These 5 Girls Just Received the Best Creativity Prize Ever

Today’s the day folks! Re:Make 2015 has officially begun! In addition to picking up some serious creativity knowledge from the industry’s best and brightest, today’s also a major day because we get to finally announce the selected recipient of our #IAMCREATIVE Foundation. But spoiler alert: there isn’t just one, there’s FIVE! Because, with so many talented ladies doing such awesome stuff, how could we ever pick just one?!

If you haven’t heard about our #IAMCREATIVE Foundation yet, let us fill you in. Back in June we announced that we’d be offering grants between $2,500 and $15,000 to help kickstart super stellar creative projects by women. We looked for ladies (or girls – you could apply as young as 13) who were starting a business, developing an innovative gadget or app or maybe even doing something great for their community. We received nearly 400 applications, but somehow we and our board of advisors (some of which include: Lauren Conrad, Rebecca Minkoff and the CEO of Crayola) managed to narrow that number down to five stellar candidates who we feel certain are about to do amazing things. Scroll on down to learn all about our fist #IAMCREATIVE winners and what they plan to do with their winnings.

Ashton Masek: Hello + Co

At just 13-year-old Ashton is our youngest winner. She’s the founder of Hello + Co, a company comprised of girls ranging in age from seven to 13 who re-do furniture and create handmade prints and stationery. Ashton, whose Christmas list includes a sander and a drill, plans to use her winnings to combine those things into a line of matching prints and decor: she wants to create custom furniture pieces with custom prints. The two will share a color scheme that’s meant to be cohesive and totally makeover a room.

Q: How do you split your time between school and Hello + Co?

“Sports was a big thing I had to split my time with but now that I’m hurt (Ashton was rocking crutches at Re:Make), that frees up a lot of time. School is from 8AM-5PM — counting homework time — so I have a two-hour window that I usually spend making things, and then the weekends for sure!”

Are there any brands + makers that you look to for inspiration?

“Oh, for sure! I like a lot of Australian-based brands like Poppies For Grace. It’s just so bright and cheery and fun! I also really like Knot and Bow, Ampersand Studio.”

Kristin Shearon: Havok Designs

Kristin is the founder of Havok Designs, an online shop that sells custom-made, laser cut wooden jewelry, fashion accessories, art + home decor along with eco-friendly cork wallets, tote bags, and accessories. Kristin’s business has already been up and running for three years, but she wants to broaden her capabilities by upgrading to a larger, more powerful laser cutter that will allow her to create larger wall hangings, cut through more materials and expand her product base.

Q: How did you first get into laser cutting?

“I had just graduated with my graphic design degree and was looking for something to do on my own. My husband dabbles in woodworking as a hobby thing and we decided to purchase a laser engraver. Once we got it I kind of took it over and made it my baby and started designing wood, home decor and jewelry and it took off from there.”

What would you say to people who are interested in learning laser cutting but intimidated by the idea?

“Just try it! If you can design something you can laser cut something. I have no mechanical skills and I work on the machine all the time.”

Ristina Gooden: Sugar Hippo Bakery

Ristina is an Ohio resident who’s finding a way to make baking her professional occupation. With her grant, she’s going to open Sugar Hippo Bakery, which will be a wholesale baking company located in Columbus, OH. Ristina also plans to uses local ingredients to create her sweet treats. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds made at Sugar Hippo Bakery will be used to “give some sugar” to women and children in shelters to help brighten up their day.

Q: What is one recipe you think every baker should know?

“Everyone should have a strong chocolate chip cookie recipe. There should be a go-to – that’s my one thing if someone is coming over I’ll stir it up real quick and throw it in the oven. Everyone likes walking into a house and smelling freshly made cookies. Plus you can always add some vanilla ice-cream!”

What aspect of starting this business are you most excited about?

“I’m super excited about helping and empowering other women. I like to think about this as we’re on a human mission to bring back that human element to women and children in shelters. We want to make sure we’re bringing that to them so they feel special on their special days.”

Jane Li: Walkinthese

When Jane was in high-school, she really wanted to buy a new pair of shoes. Her parents told her she already owned too many, so instead she got creative and painted a pair. After rocking them at school, a small business emerged. Jane is now a student at USC and already has a fully functioning website where she sells her hand-painted shoes. What she wants to do next is open up pop-up studios where people can come and create their own sneakers (think: Color Me Mine for shoes). Jane hopes to eventually open a mobile store or permanent space that will include a community element by allowing local artists to join a consignment program where they would be able to sell their own hand-painted shoes.

Q: What is your favorite pair of shoes that you’ve ever designed?

“My galaxy shoes! My sister always does this, she told me ‘that just looks like paint splatters on your shoes!’ But then I finished and they turned out really nice. I’m wearing them today! I also really liked the ones I made of the San Francisco skyline and a pair I made about Toy Story. Buzz Lightyear is on one foot and Woody’s on the other and on the bottom I wrote Andy so it was like the real thing.”

What supplies would you suggest as a kind of starter kit for people who want to paint shoes?

“I started off really cheap with Dollar Store brushes and fabric markers. I started with fabric markers because it’s easier to draw if you’re not good with brushes yet. Once you get more comfortable you can start mixing colors and customizing more.”

Rabiah Harris: Urban Tech Fashionistas

Rabiah is a teacher at Kelly Miller Middle School in DC where they currently have an after-school program that teaches kids to work with modern technology devices like: Makey Makey, Squishy Circuits and video game design. The program has been wildly successful since it started back in 2013, but Rabiah admits that many of the students involved are male.

There is another teacher who runs a similar course that focuses on fashion but that teacher will soon be leaving the school. Rabiah is planning to combine these two afterschool programs into one tech-minded fashion course called Urban Tech Fashionistas. Students will brainstorm what they would like to create and then be taught technologies that relate to their interests. Rabiah also hopes to pull in experts to talk to the students via Skype and IRL to give feedback on the kids’ designs.

What skills are you planning on teaching in the Urban Tech Fashionista program?

So, the fashionistas will learn 3D modeling and printing, how to use and create with e-textiles and Arduino programming. My hope is that they will continue to push me to introduce new technologies and be empowered to learn some on their own

What aspect of the program are you most excited about?

I am MOST excited about getting the raw materials in my fashionistas hands! We’ve had a couple of sessions already (hoping that we would be chosen) and there is a lot of excitement and new learning happening. I want that to continue daily.

Rabiah was teaching during the big announcement at Re:Make — we hope here students are as proud of her as we are!

All of these ladies will be updating us on their creative journey, so be sure to check the #iamcreative tag to find out how all their various adventures are going!

Imagine a colorful world with all of your female idols speaking, creative workshops everywhere you turn, food that will make you salivate, must-see music performances and, most importantly, dozens of ‘grammable moments all around.

Historically, we’ve brought Brit + Co to life annually with Re:Make, a two-day event we’ve hosted in San Francisco attended by nearly 15,000 women.

But this year, we’re trying something new called #CreateGood! Not only will we be visiting our friends on the East Coast, but we’re also switching up the format. Instead of two days, we’ll be live for FIVE.

That’s right. This year Brit + Co will be hosting a new type of event in NYC from October 4th through 8th in the heart of SoHo: a fully immersive digital program culminating in a five-day pop-up experience with the theme of #CreateGood.

Our goal for #CreateGood is to enable women to walk away feeling like a more creative and confident version of themselves through speakers, workshops, live performances, and more. We want to show the GOOD women can achieve in all areas of their life, from good food to good style to good work and good minds.

We chose this theme because we believe it’s the right moment in time to pause and consider how we, as women, can both do good for the world, but also for ourselves.

Beyond all that, like all B+C events, we promise that there will be confetti, balloons, and color… SO MUCH COLOR. So make sure to bring your phone, because you’ll definitely want to take part in all the photo-worthy moments we’re creating.

Can’t make it to NYC in the fall? No worries. While we’d love to see you IRL, we totally understand you’ve got a busy schedule, girl. That’s why all #CreateGood content will be streamed to our audience across Brit + Co social channels for a fully digital experience. So, make sure to like and follow us STAT ;)

Stay tuned over the coming months as we share more details of our next-level lineup of activities, performers, and speakers joining us. Want to be the first to know? Sign up for our #CreateGood newsletterHERE.

Can’t wait to see y’all there!

xo, Brit

Fans of Fourth Wing are on pins and needles because Rebecca Yarros just announced she's finished writing the third book in the Empyrean series! It's us, we're fans — along with over half of BookTok.

We can't believe we're getting closer to reading more about Violet Sorrengail's journey, but we know you have a ton of burning questions about the release date for Book No. 3.

We may not have all the answers, but we've done a little digging to share as much as we can because who doesn't want to know what Rebecca Yarros has been up to?

I'm new to the Empyrean series. Are "Fourth Wing" and "Iron Flame" really worth reading?

Amazon

I'm not going to lie to you. The editorial team, including myself, are extremely biased about Fourth Wingand Iron Flame. From my perspective, I think these are great books for anyone who had the pleasure of growing up during the great Harry Potter era and moved on to watchingGame of Thrones and House of Dragons.

Did she announce the name of book no. 3?

Rebecca Yarros/Instagram

YES! Book No. 3 is titled Oynx Storm.

Knowing what we do about the manifestation of Violet's powers, I think this could hint she's going to play an even larger role in the series. According to a fan theory shared on TikTok(via Empyrean Riders), it's believed that Violet and Xaden Riorson are actually gods. Stay with me here.

Empyrean Riders noted that Violet's last name means heavenly and that she's able to control time thanks to her connection to the young dragon Andarna (I love her so much!). That sounds pretty god-like to me.

And when asked which two Taylor Swift songs describe Onyx Storm, Rebecca Yarros chose "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" from The Tortured Poets Department and "So It Goes..." from Reputation. "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" is one of Taylor's most powerful songs and definitely translates the idea that Violet's powers are going to be stronger than ever, while "So It Goes..." is equal parts suspense and seduction, and is TOTALLY about "all the pieces fall right into place" to get together with the right person.

There's so much more to unpack so I suggest grabbing a yummy snack while you fall down the rabbit hole. All I'm sure of is that Onyx Storm is going to leave our emotions in shambles just like Fourth Wing and Iron Flame did.

When did Rebecca Yarros announce she's done writing book no. 3 in the series?

Rebecca Yarros/Instagram

On June 17, Rebecca Yarros shared this image of her laptop to indicate she'd finished the third book in the Empyrean series.

She wrote, "(Pic from one of the very many locations in which this book was written)," towards the end of the caption before adding a few relevant hashtags to it.

When will Onxy Storm be available for purchase?

Rebecca Yarros/Instagram

Rebecca Yarros exclusively told Good Morning America that fans can expect the book to hit shelves January 21, 2025! That gives us a little over six months to prepare our emotions for what's sure to be a storm of a book.

She said, "There will be politics, new adventures, old enemies and of course, dragons." There's no way she could forget the dragons because I'd willingly riot over them. They deserve to have their stories told forever.

As luck would have it, Cosmopolitan received an exciting first look at what's to come in Onyx Storm. The excerpt begins with Violet realizing the Venin have found their way into Basgiath War College and are wreaking havoc. Alongside Rhiannon, Sawyer, and Ridoc, she races to stop the Venin from releasing Jack Barlowe from his prison cell.

However, Violet's shocked when she discovered one of the "dark wielders" has a long silver braid that closely resembles her own. Before she can fully react, the woman disappears. According to Screen Rant, there are possible theories about why Violet saw her and what this means for her growing power.

Towards the end of the excerpt, Violet discovers the Venin want to capture her too. Also, Xaden makes his long-awaited appearance and it's clear their playful banter in the face of danger hasn't changed. That he hasn't fully changed into the Venin Violet's used to seeing.

I officially can't wait to read the rest of the book in January!

Has Rebecca Yarros revealed the cover for Onyx Storm?

Today/Bree Archer, Elizabeth Turner Stokes for Entangled Publishing

Onyx Storm

Yes!

TODAY received an exclusive look at the cover for Onyx Storm and it doesn't disappoint! Unlike its predecessors, it appears Rebecca Yarros is hinting that darker events will take place.

Fans of the Empyrean series aren't the only ones who are excited to see what fate has in store for our favorite characters though. In a statement to TODAY, Rebecca revealed how elated she is to be working on the series again. "It's amazing to be back with these characters again. She also said, ""I can't wait for readers to see what Violet, Xaden, and the rest of the quadrant have in store for them in Onyx Storm!"

In case you missed it, last weekend was Brit + Co’s fourth annual Re:Make conference in San Francisco. One of our keynote speakers was a scholar, the founder of COURAGEWorks and the giver of one of the most inspirational TEDTalks of all time Dr. Brené Brown delivered a brilliant message about courage and vulnerability. Her quotes have been so inspiring, she recently collaborated with Sugarboo to launch The Brave Heart Gallery, which sells artworks of her quotes (also 20 percent of the proceeds go to a really good cause). Her most recent book RisingStrong explores how “falling gives us the power to write a daring new ending” and how processing the pain head on is can be strength. And according to Brené, when it comes being a creative woman, though not everything you do will be a success, daring to do it anyway is deeply important.

Being a creative in this day and age can at times be daunting — uncertainty about job security, the fear of rejection and staying in love with your passion after it becomes your job can be more than enough to turn people away. “When your vocation becomes your occupation, there’s always a little shift, so you have to protect it,” Brené tells us. “You have to keep the love alive so it doesn’t become just another thing you have to do, because then you can’t put the magic in it.”

And for creative women, we face an additional catalog of hurdles. “Creativity is kind of revealing a part of our soul, and we live in a pretty hostile environment,” Brené says, “so I think it’s scary to put yourself out there when there are so many critics and cynics out there today. I think that’s what make creativity scary, and I think that’s what make it powerful.” Rising in the face of adversity is certainly a strong statement. As our FLOTUS put it, “When they go low, we go high.”

And when you put yourself out there — yes, sometimes you’re going to fail. That’s okay. What you have to be careful of is letting your failures define you. “One of the big life stages at mid-life, anywhere from mid-thirties to late-fifties, the big developmental life stage is integration. We bring home all the parts of ourselves that we have orphaned because we don’t they fit in with who we’re supposed to be, we call them all home and we say, ‘This is me. The good, the bad, the tough, the beautiful.’,” Brené tells us. “I think that’s the gift of being my age, I have a very sensitive bulls–t meter so if you haven’t called everything home and made peace with those parts of us that are hard, that’s hard to be around.” And being able to pick up again after your fall — or even forgiving yourself for lingering down there too long — is all part of the process.

Kate Winslet is THE Hollywood actress to me. Not only has she starred in box office smashes like Titanic and Avatar: Way of Water, but she's proven her acting chops in breakout indie flicks and provided mothers and daughters everywhere with eternal Christmas movie nights thanks to The Holiday. But the actress' consistently viral kindness, her dedication to embracing her natural beauty, and her sophistication don't mean she always feels confident. Kate Winslet just spilled on the one movie from her career that had her "sh—ing" herself, and I just had to dive in.

Here's what Kate Winslet had to say about her scariest movie experience ever.

  • Kate Winslet made a name for herself with Titanic, Sense & Sensibility, and The Holiday.
  • However those movies aren't the film she wants fans to ask about!
  • The actress spills on the movies she's proud of, and the one job that had her "sh—ing myself."

Talking to Vanity Fair for her newest film Lee, Kate Winslet revealed one project she wishes fans asked about more is Iris. The 2001 film stars Kate as a young Iris Murdoch against Judi Dench's older counterpart. And for Kate, nothing was more terrifying than working with such a wonderful actress.

"People don’t really ask me about Iris. It’s such a delicate film," she says. "It was the first thing I had done after having my daughter. Going to work with a baby, I’m playing Iris Murdoch, looking to Judi Dench’s older Iris Murdoch — I was sh—ting myself."

Considering how nervous I get when I meet my heroes, I can only imagine what it was like to meet Dame Judi Dench. Talk about a dream! Another film Kate loves is Revolutionary Road, and not just because she got to reunite with Leonardo DiCaprio.

"The thing that people say is, 'You got to work with Leo again.' Then they go off on the whole Leo tangent, which I totally understand," she says of the film, which follows an ambitious couple who find themselves trapped in the reality of 1950s suburbia. "But Revolutionary Road — f—king hell, it just knocked us all sideways. Unbelievably difficult material. I was very proud of that film and what Leo and I were able to create as Frank and April. It was so brutal."

The process for getting Lee into the world sounds equally brutal, considering Kate started working on it over a decade ago. As producer, Kate tells Vanity Fair she doesn't mind the fact she's done more for the film than if she only had an acting credit. "That has felt very necessary for this film. But it’s also just really important to me," she says. "It’s important to me that people know that it’s out there and might feel compelled to go and see it."

Because it turns out, commercial success or stardom on its own doesn't actually help your movie get made! "It doesn’t matter who you are," she says. "No one’s going to go, 'Oh, I’ll just back that pony because she was in Titanic.' It doesn’t happen that way, and I never expected that. That’s really important to say."

"I've gotten older and I’ve learned more and felt more confident in myself about whether or not I could actually do it," she adds. "It’s not something I would’ve done had I not felt so passionately about the subject, and Lee was just—she wouldn’t let me go."

Marvel movies are known for their heroes and their hopeful outlook on the world. But in 2025, we're getting a brand new team: the Thunderbolts. This team is made up of antiheroes and former villains, and it's sure to be the wackiest and strangest, as well as one of the most memorable, superhero movies we've seen in recent years.

Keep reading for the latest news on Thunderbolts* before it hits theaters in 2025.

Marvel Studios/YouTube

Thunderbolts* comes out this May, and the cast just showed off some brand new footage at the D23 convention — and thanks to the new 'Celebrating 85 Years' spot, we have the first look too!

We get a look at Bucky Barnes, The Red Guardian, John Walker, and Ghost. Plus, Yelena Belova, of course. This heartbreaking detail about Yelena's new look connects Florence Pugh's Yelena to Scarlett Johansson's Natashaand I'm WEEPING.

Marvel Studios/Walt Disney Studios

And at D23 Brazil, we got a brand new look at my new favorite team. "There’s something in this film, in terms of superpowers and superheroes, that shows that our superpowers lie in how ‘broken’ we are," David Harbour said at the event. "As if our superpowers came from our relationships.”

What is the plot of Thunderbolts?

Thunderbolts* Plot

Consider Thunderbolts* to be The Avengers' edgy younger sibling. The movie follows Yelena Belova (who we know off the bat is a "depressed assassin" thanks to a Marvel Studios press release). She's joined by Bucky Barnes, The Red Guardian, and John Walker. Based on a leak, it looks like we'll see this group of misfits team up against Valentina Allegra de Fontaine after she sends them on a deadly mission.

Thunderbolts* Cast

Thunderbolts* stars Florence Pugh, Geraldine Viswanathan, Lewis Pullman, Hannah John-Kamen, Wyatt Russell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sebastian Stan, and David Harbour.

This is a huge cast, and Viswanathan just revealed how crazy the first day of filming was. “My first day didn’t feel real," she tells Vanity Fair. "I felt this extra pressure of, ‘Know your lines, babe. You can’t really play around like you usually do.’"

Historically, sci-fi fans haven't been kind to actresses in their favorite projects (remember when Star Wars fans bullied Kelly Marie Tran off social media?). But Viswanathan is already thinking ahead. “If it’s overwhelming, I’ll log off. But I like discourse around pop culture,” she says. “[Thunderbolts*] felt a little bit edgier and fresher, more existential and dark.”

Jesse Grant/Disney

The rest of the cast also enjoyed working together. “Everyone is going to f—kin’ love me! It’s really, really, really fun to be with a group of actors that you have a good time with," Wyatt Russell says at Comic Con (via Variety), while David Harbour adds, “Florence Pugh [is] just electric to work with. There’s warmth and humor, but there’s also a lot of pathos.”

“This is why we can't stop laughing together, because we genuinely just had such a wonderful time with each other and we've loved working with one another," Pugh tells People. “I feel like this is something that we've never seen before from Marvel...it's a very open and honest and truthful idea. And I'm just really excited for people to watch it.”

Are you excited for this brand new chapter in the MCU? I really feel like Thunderbolts* will usher in a whole new generation of fans and I, for one, CANNOT WAIT! Let us know your thoughts on Facebook.
