How to Grow Up and Stop Being a Picky Eater

If you’re still turning up your nose at steamed broccoli because it’s “too green,” it’s high time to take a hard look at addressing your picky eating. Often we grow out of our food aversions by the time we hit adulthood, in part because there’s more pressure as an adult to try new foods — think about the first time your friends insisted on that Ethiopian restaurant you now love, or your first time sipping an IPA. You might not have loved it at first, but in the end, peer pressure (for once) put you on the right path.

Obviously, there’s less motivation to try seasonal vegetables than a new beer, so you might still be in the “just pushing it around on your plate until someone takes it away” stage with leafy greens. But that means you’re missing out on yummy foods or vitamins, and your over-the-top pickiness may even be causing you major anxiety around mealtime (really serious picky eating is actually classified as a type of eating disorder). Here are five tips that’ll help you break your fussy eating ways.

1. Identify not just what foods you like, but what kinds of flavors, textures and qualities you like in a food or dish. Do you go for sweet or salty? Strong or delicate flavors? Crunchy or chewy? Creamy or chunky? (That last one might just apply to peanut butter.) Once you identify these things, you’ll have a pretty clear idea of the types of foods you’ll probs find delicious on a new menu.

2. Take a hard look at your picky preferences, and figure out what’s a true deal breaker in terms of taste. At the end of the day, no matter how hard you try, there are going to be some flavors you just don’t like. So list out what you know you should avoid, like ketchup or certain salad dressings if you’re not big on vinegary tastes and dark, leafy greens if you can’t stand anything too bitter. This list can include allergies and intolerances too. (But real ones — don’t insist you need to eat gluten-free unless you actually have to.) Anything not on this list isn’t make-a-scene-at-a-restaurant worthy.

3. Try a new produce item every time you go to the grocery store. If you’re thinking you need to embrace this whole fruits and veggies thing cold turkey (or what would it be when you’re doing the opposite of quitting something? “Hot turkey?”), think again. Instead of setting yourself up for failure (and letting a bunch of fresh food go to waste), pick ONE new thing you think you could handle every time you go shopping, and assign yourself to experiment with that for the week. 4. Try it a few times, a few different ways. It might take more than a few bites — or even a few meals — for you to start seeing the value of, say, carrots. And if raw vegetables just aren’t doing it for you, that’s totally fine. You can try roasting, stir-frying, steaming, boiling, dipping… basically, anything that makes getting those nutrients more palatable —short of covering them in chocolate.

5. Pick a food you do like, and find something similar. Love potatoes? Great! Try sweet potatoes, or butternut squash next. Is pizza your go-to dinner? Try a homemade pizza with a pita bread or cauliflower crust.

It's clear that celebrity breakups aren't slowing down anytime soon, and Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner's has been a heartbreaker for sure. Rumors about the couple's split began when TMZ reported that they were "heading" for divorce, and even though Joe posted a picture to his Instagram with his wedding band in full view on September 4, the couple later announced they're getting divorced. Here's everything we know about their relationship timeline from when they met to how they're both handling the post-divorce life.

From their red carpet debut to their engagement, the couple has chosen exactly what they wanted to announce — and what they want to keep private. "I’m in a relationship, but it’s a very private relationship," Sophie told The Sunday Times.

"I'm very protective of the life we've built...You never want to market yourself as a celebrity couple. It's not that cool," she tellsElle UK. "And my daughter never asked for any of this. I know what it can do to your mental health to be in this industry, and to be photographed every day and have the comments. "When we started dating, I realized that I didn't have a ton of stuff that was just for me," Joe told MR PORTER. "And in the end, it makes me a better person to have something for myself."

It's been a busy few years for both Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner. The Jonas Brothers released Happiness Begins in 2019, followed by this year's The Album, while Sophie starred in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, The Staircase, and Do Revenge. But unknown to the rest of the world, they were also getting ready for baby number two!

Sophie showed up to the May 2022 Met Gala cradling a baby bump, and then made her official pregnancy announcement in an Elle UK feature the next day. "The greatest thing in life is seeing my daughter go from strength to strength," she says in the interview. "We're so excited to be expanding the family. It's the best blessing ever."

September 2023 — Joe Jonas & Sophie Turner Announce Their Divorce

TODAY received an exclusive petition saying Joe Jonas has filed for divorce from Sophie Turner, and that their marriage is "irretrievably broken." He also states that the divorce is in the best interest of their daughters, and that the couple will "have shared parental responsibility" moving forward.

On September 6, the couple shared joint statements to their Instagram accounts. "After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage," the statements read. "There are many speculative narratives as to why, but truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children."

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner came to a new (temporary) agreement on where their kids would live after Sophie sued Joe for "wrongful retention" of their children in New York. According to new documentation, the two children will stay in New York, which both Joe and Sophie have consented to.

"After a productive and successful mediation, we have agreed that the children will spend time equally in loving homes in both the U.S. and the UK," Joe and Sophie said in a statement the week of October 11. Since the agreement legally lasts until January 7, the former couple will "jointly submit a status report letter" before December 23, according to the agreement.

On January 11, a new UK custody plan for Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner was approved, leading Sophie to drop last fall's wrongful retention claims on January 17 "with prejudice, and without attorneys’ fees, expenses, costs and/or disbursements awarded to either party."

September 2024 — Sophie Turner Gets Real About Motherhood Following Joe Jonas Divorce

Sophie Turner opened up about her role as the titular character in Joan, a new TV series, and shared how art is imitating life. "If I hadn’t been a mother, I don’t know if I would have been able to bring the same energy that I did into it," she said (via The Sunday Times). Though she mentioned it's not easy being a "single mother," some people took what she said out of context.

She wasn't talking about herself, but her character Joan's efforts to do the unseemly to have her child back in her life. Still, she clarified her comments via her Instagram stories so there's no confusion about her words. IMO, I don't think she needed to do that because being a mother is hard. Caring for children isn't just about candid Paparazzi or social media posts. When you're doing it by yourself or with a support village, it takes time, effort, consistency, repetition, and so much more!

Luckily she and Joe Jonas are able to have a situation where they're co-parenting so they can alternate between working and caring for them.

October 2024 — Sophie Turner Celebrates New Beau's Birthday...

There have been PLENTY of rumors about Sophie Turner and Peregrine Pearson lately, but she's been understandably tight-lipped about it all. It seems like she's ready to be more forward about her new boyfriend, though! On October 27, 2024, Sophie posted a birthday celebration for Peregrine on Instagram. On October 30, 2024, Sophie opened up to Harpers Bazaar about her divorce from Joe Jonas. “I’m going through a legal process right now where I can’t really say much, but it was incredibly sad," she said. "We had a beautiful relationship, and it was hard.”

Even though she described the relationship as "beautiful," she also explained that she felt like her life was "on pause" when she wasn't in England. She explained, "I just never really feel like myself when I’m not in London, with my friends and family. Even if you weren’t exactly in line for the Olympic gymnastics team as a kid (another reason Simone Biles is so impressive, honestly), chances are, you look back on those days as ones of your peak flexibility. Like running, remembering things, and making new friends, bending gradually gets harder as you age. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to keep your flex! Here’s why you lose your bendiness — and how to get it back.


Why Your Flexibility Stalls

As though going through puberty weren’t enough of a struggle, it’s also the time when you start to lose your natural flexibility. “No one is more flexible in their life than they are as a child,” says Dr. Leython Williams, a doctor of physical therapy at Athletico Physical Therapy. “However, during puberty, children often become temporarily less flexible. Some children have slow growth spurts, while others grow very quickly. This temporary decrease in muscle length/flexibility is a result of their bones growing faster than their muscles and tendons can stretch.”

Note that Dr. Williams refers to this particular loss of flexibility as temporary — meaning we can’t blame puberty for the fact our toes seem to be getting farther away every time we try to touch them.

“There is no specific age when we wake up and our flexibility has ‘officially declined.’ However, it is a fact that as we age our flexibility decreases, which leads to decreased functional ability and mobility,” he explains. “As our bodies get older, we lose a small amount of flexibility as a result of the normal aging processes. There is loss of water in our tissues and intervertebral discs, increased stiffness in our joints, and a loss of elasticity in muscles and tendons. In our 20s and 30s, it is important that we develop a consistent static and dynamic stretching regimen to establish and maintain flexibility and range of motion more easily into our older years.”

That’s right: What you do now matters later. And this isn’t just about keeping up in yoga, Dr. Williams cautions. “It becomes imperative that we stretch regularly to decrease our likelihood of various injuries.” Jill Belland, co-founder of Barre Belle, agrees. “It’s easy to feel invincible if you’re young and injury free! Flexibility will reduce your risk of injury: What doesn’t bend will break. Increased range of motion, balance, and mobility are all linked to flexibility and contribute to overall strength and fitness.”

How to Get It Back

When you’re a kid, flexibility comes naturally; when you’re an adult, you have to take responsibility for improving and maintaining it. “Peak flexibility age for adults can differ person to person and depends largely on their physical activity habits,” says Dr. Rachelle Reed, PhD, Pure Barre’s manager of training development and barre kinesiologist. “Notably, flexibility can be improved at any age when flexibility training is incorporated into a regular exercise routine. It’s important for adults to be strategic about including flexibility training into their workouts, because maintaining flexibility and physical function as we move into middle and older adulthood is associated with better quality of life and independent living.”

There’s no one flexibility standard everyone has to meet, Belland reassures: “There is no golden rule for what perfect flexibility is person to person, but there are simple markers such as touching your toes from a forward fold for hamstrings/lower back, or reaching for your hands behind your back, with one hand behind the head and the other behind the waist, for shoulder mobility. You don’t need to be a contortionist; moving around with fluidity in your everyday life and having good range of motion in your favorite activities without feeling pain or tension is a better way to gauge your own personal goals.”

But where do you start if you want to improve your flexibility? Dr. Reed explains, “There are two main types of flexibility training that you should aim to incorporate into your routine: Dynamic stretching, where a stretch is performed by moving through a challenging but attainable range of motion several times in a row, and static stretching, where a stretch is held in a challenging but attainable position for a longer period of time (at least 10-30 seconds).”

How do you know how far to go? “Our muscles have a natural stretch reflex that prevents us from going too far into a stretch, which can also cause injury,” Belland tells us. “Aim to gently stretch through this reflex. The key to increasing flexibility is about time under tension: It takes around 20 seconds to ease through the stretch reflex. Reintroduce the stretch and hold it for 10 seconds longer, working up to one minute. The second time you introduce a stretch, the stretch reflex will diminish, allowing your body to get deeper into your stretch and also building better muscle memory.”

If you’re still worried about injuring yourself — especially if you’ve been injured in the past — Dr. Williams recommends seeing a physical therapist for guided stretches. Belland reminds us that you don’t have to go to the gym or spend hours on stretching. “Stretch a little bit every day when you can fit it in after a workout or in front of the TV. If you just don’t think you’ll stretch on your own, getting to a yoga or a barre class is helpful if you need the accountability of a dedicated time and space.”

Speaking of the gym, just as your phys ed teacher told you, stretching is especially important before and after a workout. “Far too often active individuals begin their workouts without a dynamic stretch,” Dr. Williams says. “Dynamic stretching increases one’s range of movement and blood flow to soft tissues prior to physical exertion and/or sport performance. This type of stretching is vital in improving performance and reducing the risk for injury.”

But you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit — in fact, stretching is an important antidote to all that sitting those of us with desk-based jobs tend to do. “Sitting at your desk all day can lead to decreased flexibility in hip flexors and hamstrings by keeping them in a shortened position for a prolonged period of time,” Dr. Williams warns. “Consider a standing desk or work station or taking several breaks throughout your work day to stand up and stretch.”

Instead of looking back on your kid-level flexibility as a long-ago dream, mix in a little bit of stretching into your new daily routine — especially if you work at a desk! Almost a year after her exit from the Scream franchise, Melissa Barrera is opening up about what the experience has taught her. In a conversation about her new movie Your Monster (in theaters now), Melissa exclusively told Brit + Co she feels like a whole different person than she was last year.

The end of the year brings plenty of reflection, whether you're someone who thrives on journal prompts or you prefer to yap over a bottle of wine with your best friend. But a viral Sundance interview from January, in which Melissa Barrera says the experience with Spyglass started helping her "finally figure out who I'm supposed to be," proves she's been reflecting all year long.

"Everybody's kind of like thinking of like, 'What does the future hold? Like, how do we make it better?' And I have been thinking that for a year," she says. "There's people that have actually been on this journey for way longer, and it's them that we should be thanking for our world not being like over with right now, you know? They're the ones that continue to make changes for the better and to fight for better things for all of us."

After Melissa Barrera's exit from Scream, news broke that Jenna Ortega wouldn't return for the seventh installment. Melissa called Jenna a "good egg" in a January interview with Rolling Stone, and gave Brit + Co some insight into that viral video of the onscreen sisters laughing during Scream 6 press.

I can totally understand falling for a costar. One scene gazing into each other's eyes, and (as the kids say), I'd be asking, "What are we?" Zendaya & Tom Holland and Ashley Park & Paul Forman both met on the sets of their most famous projects (Spider-Man and Emily in Paris, in case you were wondering), and this year's biggest movie event also features a brand new celebrity couple: Ariana Grande & Ethan Slater.

After Ariana and Ethan were both cast in Jon M. Chu's Wicked, the movie began filming in early December. Ariana Grande was cast as Glinda, while Ethan Slater got the role of Boq, one of Glinda's Shiz University classmates.

Ariana and Ethan reportedly could get enough of each other at Michelle Yeoh's Oscars party. A source told The Daily Mail later that summer that "They were seen making out at a pub in Hampstead, and they were all over each other at Michelle Yeoh's Oscar party."

July 2023 — Ariana Grande & Ethan Slater Split From Their Partners And Start Dating

News of Ariana's split from her then-husband Dalton Gomez broke on July 17, while TMZ also reported Ethan filed for divorce from his wife at the time, Lilly Jay, on July 26. (Ariana and Dalton ended up filing for divorce in September).

After People reported Ariana and Ethan were now in a relationship of their own, Lilly told Page Six that “[Ariana’s] the story, really. Not a girl’s girl. My family is just collateral damage.” However, other sources claim Lilly and Ethan had been separated for a couple months before his relationship with Ariana started.

August 2, 2023 — Ethan Slater & Ariana Grande Are Moving Fast

Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater reportedly fell head over heels so quickly, their friends were telling them to pump the breaks. “Ariana’s been told it’s too soon to go public with him and to take things slower,” said an Us Weekly insider at the time. “She’s very aware of how she’s perceived by her fans, and she’s trying to be mature. [But] if it were up to her, she’d be seen with him tomorrow.”

Sources told People at the beginning of September that the costars and couple are trying to figure out how to balance their relationship with their celebrity.

“While this entire situation has been blown out of proportion, it’s much different than what has been portrayed in public,” a friend of the couple says. “They are just trying to navigate their new relationship in private."

Another reemphasizes that Ariana and Ethan only started dating after they were separated from their spouses, while a third adds, “They are doing their best to balance the fact that they are in the public eye with the desire to be respectful to all parties involved.”

September 2023 — Ethan Slater & Ariana Grande Go To Disney World

Surrounded by their friends and family, the Wicked movie stars headed for a day at the happiest place on earth. "They went with a big group of friends as well her mom and brother," a source told People. The source also said they're "really happy and really good for each other. All of her friends love him."

To celebrate the holidays, Ariana and Ethan headed out to a nice Italian dinner, reportedly with Ari's dad Ed Butera. "They love to support each other in their work," a source told People. "When she’s done with work, Ariana loves going to the theater when she can."

Considering she's a musical girlie, and has been on Broadway herself, I totally believe Ariana heads to the theatre whenever she gets a chance!

December 28, 2023 — Ariana Grande Says She Feels "Deeply Misunderstood"

“I’ve never felt more at the mercy of and in acceptance of what life was screaming to teach me,” Ariana Grande said in an Instagram story. “I have never felt more pride or joy or love while simultaneously feeling so deeply misunderstood by people who don’t know me, who piece whispers together and make what they want out of me and their assumptions of my life.”

A source also told People that the popstar is “serious with Ethan. She loves being with him."

January 12, 2024 — Ariana Grande Releases "Yes, And?"

In a line heard 'round the world, Ariana Grande's "Yes, And?" (the lead single from her Eternal Sunshine album) begs the question, "Why do you care so much whose d—k I ride?" The song doesn't mention Ethan by name, but there's a lot of room to infer.Although, when the album releases in March, Ariana also talks about a new "interaction" on “Intro (End of the World)," and wonders "if he’s judgin’ me like I am right now."

September 30, 2024 — Ariana Grande Defends Ethan Slater

In a Vanity Fair cover story, Ariana opened up about the reaction to her relationship with Ethan Slater, revealing that “the most disappointing part was to see so many people believe the worst version of [the story]."

“There couldn’t be a less accurate depiction of a human being than the one that the tabloids spread about him,” she says. “No one on this earth tries harder or spreads themselves thinner to be there for the people that he loves and cares about. October 30, 2024 — Ethan Slater Finally Speaks Out About His Relationship With Ariana Grande

Almost two years after meeting Ariana Grande, Ethan Slater finally opened up about their relationship in a new interview with GQ. “Obviously, it was a really super big year and I think there was something that was really difficult about things in your private life being commented on and looked at by the public," he says. "There were a lot of big changes in private lives that were really happening, so it’s really hard to see people who don’t know anything about what’s happening commenting on it and speculating, and then getting things wrong about the people you love. So just to address that part of it, that feels really hard."

But the clouds also came with silver linings. “Of course, it was an amazing year and a really beautiful thing, and I’m just really excited," he continues. "I’m just really, really proud of Ari and the work she’s done on this. She’s poured herself into it. I’m really proud that I got to be there for that part of it, and I’m really excited to be there for this next step of it when the world gets to see the amazing thing that she did.”
