The 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on Monday, September 17, but dozens of trophies were given out at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards this past weekend. John Legend nabbed a historical win on Sunday night, not only sealing his EGOT status but also becoming the first Black man to do so.
“It’s kind of surreal. It’s something I never even thought about when I started my career,” Legend told ET after winning the Outstanding Variety Special award for Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert alongside Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. “I probably wanted to win some Grammys and sell a lot of records, and all that started happening pretty quickly, but I never dreamed that I would be here, winning an Emmy, and being in that rare group of people that have won all four of these major [awards].”
An EGOT refers to someone who has won awards at the Emmys, the Grammys, the Oscars, and the Tonys. Legend already has an impressive 10 Grammys to his name, a 2015 Oscar for his Selma song “Glory,” and a 2017 Tony for his work as a co-producer on Jitney. He’s also nominated in the Outstanding Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category for his role as Jesus in the live NBC show at the Primetime Emmys next week.
Chrissy Teigen took to Instagram shortly after her husband’s EGOT win, posting a photo of herself kissing Legend on the cheek and writing, “My incredible man. What a surreal life.” She later shared a video of him placing his award on a shelf at home, which she captioned with an Arthur reference: “And I say hey, what a wonderful kind of day.” Because of course.
