What You Need to Know About Kate Middleton’s Pregnancy Condition, Hyperemesis Gravidarum

You may have been hearing the words “hyperemesis gravidarum” more than a lot lately, thanks to one very royal pregnancy. Kate Middleton is expecting again, and — like with her other pregnancies — she has hyperemesis gravidarum. Rocking a queasy tummy along with all the other pregnancy symptoms isn’t exactly out of the norm, but Middleton’s goes way beyond typical morning sickness. Whether you’re on (or trying for) your first pregnancy or adding to your brood, here’s what you need to know about this condition.

1. Weight Loss: Sure, morning sickness is annoying: It’s totally obnoxious to vomit a few times a day. But hyperemesis gravidarum is a beast of a different sort. Instead of gaining weight (like pregnant people should), women with this condition actually lose it, according to OB/GYN and maternal fetal medicine physician Dr. Kecia Gaither. The weight loss can be significant — Dr. Gaither notes that it’s “on average a 10-20+ pound weight loss.”

2. Nausea Plus: That rocky, seasick feeling you have with regular morning sickness goes on steroids with hyperemesis gravidarum. With this condition, Dr. Gaither says, you can have “protracted nausea and vomiting — the inability to keep solids and liquids down over a number of days to weeks.”

3. Long-Term Symptoms: For most people, morning sickness waves a fond farewell after the first trimester. The same can’t be said for its wicked cousin hyperemesis gravidarum. The nausea and vomiting experienced with this condition can last for your whole pregnancy: Yes, that’s all three trimesters.

4. Dehydration Dilemma: One of the major dangers of hyperemesis gravidarum is dehydration. If you aren’t keeping liquids down, your body can’t hydrate itself. Dr. Gaither explains that this condition can result in electrolyte abnormalities as well as vitamin deficiencies.

5. Hospitalization Happens: You may remember news reports of the Duchess of Cambridge being treated in the hospital for dehydration and related issues. While hyperemesis gravidarum doesn’t equal a hospital stay in every case, some women who are suffering serious effects from the condition will need inpatient treatment. “Hospitalization is recommended with unrelenting nausea and vomiting, dehydration, marked weight loss, electrolyte abnormalities, nervous system dysfunction, and when evidence of renal/liver impairment are present,” Dr. Gaither tells us.

6. At-Home Remedies: If, and only if, your medical provider says it’s okay to hang at home, relax, and see how it goes, you can try eating unsalted crackers, soups/broths, or ginger tea. These are easy on your stomach and may provide some relief. Never attempt to medicate yourself when you’re experiencing this upgraded form of morning sickness — whether it’s naturally (meaning herbal supplements) or via anything else. Hyperemesis gravidarum is serious business and requires a medical provider’s help and supervision.

7. Doctor’s Orders: When the nausea and vomiting won’t stop and nothing helps, Dr. Gaither recommends seeking medical attention ASAP. If you’re holding back because you would rather not check in to the hospital, don’t worry. It’s possible that your doctor will prescribe an antiemetic drug (these help to stop nausea and vomiting) before recommending hospitalization. You’ll only go to inpatient care if it’s really needed to ensure the safety of yourself and your baby — in which case you really don’t want to be waiting things out at home.

After revealing her cancer diagnosis back in March, Kate Middleton just announced she's finally finished her nine-month long chemotherapy treatment. Instead of releasing a written statement or an Instagram post, Middleton shared an emotional, gorgeous video featuring her entire family. It's a serene celebration of her loving family as they take the next steps in her cancer journey together. Here's what the Princess of Wales said.

  • Kate Middleton announced her cancer diagnosis in March 2024 after stepping back from public life.
  • She also says she has "a renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life" after completing chemotherapy.
  • And royal author Robert Jobson says she's "doing very well" as we enter the holiday 2024 season!

What's the latest update on Kate Middleton?

Kate Middleton has finished chemotherapy and it appears she's doing "very well," which we're so thankful for! "From what I understand, Catherine is doing very well," royal author Robert Jobson says in an interview withHello!. "She is back training at the gym and doing all the things she wanted to do."

After Kate stepped back from public view, and the internet went crazy over her supposed disappearance, Robert seems to feel confident she's ready to reenter public life. "I do think that we will start to see a lot more of her, and that she will carry out engagements as well as continuing to work behind the scenes," he says.

Prince William also offered a look into Kate's recovery journey before the Earthshot Prize awards on November 6, telling British journalists (via People) that “She's doing really well thanks. And hopefully, she is watching tonight. So cheering me on.”

“She's been amazing this whole this whole year," he continues. "I know she will be really keen to see tonight be a success."

We're sending Kate Middleton and the rest of the Royal Family so much love!

This three minute video packs in a lot of love — and a lot of life – after such a grim circumstance for the beloved royal family. Middleton opens with what a relief it is to announce that she's finished her chemo treatment, and continues by explaining, "The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown."

The Princess of Wales elaborates that cancer is "complex, scary, and unpredictable," especially for friends and family. She says, ""This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved."

Middleton says that her main goal is to remain cancer-free, and continue on her long healing journey. She plans to "each day as it comes," while also hoping to join some public engagements in the future. She says, "Despite all that has gone before, I enter this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life."

The Princess wraps up her statement by saying that she and Prince William are "grateful" for everyone's enduring support, noting that the overall graciousness and kindness has been "truly humbling." She says, "To all those who are continuing their own cancer journey – I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand. Out of darkness, can come light, so let that light shine bright."

Clive Brunskill/Getty Images

Throughout her contemplative statement, the video features gorgeous shots of the entire family out in nature, splashing through the beach, walking through a nature trail, and just generally being together. With three grown, yet still young, children, this family vibrancy resonates deeply, reminding us all to hold those we love closely.

We're so thrilled for Princess Kate, and the entire family, on this incredible health milestone, and we continue to wish them well!

When did Kate Middleton get cancer?

Kate Middleton officially announced her cancer diagnosis back in March of 2024. The Princess never explicitly stated what kind of cancer she's battling, only that she was in the midst of a thorough treatment plan.

Back in January of that same year, Middleton underwent abdominal surgery that many assume is associated with the diagnosis at hand. After the described "successful" surgery, Kensington Palace stated that Middleton wished that her "personal medical information" remained "private." They further explained that the public would get updates "when there is significant new information to share."

The next update we received was the March video, explaining Princess Kate's cancer diagnosis, leading us to believe that each incident is tied together.

Regardless, it's great to hear that the Princess of Wales has officially completed her chemotherapy treatment as of today!

More of a horror lover than a holiday movie fanatic? You might agree that nothing beats an old school slashers. I Know What You Did Last Summer, which stars Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Freddie Prinze Jr., premiered in 1997, combines everything we love about coming of age movies — friends, summer vacation, and drama — with just enough terror to send a chill down your spine. And just like the original, the new I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot features some of the hottest names in Hollywood.

  • A new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel is coming to theaters almost 30 years after the original.
  • The cast includes Lola Tung, Madelyn Cline, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols, Gabbriette, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King, and Chase Sui Wonders.
  • Plot details are being kept under wraps but we know Freddie Prinze Jr. will reprise his role, meaning we can expect an expansion of the original movie.

'I Know What You Did Last Summer' Cast

Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols, and Gabbriette are the most recent additions to the I Know What You Did Last Summer cast, which also includes Outer Banks’ Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King, and Chase Sui Wonders.

Plus, fans of the OG movie will be excited to know Freddie Prinze Jr. will reprise his role from the original movie — and Jennifer Love Hewitt is also in talks to return!

'I Know What You Did Last Summer' Plot

Columbia Pictures

In I Know What You Did Last Summer, four friends are terrorized by a man with a hook after they hit him with their car and try to cover it up. In the recent TV adaptation, which features 6 friends, the group accidentally runs over one of their own.

The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot is sure to feature another hit-and-run with a juicy Gen Z twist. Do Revenge's Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is directing and co-writing alongside Sam Lansky. According to The Hollywood Reporter, who broke the casting news, the movie will take the same approach as the Scream reboot, mixing the original film's cast with the next generation of stars. So while the movie will cater to fans of the original, it's not a copy and paste reboot.

'I Know What You Did Last Summer' Release Date

Columbia Pictures

The new reboot will tentatively hit theaters July 18, 2025. I'm already prepping for next year's Slasher Summer!

Let us know what you're excited to see in the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot on Facebook!

Olivia Munn bared it all in her latest SKIMS ad, proving you don't have to hide your scars. The actress posed in a campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, supporting Susan G. Komen®and highlighting her own journey with the disease. She looked absolutely stunning in every photo, but the most gorgeous moment was the way Munn didn't shy away from showing her mastectomy scars. She spoke to TODAY about her experience during the shoot, and why she ultimately decided to ditch her insecurities. Here's what she had to say!

SKIMS

Munn shared with TODAYthat she didn't initially plan to show her scars on the set. The campaign was focused on her recovery post-breast cancer diagnosis, but the makeup artist had a hard time covering up the scars throughout the shoot. She explained that she took a look in the mirror and thought, "I’m done being insecure about my scars." From there, she took the idea to show them off to the SKIMS team — and the rest is history.

SKIMS

And while she was scared to be so vulnerable on camera, this was ultimately a really empowering move for Munn. She elaborated that there are "so many women that have these same scars" who feel just as insecure as she did about them — and she really hopes those women see this ad. "Skims is so iconic and associated with beauty and sex appeal, and cancer really doesn't have that same connotation," she said. "So I just really hope that other women who have gone through my same path feel a little better after seeing it."

SKIMS

The star also took to Instagram to give a behind-the-scenes explanation of her experience. She reiterated that she was "done being insecure" about her scars. "Every mark life has left behind on my body is proof of how hard I fought," she wrote. "I hope other women who have been self-conscious about their scars see these photos and feel all the love I’m sending."

She also shared that SKIMS will donate 10% of their bra sales (except bralettes) to Susan G. Komen® — a charity dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer — from October 23-31 in stores and online. "It’s really meaningful to be part of an initiative that supports research and helps countless individuals impacted by breast cancer," she said.

SKIMS

All of this comes on the heels of Munn's announcement earlier this year that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She revealed the diagnosis came after recently tested negatively for well-known breast cancer genes and had normal results from her annual mammogram — but her doctor to check her Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score. The test showed Munn had a 37% risk of breast cancer, so she pushed for more answers that eventually lead to her diagnosis.

Since then, Munn shared with PEOPLE that she had 4 surgeries in 10 months and underwent medically-induced menopause — all the while juggling being a new mom with husband John Mulaney. She shared, "I'm lucky. We caught it with enough time that I had options. I want the same for any woman who might have to face this one day."

SKIMS

After that March announcement, it's clear Munn is dedicated to raising awareness for women's health — and particularly their options. While chatting about the SKIMS campaign, Munn told TODAY, "You've got to go your doctor and you inundate them with information and you don't stop until they give you the test you need."

If you want to test your own risk for breast cancer, the National Institute of Health has resources here.
