Why This World-Traveling Food Stylist Quit Her Job to Start an Organic Tampon Company

Why This World-Traveling Food Stylist Quit Her Job to Start an Organic Tampon Company

It’s a natural jump from being an Ireland-based food stylist and chef to becoming a mom, moving to Singapore, and deciding to start an eco-friendly, organic sanitary product company, right? Wait, WHAT. That’s right. Meet Jette Virdi, the crazy inspiring former plumbing entrepreneur, hotel owner, food stylist, photographer, and mom that’s dead set on changing the tampon industry, one biodegradable, non-toxic tampon at a time.

Anjelika Temple here, Founding Partner and Chief Creative Officer. I met Jette a lifetime ago when we both attended The Unique Camp. At the time she was an artist, food stylist, and chef, embarking on launching her own line of home goods. Now, four years later, we’re both moms to fiery little girls, and it’s this particular role that’s inspired Jette’s latest endeavor, Ilo.

Launched just last month on International Women’s Day, Jette’s company Ilo aims to reshape the period industry from the ground up. Not only is her mission to create ethical, organic products, but she really wants to change the conversation about periods, to remove the stigma attached to it in so many communities, and to educate, inspire, and empower everyone with a period. In today’s edition of Creative Crushin’, read all about Jette’s creative journey, from creative-of-all-trades to founder/activist.

Brit + Co: First off, tell us a little more about your background.

Jette Virdi: I was born in the UK, but at the time, my parents were living in France, so I grew up in a tiny little village in the south of France and then we moved back to the UK when I was around 7ish. Then [I went to] boarding school up in Scotland and my parents moved around a lot, so I’d go to them during school holidays to places like Gabon, South America, and all over the world really.

After school, I went and lived on a sheep farm in New Zealand rustling them in the mountains and learning to dock their tails and lived out there for about a year, came back, and studied Psychology and Sports Science in Newcastle, then went off again traveling for a year round the world. I ended up living in Australia for a while and starting a business with my then boyfriend. Since then I’ve lived in Mexico and Ireland, and now I’m in Singapore with my fiance Tom and baby girl, Molly.

I’ve had an amazing life and upbringing so far and it’s definitely down to my parents! They were so open and always traveling and gave me the attitude that if you don’t like your situation, location, work, etc., you can always go back, but you should at least try. So, here I am, trying.

B+C: Before you founded Ilo, what did your career path look like?

JV: Haha, there was no career path! I’m very much one of those people who: wants to do something, do it, luckily things work out, get bored, and try something new. I’ve had a plumbing company in Australia, a sustainable boutique hotel in Mexico, and a homeware range in Ireland as well as owning a photography and styling studio.

B+C: It’s a pretty major jump to go from being a food stylist and chef to the founder of an ethical sanitary product company. Tell us about the turning point when you knew you just *had* to take the plunge and start Ilo.

JV: When we got pregnant back in 2017, we were looking to leave Ireland, and we, well Tom was applying for jobs all around the world and just seeing what came back. So I knew that I wouldn’t be styling and chef-ing and doing photography. Plus I just got really fed up with the freelance life — people paying you months late and so on.

But it wasn’t actually until I’d given birth that I wanted to start ilo. Having a kid is one of the most un-eco-friendly things you can do, and I was so freaked out that actually the original idea was to start a biodegradable single-use diaper company (most biodegradable diapers are only so in lab conditions) and we’d go into female sanitary products later. The technology just isn’t there right now for diapers so we pivoted and went straight to female sanitary products that are non-toxic, 100 percent organic, and biodegradable with the plan of getting our own team of scientists to create the technology in the future.

Part of my freakout was having a girl in today’s society and really taking stock of how to raise her where she can feel empowered, important, and part of society, and that really meant for me, how can we make every kid feel that way so that it’s a fully accepting society.

Sanitary products and menstruation are still so taboo and now with our gender ideas changing and becoming more fluid, there is such a need to be conscious and de-stigmatize such a normal bodily function.

B+C: What inspired you to start Ilo? Tell us about your company’s driving north star.

JV: Our mission at ilo is to celebrate every person with a period. We believe that you shouldn’t be putting chemicals into the most absorbent part of your body for month after month for over 40 years and that safe, non-toxic menstrual products should be available for everyone.

We are a socially impactful company that donates 50 percent of our profits to fighting period poverty and we really try to educate, empower, and inspire you about all things menstrual health and periods.

We do believe that people need to be made aware of the toxins found in menstrual products and be educated on why you should make the switch to your body. Recent research has linked their use with fertility issues, endometriosis, and other immune system issues. And frankly, periods just aren’t talked about enough, so society still has this yuck factor when it comes to talking about them, which needs to change if we’re truly going to be fully in love with ourselves and our bodies.

B+C: The birth of your daughter Molly sounds like a major part of your aha moment. What about motherhood and bringing a girl into the world has changed your approach to work/life/everything?

JV: It’s changed everything — and I know that is so cliché, but honestly, I never really understood how much it could have changed me until after. I‘ve never wanted kids, I never hung out with kids, I honestly didn’t know what to do with one. And while the breastfeeding, the knowing what she wanted came easy, I had really bad PND and it really affected me because suddenly I felt very un-free. I wasn’t able to be me and create and put all my energy into events or styling or new projects.

It actually really upset me and pissed me off that motherhood is just shown and promoted in such a “oh wow, I’m so fulfilled” kinda way because honestly, for me, being a mum does not fulfill me. She’s amazing and I love her but do I want to spend my entire day with her on a regular basis? No, I want to work and create and help people. And so that also has taught me with work that I need to slow down and my expectations of what I can achieve in a day have had to shift. I spend the mornings with Molly tech-free and we hang out. Then afternoons I work and at this moment while she’s still little is my life. I’ve found a new sense of being able to stop and just realize — I can’t do anything about this email now, I just need to do what I can. It’s a real head screw and one that I still don’t see many guys having to go through!

B+C: I imagine that time for self-care is hard to come by, even when part of your mission is such a caring, affirming, body positive one. How do you balance being a founder, being a mom, and being a partner with simply being yourself and taking care of you?

JV: One of the reasons we chose Singapore, in the end, is because we could afford to have a live-in nanny, and oh my goodness. I would honestly say this is the only thing that has saved me. Marilyn is part of the family and without her, I would not be as good a mum as I am, I would not be able to create a company like ilo.

We are so unbelievably lucky to have her. And honestly, even with her, there’s very little time. Right now, as soon as Molly’s in bed, I’m working again so it doesn’t really come easy. But I have put in place certain restrictions like we’re a flexible working company — and we only work Monday through Thursday so that Friday is family day.

B+C: Sometimes being a founder can feel a little isolating. What does your support system look like? Do you have mentors and peers you turn to for advice?

JV: It can be so lonely for sure! I had a really bad experience with a business partner so I don’t want to ever have that again, but I have mentors and business experts who have really taken me on. I moved to Singapore in April 2018, had the concept for ilo in August 2018, and by March 2019, I’d launched, which blew everyone away! But I’m just not one of those people who can sit around and really think and perfect, and think again. I’m an “if I don’t do it now, I know I won’t do it” person. So when we moved to Singapore, the mentors that were the real ground-shakers for me helped me to get it done. And some of them are so harsh, I laugh now at conversations I had with them when they basically told me that “I could either be successful or be a business with heart.” I remember saying, “Screw you, I can do both. The world needs companies that can do both and I’m coming back and will show you it can work.” And so far, I’ve proven them wrong, so fingers crossed it will last.

Trivia About You: I absolutely hate feet!

Go-To Karaoke Song: "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" by Paul Simon

Late Night Snack: Jar of Nutella plus spoon

Currently Reading: Periods Gone Public by Jennifer Weiss Wolf and BFG by Roald Dahl

B+C: Do you still make time for baking, cooking, and styling beautiful foods?

JV: Honestly, no. We eat a lot of rice and veggies at the moment. We also don’t have an oven in our apartment so, that means no baking! However I have taken the dining out thing to a whole new level, and there’s a bakery just opened called MotherDough that literally has the best cookies. So, I figure, if I can’t make them, I’ll at least treat myself to something amazing!

B+C: Given that we met at a camp for creatives, I know that creativity is hugely important to you. In your current day-to-day, what does your creative practice look like?

JV: Pretty non-existent right now, to be honest. About the only creative outlet I have at the moment is styling shots to use for social or press.

Time is my enemy right now, and the fact that when I do have time, I’m so tired that all I want to do is sleep. But that’s okay. I know that this is temporary, and I’ll get back to myself when Molly is a bit older and maybe at pre-school three mornings a week. It’s been hard coming to that acceptance though! You know, rushing to style shots while she has a one hour nap and being unhappy with the outcome and then the learning process of “okay, just let it go right now.”

B+C: Back to ilo! Why do you think it’s so important to flip the script on how mainstream society talks about periods?

JV: Oh gosh. Where to begin?? Literally, there are so many reasons that the script needs to be flipped. But here goes with a few of the most basic ones:

1. Because no person - trans, non-binary, cis, woman should EVER feel embarrassed, upset, disgusted by having their period. By opening up the conversation we can show the generations to come that they shouldn’t feel any of those things about a natural bodily function.

2. So many people suffer from period poverty. One in 10 girls around the world cannot afford to purchase sanitary products regularly. Think about that. YOU know someone that can’t afford to, which means that when they go to school or work or are just out living their everyday lives, they have to worry constantly about whether this month then can afford to have hygienic clean sanitary products or potentially buy food. Let that just sink in for a second. I don’t want any kid, ANY kid, growing up in today's world to have to deal with that. Ever. There is no reason that they should have to.

3. As someone who bleeds, my life is worse off than someone who doesn’t. We have to pay luxury tax on period products, I can’t enter my temple when I have my period. In some communities, having my period means I’m diseased and unclean and would be made to sleep outside or not be able to cook for my kids. And while I’m 100 percent not saying I’m trying to change your religious beliefs, I am of the belief that we all need to be more accepting and change the educational learning and script around periods.

B+C: If you could give your younger self-advice, what would it be?

JV: Don’t judge your body too harshly, babe. You looked really hot back when you were 27 even though you thought you looked like an overweight hairy Indian woman. But that’s just the media, babe, trying to tell you you should look like a skinny white girl and that’s just never going to be you. You are worthy and beautiful and oh-so-bloody amazing.

B+C: What’s up next for you and Ilo? What should we be on the lookout for?

JV: We’re currently looking for investment and have launched our Go Fund Me page to try and raise £20,000.

We’re currently signing contracts with multinationals, so you’ll be able to get our products in supermarkets in Europe and Asia, which is massive as well as partnering with a couple of high-end hotels to offer our 100 percent organic cotton tampons to their guests. Then there is an educational program being organized to roll out into schools in 2020 to increase education around menstrual health.

We’ll also be introducing a menstrual product for teenagers and then a food product to help you with vitamins and nutrients throughout your menstrual cycle. Not much really ;)

Well that is a mission and crazy career shift we can definitely get behind. You can follow all things ilo at @ilo.women on Instagram and at ilolove.com.

After several Christmases, I have fully assumed the role of charcuterie-maker in my family. I geek out over arranging everything to be as perfect as possible – I’m talkin’ meats, cheeses, olives, nuts, peppers, dips, breads, and of course, crackers.

As a self-proclaimed pro, the signature mark of a great charcuterie spread is having plenty of unique flavor combos – and Trader Joe’s latest limited-edition innovation is just the thing I’ve been searching for to complete my snacky plans!

Trader Joe's

Trader Joe’s Stollen Crisps have the people going crazy. While you’d normally assume crackers to be a savory treat, these crispy bites boast raisins, orange and lemon peels, and a “dusting” of powdered sugar.

The Stollen Crisps mimic the grocery chain’s famous Fig & Olive Crisps (which also inspired the late seasonal Raisin & Rosemary Crisps and Strawberry & Jalapeño Crisps) by combining unexpected sweet notes with a savory-leaning base. Every bite will leave your Christmas dinner guests reeling!

TJ’s fanatic @traderjoeslist recently reviewed the Trader Joe’s Stollen Crisps on their Instagram account, and plenty of shoppers chimed in to share their thoughts on them – including some epic snacking combinations.

“Those are soooo good!!” one person said enthusiastically. “I [took] the lemon ricotta and blended it with some heavy cream and a pinch of sugar. OMG. Sooooo good!!!!”

“I’ve been enjoying them with brie!” another commenter wrote.

“I had these last year and couldn’t wait for them to come back,” someone else commented. “Excellent with cheese - cuts the sweetness.”

Trader Joe's

The Trader Joe’s Stollen Crisps currently go for $4.29 for 5.3 ounces worth of crunchy crackers. They have the perfect balance of sweet and savory, qualifying them as the ideal cracker to add to your Christmas plans this year. Even if you normally don’t opt for out-there flavors like this, you’re definitely going to change your mind after a bite with brie.

You’ve gotta be quick, though – this Trader Joe’s marvel is only on shelves for a limited time. Though there’s not a concrete end date for this snack, it’ll likely be gone right after the holidays. Time to stock up!

Like many autumn-loving millennials, I grew up watching Gilmore Girls religiously, and I'm not embarrassed to say Lorelai and Rory had a major influence on my formative years. While my GG viewing journey began in my beachy Florida hometown, dreaming of small-town Connecticut vibes where it’s inexplicably always fall, I continued watching via reruns — and eventually Netflix — for the next two decades.

However, this year something shifted. Suddenly, I didn’t relate to Lorelai and Rory in the way I used to. Situations where I was previously 100% on their side (ahem, Mitchum), I see things more clearly (except the yacht situation — that was never cool, Rory!). Which makes sense, as my first viewing was around Rory’s age...and I’m now 32, Lorelai’s age at the start of the series. I’ve always heard that wisdom comes with age, so here are 25 thoughts I have rewatching Gilmore Girls as an adult.

Having A Baby At 16 (& Raising Her On Your Own) Is Huge

Image via WB

It’s actually a pretty big deal — not just a funny one-liner. During my first viewing, it felt like teen pregnancy was everywhere in pop culture, and I didn’t fully comprehend why some characters made a big deal over Lorelai’s age while others just laughed along. But as a newly minted 32-year-old, I couldn’t imagine having a 16-year-old child right now! Let alone raising one very well from the time I was just 16 myself! Definitely impressive of young (and adult) Lorelai!

Lorelai Was Right To Turn Chris Down

Image via WB

As a hopelessly romantic teen who desperately wanted a cute boyfriend, I thought love was all you needed. And I was extremely confused by Lorelai’s rejection of Chris’s proposal in the first season. He said he loved her and wanted to be a family — shouldn’t that be enough? But alas, he wasn’t ready for a commitment, and Lorelai knew it. Trusting your gut is a big part of growing up.

Max Medina Wasn’t *That* Great

Image via WB

I always thought Max’s proposal was incredibly romantic. He did exactly what Lorelai wanted — 1,000 yellow daisies (definitely more than 1,000 TBH) and had a beautiful speech prepared, which he delivered….over the phone? It’s honestly pretty strange that he wasn’t there in person. Proposals are so personal, and his just felt disconnected. It’s no wonder Lorelai had trouble making up her mind!

Emily And Richard Aren’t As Mean As Lorelai Makes Them Out To Be

Image via WB

Sure, they can be harsh and difficult, and they're clearly still hurt over the past. But so are Lorelai and Rory, whether or not the show wants to admit it. But this is life and all humans are flawed, and Lorelai isn’t the victim that I always believed she was.

Lorelai And Rory Are SO Codependent

Image via WB

I always thought their relationship was perfect, but it’s honestly not too healthy for either of them. We know Lorelai’s emotional growth is stunted due to having to be an adult from a young age, but maybe their relationship explains why Rory isn’t as well-adjusted as she should be either.

Richard’s Attack On Dean Wasn't Malicious

Image via WB

For years, I thought Richard was such a jerk for this, but as an adult...I can see his intentions are in the right place. We're all the sum of who we spend the most time with, so the company we keep is important. However, his delivery probably could’ve waited until after dinner.

Naming A Baby After Yourself Is Pretty Bad*ss

Image via WB

Though it’s mentioned in the show a few times — often played as a joke or a quirky character trait — I kind of love that Lorelai went for it and named her baby Lorelai, too. Men have been doing this for years, and I wish more women would as well. It’s such a cool, forward-thinking choice, especially for a young girl in the 80's!

Pride Is Great...Unless You Let It Hinder Your Life

Image via WB

Another example of Lorelai playing the victim: When she wanted a bank loan, Emily knew that Lorelei would need a co-signer and showed up for her despite their differences, without intentionally making her feel bad. Instead of accepting the help, Lorelai assumed her mom was out to get her (?) and almost cost herself the opportunity to get some much-needed funding, all because of her relentless insistence of doing it all on her own. The lesson? Don’t be so shortsighted and quick to assume.

Christopher Somehow *Always* Makes The Worst Decisions

Image via WB

In season 2, he wasn’t being romantic by giving Lorelai the pearl necklace for her graduation, and I refuse to see this gesture as such. He was still dating Sherry, and that totally sent mixed signals.

A little later, when Christopher and Lorelai finally give it a go for real, he finds out Sherry is pregnant and decides to marry her instead. Let me just say...there's no universe where this was the right thing to do! Besides breaking Lorelai’s (and Rory’s!) hearts, he entered into a loveless marriage, doing a disservice to both Sherry and Gigi.

Paris Was On To Something With Her Quest To Uncover The Dark Side Of Small Towns

Image via WB

This was played for laughs, and as a tween in 2001, I thought it was ridiculous. However, in today’s climate...it’s not too difficult to imagine the dark side of a small town — despite how charming and idyllic it may look on the surface.

Emily’s Desire To Find A Maid She Likes Is *Sorta* Fair

Image via WB

Yes, she’s not warm and fuzzy, but Emily Gilmore knows what she wants. I once thought she was a mean dictator, but her monologue in relation to the lawsuit clears it up: If you’re paying for a service, you demand that service (i.e. coach vs first class on a plane). If someone is working in your home, it’s all the more important to get the chemistry and personality fit right, as opposed to a traditional office environment.

Logan’s Family’s Opinion Of Rory Wasn't Too Far Off

Image via WB

Although Logan’s family’s disapproval of Rory when they meet her at dinner is unexpected, it’s definitely not as out of the blue as I originally thought. Logan’s family knows Richard and Emily well, and they’re likely well aware of Rory’s career aspirations, which is the main point of contention. Although Logan’s mother and grandfather are extremely clear about this, Rory can’t get past thinking it’s a class issue. I will never not cringe at hearing her exclaim “but I’m a Gilmore?!?!” Whether we like it or not, compatibility of lifestyles and goals play a huge role in whether a couple has a successful future together — Logan’s parents were just looking out for him, misguided as they may have been.

Michum’s Offer For An Internship Was Thoughtful

Image via WB

Rory initially rejects this very generous offer for a fantastic opportunity that will help further her career ambitions, all because she believes it wasn’t extended for the right reasons (out of guilt over the dinner). Mitchum’s response “So what? Life is full of opportunities….” is so spot on. It doesn’t matter why — just take advantage of what’s in front of you! Maybe if Rory wasn’t so uncomfortable using her connections, she would have been a more successful journalist.

So Maybe Mitchum Was A Little Right About Rory

Image via WB

I so clearly remember being confused by how the Mitchum internship went down. But she’s Rory, how could she *not* have what it takes?! But now, as a college grad who successfully completed 14 internships during undergrad and has worked in communications for almost a decade, I completely understand where he’s coming from.

If you rewatch these episodes, you’ll see the light as well. In the scene right before Mitchum has the talk with Rory, he’s running an editorial meeting and she’s sitting in. He mentions the paper can find students (like Rory, who writes for the Yale Daily News) at local colleges (like Yale) to freelance for the paper, and Rory stayed silent. That was her moment to impress him by raising her hand and volunteering, and it was also the moment when he decided she didn’t have what it takes to be a journalist. Looking at it now, she was very clearly missing the drive; the “not knowing if she could speak up because she’s just an intern” schtick? Any budding journalist would have raised their hands so quickly for a shot at a byline on a real paper.

While all of Rory’s growth at the paper was great — learning names, getting coffee orders correct — she was essentially growing into a secretary, not a journalist. And there’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s a very different skillset.

TL;DR she didn't have what it takes, he knew it, and he did her a favor (as she tried to do with the ballerina, however harsh it was.)

Rory’s Harsh Ballet Review Was Actually Symbolic

Image via WB

Shortly after Rory returns to Yale, she’s tasked with reviewing a ballet performance. She hates the performance and decides to eviscerate the ballerina in her review, only feeling guilty *after* the she’s confronted. By the episode’s end, Rory realizes that truthful reviews are important and it’s better that the ballerina finds out now so she can pursue something else instead. This make sense, but for some reason Rory can’t seem to connect her harsh review with Mitchum’s, despite very recently being on the receiving end of a well-meaning (but harshly received) review. Effectively, Rory became the Mitchum, illustrating that she’s grown thicker skin and isn't afraid to hurt feelings when she needs to.

Luke Telling Rory That He And Lorelai Are Engaged Was...Off

Image via WB

I wanted our girls to make up as much as the next serial rewatcher, but this was not it. Luke inserting himself in the middle of Rory and Lorelai during their fight and telling Rory that they’re engaged is so misguided and inappropriate. And then proceeding to flip out at Lorelai, because their fight is inconveniencing him? Let’s add Luke to the list of emotionally immature characters on this show.

Lorelai Planning The Entire Wedding In One Day Is SO Unrealistic

Image via WB

As a tween this seemed normal, but as an adult who just spent two years (!) planning their own wedding, I can confirm it’s totally unrealistic.

Also, getting married in a church is an absolutely bizarre choice for someone who isn’t at all religious (as we learned in Sookie’s baptism episode). And why would she pick out Luke’s tuxedo, without him even trying it on?

I get that weddings are inherently “girly” and not Luke’s thing, but your partner should have some involvement in the planing process (at the very least, maybe get their opinion on the venue and tux?!). These are big financial decisions that should not be made alone (she put down non refundable deposits and booked dates before checking with him). I love Luke & Lorelai but upon rewatching, they were never on the same page — which is so evident here.

Dave Rygalski Was A Pathological Liar

Image via WB

I used to think he was the perfect guy, and it took me a long time to see the light. Never forget how he jumped through all those hoops for Lane! But as an adult who has dealt with *many* too-good-to-be-true suitors, it’s shocking how easy it was for him to lie to Mrs Kim. I genuinely think Dave is a pathological liar, and definitely not someone you want to be with forever, which brings us to…

Zack Was Actually A Great Guy

Image via WB

Truthfully, I always thought he was a loser who was obsessed with everything being “so rock and roll.” But he was actually always totally real and upfront about who he was, which is something that Mrs. Kim was able to respect despite their differences.

Richard Was The Real Villain Of Emily’s LASIK Surgery

Image via WB

I fully expected to feel like Lorelai was in the wrong during my most recent rewatch (although she’s no angel here — you're mom can’t see, stop complaining and help her out!), but the real villain here is Richard. Who leaves their wife for a business trip after a botched eye surgery? He’s back at the firm by this point (a global company) and could have easily had someone else step in to take the meeting instead.

Rory Dropping Out Of Yale Wasn't The Worst Thing Ever

Image via WB

As a teen, this seemed crazy. Why would Rory give up on her dream and throw her life away?! But as an adult who, like Rory, went through personal trauma during her college years, took time off, and eventually went back and finished school, I see things differently now. Success is not linear, and everyone’s path is different. When you’re that focused, it’s even more important to take a breather and recalibrate.

Mrs Kim’s Parenting Skills Shine When Lane And Rory Both Face Setbacks

Image via WB

I love Rory and Lorelai’s relationship (it’s so similar to mine and my own mother’s!), but they didn't respect each other’s opinions when they disagreed. From Lorelai freezing Rory out after she wanted to give up and take time off of Yale (again, just a semester — and so not a big deal!) to Rory refusing to hear out Lorelai’s side and listen to her advice, this feels off for two people who love each other so much. Especially when juxtaposed with Lane’s and Mrs. Kim’s drama on-going in the same episode.

At the end of season 5, Lane also wanted to give up on her dream (being a drummer in Hep Alien) and move back home, but Mrs. Kim surprised us all by stepping up and proclaiming, “So you’re giving up? Then you are not the daughter I raised!” And she proceeds to help Lane and the band go on tour across the East Coast. Even if it’s not the vision Mrs. Kim had for her only daughter, she’d rather have a happy daughter than a miserable one who accepts defeat.

Lane and her mother always had a different dynamic than the other mother/daughter duos on the show. While they’re not as close as Rory and Lorelai, Mrs. Kim always had her daughter’s respect. It’s interesting how Lane and Rory both experienced setbacks and wanted to give up their dreams, but Mrs. Kim ultimately stepped up while Lorelai lost touch with her daughter for months.

Season 7 Christopher Was A CATCH

Image via WB

Younger me hated Christopher for coming between Luke and Lorelai (really though, that was all Lorelai), but Christopher achieved excellent character development over the course of seven seasons. He truly gets Lorelai, from planning the perfect date to involving her in his life in a real way, which Luke was never able to do. They may not have been endgame but he was great for that moment in time.

The Abortion Convo...Er, Lack Thereof

Image via WB

Lane gets pregnant at 22, and she explicitly says she isn’t ready for the baby and that there’s so much more she wants to do first before kids. Lane is a small town girl, so she may not have known her options, but she has a worldly best friend who’s sexually experienced, well-traveled, and Ivy League educated.

So what wonderful advice does Rory give her friend in distress? She assures her that she will be a GREAT mom and to stop worrying. This is uncomfortably tone deaf, and a real way that Rory failed Lane as a friend and fellow woman.

In a later conversation, Zach and Lane both agree that they’re broke, totally unprepared, and that “this baby sucks.” But they just decide to suffer through it and don’t discuss any other options.

As a teen with limited life experience, this made sense during my first viewing. But as an adult woman in a post-Roe v Wade world, I’m floored this storyline was ever approved without even the slightest mention of the A-word.

Judging Sherry Was Way Harsh

Image via WB

Personally, I cringe every time Lorelai and Rory bring up the point that “mani-pedi-twice-a-week Sherry” can’t possibly be a good mom. I know she’s supposed to be the villain who “stole” Christopher from Lorelai —only for us to later see things through Christopher’s POV only — but these characterizations did not age well. Realistically, Sherry is a career-driven woman who screwed up and married a guy who’s an absent father to both of his children — and she finally decided to put herself first.

FacebookTaylor Swift's Eras Tour may have officially come to a close, but she only just revealed one of the biggest mysteries of the $2 billion cultural phenomenon: her cleaning cart. If you're confused, let me break it down for you really quickly. Every night of the tour, Taylor Swift had to sneak onstage before the show, and fans predicted very early on that she hid in a cleaning cart that crossed the grounds shortly before everything started. It quickly became tradition for concert-goers to cheer every time the cart made its nightly pilgrimage to the stage, applauding for what they assumed to be their favorite singer taking her place backstage.

While she confirmed her makeshift vehicle in the "I Can Do It With A Broken Heart" music video, she's finally giving us a peek behind the curtain — or rather, the cleaning cart. Here's what she posted!

Scroll to see what the inside of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour cleaning cart actually looks like!

Instagram/TaylorSwift

Taylor looks totally adorable, posing in her opening set body suit while sitting on a black chair in the cleaning cart. While understanding how the "August" singer got around in the cart would have been enough for me, there's plenty more inside to unpack, too. Here's everything I noticed in the cart:

  • A floral cat illustration: Such classic cat-lover behavior.
  • Printed out "Animals of the Day" flyer featuring Olivia, Meredith, and Benjamin: She's such a proud cat mom!
  • A painting of a waterside town: Fans pointed out all over social media that this is potentially Cardiff, one of her many stops on the tour.
  • More hanging and taped-up decor: I'm dying to know what else Taylor wants to see before she hits the stage!
  • A little gold and red trinket on a ledge: Is Taylor a trinket girl?!
  • A little fan in the corner: And thank goodness, because you know that girl puts in hard work on that stage!
Is there anything I missed? Let me know in the comments!
