How To Not Care What People Think About You

Admittedly, this headline is a bit of a misnomer: It's nearly impossible to never care what another person thinks. Reputation matters. It gets us hired for jobs, helps us find dates, and can even help us make new friends. That said, there is such a thing as caring too much about what other people think. How can you tell the difference? Ask yourself one question: Is your fear of other people's opinions stopping you from doing things you want to?

If the answer is yes, then you — like so many of us — could benefit from paying just a little less attention to the court of public opinion. This is not a switch that can be flipped but a process of reframing your thoughts. It can take time to see results and perfection is unlikely, but even just a bit of progress can make a world of difference. Below, find eight tips for how to not care what others think. Or, at least, care a little less.

Accept That People Will Have Opinions With You

It's inevitable: People form opinions — good, bad, neutral — about each of us. Even if you were to never go outside, people would judge that. So, oddly, the first step to not caring what other people think is accepting that they do, in fact, think of you. View these opinions as a passing breeze that can change direction at any moment because, really, that's all they are.

Journal About What Disapproval Actually Means To You

Disapproval is not exactly fun, but more often than not, someone's disapproval changes your life in no meaningful way. If you really sit and think about what this negative judgment amounts to, the answer is often "not a whole lot." Realizing this and really integrating it in your day-to-day life can help diminish its power over you.

Ask Yourself: What Actually Matters To Me?

This can be a journal prompt or question you mull over in your spare time (or both), but the goal is to come up with a list of things that are important to you. These are values, practices, or even people that make you feel sane, content, and hopeful about the future. It may be quality time with your partner, effecting change at work, or a good dose of alone time each week. What it probably won't be is what strangers or acquaintances think of you, but if it is, write it down and carefully consider why. Nothing is off limits.

Identify What Makes You Feel Judged

While it's true that people will judge us no matter what, we are also our toughest critics, and it's easy to see judgement where none was intended. And, really, what matters the most is how you feel when you feel judged. Keep a list, look for common threads, and ask yourself what beliefs, fears, and insecurities are behind it. Just try not to judge your answers: Approach them with curiosity, instead.

Make A List Of Things You're Proud Of

Whether it's achieving a milestone at work, overcoming a personal issue, or just something you really like about yourself, jot it down on your list. In fact, make it on-going activity — a list in the Notes app on your phone that you're frequently updating. While it could help to read it over it every now and then, just the fact that you keep it will force your brain to focus on the positive every now and then.

Focus On What Makes You Feel Good

This could be a person, a place, an activity — anything that leaves you more energized and inspired than before. Prioritize each one and make time for them in your life. When there's more of what you like in your life, you're less likely to focus on what you don't. Or, at the very least, there's less time to.

Distance Yourself From Whatever Makes You Feel Bad

Now, we're not advising you to bypass all things difficult or uncomfortable. But there are many things in life that simply aren't worth the headache. One of the best examples is social media: If you consistently feel irritated, left out, or somehow less than when seeing a person's posts, unfollow or mute them. If comments stress you out, disable them. If posting overwhelms you, take a social media break to see how that feels.

Offline relationships can certainly be trickier, but if there are any that feel more net negative than net positive, consider what needs to change. It might me mean addressing a sidelined issue head-on, hanging out a little less for a period of time, or — in the worst cases — ending the friendship or relationship.

Talk To A Therapist

If other people's opinions are taking up more brain space than you're comfortable with or your efforts to lessen their power over you feel in vain, consider finding a therapist to talk it out with. It might be that childhood trauma is contributing to your feelings, but even if not, therapists can be great sounding boards. They make diving into the topic of why we are the way we are less overwhelming and more productive.

I've been anxiously awaiting news on The Last of Us season 2 release date ever since that crazy season 1 finale in March of 2023. ICYMI, Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) have returned to Jackson but unfortunately, all's not well that ends well, because Joel is hiding a huge secret — and it's totally shaken Ellie's trust in him. I love this reluctant duo so much and I'm already making plans to visit my best friend so we can watch (and rewatch) the premiere together.

We've already gotten our first look at Kaitlyn Dever's Abby (a character fans of the game love to hate), but this is the first time we've gotten to hear her — or see her Firefly pendant. We also catch a glimpse of Ellie and Dina (Isabela Merced) dancing during what appears to be an iconic game scene and Tommy (Gabriel Luna) helping defend Jackson from the infected.

While season 1 was full of earthy tones and tons of light vs. dark imagery, The Last of Us season 2 is already showing off a much more aggressive color palette with blacks and reds that underscore just how explosive things are this season (and judging by the flares, I mean that quite literally).

When can I watch The Last of Us season 2?

Yes, The Last of Us season 2 release date is coming sooner rather than later and the show will hit Max in April 2025. We're still awaiting confirmation on whether we'll get all the episodes at once, but I'm guessing it'll be another weekly release schedule to bring us from the spring through the summer.

Yes, The Last of Us season 2 is on its way! The show was renewed in January of 2023 after the pilot aired. The game sequel opens five years after the events of the first game, and Joel and Ellie's relationship has splintered because of Joel's secret: his promise that Ellie's immunity couldn't be used for a cure is actually a lie — and he murdered an entire hospital of Firefly rebels to save her life.

When Ellie finds out Joel lied to her — and when a certain someone finds out Joel's responsible for the massacre — their worlds implode.

Bella Ramsey told Vanity Fair "it’s really a story about revenge and a continuation from the first season about the dangers of unconditional love."

Meanwhile, Pedro Pascal teased to Deadline that The Last of Us team “are always going to find ways to build on the incredible source material that they have, and surprise us with how they can use that material in a different format like a television show."

2024 was so tough that I almost thought I didn't accomplish any of my goals. I know some of us are worried about politics, reproductive health, inflation, and other troubling things. But, we're not going to help anyone, especially ourselves, if we're consistently frozen by worst-case scenario thoughts. IMO, Don't Overthink It should be read immediately after Amanda Montell's The Age of Magical Overthinking because it's another needed reminder to stop hurting our brains.

She shares essential tools to help us rewire our thoughts so we're not completely consumed by 'doom-thinking,' which I think a lot of us need. Her ultimate goal? Helping us enjoy the time we're alive.

2. The Worst Girl Gang Ever by Bex Gunn & Laura Buckingham

Speaking of reproductive health, this doesn't immediately seem like a self-improvement book — except it is. II don't know how many other women experienced a miscarriage this year, but I know I'm not the only one.

Though the title seems like a funny dig at something that doesn't feel hilarious, it's more than that. The Worst Girl Gang Ever does an amazing job of naming the confusing period that follows pregnancy loss and how lonely it can feel. It's not that other people haven't experienced it, but it operates like an 'invisible' pain.

Authors Bex Gunn and Laura Buckingham know that this is a gang no one would willingly sign up for, but they hold space for every emotion that surfaces. Most importantly, The Worst Girl Gang Ever is a reminder that this isn't something to feel ashamed about. That it's more common than people realize and it's possible to heal from.

Listen, I still believe in the beauty of it so I'm all for this being one of your goals in 2025. To help you get on the right track, I'm recommending Love Life: How to Raise Your Standards, Find Your Person, and Live Happily (No Matter What).
You're going to break up with your tendency to self-sabotage because you want to ruin things before the other person does. You're also going to learn how not to give too much to a person while leaving nothing for yourself. Sound familiar?

This books leaves nothing to your imagination because it's very straight forward. No matter how good of a person you think you are, there's probably a few habits you could stand to change. For some of us, our FOMO even though we keep RSVP'ing 'no' to events or parties is part of our problem. For others, it's knowing your social media account isn't going to grow just because you keep looking at it.

Sarah Knight wrote Get Your Sh*t Together as a way to help you clear some things out of your mind. You'll learn how to organize (not compartmentalize) things so you stop making self-depreciating jokes about your procrastination habits. She also has neat tips about reaching the money goals you've yet to accomplish...*sigh.*

Guess what? Self-improvement isn't just reserved for influencers on the internet who seem to know just what to say. Holly Matthews wants you to know you can work on yourself in order to shape your life the way you want.

I usually shy away from talking about politics, but I'm not interested in the social awkwardness and repeat of 2016. Democracy in Retrograde challenges us to confront our uncomfortable feelings about being bombarded with divisiveness and a general lack of distrust in just about everything.
Lawyer Emily Amick and Betches cofounder Sami Sage don't want us to crawl under our beds so we can hide from the world. Instead, they want to equip us with tools to form real communities that can help better this country. In order to do that, we have to start reading and educating ourselves instead of solely relying on the media to tell us how to feel.This sounds rich coming from a journalist, but I spent enough time with grandparents who were easily swayed by the news to know how it can affect people's rational and comprehension skills.
Self-improvement is amazing, but it doesn't always have to be about learning how to love yourself. Sometimes it involves learning more about the country you live in so you can be armed with knowledge when the powers that be try to make you feel like you're another uneducated citizen.

It Ends With Us might have premiered in August 2024, but Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni's behind the scenes conflict continues to unfold in the new year. What started out as rumored drama escalated into legal issues when Blake filed a lawsuit against Justin on December 20, claiming his behavior on set was “disturbing" and “unprofessional," adding "improvised gratuitous sexual content" after the actress had already signed onto the film — all in all facilitating a "hostile work environment."

Here's why Justin Baldoni's lawyer called the claims "outrageous" — and what Blake Lively's team had to say.


Blake Lively & Justin Baldoni's conflict is reportedly more than a "feud."

After Blake filed the suit, and the New York Times published messages between Justin Baldoni and his team, reporting they were behind a smear campaign against the actress, Justin responded with his own $250 million lawsuit against the NYT. Justin's lawyer Bryan Freedman told People the claims are "false, outrageous and intentionally salacious with an intent to publicly hurt."

But on January 6, Blake's legal team came back with another statement, holding firm that "this is not a ‘feud’ arising from ‘creative differences’ or a ‘he said/she said’ situation,” they said in a statement to People.

“As alleged in Ms. Lively’s complaint, and as we will prove in litigation, Wayfarer [Studios] and its associates engaged in unlawful, retaliatory astroturfing against Ms. Lively for simply trying to protect herself and others on a film set. And their response to the lawsuit has been to launch more attacks against Ms. Lively since her filing.”

“Sexual harassment and retaliation are illegal in every workplace and in every industry," the team wrote. “A classic tactic to distract from allegations of this type of misconduct is to ‘blame the victim’ by suggesting that they invited the conduct, brought it on themselves, misunderstood the intentions, or even lied. Another classic tactic is to reverse the victim and offender, and suggest that the offender is actually the victim. These concepts normalize and trivialize allegations of serious misconduct."

“Most importantly, media statements are not a defense to Ms. Lively’s legal claims," the statement continues. "We will continue to prosecute her claims in federal court, where the rule of law determines who prevails, not hyperbole and threats."

And their costars are speaking out.

Both Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni have found support from previous costars. Amber Tamblyn, America Ferrera, and Alexis Bledel, who starred with Blake in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, released a statement in which they "stand with her in solidarity as she fights back against the reported campaign waged to destroy her reputation."

"Throughout the filming of It Ends With Us, we saw her summon the courage to ask for a safe workplace for herself and colleagues on set, and we are appalled to read the evidence of a premeditated and vindictive effort that ensued to discredit her voice," the statement reads. "Most upsetting is the unabashed exploitation of domestic violence survivors' stories to silence a woman who asked for safety. The hypocrisy is astounding."

They continue that, "We are struck by the reality that even if a woman is as strong, celebrated, and resourced as our friend Blake, she can still face forceful retaliation for daring to ask for a safe work environment. We are inspired by our sister's courage to stand up for herself and others."

Brandon Sklenar, who stars in It Ends With Us as Atlas, also supported Blake, linking to the NYT story on Instagram with a heart emoji. "For the love of god read this," he said.

Meanwhile, Justin's Jane the Virgin costar Gina Rodriguez told People in September that "sweet, sweet soul" Justin is "my brother forever. Forever and ever."
