The Ultimate Guide to Taking Care of Your Nice Things

Sure, Taylor Swift may think that we can’t have nice things, but we’re going to have to respectfully disagree with the pop songstress on this one. While it may come as an initial shock to your wallet to invest in luxe fabrics for your work wardrobe or a comfortable, durable mattress for your first apartment, you’ll end up saving money in the long run with investment pieces you won’t have to replace after a year. That is, of course, as long as you take care of them properly. And we’re here to help you do just that with this care guide for all your most prized (and pricey) possessions.

Clothing care

Not only does buying quality, timeless pieces from brands like Everlane and Reformation mean a sustainable wardrobe; it also means a chic one (double score). Sure, they’re a little pricier than their fast fashion counterparts, but using simple hacks like zipping up zippers before washing them (no snags) and switching to velvet hangers (no pulling) will ensure you’ve got those basics for years to come. We’ve got a ton of the best laundry care advice and tips to make your clothes last longer — and even have the scoop on how to properly wash and care for your swimwear (it involves vinegar).

We also suggest getting pieces like blazers, trousers, and vintage treasures tailored (see our full tailoring breakdown): They’ll become instant everyday essentials you can throw on without a second thought, which means you’ll look and feel great all day. There’s nothing worse than continually tugging at your pants or rolling up your blazer sleeves at an important meeting because they don’t feel quite right.

PS: Stains happen to the best of us — spilled coffee, dropped doughnuts, and dirty puddles are just a part of daily life — but our handy stain removal guide will make sure you keep your clothes spot-free. (Photo via Getty)

Phone Care

Your phone is one of the most important and well-used investments you own, which makes caring for it even more crucial. With Samsung+, you have access to guides and troubleshooting tips on your phone to improve your current experience or to “get to know” your new device. There are even Samsung Pros on-hand to answer questions 24/7, and you can give them remote access to resolve any issues immediately (it’s like having your own personal tech squad at your fingertips) — all for free. There is a whole library of tips, tricks, and how-tos that will help you maximize your battery life and use all the features you didn’t know you needed. With Samsung+, getting the most out of your phone is even easier than coming up with that perfect Instagram caption (though maybe the Samsung community could help you with that too).

Pet care

Taking care of a living, breathing critter is a major daily responsibility — but we love those furballs more than we love other humans (seriously, science says so), making all the stress more than worth it. To save your sanity, once you bring home a new pet, it’s important you learn how to keep them safe in cold weatherand in warm weather and feed them healthy treats to keep ’em strong.

We’ve also got all our pets connected to Paw Scout, a community-based GPS system to ensure they never get lost. A tag attaches to their collar that sends radar tracking to an app on your phone, so you can find Fido immediately.

Jewelry Care

There’s nothing worse than trying to untangle one of those tiny knots in a gold chain. To keep your necklaces tangle-free, we’re all about chic jewelry storage options that are as practical as they are pretty.

When it comes to keeping your stones shiny AF, all you need is a baby toothbrush and bottle of Windex (natural window cleaner just won’t do here). Just spray, brush softly, and rinse off with warm water to reveal some serious sparkle.

And it doesn’t hurt to take your most precious jewelry (engagement rings, we’re looking at you) into your local jeweler to tighten the prongs and give it a deep clean.

Kitchen care

Splurging on four quality knives is a must-do for any aspiring Ina Garten — but they do require some maintenance. You should be honing your steel knives after every use, the way you see chefs do it on Top Chef, you know? If you hone regularly, you should only need to get your knives sharpened once a year (we recommend hitting up a professional, but you can also do it yourself with a Whetstone tablet).

Since your appliances get so much wear, we suggest slowly upgrading your kitchen gadgets and appliances to the heavy hitters — just remember to clean them thoroughly with a natural kitchen cleaner after every use (yes, even around that annoying lip thing on your juicer’s lid).

And don’t be afraid of attempting to slay a quiche in a cast iron skillet just because you’re intimidated by the upkeep. It’s actually incredibly low maintenance (seriously, you just wipe it out after every use), and seasoning it before first use couldn’t be easier. (Photo via Getty)

My home is nearly clear of holiday clutter and that means I'm in major nesting mode. I returned from my holiday vacation with visions of crossing off my home decor to do list, including refreshing my daughter's vintage dresser (I already have the new pulls and walnut stain), repairing my favorite chair that my boyfriend's puppy used as a chew toy, painting my lower kitchen cabinets, and many other tasks. But I'm also on a budget (with design caviar dreams). So I'm taking it slow, looking at what I have around the house that I can rearrange to satisfy my nesting fix for free.

Here are easy, low-cost ways to upgrade your home in not a lot of time for not a lot of money.

Anthropologie

New Pillowcases

I was ready to completely redo my daughter's room, until I realized that I had bedding stored away that would be perfect for her tween room. (I ordered her a dragon pillow at her request too). For my guest room, I decided to refresh with just pillowcases vs. a whole new sheet set. I adore this color palette from Anthropologie, and I'm in LOVE with all of the colorful options at Society of Wanderers.

Lulu & Georgia

Wallpaper

I'm in love with this Sarah Samuel Sherman Painterly Stripe Wallpaper. I looked at more affordable options, but I decided I'm going to go with what I really want if I'm going to make a permanent commitment like this. Never settle when it comes to home decor is my motto! It's going in my small bath in the hallway so I only need one roll. For more affordable ideas, check out Rebel Walls and Chasing Paper's Peel and Stick wallpapers.

Etsy

Cute Table Lamp

I purchased this Etsy lamp and it instantly made my entry console feel refreshed and kind of adorable. I thought about ordering two for my bedroom side tables, but my budget only allowed for one and I'm glad I managed a little restraint. One was enough. Magnolia's Farrah Table Lamp has a similar vibe. Here's a similar and affordable one from Amazon too.

DeVOL Kitchens

Painting Kitchen Cabinets

UK-based DeVOL kitchens are so dreamy and the perfect inspiration for a kitchen refresh. I painted my lower kitchen cabinets a dark blue five years ago and they are desperately in need of a refresh. I'm leaning toward this Benjamin Moore's Oak Grove color for an earthy look.

Amazon

New Drawer Pulls

I bought my daughter's rough-around-the-edges vintage dresser a few years ago, but never got around to fixing it up. I bought these affordable wood drawer handles on Amazon and plan on sanding and staining it for a much-needed upgrade. Excited for this weekend's DIY!

Soil to Studio

Throw Pillows

I love the swoon-worthy pillows in this Soil to Studio collection. They are such an easy way to instantly upgrade your living or bedroom space without spending a ton of money. Quality vs. quantity! Greenrow also has fun cabana striped ones.

Etsy

Vintage Art

Scouring thrift stores for art that you love is an affordable way to upgrade and personalize your space. Like the frame, not the art? Grab it and find affordable art on places like Etsy and Desenio for a colorful wall upgrade.

Anthropologie

Picture Frames

Preserve your favorite 2024 photos in picture frames you can hang on the wall and leave on tabletops around the house. It's such a personal and lovely way to upgrade your space. You can DIY vintage frames or buy at places like Anthropologie and TJ Maxx.

Black Sheep White Light

Seat Cushions

Since my favorite desk chair suffered a puppy chewing attack, I haven't been able to find an upholsterer to mend the rope seating. Instead, I decided to buy a $50 sheepskin seat cushion and I love it! It's cozy and hides the eyesore underneath.

A Good Deep Cleaning

Sometimes a good deep cleaning can cure the nesting itch. Check out our 2025 Cleaning Guide for all the things you'll want to watch out for in your annual deep cleaning. A clean home feels like new.

West Elm

Refreshed Shower Curtain and Lining

My shower lining has seen better days. I'm going to try soaking it in the tub with vinegar or tossing in the washing machine on gentle cycle with warm water and a mild detergent. I don't currently have a curtain with it, so I may opt for this affordable one from West Elm, giving my bathroom a sweet little refresh.

W Concept

New and Clean Rugs

Whether you invest in a rug cleaner (I purchased this affordable one recommended by Wirecutter) or replace your old (dog-worn) rugs like I just did, there's nothing better than refreshing a clean room with a clean and/or new rug. While you're at it, upgrade your bath towels too!

Mustard Made

Get Organized

Organizing your drawers and closets is a great way to kick off the new year. These Mustard Made containers are cute and practical for everything from kids' toys to bathroom essentials.

How did Brittany and Patrick Mahomes choose their kids names?

Instagram/brittanylynne

Since the arrival of Patrick and Brittany Mahomes' new bundle of joy, fans started to notice something interesting about their kids. Aside from being cute as a button, each of them have very unique baby names. Instead of taking the conventional route, the darling couple decided to pick a theme that feels on par with Patrick's NFL winning streak.

According to E! News, Brittany talked about the theme for her kids names in 2023. While talking about her dogs, she mentioned their names. "I got steel in college and named him after that." Then she admitted she thought about naming their second dog "sterling cause it went with steel perfect."

However, thinking about her future children made her change her mind. "...one day I want that to be daughters name so then we came up with Silver to go with steel."

Once Patrick and Brittany named their first daughter Sterling, the dots connected once they had their son. "...having a boy and him being Patrick Mahomes III, Bronze was just meant to be and went perfect," said Brittany.

We can't wait to learn about the inspiration for baby Golden Raye's name although we have an inkling it still follows the theme of her siblings' names.

What did they almost name 'Bronze?'

Instagram/brittanylynne

Funny enough, 'Bronze' almost had another name! Patrick told PEOPLE, "We were going with Trey at first because the third obviously and everything like that." He then shared his brother Jackson is the mastermind behind his son's name. "I started meeting more and more people with the nickname Trey, and Jackson came up to me and was like, 'What about Bronze?'"

He later said, "I haven't seen anybody else do that...I like it."

What have they said about being parents?

Instagram/brittanylynne

Brittany Mahomes is always shedding light on her role as a mom. Based on this Instagrampost, Brittany adores it. "Thanking the Lord everyday for making me a Mom. My most favorite role and biggest blessings."

Patrick Mahomes doesn't talk about fatherhood as often, but he's still a doting father. When celebrating his daughter's birthday, he wrote a sweet post on Instagram. "Happy 3rd birthday Sterling Skye! You are my 💙! Stop growing up so fast."

Cleaning your house can be the most stressful part of hosting guests. But the cozy, happy feeling you get when you have a spotless home is literally priceless. (I actually think hiring a house cleaner is an essential form of self care.) That said, all your effort can be overshadowed by unexpected dirt or grime in hidden nooks and corners. To help you avoid this, here are a few commonly missed spots to tackle before guests arrive!

Here are all the spots you (probably) missed cleaning recently!

Kaboompics.com

Sink Drains

A spritz of cleaner around the sink and faucet can be satisfying, but do you ever notice how gross a drain can get? Look out for mold and hair just under the drain cover for a truly clean sink.

Kaboompics.com

Behind the Toilets

Guests will likely notice dust buildup in these spots as they reach for their TP, especially in small bathrooms. Make sure to mop or wipe with a cloth behind your toilet for a fresh, clean space. You'll get to enjoy after they leave too!

Lauren Pressey

Your Entryway

It can be easy to get lost in cleaning the main part of your house that you forget the most important part! Make a good first impression with a tidy and organized entryway. Hide to mail, dust and clean, and add fresh flowers or a candle to make it more inviting.

Michael Oxendine

Ceiling Fans and Light Fixtures

Ever look up and find yourself horrified by the black dust building up on your white fan? Ditto. Grab a chair or ladder and dust the blades to keep dust from spreading all around the room.

Element5 Digital

Door Handles and Knobs

Given it's flu and Covid season, this is also a respectful and hygienic choice.

Kristyna Squared.one

Inside and Outside Your Fridge

This is a good time to use up food that's about to expire and reduce clutter in the fridge. But don't forget the outside too. Smudges and old reminders can be an eyesore.

Kira auf der Heide

Under Couch Cushions

Crumbs or debris can show up as soon as a guest sits down. As you vacuum the floor, give your cushions a quick clean up too. You may even find some change or items you've been missing.

Megan Nixon

Front of Kitchen Cabinets

Grease and fingerprints can make cabinets look dirty. We often overlook cleaning these and shelves, but having guests over is a good reminder!

Lisa Anna

Inside Your Microwave

Guests warming food may be grossed out by splatters and stains inside the microwave. Don't forget to clean the inside and outside!

Kelly Sikkema

Windowsills

Dust and dead insects often gather here, especially in warmer months. If you haven't cleaned them since summer, now is a good time to vacuum them up and wipe them down.

SHVETS production

Trash Cans (Inside and Out)

Even with a liner, odors can linger in trash cans. Hose them down or clean them in the sink to refresh your bins.

Taryn Elliott

Remote Controls and Electronics

These are high-touch items that guests may use, so a quick disinfecting wipe is a good idea this flu season!

Starbucks fans, rejoice!Trader Joe’s just dropped an earth-shattering dessert that mimics the coffee chain’s most popular grab-and-go dessert. You’re gonna want to run to TJ’s as soon as possible to see if it’s in stock, because not only is it tasty, it’s also a total steal compared to what you’d typically spend for a sweet treat at Starbucks.

Scroll on to discover the brand-new Trader Joe’s dessert that’s definitely making me rethink my drive-thru habit!

Trader Joe’s

Introducing Trader Joe’s Sprinkle Cake Bites: bite-sized cake balls baked with a “rich and moist” batter, coated in a white confectionary coating, and tossed in adorable little multicolored sprinkles to maximize snacking joy. Yeah, I’m already obsessed.

Ksenia Chernaya / PEXELS

Trader Joe’s crafted their new Sprinkle Cake Bites out of the belief that cake is just too good a dessert to wait for birthdays and anniversaries to eat it – and I wholeheartedly agree. Their small size makes everyday indulgence a possibility, though knowing myself, I could easily eat the entire box!

Starbucks

Now, I’m clearly not one to deny myself something sweet, and my sugar cravings get especially enticed when I roll up to the Starbucks drive-thru for a caffeinated pick-me-up. More often than not, I’ll leave the establishment with not only my typical iced latte, but also a cake pop in-hand. All their cake pops are so delicious, but I also know they’re not necessarily great for my health (or my wallet).

Ivan Samkov / PEXELS

Great news, though: while a singleStarbucks cake popcosts $3.25, this 6-pack (yes, 6!) of Trader Joe’s Sprinkle Cake Bites is just $3.99. Plus, on average, Starbucks’ cake pops (varying flavors) also contain 160 calories and 16 grams of sugar, while one of the Trader Joe’s Sprinkle Cake Bites has 120 calories and 13 grams of sugar. The only thing that’s missing from TJ’s iteration is the stick.

Alexander Wark Feeney / PEXELS

The Trader Joe’s Sprinkle Cake Bites will definitely be on regular rotation in my kitchen, starting now. In addition to mid-workday snacking, I’ll also be snagging some boxes for friends’ birthdays and to share at this year’s Galentine’s Day party!
