How to Support a Loved One When They Come Out As LGBTQ+

About this time two years ago, one of my closest friends came out to me as transgender. When she told me, I didn’t know much about what being transgender meant. I had never learned about gender or sexuality at school, and no one close to me had ever come out to me before. I wanted to make sure my house was a safe place for her as her family struggled to adjust to her new gender identity, and I made sure my family knew my friend’s new gender pronouns — “her” and “she.” I used her new name every time I talked about her so that my family got used to it, and did extensive research on gender and sexuality. As I learned, I realized how much my friend inspired me. Little did I know that my new understanding would come in handy much closer to home.

About six months after my friend came out, my best friend and youngest sibling, Van, came out as pansexual and non-binary at the age of 13. “Pansexual” is a sexual orientation that’s not limited to biological sex, gender, or gender identity. It’s kind of like bisexuality, but goes beyond “men” and “women.” Non-binary is a category for gender identities that are not exclusively masculine or feminine. Since Van doesn’t really feel male or female, Van’s pronouns are “them” and “they.”

Being Van’s older sister changed the way I view the world, and seeing the obstacles they are faced with has made me want to help change the way other people view sexuality and gender. I’ve become a more compassionate, understanding, and knowledgeable friend, and I give Van a lot of the credit for the advice I’m about to give. It was during one of our heart-to-heart conversations that we realized that there’s a need for people close to LGBTQ+ people to understand how they can support those they love.

Looking back, there are a lot of other things I wish I had said to my friend and to Van when they opened up to me. But in the time since, here’s what I’ve learned:

1. Don’t make it about you. When someone comes out to you, it may or may not come as a surprise. If it doesn’t come as a surprise, don’t say things like, “I knew it!” or otherwise make the conversation about yourself. Right now it’s important to listen and support this person, so let them have the floor and finish what they have to say.

If the news comes as a surprise to you or conflicts with your religious beliefs, keep that to yourself for now. There will be time for you to process the information later, and you can both discuss and share beliefs when you are ready. Through my meaningful and open-minded discussions with Van, I have found that sharing beliefs with your loved one can allow you both to expand your horizons and grow closer together. But with that in mind, don’t forget to be respectful of your loved one’s privacy. Don’t disclose any information that your loved one asks you to keep to yourself. And most importantly, DON’T push them to come out to other people; it is up to them to decide when they are ready, not you.

2. Don’t make it a big deal. After someone comes out to you, thank that person for telling you and trusting you. Know that coming out is a difficult thing to do and that it takes a lot of courage. Keep in mind that this person needs your support now more than they likely have before.

Coming out is scary, especially if an LGBTQ+ individual lives in a LGBTQ+ -unfriendly environment (and especially in our current climate). While it is good to acknowledge what a big step it is to come out, try not to be dramatic about it. Let your loved one set the tone of the conversation, and DON’T question their sexuality or gender. Questioning if someone is really LGBTQ+ or not will only hurt that person. Remember that when someone comes out, it’s likely they’ve thought about sharing this information for years — probably most of their life.

Like Van, who was just a young teen when they came out, most LGBTQ+ individuals have gone through difficult struggles with their identity and done endless amounts of research in an attempt to understand themselves. Realize that gender and sexuality are experienced differently by everyone, and that that’s okay. Some people experience gender and sexuality as fluid, while for others the experience is more fixed and definite.

Also consider that sometimes LGBTQ+ individuals will have tried to fit themselves into heterosexual/binary roles in the past in an attempt to fit in (or for their very safety), and it may seem confusing to have to alter your thinking afterwards. Some people may still seem to fit into these roles after coming out; remember that some people experience gender and sexuality fluidly, and that that those experiences can change throughout time. Either way, respect your loved one’s identity, sexuality, and gender, and don’t make the mistake of thinking that you know more about them than they do themselves.

3. See them for who they are, but don’t change how you treat them. Coming out does not change who a person is. Sexual orientation and gender do not really define anyone; rather, those things are only a part of who a person is. The only real difference between before and after coming out is that afterwards, an individual is more free to be themselves and accepted for who they really are. Remember this, and don’t change the way you act toward this person.

Since Van came out, we have grown closer than we ever were before. We still have our old inside jokes (and even some new ones), and of course, Van still reads fan fiction 24/7, loves anime, and sleeps in a room with walls covered in art. Van has the same loving personality that they have always had and we have the best time snuggling, laughing, and being silly when we are together.

Also, keep in mind that you might not always get it right. Using the correct names and gender pronouns is SO important, but it’s totally normal to say the wrong name or pronoun when you’re just getting used to your loved one’s newly public identity. Mistakes mean you are trying; DON’T make your person feel uncomfortable by overly apologizing. Acknowledge the mistake and move on!

4. Be there. If an LGBTQ+ individual lives in an unsupportive community or environment, it is likely that they’ve received negative comments or messages that made them feel badly about themselves — and, likely, afraid for their safety. Make sure you always stand up for the people you care about, and try to de-escalate any stressful situations. Try to reach out to them when you can, and remind them that you are there always for anything they might need.

Van knows that I’m only a phone call or text away, and that I am always here to listen and support with their best interest in mind. I encourage Van to do the things they love, and make sure I am at every big event in their life, cheering them on. My partner and I spend a lot of time with Van, and have even started going to rallies and walks in support of LGBTQ+ organizations.

Respect your loved one’s needs. On their bad days, Van sometimes doesn’t feel like talking. On these days we sit and cuddle, both on our phones or watching a show together. We don’t always have to talk, and on bad days it can help just to have someone close.

5.If you don’t know, ask! You might have some questions about your loved one’s sexuality or gender, and that’s okay. It is important to always communicate with the people you care about, and this includes asking questions you might have. But be careful not to bombard your loved one with questions, and definitely don’t single them out by making them your “go-to person” for LGBTQ+-related information, unless that person has said they’re okay with it. Google exists for a reason!

6. Check in often. It is common for LGBTQ+ folks to experience bullying, discrimination, and prejudice, and mental health conditions like anxiety and depression are an unfortunately common result. Frequently check in with your loved one about how they are feeling, and listen to them when they need you to. Show them that what they think and feel matters to you, and if they don’t feel comfortable talking you about certain things, offer to help them find a good LGBTQ+ therapist that they can talk to.

Some transgender individuals choose to undergo hormone replacement therapy or to change their names on legal documents. You can offer to help them research these processes. Taking on tasks like this can be hugely helpful, but only when your help is wanted — don’t be overbearing.

Since we live apart, I text Van at least once a day to see how they are doing. When Van is having a bad day I might only get a short reply — if I get one at all. This used to make me anxious, but I have since learned that it isn’t personal. All it means is that Van doesn’t have the energy to talk in that moment. Respect your loved one’s needs, and follow their cues.

7. It is never too late. If you regret your reaction to someone coming out, it’s NEVER too late to apologize and try to start again. You are only human; don’t beat yourself up for not getting things right the first time. No matter what, the most important thing is to do your best to show this person that you care. The rest will come with time.

Romance reality TV is probably one of the best sectors of the entertainment universe, at least if you ask us. We love our Bachelor nation binge watches and live for our daily Love Island recaps. Watching people fall in love is so, so cute…and more often than not these relationships spill out of our screens and into the real world, where we’re able to keep up with all of our favorite reality stars à la social media. Such is the case for Gabby Windey — former Bachelor contestant and half of The Bachelorette’s starring Season 19 duo — who *just* came out as queer and revealed that she’s been dating comedian and writer Robby Hoffman for three months. Please excuse us while we squeal in excitement for her!

www.youtube.com

Former 'Bachelorette' Gabby Windey Reveals She's Dating A Woman | The View

On Wednesday, Gabby appeared on The View to share a mysterious update about her dating life. “I have been seeing someone for a couple months,” she said. “And I’ve been keeping it a little private because it is a bigger story and a bigger conversation. Because I’m dating a girl.” She continued, explaining to the speechless (and rather stiff) hosts that her queerness “was always a whisper in me that just got louder and louder” and she “had to navigate through the shame” she’d internalized before coming out. “I don’t want to live and not be living my full truth,” she commented.

Following her announcement, Gabby shared a series of pictures to Instagram with her big news, featuring her girlfriend Robby. “Told you I’m a girls girl!!” she humorously captioned the post. She went on to share an adorable video of her running up to Robby and kissing her post-The View, and it’s safe to say we’re ecstatic for her.

Image via Instagram

Robby also shared her own pictures of Gabby to Instagram, tagging her in the comments.

Gabby was a finalist on Clayton Echard’s season of The Bachelor in 2022. She proceeded to co-star in her own season of The Bachelorette alongside Rachel Recchia, getting engaged to Erich Schwer last May after meeting him on her season. Gabby and Erich called off their engagement last November, and she seems to have started seeing Robby a few months later.

We should note that Gabby isn’t the first Bachelor Nation contestant to come out as queer, either. Becca Tilley, who was casted in Seasons 19 and 20 of The Bachelor has been dating pop singer Hayley Kiyoko for five years, sharing her sexuality with the world in 2022. Colton Underwood, another lead in the franchise, also came out as gay in 2021, not to the surprise of comedian and actor Billy Eichner (IYKYK).

The Bachelor franchise has historically been solely focused on heterosexual relationships, only deviating from the norm in Australia. In 2021, The BacheloretteAustralia lead Brooke Blurton became the first openly bisexual lead in the franchise, hosting both men and women in the Bachelor Mansion.

TBH, we’d love to see more representation in The Bachelor franchise. Love is love — and we want to see it all on our screens!

If I'm completely honest, there are very few celebrity couples I care about the way I care about Tom Holland and Zendaya. Aside from the fact this couple is like a walking friends-to-lovers plotline IRL, and are both power houses on their own, these two actors and philanthropists are just unstoppable together. They also keep their relationship pretty private. Here's the latest news on it.

In an interview with GQ, Tom Holland opened up about his relationship with Zendaya and how their relationship to fame has impacted everything. “It was quite strange and weird and confusing and invasive,” Zendaya agrees. “I think loving someone is a sacred thing and a special thing and something that you want to deal with and go through and experience and enjoy amongst the two people that love each other."

“Our relationship is something that we are incredibly protective of and we want to keep as sacred as possible," Tom later told The Hollywood Reporter. "We don’t think that we owe it to anyone, it’s our thing, and it has nothing to do with our careers.”

April 9, 2024 — Zendaya Raves About Tom Holland

In her Vogue cover story for May 2024, Zendaya talks a lot about how fame has affected both her life and Tom Holland's. “His [career] changed overnight. One day you’re a kid and you’re at the pub with your friends, and then the next day you’re Spider-Man,” she says. “I definitely watched his life kind of change in front of him. But he handled it really beautifully.”

That star power was evident in 2022, when Tom Holland and Zendaya spent the afternoon at the Louvre in Paris...and almost broke the internet. “You just kind of get used to the fact that, 'Oh, I’m also one of these art pieces you’re going to take a picture of. I just gotta be totally cool with it and just live my life,'" Zendaya continues. (She also says that when the museum let them walk around after-hours, "it was like Night at the Museum.”)

In this video captured at the premiere, you can see Tom and Z share a hug and a kiss on the cheek during the evening. Even the smallest gesture can mean a lot during a busy night, and I love how in sync Tom Holland and Zendaya are!

The latest viral clip about Tom Holland and Zendaya also has to do with Challengers. During another Challengers press tour stop, Zendaya's overjoyed to be presented with a bouquet of gardenias. “These are my favorite flowers!” she exclaims. When asked if Tom Holland buys her flowers, she points at the camera and jokes, “I hope he's watching!”

“Zendaya hates beer, like, absolutely hates beer," he continues. And when she helped with the taste testing, a joke helped guide the overall brand. "She does not drink beer at all, and the first round of testing she was like, ‘Wow, these are really tasty’, and I was like, ‘Well, that's probably not a good sign.'"

And at the launch event for Bero in New York City, Tom and Zendaya wore matching shades of burgundy! Z stunned in a floor-length leather dress while Tom paired a short sleeve sweater with black trousers.

October 15, 2024 — Zendaya Reveals Why She'd Never Take A Dance Class With Tom Holland

While speaking to Teen Vogue for her partnership with On, Zendaya reveals she'd probably avoid dance classes with Tom Holland because "he's too good, it would piss me off," she jokes. "I would want to take someone who could be equally as bad as me."

"Kayaking, I would choose Tom because I think that, if I can remember correctly, with the kayak, you have to be in sync with the person," she continues. "And I think it would be hilarious because we are both very controlling and we both want to be in charge. So it would be funny to watch us be like, no, we're going to go this way. No, we're going to go that way. And I think it would be a good story after the fact."

Pride *should* be a year-long celebration, whether you're part of the LGBTQIA+ community or not. Empowering everyone to be comfortable in their identities forms a more understanding and joyful world for us, so bringing advocacy past the month of June is pretty important.

With companies launching pride-focused collections during June each year, it can be hard to know which ones are *actually* supporting the proper causes, and living up to their pride missions. These 10 pride collections are totally committed to the community.

Coolhaus.

Take pride in your identity, allyship, or general love for sweets with Coolhaus.

This pride season, the LGBTQIA+-founded ice cream company is launching a limited-edition 'Love Out Loud' ice cream sammie, and in celebration, is donating $25,000 towards GLAAD's mission of accelerating acceptance for the LGBTQIA+ community.

Baggu x House Wine

Image via House Wine

Bag brand, Baggu, and canned wine creators, House Wine, released a collaborative Pride Pack for this year's pride season.

House Wine has proudly supported the Human Rights Campaign throughout their tenure as a business, and continue to do so with this pack built with a reusable bag, House Wine Rainbow Cans, and assorted stickers.

For every Pride Pack purchased, House Wine will donate $2 to HRC, further advocating for their mission of equality for the LGBTQIA+ community.

The North Face

Image via TheNorthFace.com

The North Face is embracing finding connection in nature for the queer community, and their extensive pride collection features colorful shirts, shorts, hoodies, tanks, shoes, and more outdoorsy accessories.

"Each one of us is a reflection of the glittery, messy, beautiful diversity that is Mother Earth," their site reads. "This pride, we celebrate the transformational power of finding our runway in the outdoors together."

What's even better about their collection is it isn't relegated to June only. The North Face supports queer-serving organizations like Brave Trails and YouthSeen year-round.

Bombas

Image via Bombas

Each sock and underwear purchase from Bombas' pride collection gives back to organizations supporting people facing homelessness, *especially* those part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

According to True Colors United, young queer people are 120% more likely to experience homelessness than their non-LGBTQIA+ peers – and 40% of homeless youth belong to the community.

Bombas is reaching their fifth year in partnership with the Ruth Ellis Center in Detroit, which offers homeless, LGBTQIA+ young people a safe, accepting space – and this year's "Let Everyone Know" pride sock and underwear collection was designed in collaboration with the center to give back.

Noodles & Company

Image via Noodles & Company

Beloved noodle chain, Noodles & Company, is bringing back the ultra-tasty Pride Crispy – a rainbow-laden, fan-favorite rice crispy treat that satisfies sweet cravings, but *also* gives back to the LGBTQIA+ community.

For the third year in a row, Noodles & Co. is pledging 100% of proceeds from Pride Crispy sales (up to $30K) to Out & Equal, who advocates exclusively for LGBTQIA+ workplace equality.

The Crispy will be available to pair with your favorite noodle bowl through the month of June!

This post has been updated.

Move over expensive MAC haul — I've discovered the best drugstore lipstick that rivals my $20+ purchases. I love finding dupes for my beauty lovers who can't continuously drop a huge amount of money on new products that eventually expire. Since I'm 100% against using old makeup, I'd rather chat your eat off about the affordable drugstore finds I'm using consistently these days.

IMO, the best drugstore lipstick is the Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink Lipstick! Coming from one of the OG beauty brands, it's formula was surprising because I almost expected it to fail. It sounds silly, but trying drugstore brands used to be a hit or miss before social media started demanding that all makeup products stop being subpar.

Since this lipstick passed the test, here's everything you need to know about it — including why I l keep buying it and all the other best drugstore lipsticks I love!

What is Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink used for?

Jasmine Williams

Anyone can say that their lipstick is THE BEST, but that's not always true. So, what's the tea on the Super Stay Matte Ink formula? According to the brand's notes on Amazon, here's what you can expect to this lipstick to do:

  • Glide on easily because of the "unique arrow application"
  • Provide a "perfectly matte" finish
  • Remain "smudge-free" for up to "16 hours"

It sounds like a lot of fluff if you've never tried the formula before, so I scrolled through the comment section to see what other customers think.

What are other customers saying about it?

Maybelline

Most of the customer reviews I read through on Amazon are extremely thorough so here are the ones that stood out the most:

  • "I am really hooked on this lipstick! It's very long wearing and it's super gentle on my lips...Let me address some common complaints among other reviewers and why I think they're wrong...Oil takes this stuff off quite easily, so do some makeup wipes...Secondly, I do agree that this product is very sticky. I have found that I can put my Mac lipgloss on over top and now it's not sticky anymore!"
  • "I’ve purchased this longevity wand type lipstick a few times and I like the texture and staying power. Sometimes I put another glossy lipstick over if it seems drying however it stays very nicely for the day."
  • "This is my first time purchasing this brand. When I say it last all day, it doesn't come off until you take it off! Some might see this as bothersome, but having it stay on until I need it off is the greatest thing."
  • My Favorite Review: "I put it on at around 3:30 pm and fell asleep with it on cause it was a busy night, it was still on the next morning. I had to use multiple makeup remover wipes and wash my face with a good makeup remover to get it off."

My Review For Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink Lipstick

Jasmine Williams

I used to be terrified of wearing 'nude' lip colors because I thought they would be too much of a contrast against my complexion, but watching a few YouTube tutorials nipped my fear in the bud. I make the 'Seductress' shade work for me by lining my lips with a dark brown liner. Once I did that, I immediately fell for the way it looks on me. It's to the point where I actually can't stop wearing lip combo — it's so easy to apply and takes less than two minutes to set!

How long does Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink Lipstick last?

Before I started applying gloss over my nude lip combo, I wanted to test two very important things:

  1. If this matte lipstick could pass the smudge-proof test. I've tried other brands, and they haven't always stayed in place — especially when eating or drinking something — so I was skeptical.
  2. How long it actually lasts, smudge-proof or not. I mean, who among us hasn't gotten home after an evening out to find their lipstick basically nonexistent?

Like one of the customer reviews suggests, this lipstick has come off a little while eating things like pasta or pizza, so it's not 100% "smudge-free." Given that, I only had to reapply this lipstick once throughout an 8-hour day — which isn't a huge deal to me because it takes less than 30 seconds to reapply it. The best way I get it to stay put is by applying lip gloss and a teeny amount of setting spray over it.

Target

Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink Lipstick

Lately, I've even been adding the Maybelline Lifter Gloss in the shade 'Stone' as a way to truly lock in the color. It highlights the 'Seductress' shade of the Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink Lipstick which is a huge plus for me.

For less than $12, I think it's absolutely worth buying multiple times!

More Best Drugstore Lipsticks

Target

The Lip Bar Vegan Matte Liquid Lipstick

When I'm in the mood for a universal red lipstick that has the best color payoff, I always turn to The Lip Bar's 'Bawse Lady.' She's a gorgeous blue-red that highlights all undertones without making anyone looked washed out.

Target

Revlon Colorstay Limitless Matte Lipstick

I discovered Revlon's Colorstay formula while browsing for a deeper lipstick for fall and it does not disappoint! It's another vegan product that has triple hyaluronic acid and upcycled cranberry extract in it so it literally feels like you're not wearing anything on your lips!

Target

Milani Color Fetish Matte Lipstick

The word 'Fetish' may be off-putting, but don't write this lipstick off because of the name — ha! I typically wear this when I don't want to wait for a liquid lipstick to dry. It's super velvety and also contains hyaluronic acid in it to help keep lips moisturized.

Target

Nyx Professional Makeup Smooth Whip Matte Lip Cream

Last but not least, Nyx has never let me down in the lip department before. If I'm truly shopping on a budget, I'll reach for the Smooth Whip Matte Lip Cream because it glides on my lips like butter. That's not to say I know what it feels like to rub butter all over my lips, but you get what I mean! It's soft and has a gorgeous color payoff that makes me feel like it's comparable to the best lipstick I swear by.
