Jaclyn Johnson on Embracing Failure and Getting Back Up

You’ve probably seen her chatting to female powerhouses like Issa Rae and Meghan Markle at one of her company’s popular conferences for millennial women in business, or perhaps you recognize her from when she scored a coveted spot on the Forbes 30 under 30 list. But founder and CEO of Create & Cultivate Jaclyn Johnson didn’t just wake up one day being one of the brightest 30-somethings in her industry. In fact, her career journey was a hard-fought battle through painful business breakups, inspiring ah-ha moments, and daunting professional risks, all of which she details in her highly anticipated new memoir that will be released on August 21.

In her new book WorkParty ($26), Johnson reveals the highs and lows of her unique career path — from moving across the country for a job only to be abruptly let go a few months later to starting a new company that has blossomed into a highly successful enterprise. Coupling her own business acumen with stories from leading female entrepreneurs, from Refinery29‘s Christene Barberich to Ban.do‘s Jen Gotch, Johnson encourages millennial businesswomen to embrace failure, cultivate the career of their dreams, and create their own WorkParty.

Brit + Co: First of all, congratulations on the publication of WorkParty! We absolutely loved reading about your unique entrepreneurial success story. Why was this the right time and medium to share your professional story with the world?

Jaclyn Johnson: Aww, thanks, girl! For me, the reason I started Create & Cultivate was because there was nothing online that spoke to me in a way I related to. When it came to WorkParty it really was just a matter of saying, I’ve been working now for over 13 years and have been through it all. I want to share the experience in a real way with women who can use it and learn from it and grow their careers in meaningful ways.

B+C: Okay, for all of our female entrepreneurs out there who haven’t yet read the book, what exactly is a WorkParty?

JJ: The joy has been sucked out of work for too long. WorkParty is a movement for a new generation of women who are redefining the meaning of work on their own terms, who are creating and cultivating their careers and having fun while doing it.

B+C: If we had to choose a genre for WorkParty, we would probably say that it’s part professional memoir, part inspirational Instagram feed, and part HBIC business guide. That means that instead of just writing your own story, you made the decision to provide extremely practical tips and lists that all businesswomen should know. What was your mindset in coupling your own story with more practical business tips?

JJ: Right on the mark! My path to entrepreneurship doesn’t include an MBA, and I didn’t work my way up the corporate ladder to success. My path is unique, and that’s the same for so many women. Work has changed. By 2020, 40 percent of workers will be part of the gig economy. Working women have changed. We’re breadwinners! The number of women-owned businesses is on the rise and not slowing down. It was important for me to share the advice I now know to be vital. That means everything from tactical advice on understanding and negotiating contracts, to the tools needed to hone your pitch, to best practices if you’re thinking of selling your business, and more.

B+C: Perhaps one of the most refreshing parts of WorkParty is how real you get with your (mostly female) readers: “I’d often lead a status meeting or client call and then need to take 10 in our office’s industrial, high-ceilinged bathroom that looked out onto South Los Angeles Avenue and cry my eyes out. I am not the first woman — nor will I be the last — to seek solace in the women’s restroom at work. The women’s room acts as a patriarchal shield, a safe space for tears, a place to feel vulnerable,” you wrote. You address topics like impostor syndrome and your own pizza-cry-fest of 2009; why did you feel it was important to shine a light on the harder parts of your professional journey?

JJ: I think it’s really important to talk about the hardships and difficulties of our lives. Jen Gotch says in the book she doesn’t want to make it look easy because it’s not, and it’s so true. In an Insta-perfect world, we [have to] be able to tell people to speak about the realities of our world. When building a business, there’s no fast and quick rule on how to make it. As an entrepreneur, you have to know that resiliency is required, but you will also find you are stronger than you ever imagined.

B+C: You also go into great detail (we’re talking a full actionable checklist) on how to deal with harassment in the workplace. In the age of #MeToo and #TimesUp, can you talk a bit about why you decided to create a practical guide for women who are going through this unfortunately common problem?

JJ: I think many women have been in this position and didn’t know what to do, myself included. They’re scared and not sure what steps to take or who to talk to or honestly how to LEGALLY approach the situation. I want women to know they have every right to speak up. Self-worth and dignity are never things that need to be negotiated.

B+C: Along with sharing your own story, you also enlist advice from other highly successful women — from Ban.do’s Jen Gotch to Drybar’s Alli Webb — and make it a point to call out other female entrepreneurs who are doing great things in their respective spaces. We love all this women-in-business love! Keeping it going, do you have any other business books by inspiring women that you’d recommend?

B+C: Finally, writing a professional memoir in your 30s must have been a pretty introspective journey. What did you learn about yourself while writing WorkParty?

JJ: It was a wild ride to look down memory lane; reflection is sort of a lost art these days. We move so fast, scroll, click, tap, and are already moving onto the next thing, but to truly sit and reflect was really invaluable. I think the biggest thing I took away was the idea behind resiliency; I went through a lot of sh*t and have still managed to move forward, keep positive, and prove a lot of people wrong along the way. Knowing you are able to get back up time and time again can be a powerful feeling.

There's arguably nothing worse than dealing with a passive-aggressive boss. Rather than laying their grievances out on the line, they use indirect communication that leaves you feeling confused, frustrated, and unsure of how to respond without escalating the situation.

But whether it's a sarcastic remark, a roundabout criticism, or a backhanded compliment, handling these statements with calculated grace is key. So, here are 10 smart responses you can use on your boss the next time they make passive-aggressive comments.

1. Clarify & Confirm

Have you ever been on the receiving end of a wild remark from your boss that practically made you do a double-take? If so, don't be afraid to respectfully ask for clarification, forcing them to expand on their perspective without any ambiguity.

For instance, saying something like, "I just want to make sure I understand you currently. Are you saying that..." and paraphrasing their comment is a powerful tool. Not only will it avoid miscommunication, but it will also make your boss address their issue with you head-on.

We can only learn and grow in environments that challenge us while supporting us along the way. However, passive-aggressive bosses may resort to beating around the bush, making offhand critiques about your work that are vague yet still hurtful.

You can urge your employer to be more straightforward with you by telling them point-blank, "I value your feedback." Asking for open dialogue as opposed to one-off comments will show that you're receptive to constructive criticism and encourage your boss to be a stronger leader.

Whether your boss tries to guilt-trip you by implying you're not doing enough or praises you in a sarcastic manner, you can always politely challenge them, too.

Try saying, "It seems like you're hinting at something. Could you be more direct so I can address it appropriately?" Your boss will be put on the spot and driven to share their true feelings without the white noise.

Passive aggression shouldn't be acceptable in workplaces, but sometimes, showing compassion and understanding can help diffuse these all-too-common situations.

As hard as it may be, giving your boss some grace and acknowledging their apparent frustrations may be enough to get you both on the same page.

For instance, saying something such as, "It sounds like you might be feeling irritated. Let's figure out what we can do to fix it together," can encourage teamwork and put a stop to the indirect blame game.

It can be tempting to go on the offensive in passive-aggressive situations. Even so, staying cool as a cucumber will reinforce your professionalism and prevent a full-blown stand-off from occurring.

All you have to say is, "I hear your concerns, and I'll focus on improving that moving forward." It's direct, indicates you understand your boss' grievances, and should keep them from harping on.

7. Redirect To Next Steps

One of the biggest issues with passive aggression is that it makes someone's issue with you indirectly apparent. Yet, it can be tough to know exactly how to fix their problem moving forward, given they're beating around the bush.

Let's say your boss makes a snarky remark about a PTO request or acts unsatisfied with a project you completed. Don't hesitate to ask, "So, what next steps should we take to ensure this doesn't happen again?"

You could be early in your career or an industry veteran. Either way, vague passive-aggressive statements about performance can be equally hurtful (not to mention unhelpful).

A smart way to respond is by saying, "I'm here to learn and grow." It makes your intentions crystal clear, reminds your boss that you're only human, and could open up conversations about avenues for improvement.

9. Share How You Value Your Professional Relationship

All relationships, from romantic and platonic to professional, rely on mutual respect and communication. Passive aggression is a sign of disrespect, but you can help turn interactions with your boss around by saying, "I value our professional relationship."

It will successfully set a positive tone and convey that you want a healthy working relationship. It may also help your boss realize that they haven't been treating you the way they'd like to be treated.

10. Set Boundaries

Finally, the most direct approach is to confront your boss' passive-aggressive attitude by setting firm boundaries. This can be uncomfortable, but with the right tact and professionalism, it can be very powerful.

For example, consider using this statement: "I believe in having open and honest communication. Can we make sure we're on the same page moving forward?"

It makes your desire for transparency clear and forces your boss to rise to your expectations.

During my time as a Starbucks barista, I thought I had seen it all – snarky customers, massive spills – but this one truly takes the cake. In a recent Reddit thread, a barista shared an absolutely diabolical coffee order their cafe received, and the most accurate way I can describe the drink is, well, undrinkable.

Many Starbucks customers request customizations to their beverages, but this insane sip was customized to the point of chaos – and it sent the worker into a (pretty hilarious) spiral.

Nothing quite prepares you for the mayhem that unfolds before 7 a.m. as a Starbucks barista, no matter what customers order. But when a drink with 13 customizations comes through, it’s downright frustrating.

This barista’s morning task was to make a single Caramel Crunch Frappuccino made in a venti size with (big breath) a caramel-lined cup, a double shot of espresso, 5 pumps of vanilla syrup, 3 pumps of caramel syrup, 3 pumps of dark caramel syrup, 5 pumps of white mocha sauce, 5 scoops of vanilla bean powder, almond milk, double-blended, light whip, extra caramel drizzle, extra cookie crumble toppings, and extra caramel crunch toppings. Whew, that’s a mouthful.

They shared the monstrous drink on r/Starbucks and vented with frustration:

“...She must have a stomach of steel bc she orders this every morning. I sigh every time I pull this sticker there is no reason that a sticker should be taking up [a] majority of the cup, and MINUTES of my time on bar. I can't help but judge people when they drink nasty stuff like this every day but hey you’re here for a good time not a long time right? 😅”

Many more baristas and Starbucks fans hopped in on the discourse, sharing the same annoyance.

“My teeth hurt just looking at that,” one person wrote.

“How is that even orderable like that? That’s crazy!” another person commented. “That should not be allowed.”

“This would instantly obliterate a Victorian child,” one more person said.

There are so many things wrong with this drink order. From a barista perspective, making a beverage with that many customizations takes up a lot of precious time behind the coffee bar, especially during a morning “rush” period – which typically starts at 7 a.m. Not to mention, it can disturb the drink-making process when there are other customers to take care of.

Secondly, it cannot be healthy at all. In fact, one Redditor did their own research and concluded that the Frappuccino measured up to have around 1040 to 1100 calories, 26 grams of fat, and 208 grams of sugar. Knowing the customer orders this drink every morning is just crazy. Yikes!

Next time you request a customization to your Starbucks drink, just know your request for extra cold foam or a sprinkle of cinnamon doesn't get worse than this.

A24 just stopped internet traffic with their latest announcement: they're adaptating Holly Brickley's new book, Deep Cuts! It's one of the new books that made it to the top of our must-read list, so we're basically hyperventilating after learning Saoirse Ronan and Austin Butlerare starring in it! We'd watch anything they're in even if they don't have any lines because the brevity of their acting skills would speak for themselves. What is 'Deep Cuts' about?

Deep Cuts cleverly depicts how love can be beautiful and chaotic when two people are as passionate about their goals as they are each other. With each page, readers are able to see how Percy Marks and Joe Morrow lose sight of each other as well as themselves the deeper they pursue careers in music. By the end of their story it's apparent they both longed for their voices to be in spotlight, for better or worse.

Has the full cast for 'Deep Cut's been announced?

No other cast information has been shared besides Saoirse Ronan and Austin Butler's involvement. However, we're confident we'll see more A-listers attached to the project! Personally, we'd love to see Florence Pugh or Jacob Elordi make an appearance! Hopefully someone sees this so our dreams can come true.
