How to Get Back Into Exercising After a Break

Even the most committed fitness fans find that life sometimes gets in the way of athletic greatness. A change in location, circumstances, or your body can all force a break in the routine you worked so hard to lay out. And when you are ready, coming back to something you used to be able to do with ease can feel more emotionally daunting than the first time you tried it. Here’s how to get yourself mentally and physically back in the game.

1. Set reasonable expectations. Expecting yourself to instantly hit your previous level is a bad idea for your body and your morale. “Trying to go all-out your first session back in the gym is a recipe for injury and frustration, so avoid that temptation,” advises Greg Pignataro, a personal trainer with Grindset Fitness who specializes in strength and conditioning. “When trying to get back into the swing of things, start at a level that’s no more difficult than a four or five out of 10. Starting at this manageable level will help prevent you from feeling overwhelmed. Slowly and consistently ramp up the challenge over your next few weeks. Do this, and you’ll be back at your old level of performance — or beyond it — before you know it.”

Pignataro should know: He suffered what he calls “a freak soccer injury” that left him unable to play soccer or work out for six months. “I coped by focusing on what I could do pain-free, which was mainly hip mobility work, core strengthening, and glute strengthening,” he remembers. “I spent a few minutes performing those activities nearly every day for about seven months.” This hard work eventually helped him ultimately lift more than he did before the injury, and go back to playing soccer. “I fully understand people’s frustrations when life’s unexpected circumstances force them to stop working out for a while,” Pignataro adds. “But as I’ve seen firsthand, setbacks don’t mean you have to give up!”

2. Go slow. You don’t even have to do the same kind of exercise you were doing before, especially if it was high intensity. “Consistently doing anything physical and/or simply going to the gym can be a fantastic ‘restarting point,’” Pignataro encourages. “Once you’ve turned physical activity back into a habit, feel free to set more challenging goals. However, cut yourself a break at the beginning by aiming to make your goal completely controllable: Work out a certain number of times per week, regardless of what it is you do.”

For example, if you used to be a runner but got out of the habit, try walking first. “You don’t need to go all out, just break a sweat and maybe breathe a little hard,” advises Meghan Stevenson, a certified running coach with the Road Runners of America and founder of Your Best Run, an encouraging coaching website. “I would recommend doing 20 minutes to start. You can go outside to do this walking or run-walking — I suggest one-minute intervals of each — or you can go to the gym and do it on a machine. Be sure to stretch! After a week or two of that, you can start to extend the time or intensity, and even start lifting weights or doing bodyweight strength exercises.” It’s not how fast you’re going, it’s the fact that you are going.

3. Remember why you used to enjoy it. Let’s talk about the biggest off-putting thing about going back to exercise: You know how much it hurts! Memories of burning muscles, breathlessness, and soreness for days can be a major obstacle when it comes to forcing yourself back into the habit when you could just, well, not. “Most often that’s because running is hard more often than it feels good,” admits Stevenson. “But when running feels good, it feels REALLY good!” She and Pignataro point to these holdups as another excellent reason to be careful when setting yourself challenges in your new routines.

“One of the primary principles of training is ‘progressive overload,’” Pignataro explains. “This basically means that our bodies won’t change unless we challenge them, but the challenge must be gradual and manageable.” In other words, yes, exercise is supposed to be harder than not exercising — but it’s most effective when the goals you’re trying to achieve are manageable enough that you won’t be put off from even trying. If you go too hard too soon, you’ll likely drop out (or possibly re-injure yourself), whereas setting small goals will eventually lead you to something bigger. “Aiming to increase the amount of weight you can successfully lift for a given exercise by five pounds a week, for instance, may not seem like much, but over the course of months to a year, it makes an enormous difference,” Pignataro says.

4. Knowing you can quit and come back will make you healthier. A lot of athletes worry that taking a break means losing fitness they’ve built up, but sometimes having to stop is inevitable. Knowing that you can pause your routine and come back to it will ultimately make you a better athlete and a healthier person. Stevenson has personal experience here: In 2017 she had to drop out of the Big Sur marathon after a serious respiratory infection knocked her out for over two weeks of peak training. “I was upset to miss the race, but more upset that I essentially had to start over from scratch,” she says. “My speed and fitness came back within a couple of weeks, but I definitely had to relax my expectations and allow my body to heal.”

Reluctance to give your body the break it sometimes needs can be a sign that you need to reassess your true motivation for working out. “I think a lot of women are concerned that we’re going to instantly gain weight the moment we stop exercising or if we don’t work out super hard, and neither of those beliefs is true,” Stevenson assures us. “We need to be more attentive to our bodies and the messages they’re trying to tell us. A day, a week, or even a month off isn’t the end of the world. We can come back from all of that better than before, but we need to take a longer-term approach to our health. Slowly losing weight and slowly gaining fitness over time is the most sustainable way for us to be healthy and, ultimately, to be happy.”

5. Keep trying. We saved the best news for last: Regaining fitness is easier than finding it in the first place! “Our brains code the movement patterns necessary for success in activities [as we learn them] and store them for future use,” Pignataro explains. “It’s similar to how you don’t need to completely relearn how to ride a bike after months or years of not going anywhere near one. Your body will remember how to do all activities it had previously been capable of performing. It may take a few sessions to ‘shake the dust off,’ but it’s possible to return to a previous level of proficiency fairly rapidly.” It’s going to be slow at first, but with time, determination, and some achievable goals, you’ll be back on track — or even further ahead — than you were before your well-deserved break.

Grab your surfboard and your cutest 'kini because Outer Banks season 4 part 1 is finally here!! Like all you Pogues out there, I've been waiting for this show to return for more than a year — and I don't think I'll ever stop talking about it. We're back on the OBX, the Pogues vs. Kooks rivalry has returned, and we get plenty of adorable JJ and Kiara moments. Here's every thought I had watching the Outer Banks season 4 premiere.

1. I love Papa Heyward — but I can also see where Kie's parents are coming from.

I know Kiara's parents get a bad rep on the show, but I understand where their brains are at. To them, their teenage (unsupervised) daughter has gone totally off the rails and won't listen to anything they say. Not to mention she steals their car. Was sending her to Kitty Hawk the right move? No, but now that's she's 18, establishing some boundaries might be.

2. THE POGUES ARE FINALLY RICH!! (Um, why isn't JJ happy?)

Woogity woogity! After four years of treasure hunts and defying the odds, our ragtag group of surfers finally cashed in the gold for over a million US dollars. But while everyone is over the moon, JJ looks a little less pleased at the prospect of having almost as much money as Rafe and Topper. Kie reassures him the cash won't turn them into Kooks, but wouldn't he have thought of that before now?

3. Pope deserves so much hype — and a huge cut of the money TBH.

C'mon Pope, with the budget and the charter shop business plans. We love a forward thinker. He's the ultimate brains behind the operation here, and he absolutely does not get enough credit. He willingly carries so much of the financial responsibility and makes a ton of sacrifices (like never finishing school). Team Pope 4ever.

4. Buying JJ's house after John B.'s home burned to the ground makes me EMOTIONAL.

Outer Banks fans have come to know and love The Chateau — which is why Topper setting the house on fire in Outer Banks season 3 was devastating. I'm so glad they're able to establish a new home, and redeem JJ's house at the same time.

Rumor had it season 4 would focus on JJ, and it's already shaping up to be that way. I love him, your honor.

5. Once again, I need EVERYTHING the girls are wearing.

Outer Banks' costumes are always incredible, and I love every single look. Cleo looks better in a tank top or a jersey than literally anyone, and I need Sarah's pink top and overalls expeditiously. It feels like Kie's already had more hairstyles and accessories in this first episode than she's had in the previous three seasons combined, and I'm obsessed.

6. Wow, these kids are handy. Wouldn't they need, like, a contractor?

Don't get me wrong, I know some pretty handy young adults. But having six 18-year-olds build a dock and a bait, tackle, and charter shop from the ground up is some serious teen drama logic. Also watching them hang out on the dock makes me miss the coast!! (Although I do not miss the swamp).

7. JJ and Kiara are still the ultimate 'Outer Banks' couple.

JJ's hilarious happy dance, followed by Kiara telling JJ she loves him, might be my favorite moment from the opening episode. Although I couldn't help but notice JJ didn't say it back. Is this going to become a devastating "I should have told her" moment? I've been hurt by too many teen dramas in the past!!!

8. I'm very impressed by the attention to detail.

Watching Cleo make sandwiches already made me hungry, but I got even hungrier when I noticed she was using Duke's mayonnaise. This is the only correct mayo to eat if you live in the South, and I commend Netflix for this attention to detail.

9. Lightner actually terrifies me.

Okay, did anyone else heart start literally pounding when Lightner showed up, and opened a knife? Creepy men are simply not the vibe.

10. Does Rafe have a heart now?

Wow, totally didn't expect to see Rafe scattering Ward's ashes. This is actually so wild for Rafe's arc because all he wanted was to make his dad proud. Where does he go from here? I'm torn between wanting him to stay totally evil (because I find his villain arc so compelling), and getting the chance at redemption, but that's only because I love Drew Starkey so much. All I know is if anyone can get Rafe to change his ways, it's Sofia.

11. JJ should NOT have bet all the Pogues' money.

I've seen plenty of surf competitions on the real OBX, and we have an annual biker week, but I've never seen a beach bike race. There's a first time for everything, I guess! Not only is the JJ & John B. vs. Topper & Rafe dynamic always messy, but now we learn JJ bet the rest of the Pogues' savings on the race?! JJ I love you, but if I learned you took all my money, we'd have some serious problems.

12. RIP The Outer Banks Sentinel.

Let’s face it – having your period is not a fun time. Not only are you irritable, bloated, and ready to stuff your face with as much chocolate as possible in one sitting, but your skin also feels the effects. Personally, I know that Aunt Flow is coming to visit when I start to notice that my face is looking oilier than usual and I start to break out along my forehead, chin, and jawline. Whether you have dry, oily or combination skin, there are simple steps you can take to better care for your skin during your period. Here are all the best tips – along with some products I use – that I’ve picked up over the years.

Use A Gentle Cleanser

Since your skin is more sensitive during your period, it’s important to use a face wash that will help to get rid of grime without stripping your skin of its natural oils. If you’re looking for a gentle and affordable cleanser that does the job, I've used CeraVe’s Foaming Facial Cleanser for years. Not only does it contain multiple ceramides that help to restore your skin barrier, it also contains niacinamide – an ingredient known to help reduce excess oil production in the skin.

Hydration Is Key

Have you ever noticed your skin looking more dull or lifeless whenever your period comes around? This is because low estrogen levels during the menstruation part of your cycle makes your skin more prone to water loss, which causes dehydration and dryness. During this time, you can counteract this effect by incorporating a hydrating serum or moisturizer into your skincare routine. I recommend The Inkey List Hyaluronic Acid Serum. I would suggest using a serum with niacinamide as one of its main ingredients — like the Good Molecules Niacinamide Serum — because it is formulated with higher concentrations of this ingredient that can penetrate deep into the skin.

Use Spot Treatments Or Pimple Patches On Problem Areas

As tempting as it is to use your fingers or a comedone extractor to pop any zit that appears during your period, trust me when I tell you…don’t do it! Not only will picking further inflame your skin, you can also spread acne-causing bacteria across your skin that will make your breakouts even worse. If you’re an avid pimple-popper like myself, save yourself the trouble and cover your spots with hydrocolloid pimple patches to help them heal. My favorite patches are the Peace Out Acne Healing Dots; they're formulated with salicylic acid and aloe vera leaf extract, which help to reduce irritation and minimize breakouts.

If You Need To, Use An Exfoliating Peel Or Toner – But Don’t Overdo It

Even if you’re taking every step possible to take extra care of your skin during that time of the month, sometimes your skin can feel more gritty and grimy than usual. Exfoliating cleansers, scrubs and serums are often advertised for everyday use, but if you’re not careful, you can end up with angry and irritated skin.

If you absolutely have to exfoliate, play it safe by using a mask or a toner once or twice a week. For a mask, I recommend trying the Versed Doctor’s Visit Instant Resurfacing Mask, and for a toner, I suggest using the Peach Slices Acne Exfoliating Toner. Both products contain a combination of AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) and BHAs (beta hydroxy acids) that remove dead skin cells from the surface while also clearing and preventing breakouts.

Opt For A Lightweight Moisturizer

Hormone changes during your menstrual cycle can cause your skin to produce more oil than usual. While it's important to keep your skin hydrated and healthy by using a moisturizer, thick creams and facial oils can clog your pores and lead to an endless cycle of breakouts. Instead, try incorporating a light gel moisturizer without ingredients like silicones, which are known to congest your skin. My current favorite is the Selfless by Hyram Niacinamide and Maracujá Daily Barrier Support Moisturizer, which contains ingredients like maracujá seed oil and murumu seed butter that help to heal the skin barrier while leaving a silky smooth finish.

Don’t Forget Sunscreen

It doesn’t matter if it’s cloudy, cold, raining, or if the sky is falling — sunscreen is a non-negotiable in your skincare routine, especially during your period. Skin sensitivity is at an all-time high during that time of the month, meaning that you’re more likely to get burnt from UVA and UVB rays. Personally, I like to use lightweight sunscreens, like Krave Beauty’s Beet the Sun, that also contain ingredients to support your skin barrier. Beet the Sun not only has an SPF of 40, but it also has beetroot extract, an antioxidant known to have anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing properties.

Social media's "hot girls have stomach problems" trend might just be a trend, but I'll gladly accept it. After all, I feel like I deserve some kind of redemption after ending up in the ER, and then again in urgent care, because of stomach pain. I've had stomach problems my entire life, but there was no way I was giving up pasta. Or cheese. What kind of 20-something do you think I am?! I'd decided my comfort foods were worth the discomfort they caused — until it got so bad I couldn't handle it.

I was constantly uncomfortable or in pain (to the point I couldn't pay attention to anything or anyone else), and I couldn't go a day without feeling like my insides were on fire. Apparently, this is not normal.

Now, after consulting with my doctor, I've changed my entire diet. And I'm shook to my core at how good I feel. Is this what all of y'all have been experiencing this whole time?! I am in no way a medical professional, nor am I claiming that these food swaps (plus eating smaller meals more slowly) is the only thing that's helped me. What foods are gentle on your stomach?

Foods like toast, rice, bananas, eggs, applesauce, and oatmeal are known to be easy on your stomach. I had to do a lot of trial and error over the course of a few months, and have cut my diet back to safe foods I know will leave me feeling good.

I rarely drink alcohol (shout out to these delicious mocktail recipes!!!), and I have one coffee every six weeks or so, opting for a daily chai or matcha instead. Sugar's also proven to be a pain point, so I usually stick to dark chocolate. But the most surprising foods I've started to avoid are gluten and oats. All this to say, it's all about what works for you and your lifestyle.

My go-to healthy foods for stomach problems are sweet potatoes, broccoli, Greek yogurt, eggs, chicken sausage or grilled chicken, bell peppers, and rice. I also love the occasional ginger ale.

I will never go without sweet potatoes, like, ever again. I used to find them disgusting but they have become my saving grace on days my stomach feels awful. Whether I'm making fries, mixing them with other veggies, or turning them into vegan mac and cheese (yes, really), they're sooo versatile. One of my favorite recipes is roasting sweet potatoes and broccoli in the oven (I do 325 degrees for around 20 minutes), then adding in some cooked chicken sausage. I even add some ketchup and mustard on top for a deconstructed hot dog and fries!

This has been one of my go-to dishes recently, and I promise it's way easier to make than it sounds. I was inspired by this recipe from @itslivb, but since making it the first time, I've started eyeballing every measurement and adjusting the flavors. As someone who love pasta, this is one comfort food recipe that I can indulge in without feeling sick. All I do is boil cubed sweet potatoes until they're soft, then add them to a blender with nutritional yeast, salt, spices like garlic powder and onion powder, and cashews for a creamy consistency.

I have the same breakfast every day: an egg and turkey bacon, either a chai latte or a matcha latte, and Greek yogurt and strawberries.
