Is It Safe to Strength Train During Pregnancy?

As every pregnant person knows, the nine months of baby-making come with a lot of restrictions. No alcohol, no roller coasters, no hot tubs, and (supposedly) no heavy lifting. But while it might be kind of nice to have strangers carry your groceries for you or get out of helping a friend move for the umpteenth time, the idea that you can’t lift anything heavier than a diaper bag during pregnancy can be a bummer. If you already love the endorphin rush of strength training, do you really have to give it up just because you have a bun in the oven? Or, if you’ve never lifted before, are you forbidden from starting until after baby arrives?

To get the lowdown on pregnancy and weightlifting, we spoke to celebrity personal trainer brothers and founders of HOMAGE Fitness Eric and Ryan Johnson, whose clients include A-listers like Scarlett Johansson, Olivia Cooke, and Patina Miller. With over 10 years in the fitness industry, this duo has worked with celebs throughout their pregnancies to help them lift safely. And they have good news: For most healthy women, strength training can be part of the pregnancy fitness package.

Concerns About Pregnancy and Weightlifting

If you’ve gotten the impression that barbells and baby bumps shouldn’t mix, you’re not alone. For ages, folk wisdom has held that any type of overexertion — especially bearing down on the abdomen — could make the uterus contract, leading to preterm labor. In reality, though, research on the link between heavy lifting and premature birth is mixed. According to a statement from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, an analysis of 62 reports showed “small or null effects” of heavy lifting on scary complications like early delivery, low birth weight, and preeclampsia. (On the other hand, a Danish study of more than 62,000 women found that lifting more than 20 kilograms (or 44 pounds) 10-plus times a day was associated with preterm birth.)

Another major concern for many moms-to-be is that pregnancy-related physical changes might make strength training extra dangerous. “Week by week, as that baby grows in size from a poppy seed to an avocado and beyond,” says Eric, “the woman’s center of gravity gradually shifts forward in relation to their base of support.” This off-kilter sense of balance could definitely make you more likely to biff it during a squat thruster or lunge.

Added to this, the body produces a hormone called relaxin during pregnancy, which loosens joints in preparation for delivery, making you potentially more prone to injury. “Hypermobility, combined with less stability, could be a painful combination,” Eric notes.

Obviously, these concerns mean you’ll need to be extra careful about hitting the weights when you’re expecting, but according to Eric and Ryan, it doesn’t mean lifting during pregnancy is out of the question.

Guidelines for Strength Training During Pregnancy

If strength training was already a part of your fitness regimen pre-baby bump, Eric and Ryan confirm you should be good to continue. Clients they’ve trained through pregnancy have been able to keep up similar levels of lifting, making small adjustments as needed. And despite the party line that pregnancy isn’t the time to start a weightlifting practice, you may not have to wait until you’re postpartum to introduce some lat pulls or Arnold presses. “If the mother-to-be is feeling good, having a healthy pregnancy, and fueling her body properly, there’s no reason why beginning a simple strength training program would be problematic,” says Ryan. “Start slow, and progress at a slow pace. It’s better to underdo it than it is to overdo it when you’re first starting out.”

For both novice and experienced lifters, Ryan suggests bringing in a pro who can help you meet your edge — and keep you from getting hurt. “The safest way to begin a strength training program while pregnant is to hire a professional that has worked in the prenatal/postnatal space before.”

On the whole, say both trainers, the main thing to remember is that weightlifting during pregnancy is an individual decision and should be approached mindfully. “The most important piece of advice is to figure out what works best for you,” says Ryan. “That means figuring out what exercises you enjoy and make you feel good, versus ones that may potentially make you uncomfortable — even if you’ve enjoyed them in the past.” And, as with any exercise program, check with your doctor to get the all-clear before beginning to lift.

Benefits of Weightlifting During Pregnancy

Though, for some women, the baby-on-board condition may not be the right time to start strength training, many of its benefits seem custom-made for pregnancy. For one thing, going beast mode at the gym can be a major stress reliever. “Strength training can certainly help reduce stress and release more endorphins to make you feel better,” says Eric. “Weight training that incorporates functional movement patterns — squats, hip hinge, lunge, push, pull, loaded carry —is a eustress, or a positive stress.” Sounds like a good plan for those days exhausted, feeling-big-as-a-house days.

Additionally, many weight-bearing exercises improve posture. When you’ve got a little person taking up space in your core, better posture could be the key to feeling more comfortable, breathing better, and reducing back pain. Plus, the toning and conditioning of strength training can get your body rockstar-ready for delivery. So, once you get the green light from your medical provider, don’t be afraid to find the strength training workout that works for you.

Olivia Munn bared it all in her latest SKIMS ad, proving you don't have to hide your scars. The actress posed in a campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, supporting Susan G. Komen®and highlighting her own journey with the disease. She looked absolutely stunning in every photo, but the most gorgeous moment was the way Munn didn't shy away from showing her mastectomy scars. She spoke to TODAY about her experience during the shoot, and why she ultimately decided to ditch her insecurities. Here's what she had to say!

Munn shared with TODAYthat she didn't initially plan to show her scars on the set. The campaign was focused on her recovery post-breast cancer diagnosis, but the makeup artist had a hard time covering up the scars throughout the shoot. She explained that she took a look in the mirror and thought, "I’m done being insecure about my scars." From there, she took the idea to show them off to the SKIMS team — and the rest is history.

And while she was scared to be so vulnerable on camera, this was ultimately a really empowering move for Munn. She elaborated that there are "so many women that have these same scars" who feel just as insecure as she did about them — and she really hopes those women see this ad. "Skims is so iconic and associated with beauty and sex appeal, and cancer really doesn't have that same connotation," she said. "So I just really hope that other women who have gone through my same path feel a little better after seeing it."

The star also took to Instagram to give a behind-the-scenes explanation of her experience. She reiterated that she was "done being insecure" about her scars. "Every mark life has left behind on my body is proof of how hard I fought," she wrote. "I hope other women who have been self-conscious about their scars see these photos and feel all the love I’m sending."

She also shared that SKIMS will donate 10% of their bra sales (except bralettes) to Susan G. Komen® — a charity dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer — from October 23-31 in stores and online. "It’s really meaningful to be part of an initiative that supports research and helps countless individuals impacted by breast cancer," she said.

All of this comes on the heels of Munn's announcement earlier this year that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She revealed the diagnosis came after recently tested negatively for well-known breast cancer genes and had normal results from her annual mammogram — but her doctor to check her Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score. The test showed Munn had a 37% risk of breast cancer, so she pushed for more answers that eventually lead to her diagnosis.

Since then, Munn shared with PEOPLE that she had 4 surgeries in 10 months and underwent medically-induced menopause — all the while juggling being a new mom with husband John Mulaney. She shared, "I'm lucky. We caught it with enough time that I had options. I want the same for any woman who might have to face this one day."

After that March announcement, it's clear Munn is dedicated to raising awareness for women's health — and particularly their options. While chatting about the SKIMS campaign, Munn told TODAY, "You've got to go your doctor and you inundate them with information and you don't stop until they give you the test you need."

Emily in Paris season 4 was the buzziest season yet, and for good reason. Emily's in Rome, Camille was never pregnant, and Gabriel's hair went from très hot to tragique. In addition to the viral response to Gabriel's new hair, season 4 left me pretty sad because after four years of waiting for Emily and Gabriel to get together, they almost immediately break up — and actor Lucas Bravo is just as confused as we are.

“The ‘sexy chef’ was very much part of me in Season 1 and we grew apart season after season because of the choices he makes and because of the direction they make him take,” Lucas Bravo told IndieWire while promoting Mélanie Laurent’s Freedom. “As they made him kind of unaware of his surroundings, of the dynamic, always victimizing and always being completely lost in translation and oblivious to anything that is happening around him and being manipulated by everyone, it kind of became not fun for me to shoot or to see a character I love so much and brought me so much, being slowly turned into guacamole. I really grew apart from him.”

Honestly it makes me really sad that a character we all love so much is becoming unrecognizable. But at the same time, it makes me feel a little bit better, because we're not the only ones who feel like Gabriel has changed. And while Lucas has done what he can to bring those early-series aspects of Gabriel back, he says "there is only so much I can do in the limits of a script.”

“I tried for seasons to bring nuances but we don’t have much liberty on set," he continues. “It makes me question if I want to be part of Season 5…because my contract ends at Season 4. I really want to see if Gabriel gets back to his fun, cheeky, playful, alive self. Because three seasons playing melancholic, sad, depressed, and lost is not fun anymore. It’s a comedy, everybody is having fun around me, everybody is jumping around, and I’m just slowly sinking into god knows what.”

Say what now?! If Lucas Bravo leaves Emily in Paris, I truly don't know what I'd do. Gabriel is my favorite character on the show! (Or at least, early Gabriel was.) Seeing him move from 30, flirty, and thriving to someone who's consistently in the middle of an existential crisis doesn't make sense within the world of the show. And even though Lucas thinks the show has a "lack of risk," he still loves everyone involved.

“I love the show. It started everything for me. I love the show and the people in it," he says. "With saying that, I feel like I am not being nice or grateful, but when you love something you want it to be…you want the best version of it. I’m not going to lie, I’ve been frustrated with the direction by character is taking. But we’ll see where it goes. The show is not over.”

Just like the show's iconic costumes are all about expression and fun, here's hoping Emily in Paris is able to bring some life back into our favorite chef. Because if not, it sounds like we could be nearing the end of the show's most popular would-they-won't-they relationship. Fix this Netflix, I beg you!
