4 Expert Tips For How To Treat "Stubborn" Hormonal Acne — & Fast

how to treat hormonal acne how to treat hormonal acne

I don't know whether to treat my period acne as guests or annoying pests. I'm familiar with balancing my hormones, but even that seems to be a great mystery when painful breakouts appear on my forehead or chin. Even relying on a face wash fromFarmacy Beautyisn't always a match for their stubbornness.

But esthetician Danielle Gronich wants to dispel the idea hormonal acne's impossible to treat. Plus, she's exposing the truth about ingredients that could be causing flareups 👀. Known as The Acne Guru, Gronich has over 10 years of experience treating cystic acne, and is the founder of both the San Diego Acne ClinicCLEARSTEM Skincare.

What's the biggest myth about hormonal acne?

Taylor Nicole/Dupe Photos

I love relying on TikTok to find cute matcha drink recipes to remake, but I know some of the skincare advice shared on the app shouldn't be followed. But there's one thing in particular Gronich isn't a fan of.

"The biggest myth about hormonal acne is that you have to be on birth control in order to solve it. This myth is all over social media, but I believe it comes from the medical world not really understanding hormones and having to rely on prescriptions to override them."

Would you believe me if I told you she's not wrong? I've been on birth control off and on since I was teenager, but I've yet to see it get to the root of my acne problem!

What are different types of hormonal acne?

Anna Nekrashevich/Pexels

Did you know not all hormonal acne stems directly from your period? According to Gronich, "there are many different triggers" for it with "the most common ones being stress and high sugar or processed foods" because they "impact our hormones." However, that's not all!

"Also extremely common is PCOS, estrogen dominance, progestin-related acne from certain birth control controls like the hormonal IUD, and then there is another type of hormonal acne caused by the vitamins and supplements we take," she adds. Going a step further, Gronich says "certain vitamins and supplements can spike testosterone or interfere with other enzyme processes that throw off our hormones."

I guess this is why my doctor always recommends I consult with her before taking random tablets so I'm not disrupting anything in my body!

Why do I see breakouts on my forehead, cheeks, or chin sometimes?

Polina Tankilevitch/Pexels

Remember the face mapping tool we were introduced to years ago? There's truth to them which is why Gronich created a Pore-Clogging Ingredient Checker for you to get more insight about what you're putting on your skin. But back to what your breakouts are trying to tell you!

Given Gronich's experience, she knows "different areas of the face can represent different parts of the body." She sees "hormonal acne most on the chin and jawline" because "we have the deepest hair follicles there." Want to know what this means for our body's reaction to certain foods and products?

"Dairy has insulin-like growth factor hormone so many people who consume dairy regularly get hormonal acne right on their chin. Some people are taking too much vitamin B 12 which throws off their hormones and you see it on the jawline," she says.

Then there's our relationship with using a ton of beauty products. Gronich is firm about telling "people to remove pore-ingredients from their skin care ad makeup" because "acne that's all over your face" is the direct result of "something that's being put all over your face." Not being aware of what we're using "will flare with our PMS cycle, so we accidentally think it's hormonal," accodring to her. But nope!

"...it can also just be caused by those hidden pore-clogging ingredients," she states.

Okay, how do I treat what feels like hormonal acne?

Yan Krukau/Pexels

No matter your skin type, there's a few ingredients you can use to treat hormonal acne over time. "People can treat their hormonal acne with mandelic acid, and spot treatments like sulfur," Gronich shares. She also says, "Benzoyl peroxide can be a useful tool as well but must be used carefully so as not to over strip the skin. Don't take this advice lightly because I accidentally created more issues when I used this haphazardly.

If you don't want to use Benzoyl peroxide, she says you try "ice rolling." The amount of times you can use this tool depends on your skin type. "...if you are oily, you can use these treatments every day."

How do I treat dark spots left over from hormonal acne

Ron Lach/Pexels

Gronich's tips for treating dark spots are making me rethink my shower habits because I've been doing the opposite of what's considered helpful for my skin. She says, "Avoid using hot water in the shower as it continually inflames the skin and further damages the delicate scar tissue!" Furthermore, you can "use anti-inflammatory products," according to her.

"Serums that contain hyaluronic acid can be very helpful, as well as gentle massaging to activate circulation which stimulates our wound healing response in the skin. Red light therapy can also be fantastic for scarring, along with professional micro needling treatments," she remarks.

The best things you and I can do are being mindful of what we eat, supplements we take, and what we put on our faces. Also, a lot of patience goes a long way when treating hormonal acne.

I don't think I appreciated my acne-free skin days enough last month because I broke out on my forehead and near my upper lip as soon as August started. My pimples have been incredibly stubborn, so I've had to go back to the drawing board and start with the basics.

As much as I typically can get away with mismatching my skincare products, my skin doesn't respond to that when it's in rage mode. Thankfully, I found Farmacy Beauty's Green collection, and it's been my saving grace. Their products help calm any irritation my skin is experiencing, and all I have to do is stick with their curated routine for a couple of weeks without using too many other products. Is it worth it, you ask? I could say just say yes, but I'll let you be the judge by getting to know this clean beauty line, how I use a few of their products, and more!

What is Farmacy Beauty's Green line?

Sephora

Farmacy Beauty's Green collection is formulated to gently cleanse, exfoliate, hydrate, and protect skin. Created with oily, combination, and sensitive skin in mind, you'll find moringa (anti-aging and detoxifying properties) and papaya (helps removed dead skin cells and clears unhappy pores) are the main driving forces behind it.

It's also a certified clean beauty brand that's made with parabens and mineral oil, not to mention it's cruelty-free and the packaging is waste-free. You know I love products that are sustainable for our skin and the environment!

Why do I use Farmacy Beauty's Green collection?

Jasmine Williams

My skin has come a long way from being full of pimples and dark spots, but it's nowhere near perfect. I still experience small breakouts and my pores are always visible. When this happens, I try to primarily stick with using products from the same brand in the first four steps of my skincare routine.

I started narrowing down how many cleansing, toning, and moisturizing products I use about 10 years ago because I noticed my skin reacted better to that. My beauty organizer says otherwise, but that's becauseI'm not afraid to use other products when the situation calls for it. I just prefer to go back to the basics when my skin is feeling angry at something I've eaten, stress, environmental factors, etc.

So, how do I actually incorporate the Farmacy Beauty Green Collection into my skincare routine? I'm glad you asked!

My Skincare Routine While Using Farmacy Beauty's Green Collection

Jasmine Williams

Step One: Farmacy Beauty Whipped Greens Oil-Free Foaming Cleanser

Before I use Farmacy Beauty's Whipped Greens Oil-Free Foaming Cleanser, I dampen my face first. I like to think it helps signal to my skin that it's time to be cleansed, plus I can work the product in better.

Like the name says, it's an oil-free cleanser that's also pH-balanced and free of harsh soaps! It works its way into pores to gently remove any dirt and excess oil without leaving your skin feeling raw.

I'm serious: my skin feels squeaky clean and suspiciously soft every time I use it. I say 'suspiciously' because I tend to stare at my skin to see if it's going to start peeling or breaking out five minutes after using this cleanser. But nothing adverse ever happens, so I go on my merry way!

It does take some effort to get the product out, BUT you also don't need a lot for this cleanser to get the job done. A little truly goes a long way. I also want to mention that the cleanser is tinged green so you're not surprised. I don't want you to think you have a defective product — Farmacy Beauty just loves themes, so the color is on par with their aptly named collection.

Jasmine Williams

Step Two: Farmacy Beauty Deep Sweep 2% BHA Pore Cleaning Toner

My pores need extra TLC, which is why I follow up with Farmacy Beauty's Deep Sweep 2% BHA Cleaning Toner. It's an alcohol-free toner that not only deep cleans pores, but it also exfoliates and controls oil. I think I just heard a chorus of people with combination skin cheering, but I could be hearing things.

The point is, this toner doesn't sting after you use a cleanser which is ideal for anyone. I've used some toners that hurt and it makes me less inclined to use them.

Even if I'm using something like Kate Somerville's Sulfur Cleanser, I never stray away from using this toner.

Jasmine Williams

Step Three: Farmacy Beauty Oil-Free Gel Moisturizer

Every step of my skincare routine is important to me, but I really don't like to skip moisturizing my skin. It's true that Farmacy Beauty's Whipped Greens Oil-Free Foaming Cleanser and the Deep Sweep 2% BHA Pore Cleaning Toner make my skin soft, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't follow up with a moisturizer to lock that all in.

Oddly enough, I didn't realize I should be using an oil-free moisturizer until I tried this a couple of years ago. In addition to being hydrating, it helps balance your skin's natural oils and works to continue cleaning your pores. Sounds cool, right? That's not all! It's also free from fragrances and feels weightless on the skin.

P.S. Don't be surprised — it's also slightly green!

Jasmine Williams

Step Four: Farmacy Beauty Green Defense Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30

After my skin is cleansed, toned, and moisturized, I reach for Farmacy Beauty's Green Defense Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 whether I plan to be inside most of the day or not. I realized a long time ago that not using sunscreen on a daily basis was contributing to more hyperpigmentation, so I changed my tune quickly.

This particular product protects against UVA and UVB rays without being greasy. It's practically invisible so there's no scary white caste left behind either. If I'm wearing makeup, it works well with my e.l.f. beauty power grip primer for makeup — it makes for the perfect combination of matte and dewy!

Is it safe to use if you have sensitive skin?

Jasmine Williams

In addition to having combination skin, someone thought it would be cool to add in extra sensitivity to my biological make up. It's annoying when you're trying to find beauty products that don't cause breakouts and allergic reactions, but Farmacy Beauty is the first non-drugstore brand that's been a girl's girl for my skin.

Even though the products are formulated with moringa and papaya, your skin could still have an adverse reaction. Make sure you read the ingredients to see if there's anything you're allergic to, and do a patch test if you decide to buy the cleanser, toner, or gel moisturizer!

My skin and I have a very complicated relationship. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I hate it, but most of the time, I just tolerate it. It's like when it rains on a hair wash day...what are you gonna do about it? I usually have a meticulous skincare routine, and I take a lot of pride in it, but with so many external factors, I can't stop the blemishes from coming. As out of our control as it can be, there are some things we can do to at least minimize the damage. Pimple patches are one of the simplest, easiest, and most effective ways (besides washing your face) to combat acne.

Here are a variety of pimple patches that I've tested...oh, and you can get them all on Amazon!

Amazon

Peace Out Skincare Acne Dots

If you're looking for the perfect patch to cover your blemishes during the day, I would definitely recommend the Peace Out acne dots. They're super effective at clearing up any un-popped pimples pretty much overnight. Additionally, if you want to keep them covered throughout the day, these are quite translucent, so you can go about your day while still treating your skin!

Amazon

Kiehl's Truly Targeted Acne-Clearing Pimple Patch

If you aren't a fan of sticking something onto your face, I would recommend a liquid pimple patch instead. In my experience, Kiehl's skincare products are always worth the investment. This product doesn't act like a traditional patch, though — it doesn't dry when you apply it, so it's a little more like a serum. I usually put this on before bed and layer it with all my other nighttime skincare products.

Amazon

Mario Badescu Drying Lotion

Fun fact, this was the first acne treatment product my mom ever bought me when I was around 13 years old. She swore by it, and I do too. It's never failed me, and all these years later, I am still using it to combat my blemishes. What I like about this product is that it literally dries out all the puss and buildup in the pimple overnight, so by the morning, there's usually almost no pimple left.

Amazon

Mighty Patch Hero Cosmetics Original Patch

The Mighty Patch will always be a great, reliable option. If you're hesitant about where to start, get these pimple patches. They stay on for hours and do a great job of absorbing all the gunk in less than 12 hours. I've used these for a couple of years and always keep a pack with me on the go because you never know when a pimple will pop up (no pun intended).

Amazon

Daolyo Pimple Patches for Face

The Daolyo patches are very comparable to the Mighty Patch; you really can't go wrong with either of them. What I like about these specifically is that they come in different sizes, as not all blemishes are the same size. If you're prone to cystic acne, the bigger patches would be more useful than sticking on a bunch of smaller ones.

Amazon

Peach Slices Acne Spot Dots

For their price point, the Peach Slices acne patches work exceptionally well. They are not as fast-acting as the Mighty Patch, but they're a great overnight option. I would say they're still extremely effective and stay stuck to my skin better than any of the other brands I have tried before.

Amazon

Bioré Pimple Patches

I'm a big fan of the Bioré pore strips, so I wanted to try out their pimple patches too. My summation? I thought they got the job done. Were they my favorite on the market? Probably not. But they definitely helped reduce the redness and irritation of my pimples. They also stick on SUPER well, so if you're moving around a lot or doing some form of exercise, these would be a great solution.

Zoë Kravitz may have moved on already after her split from Channing Tatum, but she's not the only one! According to rumors, Channing has his own new love interest — and she's apparently a model. While we want him to be happy, we're heartbroken to see one of our fave heartthrobs off the market yet again! So here's what we know about Channing, how we got here, and his alleged new gorgeous girlfriend.

Scroll to find out everything you need to know about Channing Tatum's alleged new girlfriend!

I believe that practically everyone has had their own personal "Channing Tatum awakening" at one point or another. For me, that came in 2006 when he starred as Tyler Gage, alongside Jenna Dewan as Nora Clark, in Step Up. What's hotter than a troubled, handsome, and surprisingly talented hip-hop dancer falling in love with a ballerina? I rest my case.

That's why it was thrilling to find out the pair began dating in real life and tied the knot on July 11, 2009. But then, after having a daughter together, Channing and Jenna announced they were getting separated in 2018, and plenty of fans were devastated.

Their divorce was reportedly only finalized in September 2024. Regardless, that hasn't stopped 44-year-old Channing from getting back out on the market.

First, on October 30, 2023, the news broke that he'd gotten engaged to Zoë Kravitz, an American actress and filmmaker most well-known for her portrayal of Catwoman in The Batman and directing Blink Twice, which also starred Channing as Slater King.

www.instagram.com

Yet, one year later, in October 2024, Channing and Zoë called off their engagement and split up after spending three years together. Since then, the actor has seemingly begun seeing a younger model, 25-year-old Inka Williams.

Channing and Inka attended a pre-Oscars party hosted by the Creative Artists Agency (CAA) at The Living Room in Los Angeles on February 28. They've also been seen together around town. One source confirmed the pair were "seeing" each other when speaking to People after reportedly meeting through mutual friends.

www.instagram.com

"She's great. She has her own life. She's young but seems older," the source said of Inka.

"Channing's doing well. [Inka] makes him happy. He's reuniting with Zoë later this spring for another movie project. It shouldn't be too awkward; they ended things on okay terms."

Inka, who was born in Melbourne, Australia, and raised in Bali, Indonesia, is signed to IMG, a top global modeling agency. She previously said that her childhood in Bali shaped her into a "very compassionate person," and she later moved to London to grow her career.

www.instagram.com

In addition to modeling, the 25-year-old also launched her own fashion brand, known as She Is I, in 2019. Her mother often made her clothing when she was a young girl, and she viewed the business venture as a way to continue her mom's "legacy in design and bring back to life her amazing relations from the '90s."

"I always knew one day I would try my best to create those timeless pieces from her wardrobe! I still wear the pieces she made and wore through the '80s, '90s, and 2000s," Inka wrote on her brand's website.

Channing and Inka both have yet to comment on public speculation about their supposed relationship. Nonetheless, she did post a story from the beach on her Instagram @inkawilliams, with the words "I love you" written on top of the sand.
