Spike Your Sweets: John Daly Jello Shots

We’ll call this a late entry to last week’s tea theme, Father’s Day, and a nod to the US Open :)

Last week, we transformed one of our favorite summer drinks, an Arnold Palmer, into delicious lemon bars. But you know how we love to spike our sweets here at Brit.co… so we took it a step further with John Daly jello shots! The John Daly is a cocktail consisting of lemonade, iced tea, and bourbon, or lemonade, and sweet tea vodka. It’s basically an alcoholic Arnold Palmer.

Ingredients:
– 1/2 cup lemonade + 1/2 cup tea (or 1 cup Tazo Tea Lemonade)

– 2-3 tablespoons sugar (depending on how sweet you like it)

– 2 tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon juice

– 1.5 packets unflavored gelatin

– 2/3 cup lemon vodka (OR 1/3 cup lemon vodka + 1/3 cup sweet tea vodka)

-lemon slices (for garnish)

– toothpicks & construction paper (for garnish)

Instructions:

1. Lightly spray a mini muffin pan with non-stick cooking spray. Gently wipe away any excess residue with a paper towel.

2. Pour lemonade and tea (or substitute Tazo Tea Lemonade) into a small saucepan and stir in lemon juice or sugar. Sprinkle in gelatin and allow to sit a minute or two.

3. Heat on medium low, stirring occasionally until sugar and gelatin have completely dissolved. Remove from heat.

4. Stir in alcohol and pour mixture into prepared mini muffin pan. Allow to set at least 4 hours or overnight.

5. While jello shots are setting, make your mini flagstick garnish: Using construction paper, cut little triangles and write the number “19” on them. Using tape or a glue stick, attach to toothpicks.

6. When jello shots are set, gently run a knife around the edges of each cavity to help loosen. Place on top of a lemon slice, insert flagstick toothpicks and serve.

You know we love our mini muffin pan, so that’s what we used for these shots. Lightly spray the pan with non-stick cooking spray. Using a paper towel, wipe out the inside of each cavity. (This will leave just enough residue to help keep the jello from sticking).

Use a combo of tea and lemonade, or if you really want to make things easy… try this Tazo Tea Lemonade. As for the boozy portion… you can use lemon vodka or sweet tea vodka… or a combination of both!

Pour a half cup lemonade and a half cup tea into a small sauce pan (or a cup of the tea lemonade), and stir in lemon juice and sugar. Sprinkle with the gelatin and allow to sit a minute or two.

Heat on medium low, stirring occasionally, until sugar and gelatin have completely dissolved. Remove from heat.

Stir in alcohol and pour into prepared mini muffin pan. Allow to set at least 4 hours or overnight.

Using construction paper, cut little triangles, and write the number “19” on them. (The 19th hole is always the best hole!) Using tape or glue sticks, attach to toothpicks to make a mini flagstick.

When jello shots are set, gently run a knife around the edges to help loosen. Place on top of a lemon slice, insert toothpicks and serve!

It wouldn’t be fall without a jug of fresh apple cider and an apple cider donut (or two!). But in addition to the classics, there are plenty of ways to use the spicy fall beverage for savory and sweet recipes alike. Here are the recipes we’ll be adding to our “to-cook” list immediately!

If there's one thing The Seaside Baker blogger Jackie Bruchez knows, it's the sweet spot between fresh ingredients and luxurious desserts. In her new cookbook, Decadent Fruit Desserts($22), there is a little something comforting for everyone in more than 60 recipes, such as grilled peaches and a banana-chocolate pot de crème with cognac sauce. At the heart of each recipe is a key fruit ingredient, meant to shine as the star of the show. Bruchez elaborates in the intro of her book, “Transforming fruit, be it apples or oranges or more exotic varieties like dragon fruit, into a decadent, sophisticated, blow-your-mind dessert is the revelation I want to share with you." You don't have to just take our word for it. The paloma tart recipe below takes the tequila-grapefruit drink and morphs it into a bright and snappy multi-layered fruit tart.

Paloma Tart

(Serves 8-10)

Baker's Note: When making the curd, it is necessary to whisk the egg yolks and sugar before adding the citrus juice to avoiding curdling.

Ingredients:

Crust:

  • nonstick cooking spray
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon lime zest, freshly grated
  • 1/2 cup coconut, shredded
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

Grapefruit Tequila Curd:

  • 6 egg yolks
  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon grapefruit zest
  • 2 cups grapefruit juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoon unsalted butter, cold
  • 1 tablespoon tequila, optional

Whipped Cream:

  • 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream, cold
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon lime zest, freshly grated
  • lime and grapefruit wedges, for garnish

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly spray a 9-inch fluted tart pan with nonstick cooking spray.

2. Make the crust. In a large bowl, mix the powdered sugar, flour, salt, lime zest, and coconut until they're well blended, about 30 seconds. Add the butter and lime juice; mix to combine them until moist clumps form. Press the dough into the bottom and up the sides of the pan.

3. Bake the crust until it's golden brown, about 23 to 25 minutes. Cool it for 10 minutes.

4. While the crust is cooling, make the curd. In a heavy-bottomed, medium-sized pot, whisk the egg yolks and sugar until it's light and pale. Whisk in the salt, grapefruit zest, juice, and cornstarch. Place the pot on the stove over medium heat and cook the curd until it thickens and coats the back of a spoon, about 5 minutes. Remove it from the heat; stir in the butter, one tablespoon at a time, and then add the tequila, if using.

5. Pour the warm curd into the crust; let it sit for 30 minutes, then transfer the tart to the refrigerator to chill for at least 1 hour.

6. Right before serving, make the whipped cream. Beat the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and lime zest on high until stiff peaks form.

7. Dollop the cream onto the tart and garnish it with lime and grapefruit wedges.

It looks like we'll just be getting Jacob Elordi movies for the rest of time, and honestly, I'm thankful. (Even if that one cringy Kissing Booth scene still runs on a loop in the my brain). Before Swift Horses with Daisy Edgar Jones, Jacob is teaming up with another Hollywood titan you'll recognize from Pretty Woman: Richard Gere. And the movie looks incredibly emotional.

Here's all the latest info on Jacob Elordi and Richard Gere's brand new movie Oh, Canada.

What is the Oh Canada movie about?

Oh, Canada Plot

Oh, Canada follows the life of legendary (albeit fictional) filmmaker Leonard Fife. This story probably approaches Leo's career the way we think about Steven Spielberg's. AKA, he's very important. Leonard decides to tell his life story before he runs out of time. And even though he's got an impressive resumé, he also has to decide if he wants his Vietnam draft dodge and sticky relationships to become public knowledge.

"Leonard sits for an extended interview with his former student Malcolm (Michael Imperioli), relating candid stories about his younger self (Jacob Elordi) in the tumultuous 1960s and beyond," the synopsis says, adding that "at Leonard’s insistence, his wife and indispensable artistic partner, Emma (Uma Thurman), bears witness to it all."

How to watch Oh Canada?

Oh, Canada Release Date

Jacob Elordi's new movie is coming to theaters December 6, 2024 — the same day as Rachel Zegler's Y2K and Amy Adams' Nightb—ch!

Who's in the movie?

Kino Lorber

Oh, Canada Cast

The cast of Oh, Canada includes Richard Gere, Jacob Elordi, Uma Thurman, Michael Imperioli, and Victoria Hill, while the movie is written and directed by Paul Schrader (who also worked with Richard on 1980's American Gigolo!

What has the cast said about the movie?

Uma Thurman has been vocal about how excited she is to be a part of the project and told Deadline the movie feels like a "reverie" and has a "lyrical, sort of loosely knit, poetic" quality about it.

"The cinematic hand of Paul, of course, carried the day, as far as bringing this sort of illusionary dream together into something that you walk away from with the strong impression of a story," she says. "Just the presence of a master like Paul Schrader on a set of any size, is as distinct as, I don’t know, a warm wind. It’s like the wind that hits you when you get off a plane in the tropics. There’s only one thing of its ilk, and he’s kind of a master like that. You could really be anywhere; you can’t miss it."

That sounds like my kind of movie.

Director Paul Schrader revealed he fell in love with Jacob's performance the moment he saw him — which was before he took the world by storm in Priscilla. “I saw his performance on Zoom and, if this was 40 years ago, this is the guy I would have cast for American Gigolo,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
