6 Tips to Help You Enjoy a Vacation Without Feeling Guilty

A lot goes into planning the perfect vacation. You need the right luggage. You have to rally your travel buddies. You need to figure out the perfect balance between active excursions and well-deserved downtime. You have to push through that overpacked to-do list at the office so you’re not stressed about coming back to work afterwards swamped. Perhaps most importantly, though, you need to squelch all of your guilty feelings about going on vacation in the first place.

That’s right; even though you’re excited about your travel plans, you’re probably also worried about how it might look to others that you’re taking time away from work and family. We’ve rounded up six expert suggestions to help you set aside those sneaky feelings so they don’t sabotage your vacay. You’ll travel a lot lighter when you can leave your guilt at home and thoroughly enjoy your trip.

1. Change your mindset. Massachusetts-based licensed psychotherapist Lisa Hutchison notes the importance of mindset when going on vacation. “Instead of feeling like you are taking [time] away from your family [and work], think of your time away as an opportunity to replenish your energy,” she says. “You give more from a full cup.” You’ll be a better employee, boss, friend, partner, mother, fill-in-the-blank when you prioritize that time for yourself.

2. Realize that vacation can help with stress management. When you remove yourself from the typical routine and put up that OOO auto-responder for your email, you do more than just forget all of the triggers that are causing you stress — you learn to actually deal with that stress! “Stepping away from the office allows us the mental space to consider how we tend to handle stress and to work on improving those skills,” Dr. Steven Stein, a clinical psychologist in Toronto, tells us. “Your boss will notice a positive change in your overall job performance when you return.”

3. Focus on what you’ll be doing instead of what you’ll be missing. “It’s not your responsibility to shape your life around everything you’re expected to do,” Minnesota-based coach Rebekah Buege advises. “Shape your life around things that bring you joy and happiness.” Put the family and work commitments out of your mind — at least for the time being — and get excited about all the fun experiences waiting for you on your travels! Being fully present with what you’re doing there will allow you to get more enjoyment from work and family when you get back.

4. Judge whether you’ve “earned” the vacation based on your own standards. It’s easy to question whether or not you’re deserving of a vacation… but that’s only because you’re probably worried about whether or not other people think you’re deserving of a vacation. “Ask yourself if you’ve earned it by your own definition — no one else’s,” Maple Holistics health and wellness expert Caleb Backe says. “If you can honestly say that you have earned the vacation time, then it shouldn’t matter what anyone says or thinks.” But if you can’t shake those guilty feels, it might be because you’re feeling — by your own standards — that you need to put in a little more hard work before you get that downtime.

5. Disconnect from (or at least limit) work emails. If the mere idea of taking time away from the office wracks you with guilt, imagine how much worse you’re going to feel when you can actually monitor the comings and goings of your inbox while you’re on vacation. Assuming you’ve covered all of your bases before you took off (e.g., returned all pressing emails, informed the key players of your impending absence, and designated other people on your team to take care of urgent issues that might come up), you need to let yourself unplug if you want to keep the stress minimal. “If you’re one to worry about what’s going on at the office, I recommend silencing your email notifications so your top assignment is having a once-in-a-lifetime trip,” Topdeck Travel trip leader Sarah Jasmine Labib says. “You can always check when you have some downtime if you are still expected to chime in, but set a couple times per day to do this and stick to that schedule so it doesn’t take over your vacation.”

6. Use your vacation as an opportunity to learn something new. If you’re really struggling to let go of work guilt, think about how you can use your time on the road for some professional growth. Labib credits travel for her communication skills, ability to work with many kinds of people, independence, and general cultural awareness. If you’d rather learn something a little more concrete to take back to your boss, consider reading a professional development book or stocking up on trade magazines for the flight.

There's nothing more tasty than a fresh slice of buttered sourdough in the morning. But new research suggests you might want to pass on this delicacy to extend your longevity. So isbutter bad for you? Here's what recent studies found!

A recent study conducted by Harvard University and Mass General Brigham found that people who consumed more butter had a 15% higher risk of early death compared to those who used it in moderation. On the flip side, people who preferred plant oils had a 16% lower risk of mortality.

The results shed light on the ongoing question of whether butter or plant-based oils are the better choice for your health. Sadly for butter lovers, the findings suggest that replacing even two teaspoons of butter with the same amount of plant oil could lower the risk of early death by approximately 17%.

For the study, the research team examined dietary data from three major studies: the Nurses' Health Study, Nurses' Health Study II, and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. They tracked over 220,000 Americans' butter consumption, including for both cooking and spreading, as well as their intake of various plant oils, like olive, soybean, canola, corn, and safflower oils.

Over the course of 33 years, the researchers gathered this information via food surveys every four years. Then, they used the data to calculate averages and gain a clearer picture of eating habits.

A total of 50,932 deaths occurred throughout the study, with 12,241 from cancer and 11,240 from heart disease. The team adjusted for variables such as age, physical activity, weight, alcohol consumption, and smoking, which revealed a distinct trend.

Higher butter intake was associated with increased death rates; meanwhile, higher consumption of plant oils was tied to lower death rates. However, not all plant oils had the same effect, as corn and safflower oils showed no significant benefits.

Still, increasing plant oil intake by roughly two tablespoons a day was linked to an 11% reduction in cancer death risk and a 6% decrease in the risk of dying from heart disease.

"Replacing three small pats of butter (approximately 15 grams) with one tablespoon of plant-based oil (approximately 15 grams) in the daily diet could contribute to lowering the risk of premature mortality," the team wrote.

Now, this doesn't mean you need to cut out butter entirely. In fact, the study actually found that butter used for baking or frying wasn't strongly linked to mortality risk. This may be because it's used in smaller quantities or less often.

Butter being spread directly on foods, like bread, showed the strongest connection. So, the researchers suggest making small switches, like swapping out butter for olive oil or canola oil, to maintain taste and enhance your health.

"Even cutting back butter a little and incorporating more plant-based oils into your daily diet can have meaningful long-term health benefits," concluded Dr. Daniel Wang of Harvard's Department of Nutrition.

Together, they roamed the frontier and fought injustice.

Aside from the Lone Ranger becoming a symbol of heroism, the show was also groundbreaking in that it portrayed Tonto, an Indigenous character, as a trusted ally as opposed to a stereotypical enemy. This show is still a nostalgic favorite among fans of classic Westerns.

2. Cheyenne

Cheyenne, which premiered in 1955, was set in the years following the Civil War. It starred Clint Walker as Cheyenne Bodie, a compassionate scout who was raised by an Indigenous American tribe after losing his parents.

This series revolutionized TV since it was the first of its kind to feature hour-long episodes. Plus, Cheyenne was depicted as a soft-spoken and empathic person instead of the typical rough cowboy, making his character more well-rounded than one-dimensional cowboy archetypes.

3. Zorro

Zorro, which aired from 1957 to 1959, introduced audiences to Don Diego de la Vega, a masked hero played by Guy Williams. Set in 1820s California, the show followed Zorro as he fought against corrupt Spanish officials and pushed for the rights of settlers and Indigenous Mexican individuals.

He became known for his black mask, cape, and sword, which set him apart from other Western heroes who relied on guns. Zorro even went on to inspire a 1998 remake, The Mask of Zorro, featuring stars like Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

4. The Rifleman

Unlike other Westerns that center around outlaws or cowboys, The Rifleman followed Lucas McCain, a kind-hearted rancher played by Chuck Connors. His main priority is ensuring that his son Mark grows up in a safe environment, so he tries to keep the peace in New Mexico.

This show still features the classic Western facets like gunfights and frontier justice. However, it went further by incorporating deeper emotional storytelling and themes of father-son relationships.

5. Bonanza

Bonanza was one of the most beloved Western series of its time since it blended drama with comedy. The show, which aired from 1959 to 1973, followed the Cartwright family, a group of ranchers in Nevada, as they worked to protect their land and loved ones in the post-Civil War era.

It stood out because it focused on the ensemble cast, not just one hero, which allowed Bonanza to explore more complex themes and societal issues, such as racism. The series got so popular that it ultimately inspired various spin-offs and films.

6. The Virginian

After The Virginian came out in 1962, it became the first Western TV series to be formatted into 90-minute weekly episodes and forever changed the genre. It centered around a foreman known as "The Virginian," played by James Drury, who oversees Shiloh Ranch in Wyoming.

This show ran for nine seasons, allowing for deeper character and storyline development. It also featured a star-studded cast, including Harrison Ford, William Shatner, and Robert Redford.

7. The Big Valley

By focusing on the Barkley family as they ran a ranch in California's San Joaquin Valley, The Big Valley brought a fresh perspective to the Western genre. That's because the family is led by Victoria Barkley, played by Barbara Stanwyck, who was a trailblazing character for her era.

She was strong-willed and gritty and helped reimagine the role of women in Westerns, who were traditionally relegated to minor parts. Plus, her daughter Audra, portrayed by Linda Evans, followed suit.

8. Little House On The Prairie

Finally, this list just wouldn't be complete without Little House On The Prairie. Based on the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, this series followed Laura, played by Melissa Gilbert, as she grew up as a young girl in the late 1800s Midwest.

This show was a groundbreaking Western as it focused on a female lead and tackled the harsher realities of life on the frontier. Little House On The Prairie included themes of family, gender inequality, and sisterhood, making it a more relatable classic.

What's the biggest myth about hormonal acne?

I love relying on TikTok to find cute matcha drink recipes to remake, but I know some of the skincare advice shared on the app shouldn't be followed. But there's one thing in particular Gronich isn't a fan of.

"The biggest myth about hormonal acne is that you have to be on birth control in order to solve it. This myth is all over social media, but I believe it comes from the medical world not really understanding hormones and having to rely on prescriptions to override them."

Would you believe me if I told you she's not wrong? I've been on birth control off and on since I was teenager, but I've yet to see it get to the root of my acne problem!

What are different types of hormonal acne?

Did you know not all hormonal acne stems directly from your period? According to Gronich, "there are many different triggers" for it with "the most common ones being stress and high sugar or processed foods" because they "impact our hormones." However, that's not all!

"Also extremely common is PCOS, estrogen dominance, progestin-related acne from certain birth control controls like the hormonal IUD, and then there is another type of hormonal acne caused by the vitamins and supplements we take," she adds. Going a step further, Gronich says "certain vitamins and supplements can spike testosterone or interfere with other enzyme processes that throw off our hormones."

I guess this is why my doctor always recommends I consult with her before taking random tablets so I'm not disrupting anything in my body!

Why do I see breakouts on my forehead, cheeks, or chin sometimes?

Remember the face mapping tool we were introduced to years ago? There's truth to them which is why Gronich created a Pore-Clogging Ingredient Checker for you to get more insight about what you're putting on your skin. But back to what your breakouts are trying to tell you!

Given Gronich's experience, she knows "different areas of the face can represent different parts of the body." She sees "hormonal acne most on the chin and jawline" because "we have the deepest hair follicles there." Want to know what this means for our body's reaction to certain foods and products?

"Dairy has insulin-like growth factor hormone so many people who consume dairy regularly get hormonal acne right on their chin. Some people are taking too much vitamin B 12 which throws off their hormones and you see it on the jawline," she says.

Then there's our relationship with using a ton of beauty products. Gronich is firm about telling "people to remove pore-ingredients from their skin care ad makeup" because "acne that's all over your face" is the direct result of "something that's being put all over your face." Not being aware of what we're using "will flare with our PMS cycle, so we accidentally think it's hormonal," accodring to her. But nope!

"...it can also just be caused by those hidden pore-clogging ingredients," she states.

Okay, how do I treat what feels like hormonal acne?

No matter your skin type, there's a few ingredients you can use to treat hormonal acne over time. "People can treat their hormonal acne with mandelic acid, and spot treatments like sulfur," Gronich shares. She also says, "Benzoyl peroxide can be a useful tool as well but must be used carefully so as not to over strip the skin. Don't take this advice lightly because I accidentally created more issues when I used this haphazardly.

If you don't want to use Benzoyl peroxide, she says you try "ice rolling." The amount of times you can use this tool depends on your skin type. "...if you are oily, you can use these treatments every day."

How do I treat dark spots left over from hormonal acne

Gronich's tips for treating dark spots are making me rethink my shower habits because I've been doing the opposite of what's considered helpful for my skin. She says, "Avoid using hot water in the shower as it continually inflames the skin and further damages the delicate scar tissue!" Furthermore, you can "use anti-inflammatory products," according to her.

"Serums that contain hyaluronic acid can be very helpful, as well as gentle massaging to activate circulation which stimulates our wound healing response in the skin. Red light therapy can also be fantastic for scarring, along with professional micro needling treatments," she remarks.

The best things you and I can do are being mindful of what we eat, supplements we take, and what we put on our faces. Also, a lot of patience goes a long way when treating hormonal acne.
