How to Treat Scalp Zits, According to Experts

For those of you who struggle with scalp zits, you know that getting rid of them isn’t as simple as dabbing on a spot treatment from your stash of go-to skincare products. Just like acne on your face or back (otherwise known as “bacne”), these blemishes require a specific skincare regimen. Not sure what exactly that entails? To help make things easier, we talked to the experts to figure out why these pesky pustules may appear and the best way to treat them.

While pimples on the scalp can affect anyone, there are certain factors that may cause them to rear their ugly heads. “Scalp zits are caused by a combination of factors, including bacteria, oil, and excess skin cells accumulating in the hair follicles,” explains Michele Farber, a New York City-based dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group. Product buildup from hair gel, dry shampoo, or leave-in conditioner can clog the hair follicle, and not washing your hair thoroughly (to get all of that product out) can compound the issue. If you sweat profusely during workouts, this may also put your scalp at risk, especially if you’re wearing a hat. Yeast tends to overgrow in hot, humid environments, so sweating while wearing any kind of head covering can trigger scalp breakouts.

But you’re not destined to have blemishes forever (and you won’t have to change your beauty or workout routine, either). According to Jennifer Chwalek, a New York City-based dermatologist at Union Square Laser Dermatology, “Often these zits resolve on their own. And if there is just one or two, you may not need to treat them with anything.” Just remember: Hands off. “Don’t pick,” says Farber. “[Instead] use anti-inflammatory shampoo to calm the cause of the scalp acne.” If you’re getting multiple scalp zits at a time (more than one or two) or recurring outbreaks, it’s time to try an over-the-counter remedy like a shampoo or spot treatment.

One of the easiest solutions is shampoo, which gently cleanses the affected area without stripping the scalp of its protective barrier. Look for botanical oils, like tea tree oil and peppermint, or salicylic acid, glycolic acid, benzoyl peroxide, ciclopirox (an anti-fungal), and ketoconazole (another anti-fungal). “Any anti-dandruff shampoo or shampoos containing salicylic acid can help. They work by exfoliating the clogged pores and removing excess oil,” says Chwalek. As a general rule, if you don’t notice any change in your condition with OTC products, be sure to follow up with a dermatologist. Topical steroids or antibiotics are sometimes needed for more severe bouts, but your doctor can find the best hair care routine for you.

To learn which scalp shampoos and treatments are worth your money, read on.

Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo ($15): “Nizoral is a common anti-dandruff shampoo. It works as an anti-fungal targeting the yeast that causes dandruff but also folliculitis and scalp pimples,” explains Chwalek. Ketoconazole (an anti-fungal) is the star ingredient in this product, which can help control any itching or scaling that’s associated with breakouts beneath your hair. As the active ingredients are quite strong, use only twice a week (in between your normal shampoo). Work it into a rich lather in your hair and rinse clean.

Fekkai Apple Cider Shampoo ($14): “This option contains apple cider vinegar, which is known to improve the pH balance of the skin, kill bacteria (apple cider is anti-microbial), and dissolve dead skin cells that plug pores and cause acne,” says Chwalek. It clarifies without drying out your hair, so you can lather up several times a week. For best results, massage a small amount into damp hair and rinse well.

Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo ($34): “Tea tree oil has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties so it can calm red, irritated skin,” says Chwalek. This is what makes it such a popular choice in many hair and beauty products. Used in this shampoo, it effectively removes dead skin cells, oil, excess product, bacteria, and other gunk that might lead to pimples on your scalp. Paul Mitchell’s formula also relies on lavender and peppermint oil, which may soothe existing zits and increases blood circulation (it’s also been known to potentially improve hair growth). In the shower, apply a small amount to damp hair and gently massage. Rinse thoroughly.

Aveda Pramasana Purifying Scalp Cleanser ($35): This gentle cleanser is specially formulated to cleanse your scalp, rather than your hair. It relies on plant-derived ingredients including babassu oil, neroli oil, and antioxidant-rich tamanu oil. According to Chwalek, “Aveda’s scalp cleanser uses a blend of salicylic acid (a natural form of it from wintergreen), which helps to exfoliate the scalp, as well as a blend of ingredients like seaweed extract to help balance sebum levels.” With its impressive cocktail of botanical ingredients, this tingly scalp cleanser will leave you feeling clean and refreshed. Apply to a wet or dry scalp and follow with shampoo.

No matter where he and Megan stand, the rapper made it clear he's excited their daughter was born safe and sound. The sweetest part of his caption is him calling the newborn a "little celestial seed."

He also explained that Travis Barker helped welcome their daughter through music, adding, "We composed the score of the birth. What an epic journey. Praise God."

We also love positive the comments on the announcement post are! Even MTV couldn't resist commenting by writing, "congratulations ♥️."

TMZ reported Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly broke up on Tuesday, December 10, 2024. The pair allegedly split on Thanksgiving weekend in Vail, Colorado given "upsetting material" Megan found on MGK's phone. Apparently they haven't been together since the breakup, with MGK going as far as to leave their trip early.

Megan announced she was pregnant on Instagram a month before they allegedly broke up, on November 11, 2024. According to PEOPLE, MGK was "basically telling everyone he knows" about the baby, and that the pair is "doing well" in general. Now, it seems like the tables have really turned in the latter regard.

However, an exclusive source told PEOPLE, "Their relationship has always been bumpy. They love each other but don't have compatible personalities." The source explained that Megan and MGK are "both hot-heads, dramatic and stubborn," noting that they've "worked things out" when they broke up in the past. "When they're good together, they're great," they said. "They will very likely get back together."

PEOPLE reported that Megan and MGK announced their engagement on Instagram on January 12, 2022. However, the Jennifer's Body star only features her pregnancy announcement on Instagram now — and while MGK doesn't have a post on his grid either, you can still see his video of her engagement ring here!

Beauty appointments are at the top of my self-care list, but you there's one question that's always sat in the back of my mind. Do I have bad habits that are annoying to my hairdresser or am I a "good" client? This could stem from being listening to retail horror storiesand fighting the urge to gasp in horror at customers' behavior.

No matter what it is, it's apparent hairdressers aren't a fan of everything you and I may do before, during, and after our appointments. Out of curiosity, I asked the following hairstylists about their biggest pet peeves:

Learn which bad habits you should stop doing if you want to stay in your hairdresser's good graces!

1. Coming To Your Appointment After Being At The Gym

Madison Kinsley/Dupe Photos

I'm thoroughly surprised that people do this because I know how sweaty I get after a workout. But Jorge's had clients who've done this and it's not a good look, according to her. "Yes your service begins with a wash, but seriously," she asks. I don't think you need a reminder, but you might want to take a shower after your gym or pilates session out of courtesy for your hairdresser!

2. Arriving Late To Your Appointment

Most hairdressers have have a grace period for clients because they understand things happen, but that's not your cue to take advantage of their kindness. For Durante, "being late is the primary issue." Want to know why? He says it's because this "backs up all the appointments and creates a domino effect of issues that can often be hard to catch up on."

3. Acting Like An Armchair Stylist

cottonbro studio/Pexels

Hair appointments should be collaborative, yes, but not to the point where your hairdresser feels like you're trying to do their job for them. Jorge says, "The most nerve-wrecking thing a client can do while they are in the chair is constantly second guess what the stylist is doing or changing their minds about their service. Clients need to trust their stylist and not back seat drive every snip."

If you're guilty of doing this, try to be mindful of how this makes your hairdresser feels. They're providing a service, but they're still human.

Jorge also says, "Sometimes, I just want to give the client the scissors and let them cut their own hair. J/K.."

Rene Terp/Pexels

It's something Durante doesn't care for either. "We always encourage our clients to give as many details as possible with how they want their hair to be cut, colored, and/or styles, but directing the service and telling the hairstylist exactly how to do their hair in step-by-step format is unnecessary when seeing a professional," he states.

Should you be afraid to talk to your hairdresser? Not at all, but it's unhelpful if you think you're more equipped to do your hair while sitting in their chair. "We appreciate a client's direction as it is their look, but critiquing and instructing us on how to reach the end goal is beyond frustrating. Quite frankly, we have spent years handling requests and know exactly how to achieve your desired look based on the tools we've gathered throughout the years," Durante adds.

5. Waiting To Share Your Dissatisfaction

Antoni Shkraba/Pexels

Another annoying behavior stems from something we've all done at least once. Durante says, "When completing a cut or color based on an inspiration photo, the client says they "wanted to go a different direction" - but only tells us once the service is completed."

At this stage in life, I realize the importance of communicating with my hairdresser throughout my appointment. People can't read minds so it's something to think about if you typically wait until your service is over to complain.

6. Covering Your Hair Once It's Been Styled

Melissa Romee/Dupe Photos

According to Jorge, it's annoying when "after receiving a hair cut and styling, the client wears a hat or covers their hair." I'm always excited after a hair appointment because it's a chance to enjoy and show off my new refreshed look, but I guess some people feel the need to "hide" their style.

Her other pet peeves? "Washing their hair with a cheap, sulfate shampoo that ruins their color. Going for a swim after a keratin treatment only to dry their hair afterwards and realize a giant frizz bomb where perfectly straight hair once was."
