The Jeans Hack Girls Who Hate Pants Will Love

There are those girls who swoon over every new style of jeans that pop up for the fall, and then there are those girls who flat-out hate wearing pants. Whatever the reasons — maybe you’ve never had luck finding a comfy fit, you’re more of a toss-on-and-go dresser (think: skirts, dresses + jumpsuits) or those 18 years of uniform-wearing really rubbed off after school — jeans just don’t have the same gotta-rock-it lure for you. But a jean skirt, now that sounds more up the right alley.

So when we asked Lisa, our Editorial Director, who swears by that #skirtlife to be a part of our DIY Denim Challenge, she deviated from classic jean DIYs and took things to the next-level by snipping off the legs and whipping up a so-cute (and very on-trend) jean skirt. Well, there was a little more effort to it than that — full disclosure: you’ll need to have nailed sewing 101 to make this transformation happen, but we’d take learning a new skill over letting that pair of pants go to waste in your drawer. Learn how to turn your old jeans into something way more suited for your style below!

How to Turn Jeans into a Skirt

Materials:

– jeans (we recommend high-waisted jeans or mid-rise jeans)

Tools:

– sewing machine

– seam ripper

– fabric scissors

– fabric pins

– chalk

Mark your jeans with chalk right above the knee and cut along that marking with fabric scissors.

Use a seam ripper to remove the stitches on the inside of both legs. Continue removing the stitches until you reach the zipper on the front side of the jeans. Then, flip the jeans over and remove all rear seam stitches until you reach the waistband.

Now it’s time to shape your skirt. The main goal here is to get the front panels to cross and lay evenly and for the bottom edges to meet up. This is the trickiest — and most important — part, so be sure to try different arrangements and pin the bottom together to see what looks best. Once you find the sweet spot, use chalk to draw a straight line from the bottom center of the zipper to the bottom center of the skirt, then trim the excess fabric. Then, fold the edge of the front fabric panel under until you get a straight perpendicular line down the center of your skirt. Pin the fabric in place.

The back will work quite similarly, but you don’t need the bottom edges to meet up. Pin the panels together about three inches from the edge of the jeans, then draw, cut, fold and pin the panels in place until you get a straight rear seam. The extra three inches on the bottom will be the slit in your pencil skirt. Pin the edges back to create a clean hem.

Now, sew your skirt. Be sure to mimic the double parallel stitch that is often seen in denim on both the front and the back by sewing two straight lines about 1/4 inch away from each other.

Finally, hem the bottom edge of the skirt or embrace the torn denim look.

Even if you’ve banned jeans from your wardrobe up until this point, this DIY might actually give you a reason to (temporarily) slip into a pair. For a cute pencil skirt, like the one Lisa made, use jeans with a mid-rise; if you want to try out the mini skirt trend, we recommend going with high-waisted jeans so that your final skirt doesn’t turn out *so* teeny. Whichever way you go, take a cue from Lisa on how to style it, “I can see taking this denim pencil skirt out on the weekend to brunch, to the office during the week with a blouse and even wearing it on a date with a crop top. And heels, definitely heels.”

Ask anyone who knows me and they'll tell you I'm consumed with fashion, but you know what makes me want to burn things down to the ground? It's trying to find pants or jeans that flatter my petite height. For reasons beyond my control, I'm in the 5'2" club which makes finding short girl-friendly clothes harder than it needs to be, ugh!

From boot-cut to skinny jeans, I'm picky about what I buy because I've been known to look like a tiny, angry chipmunk who's been forced to wear something against her will. Chipmunks are cute, but I'm sure they wouldn't want to wear anything ill-fitting and I'm sure you feel the same!

Keep scrolling to find the best petite jeans that anyone 5'3" and under can confidently wear!

Madewell

Madewell Petite Superwide-Leg Jeans

As a former wearer of skinny jeans, I've been on the wide-leg train for a while. They're roomier IMO and give me reassurance that I won't unnecessarily rip a seam when bending down. Particularly, I live in this pair by Madewell. They're the perfect wash and elongate my frame!

Style tip: I usually wear ankle strap pump heels with them for an elevated look!

J.Crew Factory

J.Crew Factory Wide-Leg Crop Jean

I don't wear cropped jeans often, but J. Crew encouraged me to take a risk with this pair. The waist area reminds me of Madewell's Superwide-Leg design, but distressed hem makes them look less stuffy. I've purchased ankle jeans before and the fit was terrible so I was pleasantly surprised at how great these look on me!

Express

Express High Waisted Light Wash Jeans

These light wash jeans are also cropped, but the hem is more straight-forward than J. Crew's version. I usually wear this pair when my household has doctor's or dentist's appointments because they have an air of comfortability about them. When you're on the go, it's important to be able to move around when you need to!

Banana Republic Factory

Banana Republic Factory Mid-Rise Straighter Carpenter Jeans (Petite)

The first thing that drew me to these jeans are their Ecru color. The second is how well they fit when I tried them on in-store. Lengthwise, they stop slightly below my ankles which is good when I actually want to show off my shoes. Sometimes I don't want to go for the oversized wide-leg look so these are always a good alternative for me.

Pistola

Pistola Petite Lana High Rise Wide Leg Jeans

It's true — I'm preoccupied with this style of jeans. Aside from Madewell, Pistola has the best feeling denim I've had the pleasure of wearing. This pair specifically doesn't feel stiff, but they don't get wrinkled either! Also, the hem doesn't drag the ground which is a nice change from the pairs I own that do this.

Good American

Good American Petite Skate Jeans

Here's the thing — skate jeans were popular when I was in middle school. A few of my former friends used to wear them with Vans so I'll always have a soft spot for them. The only thing I don't recommend doing is wearing them on rainy days because that wet feeling on your ankles feels weird.

Ann Taylor

Ann Taylor Petite Cuffed Palazzo Jean

I never knew the words "cuffed" and "palazzo" could fit in the same sentence, but Ann Taylor's made me a believer. These jeans take business casual to the next level because of their darker wash and overall fit. They're not too "skinny" or "wide," giving you the perfect invitation to wear a slightly oversized blazer with them. At least that's what I do.

Talbots

Talbots Everyday Relaxed Jeans (Plus-Sized Petite)

I'm not necessarily plus-sized but I added these relaxed jeans because one of my friends can't stop raving about them! She doesn't necessarily love the wide-leg look so having something that fits her frame and is easy to style works with however she feels like dressing on any given day.

Citizens of Humanity

Citizens of Humanity Petite Micro Relaxed Jeans

Are they relaxed or barrel jeans? It truly depends on how you want to classify them. According to Citizens of Humanity, they're the petite jeans everyone needs in their closet. Okay, I'm imagining that was the general consensus when they were designed.

Anthropologie

Pilcro Kenna Mid-Rise Barrel Jeans

These are definitely barrel jeans and I love them! I tried a pair from a different brand last year and couldn't stand the way they looked on me, but Pilcro gets it right! The wash also has a very earthy tone to it, making it a good complement to brown, taupe, and cream tones!

Reiss

Reiss Petite Skinny Jeans

Did you think I'd really leave skinny jeans off this list? I'm appalled! Jokes aside, I'm not against wearing them and found that I have specific requirements for the leg huggers. They have to look streamlined and can't make me feel like I have to peel them off my skin so I can breathe. It just so happens this pair understands the assignment.

L'AGENCE

L'AGENCE Leighton Cropped Stovepipe Jeans

What has cute red seams with a cuffed and cropped hem? L'AGENCE's pair of stovepipe jeans. They make me feel like I'm reliving the pair Olivia Newton-John wore in the original Grease so I try to slip into them when I'm feeling a little edgy.

P.S. Do you see the the slightly curved waistline??

We've all been taught to respect the wisdom of our elders, but in today's world, is advice from Boomers really relevant anymore?

Think about it: this generation, born between 1946 and 1964, got to benefit from easier access to entry-level positions, more affordable home prices, and much cheaper college tuition rates. Nowadays, younger generations are grappling with housing shortages, high mortgage rates, student loans, and an extremely competitive job market.

So, whether it's about career choices or money management, here are some classic pieces of outdated Boomer advice that haven't aged well and need a refresh.

Scroll to see all the old-fashioned Boomer advice that just didn't age well...

1. "Follow your dreams."

cottonbro studio

This phrase became a mantra for many Boomers, pushing the idea that pursuing passion and fulfillment in work should be a top priority. Unfortunately, that's just not realistic any more.

Sure, passion is important, but the reality is that dreams don't always pay the bills or ensure financial stability. Today, many people find themselves balancing passion with practicality by taking on side gigs, freelancing, or choosing careers that might not be their ultimate dream job but offer security.

2. "You can pull yourself up by your bootstraps."

RDNE Stock project

Pulling yourself up by your bootstraps has long been hailed as the hallmark of self-made success. It suggests that anyone, regardless of their background, can achieve greatness through pure hard work and determination.

However, younger generations agree that's just not the case in 2025. With growing economic inequalities, skyrocketing housing costs, and student debt, that proverbial bootstrap can feel pretty elusive. For many, the idea of pulling yourself up isn't as simple as working harder; it's a matter of having access to the right opportunities and resources.

3. "You can be whatever you want."

Anastasia Shuraeva

Again, just because someone wants to be a lawyer or doctor (and is willing to work hard) doesn't mean they can. Sure, the idea of limitless potential sounds inspiring, but it blatantly overlooks the systemic barriers that so many people face.

In the modern era, the road to success is often paved by factors beyond anyone's control, like access to education, family wealth, and even geography. The harsh truth is that "being whatever you want" is a lot harder with these obstacles in the way.

4. "Go to college, get a degree, and you'll be set."

Moe Magners

It was once thought that a degree would immediately open the door to a stable, well-paying job and a secure future. While college education is still valuable today, it's no longer a guarantee of success, especially due to crippling student debt and a more competitive job market than ever.

Many graduates still find themselves underemployed or stuck in jobs they didn't really want. So, unfortunately, degrees are no longer surefire tickets to successful careers.

5. "You should buy a home instead of wasting money on renting."

MART PRODUCTION

Homeownership was a milestone viewed as a mark of stability and success. Meanwhile, renting was considered a temporary solution.

Even so, high home prices and interest rates, coupled with housing shortages, have left plenty of young people simply unable to buy their own property. Instead, renting has now become a long-term reality for many.

6. "It's taboo to talk about money."

Ron Lach

Talking about income or other financial matters used to be considered tacky or inappropriate. Yet, salary transparency is more important than ever in 2025.

Wage inequality and pay gaps are major issues, and openly discussing money helps ensure people are fairly and equally compensated in the workplace. Many employees now recognize the power of sharing their salary as a way to hold their bosses accountable and help others negotiate better pay.

7. "Just save your money."

Pavel Danilyuk

Anyone with a Boomer parent has probably been told that if they "just" set aside a portion of their income, they'll be set for the future. That's not true anymore.

With inflation and rising living costs, stashing cash away in the bank isn't enough to secure financial stability. Not to mention, many people can't even keep up with the increasing costs of essentials, let alone saving to build wealth. Instead, budgeting, investing, and strategic financial planning are essential for money management today.

8. "Settle down and start your family."

Mikhail Nilov

Last but not least, settling down and starting a family used to be viewed as the natural next step in adulthood. But this advice doesn't resonate the same with younger generations.

The pressure to settle down has been replaced with a desire to achieve personal growth, career advancement, and financial independence first. Also, starting a family isn't a one-size-fits-all goal anymore, especially amidst evolving gender roles and an increased focus on mental well-being. That's why more people are choosing a path that feels right for them as opposed to following a set timeline.

A new Colleen Hoover movie is in the works. Reminders of Him (which the author published in 2022) is getting the film treatment alongside It Ends With Us, Verity, and Regretting You — and we finally have our first cast member. Keep reading for the latest news on the movie, and check back here for updates as they're announced!

Here's everything we know about Colleen Hoover's Reminders of Him movie.

Is Reminders of Him going to be a movie?

Amazon

Yes, a Reminders of Him movie is coming soon! Deadlineannounced in October 2024 that Universal Pictures was adapting Colleen Hoover's book of the same name, and Vanessa Caswill (who directed Love at First Sight) was announced as director in December 2024.

When is Reminders of Him coming out?

Universal has scheduled Reminders of Him to release on February 13, 2026 so we'll see it next year! Considering Verity is currently filming, I expected that movie to hit theaters in 2026 and Reminders of Him to come in 2027 but Universal is giving us this new movie earlier than I could have hoped for!

What is Reminders of Him about?

Kenna Rowan made a tragic mistake — and has just served five years in prison for it. When she finally returns home to her now four-year-old daughter, Kenna realizes just how much her mistake cost her, and wonders if she'll ever be able to redeem herself.

Bar owner Ledger is one of the only people who hasn't cut Kenna out, and as they form a connection, they realize their blossoming romance could risk everything.

Fans of the book are thrilled that this book is being adapted for the big screen. "I loved it. Cried a lot and I’m happy it’s also getting an adaptation!" one user wrote on Reddit, while another added, "I was captivated from the very beginning. It was a great book for me."

A third says, "Overall I loved the book, the ending was perfect, I wouldn’t change anything. But it was very predictable." Hey, sometimes we need a predictable happy ending!

Who's in the Reminders of Him cast?

Eugene Gologursky/Getty Images for Paramount+

Actress Maika Monroe (Longlegs) will star in Reminders of Him, and it looks like she's be playing the lead role of Kenna Rowan.

Who are the characters in Reminders of Him?

We're still waiting to hear the full Reminders of Him cast, but here's a rundown of the book characters:

  • Kenna Rowan: our lead character who spent five years in prison and longs to reconnect with her daughter Diem.

  • Scotty Landry: Diem's father and Kenna's first love.

  • Grace Landry: Diem's paternal grandmother and guardian.

  • Benji Ward: Ledger's father.
  • Robin Ward: Ledger's mother.

Is Reminders of Him steamy?
