing. Meet your heroes."

Before the confirmation, a fewFreaky Friday crew members spilled on whether or not we'll actually see the angsty band in the sequel in an interview with Cosmopolitan.

Screenwriter Heather Hach clearly agreed that the soundtrack played a huge part in the movie's plot. "You take out the band element and I don’t think Freaky Friday would be as popular as it is," she said. "It didn’t feel like a derpy Disney movie. The music was actually really good."

Jaclyn Pearson, PHD, the drummer for the band Lash (who wrote the ever-iconic song "Take Me Away"), teased that Freaky Friday 2 might revisit their discography. "We contacted our record label because we heard there might be a sequel," she said. "We’ve got this whole back catalog. Maybe they could use another song for the film."

Producer Andrew Gunn seemed to suggest the same thing: "We got a draft of a script for the sequel right before the writers’ strike, and it was really good. A writer came up with the most brilliant idea. It uses music and the band in a great way."

Lindsay Lohan said on Andy Cohen's Sirius XM show that Freaky Friday 2 is really and truly happening! However, "I don’t want to say too much,” she said about the potential timeline.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the cast could be on set as early as summer 2024. In addition to Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis reprising their roles, Andrew Gunn and Kristin Burr will produce the movie, Elyse Hollander will write the script, and Ann Marie Sanderlin will executive produce. Nisha Ganatra will direct.

While Lindsay is looking forward to the story, she's “just excited to work with Jamie [Lee Curtis] again and see how much further we can take it," she tells PEOPLE. “We talk almost every other day in general, so I think we're going to have a lot of fun with this."

Lohan told the New York Times that she was ready and raring to tackle 2003’s Freaky Fridayback in the day after rocking a dual-role in 1998's The Parent Trap.

“I threw myself into everything: accents, green screens, playing two people,” said Lohan. “So I felt comfortable after that. Freaky Friday felt different because I was going through all of the phases of a 16-year-old [but playing a character who was a year younger]. This was the era of Avril Lavigne and punk, and I wanted to experience it. We did white stripes in my hair.”

The fame Lohan endured at a young age didn’t always leave a positive effect, and it’s been a hot second since we’ve seen her fully emerge back into the spotlight. The star’s been busy since – she moved to Dubai, manages her overseas businesses, got married, and recently welcomed motherhood. “Jamie and I are both open to that, so we’re leaving it in the hands that be,” Lohan told NYT. “We would only make something that people would absolutely adore.”

It sounds like Curtis is ready, too. "As I went around the world with Halloween Ends, people wanted to know if there was going to be another 'Freaky Friday.' Something really touched a chord. When I came back, I called my friends at Disney and said, 'It feels like there’s a movie to be made.'"
