How to Quit Your Day Job and Start a Pencil Company

Bright accessories for your home office or work desk just make the day better. If you love outfitting your desk with stylish pens and pencils or celebrated National Pencil Day with your trusty number two (pencil), you might want to consider making your fave writing utensil for a living — really. In the newest profile in our How to Quit Your Day Job series, we chat with Jenna Finwall Ryan, the creator of the Etsy shop LZ Pencils, about her creative pencil biz.

The inspiration for LZ Pencils came from Jenna’s book club. Her book club pick was The Rum Diary by Hunter S. Thompson, and her friends were coming over. She wanted to find the perfect party favors, and scoured Etsy for pencils with quotes from the book. She couldn’t find any. So, she decided to get a pencil printing machine so she could make her own (obviously). That was just the beginning.

Jenna won an eBay auction for a vintage imprinting machine and spend the next year learning how to use it. Her pencil-making hobby was a fun creative outlet for the psychology PhD and aspiring screenwriter. “It was actually at the encouragement of my friends that I decided to open an Etsy shop almost a year later,” says Jenna. In June 2016, LZ Pencils celebrated its one-year anniversary. Along the way, Jenna’s pencils have been featured in Martha Stewart Weddings and BuzzFeed, and they’ve gotten Instagram shout-outs from Mindy Kaling and Ryan Seacrest too.

The Tips

1. Have a support squad. Initially, Jenna started making pencils to give as gifts to her friends. Now, her friends buy pencil sets from her. “My friends have been instrumental in helping spread the word about my pencils by sharing them on social media or gifting my pencils to their friends and family,” says Jenna. Other times, friends can be a source of inspiration for new ideas. “Sometimes a friend will suggest a theme and we’ll put our heads together to come up with a list of fun phrases that will work great on pencils.”

2. Reach out to tastemakers. Jenna’s big Mindy Kaling moment was a game changer for the small business owner. Jenna took a leap and reached out to her stylist, because Jenna has similar fashion taste to Mindy. “Fortunately, Mindy liked the picture of my pencils I posted on Twitter with quotes from her show, and I was able to forward pencils to her through her stylist,” says Jenna. When Mindy posted a pic of her custom The Mindy Project pencil set on Instagram, Jenna’s LZ Pencils’ Instagram feed was flooded with new followers, and special order requests poured into her shop.

In another savvy move, Jenna had the idea to print a set of pencils with Ryan Seacrest’s catchphrase, “Kieran, dim the lights,” before the series finale of American Idol. She intended to make the set solely for her shop’s Instagram, but suddenly remembered that she actually knew someone who worked on the show. In less than 24 hours, she had the idea, printed the pencils and got them in the hands of Ryan Seacrest (with MAJOR help from her friend). “This is probably the best example of the freedom I have with owning my own pencil imprinting machine and is one of my favorite parts of my business — making pencils for fun and on a complete and utter whim. When you’re your own boss, you can do silly stuff like this as part of your work day without the fear of getting fired,” says Jenna.

3. Give back. Since the start of LZ Pencils, Jenna wanted to find a way to donate pencils to support her love of teaching and writing. She now donates sets to the Los Angeles Youth Network. “They provide educational enrichment to at-risk adolescents. It’s inspiring that something as small as a pencil can help kids through tutoring, journaling or writing,” says Jenna.

4. Learn your trade. Before Jenna embarked on her Etsy adventure, she had never made one single pencil before. But the moment she bought her vintage imprinting machine, it sparked a creative fire in her to learn every aspect of the pencil-making process. “Pencil printing was a major learning curve, but I reveled in the fact that I could print modern phrases like ‘What Would Beyonce Do’ with a machine that was older than Queen Bey herself,” says Jenna. Jenna shares that joining Etsy was “pretty intuitive to use as a buyer and seller,” but that figuring out the packaging and finding the right vendors was tough and time-consuming.

5. Most importantly, have fun. What started out as a fun hobby turned into a profitable small business for the Los Angeles-based screenwriter. “Finding a hobby I enjoy and turning it into a successful small business has done so much for my self-esteem and keeps me connected to my screenwriting dream,” says Jenna. “After 2,000 orders, believe it or not, I still love making pencils.” She especially loves it when a fellow writer orders a pencil set, because it makes her feel a small connection between the writer and what they’ll create with her custom writing instruments.

6. Maintain quality control. When her shop was inundated post-Mindy, Jenna flirted with the idea of outsourcing her pencils. But she realized that, even though outsourcing would free up 75 percent of her workload, she wouldn’t be able to control the final product. It was more important to her that she could focus on the quality of her pencils than the quantity. She even passed on an opportunity to sell her pencils at a major television studio store because she didn’t want to outsource. “I’m a perfectionist almost to a fault, so I wasn’t willing to compromise quality in favor of quantity. That’s why all of my pencils are still handmade by me,” says Jenna.

7. Collaborate with other entrepreneurs. Part of the beauty of working for yourself is chatting with other small business owners and collaborating on mutually beneficial creative endeavors. Plus, Jenna says, “It’s a great way to meet other makers who understand the entrepreneur hustle.” She loves helping other small brands get the word out about their wares. “I’ve had so many people do the same for me, so I’m extremely passionate about paying that forward,” says Jenna.

Netflix has given us some bangers (hello Nobody Wants This!) but, according to TV viewers, it's also given us some epic flops. Whether the scripts fell flat or the actors had no chemistry, these are the worst TV shows on Netflix you can watch right now — with Rotten Tomatoes ratings of less than 40 percent! Listen, sometimes we all need a good hate watch while we're doing chores right? Is that just me? Anyway, let's get into it.

Here are the 8 worst Netflix shows you can stream in 2025.

1. The I-Land (2019)

Netflix

The I-Land has been compared to Lost, and it's a comparison that (somewhat) rings true. 10 people wake up on an island with one another...and without their memories. Unfortunately the 8 percent RT score proves this series missed the mark. "I-Land was terrible acting, just nothing redeemable," one Reddit user says. "They even green screened most of the beach scenes."

The I-Land stars Kate Bosworth, Ronald Peet, Michelle Veintimilla, Sibylla Deen, Gilles Geary, Kota Eberhardt, and Kyle Schmid.

2. Girlboss (2017)

Karen Ballard/Netflix

Sophia Amoruso might be rebellious and creative, but Netflix watchers aren't a fan of this TV show (and it has nothing to do with the fact we're in the post-girlboss era). "Some of the outfits were really cool but the main character was absolutely insufferable and had no redeeming qualities," one Reddit user points out.

The show, which follows Sophia's rise to business woman through selling vintage clothes online, has a 35 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Girlboss stars Britt Robertson, Ellie Reed, Alphonso McAuley, Johnny Simmons, and Dean Norris.

3. Another Life (2019)

Eike Schroter/Netflix

Another Life follows Niko, an astronaut on the hunt for AI. Except in this Netflix show, AI stands for alien intelligence. That means Niko and her crew are in for some serious alien danger, but unfortunately, according to the 6 percent RT score, that danger isn't enough to hook viewers.

Another Life stars Katee Sackhoff, Justin Chatwin, Samuel Anderson, Blu Hunt, A.J. Rivera, Jake Abel, Alex Ozerov, Alexander Eling, Jay R Tinaco, Lina Renna, Selma Blair, and Elizabeth Ludlow.

4. Sex/Life (2021)

Netflix

Viewers consider Sex/Life — which follows a love triangle between a woman, her husband, and a special someone from her past — to be one of the worst Netflix shows because "the acting and the writing was so, so, so bad," according to a Reddit user. "It was so corny and felt like fan fiction." And the 40 percent RT score agrees.

Sex/Life stars Sarah Shahi, Mike Vogel, Adam Demos, Margaret Odette, Cleo Anthony, and Darius Homayoun.

5. Echoes (2022)

Netflix

Leni and Gina are identical twins who have secretly swapped lives since childhood. But everything about their perfectly-curated double lives spirals when one sister goes missing. Sound gripping? The RT score of 22 percent says otherwise.

Echoes stars Michelle Monaghan, Matt Bomer, Daniel Sunjata, Ali Stroker, Karen Robinson, Rosanny Zayas, Michael O'Neill, Celia Weston, Gable Swanlund, and Jonathan Tucker.

6. Blockbuster (2023)

Ricardo Hubbs/Netflix

Blockbuster stars fan favorite actors like Melissa Fumero and Randall Park. But not even the incredible cast could save this Netflix show, which follows the last Blockbuster video store in the country, from a 23 percent RT score.

Blockbuster stars Randall Park, Melissa Fumero, Olga Merediz, Tyler Alvarez, and Madeleine Arthur.

7. Insatiable (2018)

Tina Rowden/Netflix

In Insatiable, a recently-thin Patty is out for revenge on anyone who ever fat-shamed her, and a beauty pageant sounds like a great place to start. The show has a 12 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and one Reddit user says they "can’t name one good thing about it." Yikes.

Insatiable stars Dallas Roberts, Debby Ryan, Christopher Gorham, Sarah Colonna, Erinn Westbrook, Kimmy Shields, Michael Provost, Irene Choi, Alyssa Milano, and Arden Myrin.

8. 13 Reasons Why (2017)

Beth Dubber/Netflix

This Netflix show might have been an iconic pop culture moment, but the 35 percent RT rating shows it's not necessarily an enjoyable one. The series follows Clay, who receives 13 voice tapes from a girl named Hannah after she takes her own life — and each tape details one reason she ended her life.

13 Reasons Why stars Dylan Minnette, Katherine Langford, Christian Navarro, Alisha Boe, Brandon Flynn, Justin Prentice, Miles Heizer, Ross Butler, Devin Druid, Amy Hargreaves, Derek Luke, Kate Walsh, Brian d'Arcy James, Grace Saif, Brenda Strong, Timothy Granaderos, Mark Pellegrino, Tyler Barnhardt, Jan Luis Castellanos, Deaken Bluman, and Gary Sinise.

There's nothing better than hitting the beach on a hot summer day before retreating to the air-conditioned comfort of a movie theater to catch Hollywood's latest releases. As we look forward to 2025's warmer months, they seem to be packed with some unforgettable productions, too.

Here are the most highly anticipated movies set to hit the big screen this summer. Don't forget to bring your best friends and popcorn!

Amy Sussman/Getty Images

This gripping horror-thriller, directed by David Midell, follows two priests, one of whom is wrestling with a crisis of faith while the other is battling a traumatic past. Together, they have to execute an exorcism on a possessed young woman.

Starring Al Pacino, Dan Stevens, Abigail Cowen, Ashley Greene, and Patricia Heaton, The Ritual is a summer movie horror fans won't want to miss.

2. How to Train Your Dragon (Live Action) – In Theaters June 13, 2025

Universal Pictures

The beloved animated saga that first debuted in 2010 is soaring to new heights in a live-action retelling of How to Train Your Dragon. Set on the isle of Berk, the film follows Hiccup, a clever young Viking who challenges generations of tradition by forming a bond with Toothless, a rare Night Fury dragon.

Then, when an ancient threat puts the peace between humans and dragons in danger, their friendship becomes the only hope for survival. This adaptation, which is rated PG, stars Mason Thames, Nico Parker, and Gerard Butler.

3. Materialists — In Theaters June 13, 2025

A24

Mark my words, Materialists is going to be the next great rom-com. The summer movie follows a matchmaker named Lucy who finds herself torn between a handsome (and wealthy) stranger and an ex she can't let go of.

That sounds amazing in and of itself but the fact the trio is played by Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans? Sign me up.

4. Bride Hard – In Theaters June 20, 2025

Sonia Recchia/Getty Images

Everyone knows that weddings can be chaotic, but no one ever expects a full-blown hostage situation. Bride Hard follows secret agent Sam, played by Rebel Wilson, as she takes on the role of Maid of Honor in her best friend's wedding.

But when a ruthless mercenary group crashes the nuptials and holds the guests hostage, Sam is forced to take action. Directed by Simon West, this movie also features Anna Chlumsky, Justin Hartley, Anna Camp, and Stephen Dorff.

5. F1 – In Theaters June 27, 2025

Warner Bros. Pictures

This sports drama, directed by Joseph Kosinski, will star Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a former F1 driver whose career was cut short by a devastating crash.

Now, decades later, Sonny is pulled back into the racing world by a struggling team owner who sees him as the key to turning their fortunes around. So, as he returns to the track, Sonny has to mentor a new generation.

6. Jurassic World: Rebirth – In Theaters July 2, 2025

Jasin Boland/Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment

Dinosaurs are back in Jurassic World: Rebirth, the latest chapter in the iconic franchise. Scarlett Johansson stars as Zora Bennett, the leader of a covert team sent to an abandoned island facility, once home to the original Jurassic Park. Their mission? Recover invaluable genetic material that could revolutionize modern medicine.

Yet, as the team delves deeper into the jungle, they uncover a hidden secret. Directed by Gareth Edwards, Jurassic World: Rebirth will also feature Jonathan Bailey, Luna Balise, and Mahershala Ali.

7. Superman — In Theaters July 11, 2025

Warner Bros. Pictures

The new Superman movie is a new look at the iconic hero, and it features a bunch of other DC heroes too. The cast is incredible, and David Corenswet as Clark will make you believe that anything is possible.

Superman stars Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Sara Sampaio, Pruitt Taylor Vince, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, and Neva Howell. Wow.

8. I Know What You Did Last Summer — In Theaters July 18, 2025

Matt Kennedy/Sony Pictures

This sequel tells the same story of five friends who cover up a death — and then have to pay the price. But this installment features a Gen Z twist that stars Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Madelyn Cline,Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King, and Chase Sui Wonders alongside Freddie Prinze Jr., Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Austin Nichols.

9. The Fantastic Four: First Steps — In Theaters July 25, 2025

Marvel Studios

Speaking of superhero movies, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is finally coming to theaters this July. The new movie will see Marvel's first family both tackle a global threat and parenthood.

Pedro Pascal is already amazing as Reed Richards, as is Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm. Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach round out the cast as Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm.

10. Happy Gilmore 2 – Streaming on Netflix July 25, 2025

Scott Yamano/Netflix

Nearly three decades after he first teed off, Happy Gilmore has returned. Adam Sandler will star in Happy Gilmore 2, the long-awaited sequel that reunites the original cast, including Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, Ben Stiller, and Dennis Dugan.

The exact plot remains unclear, but one thing is certain: viewers can look forward to plenty of laughs. Don't miss the sequel's Netflix debut on July 25!

11. Freakier Friday – In Theaters August 8, 2025

Glen Wilson/Disney

The original Freaky Friday came out in 2003, and now, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are reprising their iconic roles as Tess and Anna in Freakier Friday.

In the sequel, Anna is actually a mother herself who's navigating life with a daughter and soon-to-be stepdaughter. Then, when tensions reach a breaking point, the universe decides it's time for another perspective shift. Freakier Friday will also star Chad Michael Murray, Julia Butters, and Sophia Hammons.

12. Caught Stealing – In Theaters August 29, 2025

Joe Maher/Getty Images

Finally, Caught Stealing, directed by Darren Aronofsky, will transport audiences into the violent underbelly of New York City during the 1990s. It stars Austin Butler as Hank Thompson, a washed-up ex-baseball player whose quiet life is upended when he's dragged into crime.

Nothing sets your week up for success more than a productive Sunday. By taking a few hours out of your weekend to get everything ready for the workdays ahead, you can set yourself up for success in every area of your life. Trying toeat healthier? Working toward some career goals? Trying to reduce stress in your life? All of these goals can be more easily accomplished by laying the proper groundwork for each week as it starts. Here are a few of the habits you should try to cultivate on Sundays for a more productive workweek.

Photo by Ella Olsson on Unsplash

1. Meal prep. First and foremost, meal prepping makes eating healthy throughout the week significantly easier. This is especially true if you work full time. Meal prepping doesn’t have to be a multi-hour, day-long process either. Here are a few of our favorite tips and tricks for keeping it quick:

  • Meal-prep your breakfasts by creating ready-to-go smoothies. Slice up whatever fruit and veggies you like to use and place them, along with any other mix-ins, into a ziplock bag. Store in the freezer. Each morning, all you need to do is add the contents of the bag along with water or milk to your blender and hit go.
  • Batch-cook your proteins for the week by laying 5-6 servings of meat on a baking sheet. Cook in the oven and store in the fridge, and then reheat throughout the week.
  • Cook a huge batch of rice or quinoa as a base for convenient, ready-to-go healthy sides.
  • Pre-slice any veggies you use tend to use often so you don't have to slice them up as you cook throughout the week. Common combos include mirepoix (onion, carrot, celery), sofrito (onion, garlic, tomato, bell pepper), and the Cajun “holy trinity" (onion, bell pepper, celery).

2. Organize your planner. Whether you use a day planner or a bullet journal, take 30 minutes or so to get everything organized for the week. Write in any appointments, plans, or projects you have on the horizon, and section off as much time as you'll need to get everything done. You can also use your planner to make grocery lists, track habits you want to accomplish each day, and schedule relaxation time.

3. Set goals. While you're working in your planner, set some goals for the week. Make sure they are timely things you can actually accomplish before the following Sunday: When you set unattainable goals, you only stress yourself out. In your planner, break down concrete steps and actions to take to ensure you achieve those weekly goals.

4. Clean out your bag. Too many of us start the week with last weekend's receipts, wrappers, scraps, movie tickets, and god-knows-what-else in our bags. Give yourself an organized start to the week and stay ahead of the mess by cleaning out your purse.

5. Pick out your outfits. Take a glance at the weather forecast, and use it to inform what outfits you want to wear on each day of the week. Even if you're WFH these days, having outfits all picked out will keep you feeling both comfy and ready to crush the day each day. You can either fold each outfit and arrange them side by side, our plan the outfits in an app like Stylebook.

6. Call an accountability partner. Pick a person — be it your mom, your best friend, or your SO — who will be an uplifting force in your life and help you stay focused as the week goes on. Agree to check in on each other mid-week to see how each other is doing and help gently remind each other of the goals you both want to accomplish. This should be a person who can also lend a friendly ear if you need to vent about your passion project, your coworker, or your creative blocks.

The quiet luxury of European-inspired decor is having a moment, with relaxed linens, rustic plaster finishes, and earthy palettes leading the way. Jackie Kosnett and Martina Biegel, the design duo behind Galerie Design + Build, reimagined an outdated 1950s home in Mar Vista, Los Angeles, turning it into a stunning retreat inspired by their travels to Italy.

Originally a cramped two-bedroom with an awkward layout, the home included an unusual sunroom addition that felt more like a makeshift trailer.

Outdated wallpaper and years without a refresh left the home in need of a serious renovation. Also, those curtains!

1. Earthy Color Palette

Fresh off a trip to Italy, the principals infused the design with Mediterranean warmth, pairing clean contemporary lines with soft textures, rich materials, and an earthy, neutral palette. They repurposed the underutilized sunroom, relocating the kitchen there and turning it into a sleek, inviting space.

“We wanted to create a serene escape from the city through a neutral yet warm palette,” says Jackie.

Tessa Neustadt

In true Italian spirit, the kitchen serves as the heart of the home — designed with limestone, European white oak, plaster finishes, and unlacquered brass, anchoring the home's quiet luxury aesthetic.

The interiors were styled in collaboration with Neustadt-Studio, whose vision aligned perfectly with Jackie and Martina’s.

2. Vintage Decor

"From there we added vintage pieces from our own private collection, including a curved mohair sofa for a pop of color, Willy Guhl planters and a Pirman armchair by Heinz Julien," says Martina. I love the European inspiration and classic furniture design.

Tessa Neustadt

Blending old and new is a signature of Galerie Design + Build. Vintage lighting was thoughtfully layered in to bring character and a sense of history to the space.

3. Textured Materials

The pair could give a master class in layered neutral design. “Bringing in textured materials like leathered and tumbled natural stone, mixing different wood finishes, patterns in tile layouts or fabrics, and blending in vintage lighting and furniture will add depth while maintaining a neutral palette.” says Jackie.

Jordan Rodriguez

Limestone, European white oak, plaster finishes, and unlacquered brass continue throughout the home to add continuity.

Quiet luxury isn’t limited to neutrals — calming paint colors and vintage art can bring just as much serenity and sophistication.

4. Floral Accents

The floral bedspread has the charm of a classic Italian villa in summer — nostalgic in a beautiful way.

The result? A modern Italian-inspired sanctuary that balances simplicity and soul, right in the heart of Los Angeles.
