How to Quit Your Day Job & Start a Company for Breastfeeding Mamas

When you’re a new mom and getting the hang of breastfeeding, you’ll learn all sorts of new things: how to travel when you’re pumping milk for your babe, what to do when you’re leaking and how to handle all the people staring at you when you nurse in public. As we learned from the working artist mom of twins whose tandem breastfeeding pic went viral, you gotta do what you gotta do for your kids. In this week’s entry in the How to Quit Your Day Job series, we chat with Courtney Uyeshiro, the founder of the Milk It Kit — a set of back-to-work survival tools for breastfeeding mamas — about how she turned a working mom’s idea into a work-from-home company.

Before Courtney launched Milk It Kit, she worked full-time in financial sales for an investment management firm that handled cash for start-ups and venture-backed companies. Working with start-ups and hearing their pitches inspired her to think about striking out on her own. “I knew I wanted to do something more creative and fulfilling,” Courtney says, “and when the idea for the Milk It products popped into my head, it was hard to ignore.” When she and her family moved to Boulder, CO and her second child was born, Courtney decided to take the leap and move the Milk It Kit from an idea on a Post-it note to reality.

The Tips

1. Ideas are born from need. Courtney was always on the go in her sales exec role, heading to client meetings, conferences and events. As a breastfeeding mama, she found herself pumping everywhere — hotel bathrooms, her car, cafe bathrooms. “It was awkward, and I often wished I had a sign that I could put on the doors of these places to let people know what was happening and that it might take a while,” says Courtney. These experiences led her to brainstorm a better way to handle pumping on the go.

2. Survey your potential customers. Since Courtney’s company was aimed at breastfeeding moms, she spent time getting opinions from other working moms about how conservative (or not) they would like the breastfeeding signs and milk-bottle labels to be. “I surveyed hundreds of moms — friends, colleagues and friends of friends — that had experiences pumping at work. This feedback was crucial so the products did not just represent my interests, but those of a variety of hardworking pump-at-work moms,” explains Courtney. She developed the labels, wording, design and function of her products based on a combination of their feedback and what she thought would work best.

3. Focus on what’s already out there for ideas. Courtney worked with a graphic designer to develop the final look for the breast-milk labels and door signs while she researched the right materials for her Milk It Kits. Whenever she was out, she’d purposefully look at door signs and fonts, searching for what would work best for her product. Finally, she spotted what she wanted. “At REI, I saw the hanger on a pair of flip flops, and it caught my eye for the pumping-door sign. I loved that the thick cardboard was environmentally friendly, durable and classy-looking,” says Courtney.

4. Consider your product’s purpose. As a mom of three, Courtney knew the demands of pumping milk while traveling and working. The labels for breast milk needed to be waterproof, freezer-safe and able to be written on with a pen or marker. She also wanted the wording on her labels and door hangers to be office-friendly, while still making moms feel good about the time and effort involved in being attached to a breast pump. “I thought if moms had some positive tools with them, they may feel better and less alone about their decision to pump at work. Then the fun sayings started coming to me — ‘Not for Lattes,’ ‘Reserved for Baby,’ ‘Will Cry Over Spilled Milk.’ I also wanted to make the signs flexible for Mom’s comfort level, so many of the signs are double-sided, with one side that references milk/breastfeeding and one that does not,” says Courtney.

5. Get to know and inspire other #girlbosses. Running your own biz can be tough, so network with other women who are going through the same exact thing. Through trade shows and friends, Courtney connected with other mompreneurs. “It’s easy to feel alone when managing all the aspects of your own business, so networking in person and online can really help. It has also been a lot of fun to collaborate on giveaways with these companies to co-promote our brands,” says Courtney. Being a work-from-home mom has allowed Courtney to spend more time with her daughters, and it even got them into the entrepreneurial spirit. “They thought it was very cool when I received orders. In fact, it inspired my eight-year-old to create her own jewelry-design business. She and I sit side by side — me assembling Milk It Kits and her assembling make-your-own-necklace kits,” Courtney tells us.

6. Donate your less-than-perfect goods. Through the process of developing her product and finalizing the printing and materials, Courtney ended up with some breastfeeding labels and door hangers in designs she didn’t want to sell. Instead of tossing those products, Courtney donated several boxes of pumping door signs and labels to hospital lactation centers and public breastfeeding events. “It has been such a very positive experience,” Courtney says. “People are so pleased to receive donations.” Consider ways you can do good with your not-quite-market-ready extras.

7. Create a biz that fits your life. When you’re a working mom, there’s always a delicate balance between your job and your children. Part of what Courtney loves about the way she runs her company is that she can arrange her day around her three daughters’ schedules. When she first started Milk It Kit, Courtney went the route of hitting retail trade shows in the hopes of getting her kit into boutiques, but she soon realized that her product was much more geared toward online sales. Courtney shares, “Focusing solely on online sales has allowed me more time to work on promoting my business and more time with my three girls.” If you can, adapt your company to fit your lifestyle.

Major spoilers for the last two episodes of Only Murders in the Building season 4!!

Only Murders in the Building season 4 has finally unmasked its killer...and it's the one character I never suspected. After last week's reveal that Marshall was Sazz's stunt protégé, stole her script for theOnly Murders movie, and is behind her death as well as Glen's, the Only Murders in the Building season 4 finale opens with Marshall holding Mabel captive — and somehow it only gets crazier from there.

  • In the Only Murders season 4 finale, Charles and Oliver have to rescue Mabel from Marshall.
  • Marshall was Sazz's stunt protégé, then stole Sazz's script and passed it off as his own.
  • The Only Murders in the Building season 4 ending kills off a beloved character.

The 'Only Murders in the Building' Season 4 Ending, Explained

Patrick Harbron/Disney

After learning Marshall is the killer they've been looking for, Charles is determined to save Mabel, especially since he didn't get to save Sazz. Realizing Marshall has scaled the apartment building in the past, Charles and Oliver wind up on the building's ledge so they can get to her window. And just like the rest of the season, Martin Short absolutely steals the show. One of my favorite lines is, "Charles, you're my ride or die. And my strong preference is to ride." Icon!!

Our favorite comedy duo jumps into Mabel's apartment and starts to fend Marshall off with Eva Longoria's Lady Longoria-19 in 1 Multi-Tool, but it doesn't take long for him to gain the upper hand. Right when he's about to kill the trio, they're saved by Jan of all people, who shoots him in the back from the empty apartment across the courtyard...then reveals she's been hiding in Charles' apartment since we last saw her. (Feel free to take a deep breath to help process that information. I did.)

Patrick Harbron/Disney

With the threat taken care of, Mabel, Oliver, and Charles return to the Only Murders in the Building movie set — which Mabel says now has "mercifully low" cringe levels. Seeing Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria, and Zach Galifianakis in their element, and our podcast trio getting to honor Sazz's memory is such a well-earned moment for the season. We also get to see the first page of Sazz's script (which features her monologue from the beginning of the episode), on which she says, "When you take your hero on a journey, get him in all kinds of trouble, but land him home safely? Nothing better than that." It looks like our leads have finally landed safely!

The Only Murders in the Building ending features Oliver and Loretta finally getting married before she leaves to film in New Zealand, and Charles and Mabel joining Oliver at the altar. Loretta's walked down the aisle by her son Dickie and Oliver's son Will, which made me WEEPY. Considering Martin Short as Oliver is one of my favorite casting choices of the 21st Century, I am just so happy to see him happy.

Patrick Harbron/Disney

But, like all the seasons before, the finale takes a turn when Sofia Caccimelio tries to hire the trio to find her husband Nicky, a Caputo crime family member who episode 9 tells us is missing. They deny her request, but considering actress Téa Leoni just joined season 5, it looks like she won't be taking no for an answer.

And in the final moments of the Only Murders in the Building season 4 ending, Mabel, Charles, and Oliver finds Lester dead in the fountain! Lester is such a kind and comforting presence in every episode, I can't believe it! (How could you Hulu, HOW COULD YOU?!).

Who's the killer in season 4 of Only Murders in the Building?

Patrick Harbron/Disney

The Only Murders in the Building season 4 killer is Marshall P. Pope (whose real name is Rex Bailey), supposed screenwriter on the Only Murders movie. He reveals that his dreams of being a writer were always being squashed, and that Sazz was the first person who was ever kind to him.

But when Sazz shows him the only copy of her Only Murders movie, and he realizes just how good it is, he decides to take things into his own hands. He sends the script to Bev Melon at Paramount, and it ends up getting greenlit immediately (which explains why Charles, Oliver, and Mabel are contacted about the movie so abruptly).

When Sazz finds out, she confronts him and says she's going to tell Charles about the stolen script after his Broadway debut. Desperate and suffering a bit of a meltdown, Rex flies to New York and kills her, then puts her body in the incinerator.

Where can I watch Only Murders in the Building?

Patrick Harbron/Disney

All episodes of Only Murders in the Building season 4 are available to stream on Hulu!

Here's everything you need to know about Only Murders In The Building season 5!

Most new parents hear a plethora of well-intended, but somewhat annoying advice before their newborn arrives. At the top of the list rests comments that revolve around one thing — sleep training. It's not unusual for parents to hear, "Sleep when the baby sleeps," or "Don't let your baby sleep with you because they'll never leave your bed."

The latter is something I've routinely felt guilty about because my son is a stage five clinger who wants to live in my skin — especially at night. It wasn't until Kourtney Kardashian recently confessed that she believes in co-sleeping that I felt seen. Appearing on The Skinny Confidentialpodcast on September 16, she opened up about her oldest son's sleeping habits.

"I think every person’s different and every child is different. My oldest son [Mason Disick] slept with me till he was 7," she said without missing a beat. Eventually she revealed she'd started getting him used to the idea of sleeping in his own room until he told her he was "done" being with her at night.

Wanting to learn more about sleep training, I reached out to Physician Eric Levene, MD of Chester Pediatrics and Children's Sleep Consultant Rebecca Michi to explain what is, how it benefits children and parents, and why it's important for no one to feel pressured during the process. They both have decades of experience to help guide you towards a more peaceful bedtime.

What is sleep training?

Карина Суховерхая

Although you may have a basic idea of what sleep training is, it's normal to wonder if it's just another buzzy social media word. Dr. Levene says, "Sleep training is a process that helps babies learn to sleep without parental assistance," while Michi adds the words "independent sleeper" her definition. Michi says it's a means of equipping "kids the skills to fall asleep alone" and "get back to sleep when they naturally wake during the night."

But you're not a horrible parent if it were easier to co-sleep with your baby during their first weeks at home. For example, my son would cry and scream all night when we tried to get him to sleep in his bassinet — which isn't easy to maneuver when you're faced with sleep deprivation and a breastfeeding schedule. So, his dad and I thought it would be easier if everyone could fall asleep together.

Is there a correct time to start sleep training children?

Pavel Danilyuk

This answer may vary depending on who you ask. Family members might tell you not to spoil your baby from the time you give birth while parts of social media encourages co-sleeping. In Michi's opinion, she doesn't "think there is" a right time to introduce sleep training.

"Parents usually sleep train when they can no longer manage with the sleep they're getting. For some, that is when the baby is four months old; for others, it's when they're four years old," she explains. Dr. Levene also mentioned it can occur "between four and six months of age," but it "can take some time."

But, both issue a slight warning to parents who are on the fence about it. "There is no point in starting sleep training before you are ready, as you will likely give in and not follow through," says Michi, while Dr. Levene stresses the importance of being consistent.

It's almost like developing a routine for potty training. Kids pay attention to schedules and can sense when you're not 100% in!

Are there benefits to sleep training a child?

Sam K

Now that you know what sleep training is, you're likely asking yourself if there are any benefits to it. I don't consider myself a 'seasoned' mom yet, but I can tell you there are! Before we cover them, Dr. Levene wants you to know sleep training isn't about "teaching the child to sleep through the night." Instead, the goal is to start "improving infant sleep and in turn improving parental sleep."

So, which benefits will start to show once an infant or child gets used to being sleep trained? "A sleep-trained child can get to sleep at the beginning of the night without needing to be rocked, etc., and can get back to sleep during the night when nothing is wrong or they're not hungry," says Michi.

If you decide to sleep train your infant, don't expect a miracle to happen over night. Dr. Leven already mentioned being consistent, but he acknowledges how difficult sleep training can be. "It is not easy on the parent," he says. "There are different methods including cry it out, Ferber, and others."

Michi says, "The majority of sleep-trained children will sleep through the night, but some still need a feed until they are around a year old." One of the things my fiancé and I are working on with our son is getting him to verbally explain what's wrong when he wakes up upset.

It's still a disruption to sleep, but we've noticed our son's vocabulary has increased over time. He explains how he feels in greater detail which helps us know how to negate nightmares or come to his aid during nightly eczema flareups. He hardly ever asks to eat at night, so that's one thing we're grateful for!

Is there a right or wrong way to sleep train your child?

Ketut Subiyanto

If you're looking for a concrete answer, Michi doesn't believe there is one. "You can sleep train however you want! There are lots of different techniques, making most set-ups manageable." However, Dr. Levene says it "works best if the infant is in another room." At the same time, he doesn't feel it's "an absolute requirement."

This brings me back to what Kourtney Kardashian said about her sleep training approach with her kids. Instead of following different parenting paths, she chooses to "do what feels natural and instinctual," and Michi says there's nothing wrong with that. "Some families want to continue to bed share; some techniques work better for this. Others want to have their child sleep in their own room; they can use different techniques."

According to Michi, a key to sleep training is to be mindful about your "child's personality" because "temperament plays a big part in how children learn to be independent sleepers."

Who should parents talk to if they're struggling with their child's bedtime routine?

Tima Miroshnichenko

As much as you may resolve to help your child become more independent, there's no guarantee that you can snap your fingers and they'll be on board with your desires. Should you find that bedtime is a struggle that results in a lack of sleep for everyone, there are some things you can do. "First, chat with your pediatrician, they may be able to help. [Also] find some sources online that your resonate with," Michi suggests.

The one thing she doesn't recommend is relying on a certain age-old technique that I've even found doesn't work for my son. "Don't ask someone for sleep advice if they use cry-it-out sleep training techniques if you know it won't work for your child. You know your child better than anyone," she adamantly says. "You know what is likely to work and what isn't. Follow your instinct when it comes to sleep."

Frankly, my son started screaming at the top of his lungs when we tried to implement the 'cry-it-out' method, and since that reminds me of the early postpartum days, I can't get on board with it. For me, it's jarring to hear ear-piercing screams in the middle of the night, so going against tradition has proved to work better.

How can parents help their children get comfortable sleeping in their own beds?

Tatiana Syrikova

Major events can play a role in sleep regression, from your child meeting another milestone or moving to a new space. Want to know how you can start helping your child get comfortable in their own bed? Dr. Levene says, "Having a consistent bedtime routine is important. If its bath, bottle, book and bed or something like that, infants and toddlers feel comfortable with routine. Sometimes for toddler a security object is very helpful." He does warn, "Remember infants should having nothing in the crib/bed with them."

According to Michi, she believes "it all starts with playtime." She says, "Your child needs to be comfortable in their bed to sleep in it comfortably." But what does this mean?

It's simple! "During the day, have some playtime in the bed and bedroom. Start small for a few minutes and then increase as they become more comfortable," Michi explains. Your child will start making the connection that it's daytime so "they won't get confused thinking it's bedtime."

What should parents remember when sleep training their children?

Ketut Subiyanto

Though Michi is a sleep consultant, she's more than aware all children aren't created equally. They're going to have different personalities, wants, and needs that contribute to how you approach parenting them. "Not all techniques work for all children. Children are unique and learn in different ways. Find a technique that you can do and that you think your child can do. If you do that, you will always have success," she says.

Dr. Levene agrees that "There is no right way here. If it works in your home and you have reviewed the infant/toddlers sleeping with your pediatrician then its right for you" because "sleep training can be accomplished in many ways."

The more you bond with your child, the more their personality will show which is important when learning how to teach them something in a way they understand. My son loves learning new things, but he doesn't like to feel forced to perform them just like I don't. Of this Michi says, "Don't feel pressured into using techniques that don't resonate with you."

Remember, children are taking in a ton of information because the world and different concepts are new to them. It's easy for parents to forget because we've been alive for 20+ years longer than they have, but even we have trouble sticking to a bedtime routine because of sleep deprivation, FOMO, and being overachievers at work.

Like I always say, give yourself and your kiddos grace. Everyone's still learning what it means to be healthily independent!

After revealing her breast cancer diagnosis on Pod Meets World in August, Danielle Fishel continues to prove she won't let the disease hold her back. The actress and director took the red carpet for the Wizards Beyond Waverly Place premiere, and she opened up to PEOPLE magazine about how this disease continues to impact her. Here's what she had to say!

At the premiere, Danielle Fishel shared with PEOPLE that she was actually "back and forth" about showing up to the premiere. She said, "I obviously wanted to come tonight because I absolutely love this show. I'm so honored to have been able to direct a couple of episodes of it."

Still, there was something holding her back. She shared, "At the same time, everything I wanted to put on, I was like, 'I can see my scars in that. Oh, I can see my scars in that.'"

Instead of letting that hold her back, though, Danielle decided to push herself. "I was like, 'Why am I going to let that be a factor in deciding to live my life?'" she said. "I got dressed and I had my makeup artist do her magic and I feel fine." Ultimately, she said she was "happy" to be there — which is all you can ask for when you're facing down your fears!

Fishel told PEOPLE that her "whole life has changed" since her diagnosis. She explained that her life consists of "many doctor's appointments," check-ups, and side effects. She said, "It's not fun, but it is what it is. And with all that said, I'm very fortunate and I'm going to live, which is the most important thing."

Back in August, the star explained to Rider Strong and Will Friedle that was diagnosed with DCIS — ductal carcinoma in situ — which she described as "a rare form of breast cancer." Even though she discovered the disease at "technically stage zero," she underwent surgery to remove the cancer, as well as follow-up treatments.

When she announced her diagnosis, Danielle explained that she thought she would "would suffer in silence" and "not tell anyone." However, it's clear she's made the conscious effort to not only lean on her community, share her story, and brave the aftermath — surgery scars included.

Fishel's brave red carpet move comes after another fellow breast cancer survivor, Olivia Munn spoke out earlier in October about how her own scars. Munn bared her scars for a SKIMS campaign, after deciding she didn't wanna cover them up anymore. We're so proud of all these strong women for telling their stories and fully embracing themselves, scars and all!
