How to Turn a Thrift Store Skirt into a Party Dress

B+C readers, if you haven’t learned by now, I am a huge fan of repurposing thrift store finds. Thrift stores are so cheap and carry items that have so much potential. (And it’s worth noting that they also have a lot of amazing things that don’t need any DIYing.) We came across this basic black maxi skirt and decided to turn it into a maxi dress with a sequin (yas we love sequins!) halter top. I would suggest having a basic knowledge of sewing before tackling this project. You need to know how to take body measurements, sew with elastic and alter a garment for a perfect fit. Remember to share your creations with us using the hashtag #iamcreative.

Materials:

– black maxi skirt

– sequin fabric

– leather cord

– craft paper

Tools:

– sewing machine

– fabric scissors and regular scissors

– sewing pins

– measuring tape

– pen and chalk

Instructions:

1. Jot down measurements of the length of your torso, width of your bust, width of your waist and length of an appropriate V-neck.

2. Create a pattern following the picture below.

3. Cut out your pattern and trace onto sequin fabric using chalk. Then cut out the fabric to create your halter top.

4. Fold over the edges of the fabric that will be the top of the halter top (the part that forms the V) and sew in place. Be sure there is enough room to file your leather cord through the folds.

5. Pin the bottom center of the halter top to the center of the waist of the maxi skirt. Stretch the skirt and then let go, allowing the sequin fabric underneath to ripple/pleat. Pin in place.

6. Fold the remaining bottom edge of the sequin halter top around the back of the skirt and pin in place. Our dress has an open back, so these pieces won’t touch in the middle of the backside of the skirt.

7. Sew the fabric onto the skirt by stretching the elastic waist band with your non-dominant hand while you feed the fabric through the machine with your dominant hand.

8. Feed the leather cord through the loops on the top of the halter. Scrunch the sequin fabric along the leather, then sew the leather cord in place.

Fold a piece of craft paper in half to start creating your pattern. Measure the height of your torso, width of your bust, width of your waist and appropriate length for a V-neck. We crafted this piece as a backless halter top, so when measuring our waist we took the measurement from where one “back dimple” would be to the other “back dimple.” This will allow the fabric to wrap around the back without too much side boob ;) Go ahead and jot these down on a piece of paper — you don’t want to forget them!

Start creating your pattern by marking your measured torso length on the folded edge of the paper. Pro tip: Since this paper is folded in half, you will need to divide your waist and chest measurement by two. At the bottom of your torso mark, start the horizontal mark for your waist measurement. Draw in your chest measurement about halfway down your torso measurement. Finally, finish by adding your V-neck measurement on a diagonal, ending near the line of your chest measurement.

Your finished pattern should look similar to this. The top width of the triangle pattern should measure about 2-3 inches. Create the outer edge by drawing a diagonal line that hits all marked measurements. Cut out the pattern and hold it up to your body. Adjust accordingly before moving on to your sequin fabric.

Once you have the perfect pattern, trace it onto the sequin fabric using chalk.

Cut out your piece from the sequin fabric. Save all the sequin clippings for confetti :)

Fold the top edge over, pin and sew to create loops for the halter ties.

Pin the center of the skirt’s waistband to the bottom center of the halter pattern.

Stretch the skirt out to its full potential while it is on top of the sequin fabric.

Let go of the elastic and watch the sequin fabric bunch up. Pin the edge of the skirt to the fabric, leaving the newly formed ripples in place.

Once you’ve pinned the front side in place, fold the rest of the sequin halter top around and onto the back and pin.

Time to sew! You need to stretch the elastic of your skirt with your non-dominant hand while you feed the fabric through with your dominant hand. This will allow the fabric to stretch with the elastic.

Feed the leather cord through the loop on the halter top strap. Bunch the sequin fabric to create ruching and then sew the leather cord in place.

Ahhhh, a sequin maxi dress for all of our sequin dreams.

Bedazzled and ready for NYE :) Add matching metallic accessories to tie the outfit together.

Make sure you try on your dress before the big night and tailor any parts that don’t fit perfectly.

And that’s all, folks! Happy holidays from the B+C gang :)

This article has been updated from a previous post.

The entire world fell in love with Pedro Pascal during The Last of Us and The Mandalorian, and even though we won't see him as Reed Richards in the Fantastic 4until next summer, there is PLENTY of content to go around. He's always fangirling over someone's nails or hyping up his family, and Connie Nielsen explaining how Pedro made her feel special on the Gladiator 2 set makes me love him even more (which I didn't know was possible).

Keep reading to see what Connie Nielsen had to say about working with Pedro Pascal on Gladiator 2. TBH, It just might restore your faith in men.

Gladiator 2 follows Paul Mescal's Lucius, who's determined to bring down General Acacius (Pedro Pascal), who he considers responsible for his loss. Connie plays Pedro's onscreen wife Lucilla, and when asked what it was like to share scenes with him, she reveals she felt "really feminine around him."

"He's a protector in a way, and I'm not always used to that," she tells Good Morning America. "So it was kind of special to have that feeling that he was a guy who's protective and kind and just [a] very loving kind of person."

The actress also spilled on how "you can just tell he has this joy and, at the same time, you can also sense that he's been through stuff that's been hard and I just really love a person who responds to what has been hard in life with joy."

Pedro Pascal has been vocal about his family fleeing Chile in the 1970s, and how his parents had to "go into hiding for about six months," and it's clear Connie's proud of the man he's become. "He doesn't become caustic or, you know, entitled," she continues. "He's the least entitled man, always nice to everyone on set. Just a sweetheart of a guy."

Is someone cutting onions?!

For his part, Pedro loved working with Connie too, and, when asked what it was like working together, Pedro immediately responds with, "Power couple."

"We just dove right in," he continues, joking that he "made sure Connie understood that I was her man."

Pedro Pascal always seems to have an encouraging comment or joke ready to make everyone laugh, and revealed to Entertainment Weekly that during an intense battle scene, he actually tripped and landed at Paul Mescal's feet.

"I was running off the drawbridge, and they kind of dressed it with some dust so that when it slams against the fortified wall, there's a big puff of smoke," he says. "And I'm charging off the drawbridge and jumping over the wall, and I slip. I literally bounce off the drawbridge on my —ss and land splat in front of Paul's feet on the first take." Naturally, he followed up with, "Are you not entertained?"

Are you excited to see Connie Nielsen and Pedro Pascal in Gladiator 2? If you're still thinking about the Roman Empire, read up on what What Paul Mescal Had To Say About Gladiator 3.

When it comes to New Year's Eve celebrations, the first thought that probably springs to mind is boozing it up with an NYE cocktail. And while there's nothing wrong with sipping some bubbly (if that's your inclination), those of us who prefer to keep thingsnon-alc may feel like there are no New Year's-appropriate activities for our preferences. We say that nothing could be further from the truth! Whether you're pregnant, abstaining, or just taking a break from the booze, here are 10 fun ideas for ringing in 2024, the sober way.

Attend A Silent Disco

A few years ago, just as the sober-curious movement was gaining steam, companies like Daybreaker brought 6 a.m. sober dance parties to the masses. In a similar vein are remote silent discos – events where you put your headphones on and dance it out to the music of world-class DJs right in the comfort of your own home (or in person, if you feel like venturing out).

A quick Google search will reveal that there are tons of options to shake it off on New Year's Eve, whether remotely or in-person in your city. Because silent discos have an alternative vibe, they're much more sober-friendly than traditional clubs and dance parties.

Make A Tea Bar

Photo by Jill Wellington / PEXELS

If you've ever been to a party where they had aProsecco bar or something similar, you know how fun themed bars can be. Why not make a NA equivalent with a tea bar? We're not just talking about hot water and tea bags... include exciting staples like bubble tea, kombucha, Southern-style sweet iced tea, and more!

Do A Goal-Setting Ritual

Not in the mood to party this year? Celebrate the New Year with some introspection by doing a goal-setting ritual. You can design the ritual in whatever manner you like, but we recommend something along the lines of:

  • Light a candle and sit quietly for a few minutes.
  • Whip out your journal and take inventory of the last year: What were your best memories? What are you grateful for? Where do you think you could've improved?
  • In your journal (we have some killer prompts to start you off), mindfully list out your goals for 2024. They don't have to be New Year's resolutions, exactly, but include small steps you can take in the new year to help you achieve your goals!

Make A 2023 Scrapbook

Before New Year's Eve, head to your local craft store and pick up some supplies for making an old-fashioned scrapbook. Print out some photos from your most treasured memories of the year (we like printing with Walgreens), and gather any magazines you purchased or journal entries you wrote.

You can also look up some news headlines that made an impact on you, and print out the article as well as photos of any notable celebs or politicians who made the news. On New Year's eve, put together a scrapbook of what made 2023, 2023.

Good, bad, or otherwise, the year was one to remember — so create a momento that will help you re-live the past year in the years to come.

Plan A Costume Party

Believe it or not, masquerade balls, dressing up in costumes, and concealing one's identity have a long history in the historical celebrations of Christmastime. So we think a New Year's costume party is a fully appropriate idea for a sober New Year's Eve.

Who needs booze to have fun when you can dress up as whoever you want for a night of merriment and mystery?

Karaoke It Up

Photo by Mikhail Nilov / PEXELS

Another fun party pastime that's fun with or without booze? Singing! Grab some friends for a sober karaoke night either at your house or a private karaoke room. The singing's bound to be better than it would be if you were imbibing... who knows, maybe you'll steal the show with your rendition of "I'm Just Ken."

Cook A Fancy Meal

Whether you're spending the evening with your S/O or your BFF, cook a fancydinner for two. New Year's Eve is the perfect time to get fancy with food, so use this opportunity to ring in 2024 with only the finest cuisine. Don't forget to make a mocktail to go with!

Host A Game Night

Bring all your besties over and host a board game night that's sure to be one for the books. Have everyone bring their favorite game – from Cards Against Humanity to Codenames – for a riotous evening that will remind you that you absolutely don't need booze to have a rowdy night of laughter!

Play 2023 Trivia

Photo by Askar Abayev / PEXELS

Before New Year's Eve, compile a long list of trivia questions about 2023. Alternatively, have a friend do it for you, or do a quick Google search... there are a lot of trivia quizzes out there. On the big night, gather your squad together to see how much you remember about 2023. The results may surprise you!

Host A Murder-Mystery Dinner

Image via Amazon

Murder-mystery dinners are still one of the best ways to facilitate a heart-racing and mind-boggling party. Pick up one of the many murder mystery dinner kits out there and have your besties over for a night of thinking on your toes — to be fair, it's probably best to skip the booze for this idea anyway, for the sake of your mental acuity.

Zendaya and Robert Pattinson are currently filming the upcomingA24 film, The Drama, and it's a pair I didn't know I needed! I'm so pumped to see the two of them front and center in the new movie, and not just because the Massachusetts location is giving MAJOR New England autumn vibes. The actors have been spotted walking around the city, hanging out outside an art museum, and even getting into a road rage altercation? Yeah, that definitely sounds like drama to me.

Keep reading for every little detail you need to know about Robert Pattinson and Zendaya's new A24 movie The Drama.

What movie is Robert Pattinson and Zendaya in together?

The Drama Plot

Zendaya and Robert Pattinson's The Drama comes from the mind of Kristoffer Borgli, who most recently directed Dream Scenario starring Nicholas Cage. Borgli is slated to work alongside Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen’s production company Square Peg for the film, so I'm sure it'll be just as thought-provoking and thrilling as some of the other projects they’ve produced (Midsommar, Beau is Afraid, Death of a Unicorn).

Given Zendaya and Pattinson’s respective star power, I know this upcoming A24 project is going to be absolutely stunning. Even though we don't have any specific plot details yet, Deadline reported that The Drama tells the story of a couple whose romance takes a (you guessed it) dramatic turn right before their “big day.” Tell me more!!

One thing we do know is that a scene will apparently feature Zendaya's character getting into an altercation with a car while on a walk. The actress went viral for throwing a drink at a passing car, and she's so convincing, one TikTok user said "help i thought this was real for a second i was like omg what is going on."

Who else is in The Drama movie cast?

The Drama Cast

In addition to Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, we'll see Mamoudou Athie and Alana Haim. Stay tuned for more cast updates.

What else has Zendaya been up to?

Clive Brunskill / Getty Images

Zendaya currently boasts two Emmys from her work in HBO’sEuphoria and has only continued to exhibit her talents in recent feature titles like Dune: Part Two and Challengers. Plus she's finally reuniting with BF Tom Holland in Spider-Man 4and Christopher Nolan's brand new film. Busy gal!

What about Rob?

Alberto E. Rodriguez / Getty Images for CinemaCon

Of course, we all know and love Pattinson for his role as Edward in the Twilight movies, but he’s positioned himself as a truly versatile actor with roles in 2022’s The Batman and Bong Joon Ho’s upcoming sci-fi film, Mickey 17.

Mike Coppola / Getty Images, Francois Durand / Getty Images

The two stars are still in early talks about starring in the film, but Deadline has confirmed that The Drama is a “top priority” at A24 given the success with 2023’s Dream Scenario. And, like, DUH!
