How to Tap into Your Gut Feelings to Find Happiness

A few years ago, Jess Lively, host of popular podcast The Lively Show and personal development expert, found herself stuck in what seems like the ultimate uncomfortable post-breakup scenario — she and her ex were stillliving together. Having signed a lengthy lease and with limited financial resources to back them up if they opted to break the rental terms, Jess and her former boyfriend (their relationship started in college) decided to ride out the last four months on their lease. Unsurprisingly, the unorthodox arrangement met with strong opinions from her friends and family, many of whom wondered why she wasn’t intent on making a cleaner split. Jess had a different take on the situation.

“We loved each other, and he just wasn’t ready to take the next step,” she says. “Now and then, I just had to take a deep breath and realize it was a good thing [the breakup] wasn’t happening after the relationship went further. I knew it was important for him to have some time for soul searching. I just needed to find the good in it for me.”

Over the course of her breakup and the four-month-long unconventional cohabitation period, Jess realized that there were two perspectives to apply to her situation: one perspective driven by the ego, in which she could take the easier, hastier route of packing up her things, moving out and figuring out the rest later, and the other driven by her intuition, in which she allowed herself to calmly navigate her feelings about the breakup without making a dramatic move that might ruin her financially and rush the healing process.

Now, Jess uses these concepts of the ego and intuition as the foundation for her personal enrichment work. She shares her philosophy and also teaches us seven steps for tapping into our intuition to find happiness and make major decisions.

Ego vs. Intuition EXPLAINED

“The bedrock of all of my work is that there’s stress in our lives that comes from the ego and peace that comes from the intuition,” she says.

According to Jess, when making decisions and perceiving things in our daily lives, we have a choice between the two points of view. “The ego feels disconnected from others,” she says. “It believes in scarcity and comparison, and it causes drama.” In contrast, the intuition cultivates a calmer worldview. “It’s a peaceful place within ourselves, usually residing in our chest or stomach, and it’s our ability to access our true consciousness in any situation,” according to Jess. Have you ever had a gut feeling or just known something in your heart? That’s your intuition talking.

Jess also explains her philosophies on the ego and intuition using her favorite analogy for thoughts — the fire hydrant versus the water well. The fire hydrant represents the ego — it’s constantly spewing thoughts all over the place. The water well is the intuition, more slowly and thoughtfully expressing feelings and ideas. “Our intuition is accessible to us when we drop a bucket into the well,” Jess says.

The thing I spent the most time thinking about before the trip was packing lean and light for many climates while still looking cute (thank goodness I'm traveling in the spring/summer!). Now that I'm essentially living out of a duffle bag, carry-on, and backpack, I've got a little capsule wardrobe that has served me well so far. If you'd like me to make a vlog about what I packed and what I've learned, let me know. 😊👜💕 #alivelyadventure photo by @joanagalvaodesign

TAPPING INTO YOUR INTUITION

In her podcasts, online courses, retreats and writing, Jess’s goal is to teach people how to live their best lives by tuning into their intuition (or dropping a bucket into that proverbial well). Her first book, Letters to My Intuition, is also forthcoming. The book is a journal of a year in Jess’s life, during which she quite literally communicated directly with her intuition in order to help make major decisions, both professional and personal.

Writing to your intuition, which is a great tool for making major life decisions and dealing with stress, is one of Jess’s favorite exercises to share with her listeners and clients. She gave us a few tips and tricks for starting the exercise.

How to Write to Your Intuition IN SEVEN STEPS

1. Figure out your core question. Writing to your intuition is most helpful when you’re trying to make a significant life choice or when you need to work through some internal doubts in order to shut down your stress. Figure out what question (or questions) you’re struggling with. Jess recommends open-ended questions instead of yes/no questions.

2. Get writing. Grab yourself a cute journal and actually write out your core question. If it feels weird, it’s okay! Try thinking about this exercise as another way of practicing meditation or mindfulness.

3. Don’t rush the process. “People are so used to thinking that the immediate response coming from the ego is the only reaction, so they don’t take the time to listen to their intuition,” Jess says. “Get out of your head! Wait to hear from your heart or your gut before you write down an answer.” If you don’t hear anything from your intuition right away, it’s okay to stop and try again later. Remember it’s not what you think you should do; it’s what you believe, in your heart, is the right decision for you.

4. Follow-up with your intuition. Once you tune into your intuition, jot down what you’ve heard and ask a follow-up question. “It’s basically like text messaging with the universe,” Jess says.

5. Find a buddy. If you’re new to this exercise, it’s probably going to feel disorienting. Grab a buddy and work together to talk through the conversation you’re having with your intuition.

6. There is no right or wrong. Jess emphasizes that there is no single “correct” way to write to your intuition. It’s a different experience for every person, and all of us interact differently with our inner consciousness (similar to meditation). Some people find themselves writing a lot in this exercise, while others get shorter responses from their intuition.

7. Don’t rush action on your answer. After you’ve worked through your concerns by writing to your intuition, don’t let your ego force you backward! Take your intuition’s advice — but do it at the right time. “Your intuition is the idea that everything is working in your favor if you tune into it about what to do next,” Jess says. “But sometimes peace in the present moment doesn’t require action right away.”

It seems like the Sunday scaries came earlier now that TikTok's likely officially banned in the U.S. (goodbye BookTok)? Viral social media or not, every Sunday some of us get that dreaded feeling before the start of a new work week. There's even an entire Instagram account that accurately describes how we feel when the 'I hope this reaches you well' emails start rolling in on Monday.

While I definitely relate, What if I told you there were things you could do to lessen your anxious thoughts so you can have a productive week? They're not going to solve all of your problems, but they'll put those pesky Sunday thoughts in a bowl of Epsom salt so you can finally relax.

Here are some easy things to do on a Sunday to make your week amazing!

MART PRODUCTION

1. Set aside time for prayer or meditation when you wake up

Before you reach for your phone to check the news or your social feeds, take a few seconds to let yourself fully wake up. Once you're feeling more present in your body, say a prayer or find a meditation practice to do for 5-10 minutes. It's a great way to ground yourself while lowering your chance of rushing to get everything done before Monday.

2. Indulge in a longer morning routine

You don't have to tell us that you probably speed through your morning routine during the work week so give yourself permission to go a little slower on Sunday. You can soak in a lavender or eucalyptus epsom salt bath, or spend time exfoliating your body while in the shower. You can also use the new face mask you've been meaning to apply to your face!

Other things you can do are light a yummy smelling candle and listen to a soothing music playlist that makes you feel calm. It's our favorite way to create an at-home spa experience!

Victoria Harder

3. Begin planning your weekly tasks

This doesn't sound like fun, but having a snapshot of what you need to do during the week helps you stay on a track better than winging it. Something is bound to come up that pushes your tasks back, but you won't feel as rattled when your plans are upheaved.

In your physical or digital planner, block out your potential schedule based on tasks you know are more important than others. This will help you get more things done, making work less stressful.

Ivan Samkov

4. Go grocery shopping so you can meal prep

Meal prepping doesn't have to involve an elaborate plan, especially if you don't like to cook. Think about what you generally like to eat during the week. Let's say you usually drink smoothies in the morning, salads for lunch, and a mediterranean bowl for dinner.

You can create a grocery list that mainly involves produce (i.e. romaine lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, peppers, cucumbers, etc.,) and a lean meat or fish. From there, you can find different salad dressings, toppings, or seasonings that'll help you create several meals based on what's in your cart.

5. Tackle your overflowing laundry

You know the pile of clothes and towels you keep walking by, pretending like they're not there? They're going to irritate you during your busy week so start washing them on Sunday. As much as joke about not liking to fold our clothes once they've been washed and dried, it truly feels good not to have more tasks to focus on after a long work day.

Katie Mansfield

6. Plan your OOTDs (even if you WFH)

We're not asking you to become the world's next influencer by suggesting you should plan your OOTDs on Sunday. It's more of a way to help shake off any anxiety or angst during the week. Even wearing a new cozy rib knit set while you work from home can boost your mood, helping you perform much better at work.

And if you want to snap a picture of what you're wearing to share on Instagram, who are we to stop you?

Anastasia Polishchuk

7. Do something just for you

In the spirit of self-care, use Sunday to go for a hike, read a book, host an impromptu dinner party, or wander aimlessly around Target. You can even take a candle-making class or fly a kite! The 'what' doesn't matter as long as it's something that unlocks your inner kid and a ton of endorphins.
Alison Ives, Brit + Co's VP of content and creative says her Sunday usually consists of a "two mile reservoir walk" with her husband and their dog before grabbing a cup of coffee. She also catches up on reading magazines, journaling, and listening to an audiobook!

Cora Pursley

8. Honestly, take a rest day

You could do a ton of planning to make sure you have a productive week or you can use Sunday as 'do-nothing' day. Brit + Co's entertainment editor Chloe Williams says "I use Sunday as a rest day so the most I'll do are the dishes and check if I have extra meetings on Monday."

Polina Kovaleva

9. Go to bed earlier than midnight for once

If being a night owl hasn't made you feel any better come Monday morning, it's time for you to get the kind of rest that makes you feel like you were floating on clouds all night.

Meredith Holser, Brit + Co's affiliate writer says she tries to "resist doomscrolling" aside from focusing on self-care activities we mentioned earlier!

The beloved animated saga that first debuted in 2010 is soaring to new heights in a live-action retelling of How to Train Your Dragon. 3. Materialists — In Theaters June 13, 2025

A24

Mark my words, Materialists is going to be the next great rom-com. The summer movie follows a matchmaker named Lucy who finds herself torn between a handsome (and wealthy) stranger and an ex she can't let go of.

That sounds amazing in and of itself but the fact the trio is played by Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans? Sign me up.

4. Bride Hard – In Theaters June 20, 2025

Sonia Recchia/Getty Images

Everyone knows that weddings can be chaotic, but no one ever expects a full-blown hostage situation. Bride Hard follows secret agent Sam, played by Rebel Wilson, as she takes on the role of Maid of Honor in her best friend's wedding.

But when a ruthless mercenary group crashes the nuptials and holds the guests hostage, Sam is forced to take action. Directed by Simon West, this movie also features Anna Chlumsky, Justin Hartley, Anna Camp, and Stephen Dorff.

5. F1 – In Theaters June 27, 2025

Warner Bros. Pictures

This sports drama, directed by Joseph Kosinski, will star Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a former F1 driver whose career was cut short by a devastating crash.

Now, decades later, Sonny is pulled back into the racing world by a struggling team owner who sees him as the key to turning their fortunes around. So, as he returns to the track, Sonny has to mentor a new generation.

Dinosaurs are back in Jurassic World: Rebirth, the latest chapter in the iconic franchise. Scarlett Johansson stars as Zora Bennett, the leader of a covert team sent to an abandoned island facility, once home to the original Jurassic Park. Their mission? The new Superman movie is a new look at the iconic hero, and it features a bunch of other DC heroes too. The cast is incredible, and David Corenswet as Clark will make you believe that anything is possible.

Superman stars Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Sara Sampaio, Pruitt Taylor Vince, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, and Neva Howell. Wow.

The exact plot remains unclear, but one thing is certain: viewers can look forward to plenty of laughs. Don't miss the sequel's Netflix debut on July 25!

11. Freakier Friday – In Theaters August 8, 2025

Glen Wilson/Disney

The original Freaky Friday came out in 2003, and now, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are reprising their iconic roles as Tess and Anna in Freakier Friday.

I've been working from home since long before it became the norm. And my "office" has evolved from a spindled-back chair at the kitchen table to an airy home office with a view. Back then, my productivity took a hit without essentials like adequate storage space, comfortable seating, and a bit of privacy. While it has its perks, working from home comes with its fair share of challenges; your home office setup doesn't need to be one of them.

Here are 10 ways to redesign your home office for better productivity!

Caio

1. Bad Lighting

Dim or harsh overhead lighting can strain your eyes and limit your focus. Try to get close to a window for natural light or use daylight bulbs to mimic sunlight to boost your mood, creativity, and focus. Find a desk lamp that works for you too!

Ella Jardim

2. Clutter Everywhere

A cluttered desk equals a cluttered mind, IMO. Reduce the stress that comes with a disorganized and cluttered desk by bringing in shelves and organizers; finding sleek cable-management solutions; and removing any unnecessary items to reduce visual distractions.

Vlada Karpovich

3. Uncomfortable Furniture

If you're sitting most of the day, it's so important to invest in a good desk chair. An unsupportive chair or poorly sized desk can be uncomfortable, making it harder to stay focused for long periods of time. Your back will thank you!

Ketut Subiyanto

4. No Boundaries Between Work and Home

Distractions at home like kids and partners can kill your productivity. Avoid blurring the line between work and home life by designating a private space, separate from high-traffic spaces, for your work hours if you can. Use rugs, curtains, or acoustic panels to reduce noise too.

Mizuno K

5. Lack of Storage

I get it, they're not the best-looking pieces in your home, but without proper filing systems you’ll waste time hunting for important documents or supplies. Invest in modern storage options that look good too from Mustard Made and The Container Store.

Vlada Karpovich

6. Unoptimized Tech Setup

Slow Internet or outdated tech tools can make you feel totally frustrated and can slow down your productivity. Upgrade your Internet to a faster connection, and refresh your tech gadgets and programs to make sure you work more efficiently.

Ivan Samkov

7. Awkward Desk Placement

Placing your desk in a spot with too much noise, traffic, or distractions — like facing a TV — will guarantee to disrupt your concentration. Find a more zen spot where you can focus on the tasks of the day.

Anna Shvets

8. Ignoring Ergonomics

Check your monitor height, keyboard positioning, and add a wrist rest so you don't lead to feeling uncomfortable and fatigued, cutting your workday short.

Mikhail Nilov

9. Lack of Personalization

A sterile, uninspiring office design does your motivation and creativity no favors. Make work feel less like a chore by adding personal touches through artwork, personal photos, candles, some fresh flowers or plants. Greenery can improve air quality and actually reduce work stress. Add a little snack station for quick energy boosts and keep water handy. Also, your Zoom backgrounds should reflect your personality!

Serpstat

10. No Inspiration

No matter what you do — whether it's a creative work or something more analytical — you want to feel inspired. Personalization can help, but dive into vision boards, books, magazines, quotes that inspire your work and help you bring fresh ideas to your workday. Color psychology can help too: blues and greens encourage focus and reduce stress while pops of yellow or orange can spark creativity! Break out the paint if needed!

The quiet luxury of European-inspired decor is having a moment, with relaxed linens, rustic plaster finishes, and earthy palettes leading the way. Jackie Kosnett and Martina Biegel, the design duo behind Galerie Design + Build, reimagined an outdated 1950s home in Mar Vista, Los Angeles, turning it into a stunning retreat inspired by their travels to Italy.

1. Earthy Color Palette

Fresh off a trip to Italy, the principals infused the design with Mediterranean warmth, pairing clean contemporary lines with soft textures, rich materials, and an earthy, neutral palette. They repurposed the underutilized sunroom, relocating the kitchen there and turning it into a sleek, inviting space.

“We wanted to create a serene escape from the city through a neutral yet warm palette,” says Jackie.

Tessa Neustadt

In true Italian spirit, the kitchen serves as the heart of the home — designed with limestone, European white oak, plaster finishes, and unlacquered brass, anchoring the home's quiet luxury aesthetic.

The interiors were styled in collaboration with Neustadt-Studio, whose vision aligned perfectly with Jackie and Martina’s.

2. Vintage Decor

"From there we added vintage pieces from our own private collection, including a curved mohair sofa for a pop of color, Willy Guhl planters and a Pirman armchair by Heinz Julien," says Martina. I love the European inspiration and classic furniture design.

Tessa Neustadt

Blending old and new is a signature of Galerie Design + Build. Vintage lighting was thoughtfully layered in to bring character and a sense of history to the space.

3. Textured Materials

The pair could give a master class in layered neutral design. “Bringing in textured materials like leathered and tumbled natural stone, mixing different wood finishes, patterns in tile layouts or fabrics, and blending in vintage lighting and furniture will add depth while maintaining a neutral palette.” says Jackie.

Jordan Rodriguez

Limestone, European white oak, plaster finishes, and unlacquered brass continue throughout the home to add continuity.

Quiet luxury isn’t limited to neutrals — calming paint colors and vintage art can bring just as much serenity and sophistication.

4. Floral Accents

The floral bedspread has the charm of a classic Italian villa in summer — nostalgic in a beautiful way.

The result? A modern Italian-inspired sanctuary that balances simplicity and soul, right in the heart of Los Angeles.
