Making Life More Fun, Interesting, And Beautiful With Jill Andrews

jill andrews interview

As fans of live music and independent artists making their way in a new world, we're thrilled to kick off a new artist spotlight series with Nashville-based singer-songwriter, Jill Andrews. Keep reading to learn more about the creative origins behind her latest EP, Ellen, and what fuels her artistic practice.

Brit + Co:What creative project are you currently working on and how does it inspire you?

Jill Andrews: I’m currently finishing a new record. I’m getting it mixed right now. It is so fun to see how the songs have blossomed from when I first wrote them. The different musical elements that we added have served to expand the emotional landscape of each one.

B+C:How do you find creative inspiration for your music?

JA: I normally find the inspiration for my music in the mundane features of everyday life. Conversation and people watching can be huge sources of inspiration.

B+C: What things do you feel confident DIY-ing in your craft and when do you ask for help?

JA: I am big into trying to DIY everything in the creative part of my career. However, I often realize that having other people's input and help can be very beneficial. I have recorded some on my own, made a music video with my husband ("Gimme the Beat Back" — very DIY), and dabbled in some photography (the cover for my EP Vultures). I find that it's a great exercise for me to try it myself first and then if I get stuck, I can always ask for help and I often do.

B+C:How do you make time to hone your creative muscle?

JA: I find that being creative is part of my daily life. I feel creative when I cook, garden, play with my kids, write, and hang out with my friends. I am always thinking of ways to make things more fun, more interesting, and more beautiful.

B+C:Do your best creative projects/songs start when you get inspired on your own or by another's creativity?

JA: I find inspiration from others a lot. I may hear a story, see a movie, hear a song that someone else has created and it may stay with me, even in an unconscious way and find its way into my own work in a small way when I'm writing on my own.

B+C:How has your creative perspective and motivation evolved since you first shared your skills with the world?

JA: I've been writing for over twenty years and I have lived a lot of life in that time. I started writing when I was basically a kid with very little experience in the world to now where I have traveled a lot, had many relationships both romantic and platonic, I've lost friends and family, and I have had children. I think that every new experience has served to make me a richer songwriter.

B+C:What is your secret superpower that you are really good at that we'd never know about?

JA: I am good at making up games. My kids are good inspiration for that. We like to do a thing I call a progressive drawing where someone draws a few lines, or shapes and then passes it to the next person. They add to it and so on and so on. It's cool to see what it ends up looking like.

B+C: What is a social cause that you care about and how can folks best get involved in their own communities?

JA: I care a lot about kids getting enough food. Gardening can be a good way to share with members of your community. It's easy to give out vegetables that you've grown especially when your harvest is large.

More About Jill Andrews from Olivia Management:

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Jill Andrews gives the unsung moments the voice they have always deserved. From her days fronting lauded Americana group, the everbodyfields, to her successful solo career as a writer and performer, Andrews’ music has taken her far from her East Tennessee home.

She has collaborated and shared the stage with countless celebrated artists including the Avett Brothers, Langhorne Slim, Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors, and the Secret Sisters. Her music has been featured on Grey’s Anatomy, This is Us, The Good Wife, Nashville, and Wynonna Earp to name a few.

After the success of her critically acclaimed 2020 album and book, Thirties, Jill decided to dig back into her songwriting catalog. Her most recent release, Ellen, is one that feels as if it lives in a middle space between where she has been and where she is going as a musician, songwriter, mother, wife, and friend. The six songs on the EP were mostly recorded when she first moved to Nashville, while still finding her footing in a town filled with some of the music industry’s most talented people. She had just started co-writing and recording with incredibly prolific writers and musicians (Trent Dabbs, K.S. Rhoads, Shawn Camp, etc.) and was still playing with some longtime friends like Josh Oliver (the everybodyfields, Watchhouse) and Ethan Ballinger (Miranda Lambert). Then, last year while the whole world was on pause, Andrews took the opportunity to focus on uncovering those songs. With hours of work put into rerecording, mastering, and fine tuning these songs, thus came Ellen.

Andrews currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee with her children Nico, Falcon, and husband, Jerred. Jill is currently touring this fall in support of her music with Clem Snide.

Vision boards are one of the most effective tools that you can use to build your business, your life, and your hobbies and I'm so excited to get my 2025 vision board going! Thoughtfully done, this process brings shape to dreams and emotions you're aiming for in the weeks and months ahead. Simply going through the process can bring clarity to your thinking, focus to your plans, and can leave you with a curated visual + tangible reminder of the life you want to build. But not only is the finished product fun to look at — the process is fun to make!

Here's how to get started to create your own vision board for 2025.

SUPPLIES

Brit + Co

Surface

I love white or black foam core board for creating vision boards. There are LOADS of sizes and options for this, so have fun picking the right one for you.

Adhesive

Glue sticks, Washi tape or pushpins work equally well. I prefer something non-permanent so I can revise my board as the year moves along.

Cutting tools

X-acto knife, ruler, scissors or a paper cutter are all great tools to have on hand.

Images

Magazines, old books, photographs all work well.

Set the vibe

A good playlist to inspire creative vibes, a big work area (floors work great for this!) and light some candles to keep it dreamy and inspiring.

Nosh and nourish

A cheese board, some wine, and good chocolate. All things are better with chocolate, right?

GET TO MAKING

Brit + Co

Set an intention. Or many.

I like to make one vision board for my entire world — work, family, love, hobbies, wellness, travel. Others prefer to have a separate vision board for each area of their life, or to only focus on one for the entire year. Let your intuition guide you here and decide the best approach for you. Really think about what you want to accomplish in the coming year. What emotions do you want to feel more of? Less of? How do you want to live?

You might find it best to journal about this prior to starting the image-gathering process to really bring clarity to mind. This intentional thinking will be important as you select images for your 2025 vision board. Try some Winter Journal Prompts For Improving Your Relationship or go for Emma Watson's Daily Journal Prompts!

Brit + Co

Curate images.

Find images that support your intention, and the life you want to build in the year ahead. Images should not just portray the WHAT of what you want, but also the EMOTION. The colors, people, and objects that show up on your final board should bring a smile to your face. I collect LOTS of images in a Pinterest board when I'm in the intention setting phase to have an abundance to choose from as I start my planning. Great resources for images are favorite blogs, Pinterest, Instagram, and Unsplash — really any image that speaks to you is vision board worthy.

Brit + Co

Build your 2025 vision board.

A reminder, this board is JUST FOR YOU so arrange the images in a way that speaks to your soul. You could organize each area by focus (work or home, for example.) Or let the colors of the images guide you in how they are arranged. There is no right or wrong way to do this — so just arrange and rearrange until you find what works for you. Stick the images to your surface once you've found a layout that you love.

Brit + Co

Find a home for your board.

Pick a spot in your home or workspace that you'll see your board regularly. The magic of this work comes in not just the building, but the visual reminder it gives you to give your time, energy, and resources to the things that support the life you want to build.

Brit + Co

Review often.

I'm a big fan of viewing these boards as evolving pieces of work. Take time to review it often and rearrange, add, or remove as needed to keep it as aspirational and inspiring as you need to move you toward your goals.

Giving yourself space, time, and a creative outlet to dream about your future is such a gift. One that can bring more positivity, intention, and purpose to your year ahead.

Don't let every December evening become a "Silent Night" – press play on our Christmas playlist! This Christmas playlist is the perfect companion to have on in the background while you're setting up the tree, decorating Christmas cookies, or wrappinggifts. I made sure to include a mix of traditional (think Bing Crosby) and contemporary (hello, Spice Girls) Christmas tracks so that each and every play will have a variety, but still get you in the holiday spirit.

Listen to our Christmas playlist here.

"All I Want for Christmas Is You" – Mariah Carey

It’s tiIiiime! This song is literally everywhere during Christmas. Its catchiness is unavoidable, but I know you love it all the same. Mariah’s most popular Christmas song has *got* to be on repeat as you embrace all things red and green this winter.

"Last Christmas" – Wham!

Another undeniable Christmas classic, Wham!’s “Last Christmas” is a mainstay in my personal Christmas playlist. It’s equal parts cheery and nostalgic. It’s 80s vibes all the way. I even added Remi Wolf’s more recent cover of “Last Christmas” to our Christmas playlist for added vibes, because this track is one I can just listen to over and over again.

"It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" – Andy Williams

This song reminds me of New York City during the holiday season – not that I’ve experienced it for myself, but Andy Williams’ deep, soothing voice brings forth those elegant feelings I associate with Christmas movies that depict NYC, like Elf and Home Alone 2. It’s energetic and highly illustrative, and a must-listen every year.

"Blue Christmas" – Elvis Presley

Thanks to thePriscilla movie, the Elvis hype is way up in 2023. Work in his pouty “Blue Christmas” into your holiday song rotation this year to embrace the 50s aesthetic while you’re decorating the tree! Even if you’re not missing someone special this Christmas, the woeful lyrics are going to make you yearn.

"O Tannenbaum" – Vince Guaraldi Trio

This jazzy, Peanuts-approved instrumental track begs to be played as you’re sipping hot chocolate by the fire this Christmas. It provides a nice moment of calm no matter when you’re listening to it, which we all know is definitely needed amongst all the holiday hubbub.

"White Winter Hymnal" – Fleet Foxes

Though not explicitly a Christmas song, “White Winter Hymnal” by Fleet Foxes is a winter playlist staple. Its folky instrumental work and vocals really channel the coziness we all associate with Christmas season. The consistent harmonies and tambourine beats will certainly put you in a calm, spirited mood this year if this track isn’t already on your radar.

"Auld Land Syne" – Guy Lombardo

Typically played at the end of the year to ring in the New Year, the original rendition of “Auld Lang Syne” done by Guy Lombardo plays through silky-smooth brass and woodwind arrangements that everyone will confide in this Christmas season. This is another very calming track, so play it when you’re moving at a slower pace.

"Mele Kalikimaka (Merry Christmas)" – Bing Crosby

www.youtube.com

- YouTube

This island-inspired Christmas song is the epitome of jolly. The driving guitar and drums back Bing Crosby’s classic voice to create an energetic song option this season.

"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" – Judy Garland

This Judy Garland number is a classic! Her very lyrical, emotional way of delivering the spirited lyrics transport you to mid-century Christmas, when the track first appeared in Meet Me in St. Louis.

"Christmas Wrapping" – Spice Girls

It wouldn’t be a B+C playlist without a little 90s throwback! In this song, the Spice Girls cover the classic Christmas song that was originally sung by early-80s band, The Waitresses. It has that fun Y2K twist to get you groovin’!

Viewers who were ready to watch Meghan Markle's new Netflix showWith Love, Meghan January 15 will have to wait just a little bit longer. Meghan decided to delay the show in the midst of the L.A. wildfire crisis, focusing on being more of a good samaritan and placing her focus on the cataphoric fires that have demolished parts of L.A. Here's what to know about the delayed release of With Love, Meghan — plus, Meghan's efforts to provide L.A. wildfire relief!

Scroll to find out everything you need to know about Meghan Markle's With Love, Meghan release date!

When is the new premiere date of 'With Love, Meghan?'

According to Netflix, With Love, Meghan will now premiere March 4.

What has Meghan Markle said about delaying her show?

We're sure Meghan Markle was excited to share her love for cooking and living in California, but the Duchess is more concerned about the tragedy occurring in L.A. She said, "I’m thankful to my partners at Netflix for supporting me in delaying the launch, as we focus on the needs of those impacted by the wildfires in my home state of California," via Netflix.

What have critics said about 'With Love, Meghan?'

Meghan's decision and comment about it come on the heels of some people expressing their dislike for the show. Just last week, Meghan McCain shared her own thoughts about With Love, Meghan.

In a rather length X post, she started by saying, "I was originally a Meghan Markle supporter, I thought she was cool, stylish and refreshing." Her tone quickly changed because she believes Markle not only "disrespected the royal family," but McCain also believes Markle "wants to be American again instead of British aristocracy."

She called the trailer for With Love, Meghan "highly curated, produced, and out of touch" because of the "2 terror attacks in 2 days, major wars raging" and the fact people are facing high grocery prices. As if that weren't enough, McCain decided to throw in, "This is why the world doesn’t like you, nothing else. Just completely and utterly tone deaf to the moment" which feels more based on an emotional opinion than fact.

While this criticism came before the terrible L.A. fires struck, it's in line with a lot of criticism Meghan's faced since. However, PEOPLEspoke with an "industry insider" about why they feel Meghan Markle truly decided to delay With Love, Meghan. "Delaying the release of With Love, Meghan was likely an easy decision for her. I don’t think she could imagine putting out a show centered on joy and hosting when so many people in her home state no longer have homes to host people in," the source said.

They also touched on the continued criticism the Duchess is once again facing for her decision not to premiere her show right now. "I think it’s sad that critics are saying she’s only doing this to avoid the fires overshadowing her show. We’re all human, and we’re dealing with a catastrophe."

How have Meghan Markle and Prince Harry been helping those affected by the L.A. fires?

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are doing their best to help those who have been displaced by the L.A. fires. They've since made their California home a safe haven for those who have been displaced and have been actively assisting in other ways.

For one, they showed up at the World Central Kitchen in Pasadena, California to "help distribute food and supplies to victims of the Eaton fire" last Friday, January 10 (via PEOPLE). At the time, Mayor Victor Gordo said the couple cared about being "as helpful as they can be" and that "they took the time to meet the people that are affected."

They've also listed resources for those who are inspired to help victims as well on their official Sussex site.

We commend Meghan Markle for doing everything she can to assist with L.A. wildfire relief, and TBH we think that's what others should be focused on instead of critiquing her every move.

What's happening astrologically during January 12-19, 2025?

Julio Lopez

Mars, the planet of action, takes center stage this week, influenced by several important transits. Prepare for heightened emotions and increased activity. The week begins with Mars forming a beneficial trine with Neptune, offering an opportunity to tap into intuition and take action guided by inner wisdom. Creativity will flourish, compelling us to produce, create, or invent. Prioritize self-care as the week intensifies, with Mars aligning with both the Sun and Moon. Strive for balance, love, and sensitivity in personal relationships, and practice kindness whenever possible.

Mars will be especially visible on January 13 and 14, moving in front of the full Moon in the eastern sky as the Sun sets. This rare occultation is a striking event, stirring primal energies that could lead to reactive and volatile responses. Avoid irritable or short-tempered individuals, and if you feel reactive, pause to recalibrate. Lean into your intuition and shift towards a more loving approach. With Mars and the Moon in nurturing Cancer, protective instincts for home and family will be strong. However, Mars’ intensity will also influence global events, eliciting deep emotional reactions.

Nikita Korchagin

On January 14, Mars and the Moon form a square with Jupiter, amplifying emotions further. The key to navigating this energy is to maintain balance and draw wisdom from your feelings. Adding to the dynamic is a trine between Uranus and the Sun, introducing abrupt changes and unexpected ideas. This energy supports bold moves, whether you’re contemplating a major life change or standing up for yourself. Stay mindful, as irritability may lead to rash or harsh actions. Mercury in Capricorn sextiles Saturn it's best to carefully and patiently craft a logical plan of action.

On January 19, the Sun moves into Aquarius, beginning a month-long journey through this innovative and humanitarian sign. Initially, the Sun aligns with transformative Pluto, reinforcing opportunities for change. Aquarius encourages intuitive problem-solving and unique solutions. It’s a hopeful, bright energy that highlights community collaboration, intelligence, and freedom. Themes of innovation and collective progress will take the forefront.
