A Conflict Expert Weighs in on How to Talk to the Other Side of a Debate

It’s been more than a week since America learned that Donald Trump would be our new President-Elect, but for many, the debates are just beginning. For starters, Californians are now calling to secede from the US and join Canada, Twitter is banning alt-right accounts and birth control wars are in full-swing (are you part of the #ThxBirthControl movement?) — yikes!

With a nation split right down the middle (or, at least the half that voted!) with regard to their chosen political champions, we find ourselves in a unique position. How do we talk to one another when our views are so radically different? Is it even worth trying? Can we really come to a consensus with our own friends and family members if they support ideas that violate our beliefs to the very core and/or vice versa?

As a litigator and conflict resolution expert in LA, Larry Slade sees this type of conflict almost every day. He points out that while current political debates may be making us uncomfortable, they’re doing so because, for the most part, we’re not used to this much conflict in our lives, and that’s a good thing: It means we’re largely harmonious.

Larry, on the other hand, is embroiled in lawsuits and arguments between clients on the reg. “We walk that walk every day,” he says. The difference? “We’re trained not to take it personally.”

Here, he offers us tips on how to do the same, with a list of Dos and Don’ts for when it comes to communicating with a member of an opposing party (or simply someone with an opposing viewpoint). Read on for his expert insight below!

DO: LISTEN

Larry says the number one no-no when communicating with someone with a different viewpoint from your own is “contemplating your response to a point while someone else is making it instead of listening. “[We’re] talking at and through and over each other,” he explains. Maybe that’s because, as Larry puts it, instead of treating political debates like a discussion, they’re often seen as a combat; one with a clear winner and a clear loser. But in reality, “That’s not how it is,” he says. “Two people enter, and two people leave angry.”

Instead, Larry says we’d be well-suited to look at our challengers as human beings rather than opponents. “[This] human being arrived at their position through experiences and perceptions that [you] might not understand about them,” he tells us. “Walk a mile in their shoes:” a concept he says is all too often abandoned in today’s society.

DON’T: DELETE YOUR FRIENDS AND FAM FROM SOCIAL MEDIA

We get it: When someone says something that totally irks you, your first instinct might be to just go ahead and click that little “unfriend” button. Without your antagonist there to provoke you, there’s nothing to argue about, and that’s really a positive, right? Wrong, says Larry. While it might feel good in the moment and make you more comfortable in the short run, you’re ultimately not doing yourself any favors. After all, how can we grow and learn from others if we’re only willing to hear our own viewpoints reflected back at us? “It is more emotionally comfortable to have a Facebook feed that has comments and features consistent with [our own] hidden biases,” he says. “It bolsters [people and] further supports their point of view.” The same goes for news articles. “[If] people see an article that confirms their bias, [they] automatically assume it’s true, and vice versa,” he says. “If you see an article that opposes [it, you] automatically think it’s untrue.”

But that doesn’t make it so. Just like stepping outside your own neighborhood to explore a new area can yield the most charming little hidden restaurant or coffee shop, exposing yourself to other viewpoints — even those you don’t agree with — can actually expand your mind, if you’re willing to do the work. “In order to be able to not respond by deleting or shutting people out, you have to be willing to be a little uncomfortable,” Larry says, noting that “It requires you do more homework. [It takes] time and effort and a lot of people don’t want to expend it,” he adds.

While there are always exceptions to the rule, Larry says that even in more extreme cases, when someone’s post or comment goes against your values or offends you on a deep or moral level, there are other ways to keep the peace. “You don’t have to delete them.” Instead, he recommends hiding their posts if you believe their point of view will interfere with your relationship.

DO: RESPECTFULLY SHARE YOUR OPINIONS

While some might be tempted to clam up and say nothing to avoid a conflict, Larry says to put that old adage, which says not to discuss money, politics or religion, to rest and go for it — if you can do so in a respectful manner. “I’m not sure that I’m always right,” Larry says. “I want to hear someone else’s perspective.”

Besides, “If you take those issues off the table, what’s left? Much more mundane subjects,” he says. “It’s not really the food that sustains us.” As a conflict resolution expert, small talk, like the weather and such, is not something Larry particularly recommends or advocates for in general. “It doesn’t further anyone else’s understanding.”

Instead, speak up if you see someone you know saying something offensive. “If you know them, and their comment surprises you, engage [them]. They may know something you don’t know. I think it’s good if it’s done respectfully. If you can agree to disagree, then engage in respectful discussion.”

DON’T: CONTINUE TO ENGAGE IN NON-CONSTRUCTIVE DEBATES

On the other hand, there are some fights that really aren’t worth the battle: particularly those that are becoming personal. “People have a tendency to attack their opponent,” Larry says. If you can’t refrain from make reductive statements about someone’s character (“You’re a jerk, you’re an idiot, you’re a racist/bigot/misogynist”), you’re better off bowing out. “The reality is, a lot of this stuff takes place in gray areas. There’s not an easy answer to it,” he explains. “Trying to reduce the other side to black and white is very destructive and doesn’t help the people engaged. It doesn’t shed any light on the subject.”

It also might be better to let it go when it’s becoming clear that neither party is willing to budge. “[We] all have different realities… they color the lenses through which we see the world,” Larry says. “You can’t wave your hand and change [someone else’s] lenses.” If someone is staying rooted in an opinion you disagree with, “there’s not much you can do [but] continue to be understanding and seek to be understood.” Or, change the subject!

DO: FOCUS ON THE SIMILARITIES INSTEAD OF THE DIFFERENCES

At the end of the day, you’re likely acquainted with the person you’re fighting with for a reason, so it’s helpful to remember what bonded you in the first place. “The reason we’re conversing [is that there is some] pre-existing connection,” Larry points out. “Now there’s something that’s pulling that connection apart.”

Instead of allowing an issue to do just that, he recommends focusing on our shared goals rather than nitty gritty details. “Focus on the outcome of a resolution as opposed to the mechanics of it,” he suggests, giving issues shared as an example. Maybe you dislike Trump while your friend supports him, but you’re both for a reformed healthcare plan. Now you’ve changed “what pulls you apart to what binds you together.”

DON’T: FORGET TO TAKE A BREAK

While it’s great that you’re passionate about your point of view, Larry says there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. “I think that everyone has a different level of stamina when it comes to disagreement,” he shares. “There’s a certain point in time when conflict becomes detrimental to you.” Whether it be mentally, emotionally or even eventually physically, it hits those who aren’t used to conflict particularly hard. “It’s very disquieting,” he says, adding that the extra weight of it all can easily cause you to lose sleep, overeat and stress, all of which could be bad news bears when it comes to your health.

At the end of the day? “Sometimes you need to just put it down,” he says. “Turn off Fox News or MSNBC.”

Amen to that!

By now, you may be able to recognize signs of gaslighting or other toxicbehaviors, but do you know how to take everything you've learned and become a super compatible couple? According to experts, there are a few key things super compatible couples rarely argue about — even with whatever faults each person brings to the relationship table. While the topics these couples avoid may not surprise you, the reason why they're able to avoid them might. But first, let's talk about what makes couples more compatible than others.

Dr. Brooke Keels, Ph.D., LPC-MHSP, LPC-Supervisor, Chief Clinical Officer at Lighthouse Recovery, has this to say: "Couples are compatible when they share similar values, goals, and know the best way to communicate with each other." Notice she didn't say these couples are just alike.

More so, she explains that "it's about how well they handle differences, whether they can support each other through tough times, and how they connect emotionally." Dr. Keels adds, "when there’s respect, trust, and a good balance of give-and-take between them?" Dr. Keels believes this gives couples a better chance "to be in sync."

Scroll down to see the topics you'll rarely hear compatible couples arguing about!

RDNE Stock project

1. Long-term goals like marriage aren't often a cause for concern.

Have you ever dated someone that made you wonder what you saw in them once you pay attention to certain red flags? You may have found yourself arguing with them about everything from religion to reproductive health, leaving you feeling dizzy afterwards. But Dr. Keels says compatible couples are more likely to be aligned on "whether they want the same things out of life."

Her examples include:

  • Relocating for careers
  • Family planning
  • Finding somewhere to settle down in general (i.e. apartment, condo, different state, close to family, etc.,)

"This common ground lessens the chance of fighting over these big topics," Dr. Keels reiterates.

Vlada Karpovich

2. There's a lesser chance arguments about weekend activities occur.

We're no strangers to indecisive moments where we couldn't agree about what to do on the weekends with our partners, but Dr. Keels says compatible couples don't always run into this issue. "When you enjoy similar activities or have overlapping hobbies, you're more like to find ways to unwind together, rather than feeling disconnected or frustrated by each other's choices," she adds.

While it varies from couple to couple, you and your partner may enjoy the following:

  • Buying tickets to watch the latest college basketball or football game
  • Going to a 'Paint and Sip' class for fun
  • Having a mini outdoor picnic
  • Visiting a national park if it's on your couple's bucket list
  • Spending a day at a local arcade

The possibilities are endless, but all that matters is that "this mutual understanding makes spending time together feel natural and fun," according to Dr. Keels.

Mikhail Nilov

3. Communication styles aren't causing a daily disruption.

Some people have a more direct way of communicating while others may be passive or even passive-aggressive. Less arguments aren't happening because compatible couples communicate the same however. "When they both understand each other's communication style — whether it's direct or more subtle — it helps avoid misunderstandings and frustration."

Here's a couple of examples:

  • If you're having a bad day that has nothing to do with your partner, they don't take it personal when you prefer some alone time.
  • If your partner says something they perceived to be a joke, but you didn't, you're less likely to immediately accuse them of being insensitive. Instead, there's a higher chance of asking what they mean by something and expressing why you didn't like it instead of arguing.

Compatible couples "know how to express their feelings and needs in a way that the other person can easily understand" which makes "it easier to resolve issues calmly," according to Dr. Keels.

Alex Green

Are couples better (or more compatible) because they don't have a lot of arguments?

Well, no. That's actually a stretch because everyone has arguments. "Even compatible couples can argue about everyday things like chores or schedules. No matter how well they get along or how "in sync" they are, little annoyances can still pop up here and there, and cause some tension between them," Dr. Keels shares. "The difference," she points out, "is that they're usually better at handling these moments and keeping them from turning into bigger problems."

The other thing she's seen couples argue about is money. "It's such a common stress point because everyone has different habits and priorities when it comes to spending or saving," she says. But, guess what? "Compatible couples tend to approach the conversation with more understanding and a willingness to find a compromise," she continues.

If you feel like you and your partner aren't on the same page, it may not be time to break up just yet. We've learned that that it can take time to effectively communicate with a romantic partner or understand them. Compatibility is great, but it's not an indicator that a relationship will be smooth sailing!

Keira Burton

How can I have healthier disagreements with my partner?

Like we said, getting to a point where you and your partner aren't consistently hurting each other's feelings during disagreements takes time as well as skill. No one's born knowing all the answers so don't think your relationship is over because you're still figuring things out.

Dr. Keels says one way you and your partner can work on the kind of disagreements you're having is by "knowing how to communicate/compromise." Look, we heard your sigh and know it's probably the antithesis of how you feel. We struggled with compromising, but you don't get far in life thinking that everyone else has to bend to your will all the time.

"Even if they don’t see eye to eye all the time, healthy couples listen to each other's perspectives, and look for solutions that work for both of them. It’s not about 'winning' the argument and getting to say who's right, but finding common ground so they can move forward together," adds Dr. Keels.

SHVETS production

Also, "staying respectful event when things get heated or when you're upset" is a way to have a productive arguments, according to Dr. Keels. What happens is that "healthy couples avoid yelling or saying hurting things during disagreements," she says. This means no cursing or raising voices to the point your next door neighbors feel they have to call the police to do a wellness check on you.

"Instead, they just focus on the real problem and stay calm, which helps them work through the issue without hurting each other and the relationship," Dr. Keels says. And in the event you and your partner can't find common ground in a given moment? She highly suggests you "take breaks or pause when things get too heated."

Couples who do this "know when to step away and cool off before continuing the conversation," she adds. There are times where it's difficult to have a proper conversation when you're anxious or angry, so it's always better to revisit the topic.

Dr. Keels agrees and says, "This gives them a chance to cool down first so they can properly think things through, and think of a solution that works for both of them without saying anything they might regret."

Since its premiere in 2020, Bridgerton has accrued quite the following, and fans are now anxiously anticipating what’s to come in season 4! As of July 2024, season 3 of the uber successful period drama series amassed 98.5 million views on Netflix, making it the sixth most popular TV show on the streaming service — and one of the most popular shows of all time! Unfortunately, and much to everyone’s dismay, season 4 isn’t expected to be released on Netflix until 2026. Though, two things are certain: the new season will consist of 8 episodes inspired by the third book in Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series (An Offer from a Gentleman), and we know the characters and the cast behind them.

So, to fill the Bridgerton void in your hearts, we present the official Bridgerton season 4 cast for you to meet and fancy. After all, you deserve nothing less, you deserve everything your heart desires (see what I did there?).

Dearest readers, burning for you below is the official and confirmed Bridgerton season 4 cast featuring beloved faces you can’t imagine your life without, along with ones you have yet to encounter.

Gavin Bond/Netflix

Yerin Ha as Sophie Baek

Meet your newest 2026 obsession — and Benedict Bridgerton’s season 4 love interest (and, sadly, a victim of tragic circumstances), Yerin Ha. Ha will play Sophie Baek, or known to Benedict as the Lady in Silver.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Luke Thompson as Benedict Bridgerton

Luke Thompson will once again portray the bubbly Benedict Bridgerton as our lead for season 4, where the fairytale begins.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Jonathan Bailey as Anthony Bridgerton

He's loyalty in every form, Jonathan Bailey will reprise his role as Anthony Bridgerton in season 4. Fortunately for everyone — and I mean everyone — in the interim we were able to see Bailey grace our screens in Wicked, so this wait doesn’t hurt too much.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Claudia Jessie as Eloise Bridgerton

Claudia Jessie returns as Eloise Bridgerton, the fifth Bridgerton child and second daughter known for being strong willed and independent in her own right (go Eloise!).

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Will Tilston as Gregory Bridgerton

Will Tilston is coming back in full swing as his character Gregory Bridgerton, the younger brother we’re all thankful we don’t have! In all seriousness, it’s always cute to see the good ol’ Gregory and Hyacinth banter from time to time.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Florence Hunt as Hyacinth Bridgerton

Florence Hunt returns as Hyacinth Bridgerton, undoubtedly the most outspoken of the Bridgerton bunch.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Ruth Gemmell as Violet Bridgerton

I found it perfectly fitting to place Violet Bridgerton, played by Ruth Gemmell, right under Lord Marcus Anderson, wink, wink!

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Hannah Dodd as Francesca Stirling

Francesca Stirling, the sixth Bridgerton progeny, will be played by the one and only Hannah Dodd. On paper, Dodd’s Francesca doesn’t have the happily ever after she experiences in season 3 for long, but now that we’ve met Michaela Stirling, I’m holding out hope the writers will flip the script in season 4 – for Francesca’s sake.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Luke Newton as Colin Bridgerton

Ah, Colin Bridgerton, the (fictional) man that you are. Needless to say, Luke Newton will return as Colin Bridgerton in season 4, although I’m not sure he’ll ever one-up his season 3 performance, because who doesn’t fall in love with an iconic friends-to-lover storyline?

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Nicola Coughlan as Penelope Bridgerton

Of course, Nicola Coughlan is returning as Penelope Bridgerton. The woman who is far too much like me — and who’s also a (not-so-secret) gossip columnist in her free time — is of course coming back. All jokes aside, Penelope stole the show, no pun intended, in season 3 and has quite the story line to pick back up in season 4.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Masali Baduza as Michaela Stirling

The incredible Masali Baduza is the chosen one to portray the gender-swapped Michaela Stirling in season 4. We got a short and sweet glimpse of Michaela at the tail end of season 3, but she’s definitely here to stay!

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Victor Alli as John Stirling

Victor Alli returns as Francesca's first husband and Michaela Stirling's cousin, John Stirling.

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Adjoa Andoh as Lady Danbury

Adjoa Andoh will return as Lady Danbury in the fourth season. We certainly saw more of Adjoa, deservedly so, as the quick-witted Lady Danbury was a more central role in the series’ third season.

Kevin Winter/Getty Images

Julie Andrews as Lady Whistledown

The ever so cherished and brilliantly talented Julie Andrews is making her way back for season 4 to voice the infamous Lady Whistledown. Even though Nicola Coughlan’s Penelope took over voicing the role, showrunner Jess Brownell told Glamour that, “We’re playing around in season 4 with ways that we can explain why it’s still Julie Andrews. I think it’s just—it’s in Penelope’s head the way she officially reads it to herself as she writes.”

Lorraine Ashbourne as Mrs. Varley

Lorraine Ashbourne will star as Mrs. Varley. The sharp-tongued Featherington family housekeeper will return, (hopefully) continuing to offer unwavering support to the family and comedic relief for fans, including myself.

Martins Imhangbe as Will Mondrich

The character who some fans consider to be the most noble of them all, Martins Imhangbe returns as Will Mondrich.

Katie Leung as Lady Araminta Gun

Sound the alarm, we have a new cast member for you and her name is Lady Araminta Gun, who will be played by Harry Potterstar, Katie Leung. Twice-married & twice-widowed with two daughters in tow, Araminta is a rather blunt woman who doesn’t respond well to anyone who stands in her way.

Michelle Mao as Rosamund Li

Michelle Mao stars as Rosamund Li. Beautiful, vain, and eager to please her mother, Rosamund is Araminta’s eldest daughter. Thankfully for her mother — and not so thankfully for Sophie Baek — Rosamund narrows in her sights on Benedict Bridgerton this upcoming season.

Emma Naomi as Alice Mondrich

An outspoken woman after my own heart, Emma Naomi returns as Alice Mondrich, the not-so-subtlewife of Will Mondrich.

Golda Rosheuvel as Queen Charlotte

Golda Rosheuvel stars as Queen Charlotte in Bridgerton season 4, and hopefully for a long time as fans speculate an impending death for her character, given the real-life timeline. Again, let’s hope they rewrite history here.

Hugh Sachs as Brimsley

Hugh Sachs will return as the Queen’s right hand man, Brimsley. Who doesn’t love this endearing man?

Polly Walker as Portia Featherington

Every story needs a nuanced mother and daughter relationship as it’s the gift that keeps on giving, or in this case, the story that keeps on giving. Polly Walker always, and will continue to, deliver in her performance as Portia Featherington.

Isabella Wei as Posy Li

I’m very excited for this new cast member, Posy Li, who will be played by Isabella Wei. Posy is Rosamund’s younger, chatty sister. Though, said chattiness often has her putting her foot in her mouth. I can only imagine the scenarios she’ll get her family into, and all I have to say is yes, please!
