This #GirlBoss Is Bringing Your Fave Brands to Your Doorstep for Free

We all want the best skincare products, makeup essentials and hair accessories. But before we throw down our hard-earned cash, it would be great to know what we’re getting for our money. Well, problem solved, thanks to Influenster, a community of social-savvy shoppers that sample and test products from their favorite brands. But what’s the catch? That’s the beauty. All you need to give up is your honest opinion of the products you’re trying. The #girlboss behind the startup is rad too. Read our interview with Elizabeth Scherle, co-founder and president of Influenster, and get ready to be seriously inspired.

B+C: What were you up to before co-founding Influenster?

ES: Before co-founding Influenster, I worked at an indie shopping event startup that helped brands distribute products to shoppers through goodie bags. The women at the events loved receiving the beauty freebies — who doesn’t? But we weren’t collecting any feedback on the products shoppers were trying. Simultaneously, my good friend and now co-founder, Aydin Acar, was at a traditional market research firm that was inefficient in collecting data from research studies. We put our heads together to come up with an innovative solution to modernize both the market research and product sampling markets to bridge that gap and fill a hole in the industry — and that’s how we co-founded Influenster!

B+C: So, Influenster connects savvy female shoppers with brands they love, in exchange for their honest feedback. Can you explain a little more about the company and its mission?

ES:Influenster.com and the Influenster app are all about product discovery. We enable our growing community of over two million socially savvy members to explore the latest products and get the advice they need to make informed purchases. Because who wants to waste money on an expensive face cream that doesn’t work?

Members use Influenster as a personal shopping companion by accessing over seven million unbiased product reviews and sharing their own opinions through reviews. They also come to Influenster for articles and videos that are pulled from what’s trending within the community — how-to articles, top 10 product roundups, video tutorials and more. By being active on Influenster, they can also qualify to receive complimentary full-sized products to test and review.

On Influenster, everyone’s opinions matter. Brands pay attention to every word that our members say. This is how we empower consumers and women to have their voices heard.

B+C: What’s the biggest problem Influenster solves for brands?

ES: In today’s digital age and cluttered marketplace, with consumers spending more time on their phones and social media than ever before, brands are having a hard time breaking through the noise. Plus, consumers are increasingly suspicious of ads and turn to product reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations to influence their shopping decisions. This is where Influenster steps in to give brands the edge they are looking for — connecting them directly with targeted consumers who in turn create meaningful conversations about their products.

B+C: What’s been your favorite brand partnership to date?

ES: That’s a tough one, as we’ve had many memorable partnerships that have turned into lifelong relationships! If I had to pick a recent one, it’d be our groundbreaking collaboration with Target on the launch of their new and improved fashion-forward C9 by Champion sports bras. I’ve always loved Target, so when their innovation team sought us out in their hunt to find a new, creative marketing solution to raise brand awareness for that upcoming product launch, it was a huge win, and I was pumped!

Members were obsessed over this campaign; we sent free C9 sports bras to fitness lovers who were challenged to show off their bras in workout action on social media. But we didn’t stop there — we opened up the C9 experience to thousands more members through a location-based digital coupon alert on our app. Members could earn a 40 percent discount on the C9 sports bras if they went in stores to find and scan the bras, scavenger-hunt style. Thousands of inspiring fitness posts were generated, reaching millions of consumers; even months after the campaign has ended, C9 by Champion is still buzzed about on social media as a trendy fitness brand!

B+C: You’re a female founder of a tech startup. Unfortunately, not words we hear together often. What’s been your biggest challenge?

ES: My biggest challenge as a founder — and not necessarily just as a female founder — was starting the company from scratch with no resources whatsoever. Unlike other startups, we didn’t have strong connections and didn’t raise money at the beginning — a rather unusual track for a startup to take.

We didn’t have experience starting a business, either. What we did have was an unwavering belief that there was a need for our business. So we were laser-focused in our efforts to sell the product and build brand relationships to lay a strong foundation for the startup, which was extremely difficult considering that Influenster was a new service with no proven track record. After countless rejections, we changed course and offered them the chance to test our services for free, even if it meant going into debt. Once we had that chance to prove ourselves, brands were not only sold, they kept coming back to Influenster and recommended us to other brands, as well!

B+C: Any opinions on STEM education and getting more young girls involved in tech earlier?

ES: It’s important to expose girls to different areas of STEM from a young age — from the toys they play with, to the extracurricular activities they are engaged in, to the heart of the classroom. Role models and mentors are also extremely critical to guide practical learning experiences and create comfortable environments for girls to fail and opportunities for success. I always hear from my fellow ladies in the STEM field that the reason they chose to pursue a STEM career was because other successful women in their lives proved that it could be done and inspired them. That’s why here, at Influenster, I shine light on other high-achieving women engineers in our Code Like A Girl content series and also by supporting outstanding female college students studying in the STEM fields with our Code Like A Girl scholarship program.

B+C: What’s your best advice for the #girlbosses out there living a startup life?

ES: To all my #girlfriends and #girlbosses out there, always remember to think long-term! Most of us will be cash- and sleep-deprived during the early days of our startups (eye bags are definitely a part of the package deal). It’s easy to get lost in our day-to-day running of the business and focus solely on making money. But it’s critical to keep the big picture in mind and strategically invest in the partners and companies with whom you want to develop long-lasting relationships. You do that by, first and foremost, providing excellent service and over-delivering on your promises to them (even if that means offering your product or service for free), and then money will follow.

Also, #NoPainNoGain. You’ve got to be willing to give up everything — a stable income, a social life, sleep — and do all the grunt work in order to lay a strong groundwork for your startup. If you believe in your business model and work hard to give your users and clients the best possible experience, there will be light at the end of the tunnel. I didn’t get paid for over a year, went through every dollar of my savings and worked every single day for a good few years. Today, I can safely say it paid off. Influenster is rapidly growing and we currently have 50+ smart and loyal employees. On that note, it’s also important to stay involved as your startup expands and to speak, live and breathe your vision so that all your employees are in tune with it. Even as you expand, you must keep innovating to stay ahead of the curve and the competition.

Lastly, stay away from people who don’t believe in you. Of course, accepting constructive criticism is essential for redirection and growth, but beware of the haters who bring you down. #StayConfident and know that it’s okay not to have all the answers. As entrepreneurs, we might feel the need to have it all together all the time, but it’s totally normal to feel as though your business is on top of the world one day, and that you’re way behind on where you want to be the next. Just stay motivated, be willing to learn from your mistakes and stay open to change along the way!

B+C: How (and why!) can our readers become a part of the Influenster community?

ES: Signing up to be an Influenster is incredibly easy and free! You can create your profile on the Influenster iOS or Android app or on Influenster.com. You’ll be asked to link your social accounts to Influenster, and the more information you share about yourself, the more likely you’ll qualify for campaigns to receive product samples to test and review. Think: YSL Beauty, Kat Von D, Kérastase, CoverGirl, SK-II and many more.

And why should you join? Because we’re a community of two million+ product junkies discovering, reviewing and sharing our mutual love for products. Find out the latest scoop on millions of products aggregated from millions of reviews from real people like you, not ads, not magazine editors. It’s a fun, social outlet for you to tell your friends and followers about the products that you like and don’t like. What’s not to love?

In our Take 5 series, sponsored by Verizon, we ask women in business about unexpected challenges, their inspirations, recent wins, and how the free Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program has helped propel their business forward. Here, we meet Rita Suzanne, a marketing strategist for health and wellness businesses who learned to network, connect with other entrepreneurs, and build her business online and IRL.

What's an unexpected business challenge that you've had to face and how did you overcome it?

The hardest thing for me was my sister passed away and I ended up taking custody of my nieces. I ended up being a single mom of four kids. This is the thing that transitioned my whole entire life. I stopped doing web design and started my podcast Mom Owned and Operated. I wanted to reconnect with other moms and figure out how they were able to run their businesses and raise a family and take care of themselves because I wasn't able to do all three at the same time. Through that journey, I realized that I really needed to connect with other people and how important it was for my business. It helped me to create that community that I was yearning for that I didn't realize that I needed.

What's a recent small win for your business?

For me, the win was just pivoting back to something that I actually wanted to do. Also, I’ve started to say no to things that I no longer want to do.

Who is a woman in business that you look up to and why?

I have always admired and looked up to Amy Porterfield [author of Two Weeks Notice]. I listened to her all the time when I was starting out. I think that she's amazing and I love her stuff. She just seems like a very genuine person.

Is there a resource that has made an impact on you as an entrepreneur?

I listen to a lot of audio books. One of my favorites that has been huge for me is You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero. I was told when I first started my business, by a friend who was a business coach, that I have a mindset problem. Ten years ago, I had no idea even what “mindset” was. Sincero’s book helped me to see what she meant by “mindset” and helped me adjust that mindset and fix some of the things that I didn't realize were broken.

How has the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program helped propel your business forward?

There are a lot of things that I have loved about it. There are local networking and training opportunities, and that has been great, and the online training is very valuable. It's a great resource. I find that marketing needs a three-tiered approach, meaning you need to network it locally, socially, and then also have a very comprehensive online approach to your marketing. One of the Verizon Small Business trainings that I took was all about taking advantage of your local resources. I found that to be extremely valuable because often people think they need to just focus on social media. I don't think that people focus enough on their local community.

This post has been updated. Former reporting by Kaitlyn Ingram and Lauren Black.

In our Take 5 series, sponsored by Verizon, we ask women in business about unexpected challenges, their inspirations, recent wins, and how the free Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program has helped propel their business forward. Here, we meet La Wuandia, singer, songwriter, and promoter behind the Chicago-based global entertainment company Agape Vibes.

La Wuandia of Agape Vibes

What's the most unexpected business challenge you've faced and how did you overcome it?

When I began in the late ‘90s, it was not a surprise that financial institutions would not lend to unconventional or non-traditional businesses like a performance company and even further to a person of color, and even to a female person of color. That was one of the initial road bumps. Then, when the pandemic hit, I had to figure out how to still perform for profit. The audio isn’t great on Zoom, so I started reaching out to other groups and we started performing outdoors, and traveling around the country. They were practically giving hotel rooms away!

What’s a recent small win for you and your business?

Staying Alive. Staying Alive. [laughs] During the pandemic, so many doors closed. But I was able to support my band members who did not have nine-to-fives to fall back on. Now, whenever I do have a performance, if they have something booked, they'll find a sub for that book and come and perform with me. You got to love that integrity.

Who is a woman in business that you look up to and why?

I had the opportunity to meet [a late Supreme Court Justice]. I was a flight attendant, and when she was leaving the plane, she told me she had never experienced a flight with my service ever before. Of course, I was floating. For someone of that caliber to stop and actually recognize and acknowledge my services is truly amazing. I love her story, how she was able to balance work and life and family, then to be able to go as far as the Supreme Court. That was amazing to me.

What's a book, podcast, or resource that has made an impact on you as an entrepreneur?

I love motivational speaker Jim Rohn’s practical applications and how he helps an individual to recognize that a lot of what we are hoping to obtain is already within us, it's a matter of focus. It's a matter of keeping our thought processes positive and moving forward. And also to keep our circle with positive like-minded individuals.

How has the free Verizon Small Business program helped propel your business forward?

The one beautiful thing that I love that Verizon did was to analyze my website [via 1:1 coaching]. I started to learn how my website was being utilized in terms of the traffic and how I can make better use of it. Their digital platform also offered peer networking, peer coaching, mentoring, and it was not a long drawn-out type of programming or training. It was to the point, and then offered a way to get more information. Finally, what I learned from the Verizon program is how to pay myself and how to assess my worth. I was paying myself whatever was leftover, but I realized that was wrong. I needed to give myself a salary.

Since I just harped on all the dreary, outdated shoe trends for 2025, it's only fair I give you all the options you should wear in the new year! I also heard you when you said to let people wear what they want... Since I try to be a girl's girl, I want to give you as many exciting shoe trends that'll align with your personal style as well.

Instead of solely relying on my own wits this time, I reached out to Stitch Fix stylish Jessica Sockel; fashion expert and principal of The Curio, Maggie Gillette Sowislo; personal stylist Sarah Brandt of Shop the City; and Rusty Hall, CEO of Mephisto USA. Here's what stylists and fashion experts have to say about all the best shoe trends for 2025!

Scroll for all the 2025 shoe trends your feet — and outfits — will love!

Steve Madden

1. 'Mocha Mousse' Kitten Heel Boots

Don't fight it — this style is back and better than ever. "We have all seen that Pantone has named 'Mocha Mousse' [color of the year], cementing that brown has surpassed black as the go-to neutral," Brandt muses. As for why she believes kitten heels boots will be a popular style in 2025, she believes it's a "super wearable" choice "for the colder weather months."

2. Elevated loafers and flats on par with 'Quiet Luxury'

Did you really think we were done with quiet luxury? This is a trend that "focuses on classic design and high quality materials," according to Hall. After the success of, well, Succession, people aren't ready to let this trend go — and I don't blame them! Hall says, "We’re seeing a movement away from runway and status brands of the past several years, and instead, consumers have been drawn toward the echo of vintage style."

Hall also feels like people are looking to add comfort instead of "overabundance" to their wardrobes. He explained that after the pandemic, "comfort has prevailed as a predominant factor in shopping for footwear." You'll want to steer clear of gaudy designs with this shoe trend, instead reaching for "shoes with premium construction and materials" that don't have "noisy logos."

If you want a little bit of height, Sockel says "chunky loafers became a go-to for achieving the 'Prep School' aesthetic." She also saw that "ballet flats were a top request, with 38% of shoppers seeking ways to style them."

Dolce Vita

3. Low profile sneakers

This year saw the rise of the 'errand' or everyday sneaker. Hall says, "In contrast to the chunky sneaker silhouette, low-profile sneakers have been trending in 2024, and expect to see that trend continue in 2025."He adds that they're "defined by the upper confirming closely to the foot and lack of support around the ankle" making them "exceptionally versatile".

Both he and Brandt agree that the "iconic Adidas Sambas" are the driving force behind this with the latter adding, "But as they can be hard to come by, I’m seeing some alternate sneakers take the stage — particularly the Adidas SL72, and Onitsuka Tigers, especially the Mexico 66s."

If you need inspo for how to style them! Hall has a couple of tips because "the timeless low-profile look isn't going anywhere." He feels pairing them with "bell bottoms or flare-legged jeans" because they "create a long, clean line."

4. Colorful shoes

The world already feels like a mess sometimes — why not be bold and have fun with your outfits?! While you continue leaning into the red and burgundy shades that continued to trend this year, Hall feels that "turquoise, fuchsia, and yellow tones will brighten up this spring from the past couple of seasons of neutrals."

Another outfit tip he has is to "opt for white and soft ecru shades in the rest of the outfit" as this will "help these bold colors speak for themselves."

5. T-Strap Shoes

If you're still watching The Great Gatsby, you may be familiar with what Gillette Sowislo calls the "new shoe profile." In other words, she feels they're "an update on the Mary Jane trend we've been seeing for a few seasons."

We couldn't get enough of the revival of this that trend so it's going to be exciting to see you and other shoppers rock them with your 2025 outfits. Honestly, Sowislo is sure that "this versatile design can be found in flats, heels, and wedges."

Dansko

6. Wooden Platform Shoes

Wooden platform shoes are having their comeback moment; more notably clogs. Sowislo says, "Since Chloe designer Chemena Kamali decked out the front row of her show in matching wood-bottomed platform sandals, the trend for boho-inspired shoes has risen. These can look like the playful platforms she debuted or be a more practical pair of everyday clogs."

Sockel added, "Looking ahead, we [Stitch Fix] predict a shift toward heeled shoes—think chic booties, clogs, and sandals—that pair seamlessly with oversized jeans and a simple tee for an effortlessly polished Easy Street look."

Architecture Digest's Open Door video series is a juicy peek inside the homes of celebs — and we’re a bit obsessed. From Emma Roberts' cozy, book-filled retreat to Kendall Jenner's serene and chic abode, these tours aren’t just about stunning interiors; they also give us a rare glimpse into their at-home personalities. Live with Kelly and Mark hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos’ recent upper East Side tour had me gushing, but also with a few pauses, like huh? Their five-story home felt like a love letter to their relationship as much as an example of their impeccable style. Here are 10 surprising moments from their beautiful AD house tour!

Scroll down to see all the surprising moments from Kelly Ripa & Mark Consuelos' house tour!

Eyeball Art

Architectural Digest | Art by Marc Quinn

The series of painted photographs by artist Marc Quinn outside Kelly and Mark's bedrooms were one of the bigger surprises. They feature a close-up and enlarged image of their three kids' eyeballs. "They don't live here anymore, but it still feels like they're still with us," says Mark. I'm not an empty nester yet, but I can't tell if he's joking here or not. "I can stare at my kids' eyes forever," adds Kelly. SAME.

TVs Behind Mirrors

Architectural Digest

As someone who really dislikes the look of TVs in any room except a room dedicated to bingeing, I love all of the hidden TVs in their bedroom (shown above), living room, and Mark's man cave.

Escargot Toothpicks

Architectural Digest

This actually has a sweet story behind it, and as an escargot/snail lover, this gift is actually pretty cute. The home was designed with AD100 Hall of Fame interior designer William Sofield, known for his modern luxury style, and he gifted this to them because their son loved escargot, surprisingly at age 9 (at the same time when Sofield was designing the home).

The Dark Cave (on The Fifth Floor)

Architectural Digest

The first surprise moment was Mark's Bar 5, which is where the tour begins. The dark interior was a bit of a surprise until you see the rest of the house in its luxe and neutral palette. It's called Bar 5, Mark notes, because it's on the fifth floor of their forever home, so basically the opposite of a man cave!

They Share A Bathroom!

Architectural Digest

Few couples would choose to share a bathroom and closet if they could afford a place with more than one. That was one of the more endearing parts of their tour. This couple still really loves each other and it's SO cute to see. Even with kids out of the house, they choose to share a bathroom and closet because it brings them closer. #relationshipgoals!

I Want To Be Where People Aren't Pillow

Architectural Digest

Is Kelly Ripa actually an introvert? She spends her time writing at the desk in their bedroom and a split second reveals this cheeky needlepoint pillow. I love their sense of a humor, which really shines through in this video.

Lazy Susan Dining Table

Architectural Digest

I have a soft spot for round dining tables — I feel like they naturally encourage everyone to be part of the conversation. For Kelly and Mark, their dining table has a special feature: it actually turns 360 degrees like a Lazy Susan. Amazing!

Translucent Cabinetry

Architectural Digest

Kelly notes that their translucent cabinetry keeps them honest and forces them to be organized. When Mark talks about the decision-making that went around cabinet pulls, I felt SO seen. Every decision in my home came pretty easily except choosing the cabinet pulls! It felt ridiculous, but I labored over this major (minor?) renovation choice.

The Living Room Trap Door

Architectural Digest

Finally, the hilarious comment from Mark about trapping guests in the living room with a sliding door had me LOL. They are truly adorable and silly. Take a peek inside this totally fun and heart-tugging tour!
