These 7 Iconic Julia Roberts Movies Will Make You Miss the '90s

julia roberts movies

When I think of the '90s, I immediately starting going down the list of my favorite, iconic romcoms. The romcom was a '90s revolution, with some of our favorites gracing the screen to navigate heartbreak, romance, and more. But one actress in particular appeared in almost all of the best ones, and I bet you know who! That's right: Julia Roberts! The queen of the meet-cute!

She's been in classic movies like Notting Hill, Pretty Woman, and Ocean's Eleven. But some of her all-time best films happened to be in the '90s — and TBH most of them are my guilty pleasure romcoms. So, I decided to make a list of the best Julia Roberts movies so you can binge them all this week! You're gonna wanna press play immediately!

Which movie made Julia Roberts famous?

Image via MGM Studios

Julia Roberts, who just starred in Netflix's Leave The World Behind, became famous from her coming-of-age film Mystic Pizza (1988). It follows three young girls after they graduate high school and navigate their lives through love, fun, and work at a pizza parlor post-school. It's a cult classic, and definitely the movie that solidified Roberts' career as an actress.

What is Julia Roberts' biggest movie?

Image via Touchstone Pictures

Julia Roberts' biggest film to date is Pretty Woman. It's her highest earnest box office movie at around $436 million world-wide, making it the 4th highest grossing film of all time, just coming in behind E.T. It's a classic and for good reason!

The Best Julia Roberts Movies To Watch RN

Pretty Woman

This movie gets better and better with every single re-watch. This romantic comedy features Julia Roberts (Vivian), a call girl who happens to meet Richard Gere (Edward) one night. The pair strike deal for Vivian to accompany Gere's character for the whole week to any events he needs. But after spending time together and putting aside their judgements, feelings for each other begin to grow. The film is set in '90s Beverly Hills and it's nostalgic, fun, and oh-so-romantic. My #1 romcom and #1 Julia Roberts fave!

Notting Hill

This romcom is so beloved that hundreds of thousands of people visit the town in England to go to the exact store this movie filmed in. I actually did that last year, and it was just as cool as it seems. The romcom is about a movie star (Roberts) who hides from the paparazzi and fans in a bookstore that is owned by Hugh Grant's character. It's a simple romcom about love between people from two different worlds that have more in common than they think. You're a real fan if you can quote the "I'm just a girl standing in front of a boy" line.

Runaway Bride

The iconic Roberts and Gere duo is back at it again in this romcom about a woman who's left three different men at the alter because she always gets cold feet. Gere's character is NYC journalist coming to the small town to capture it for an article he's writing. Little does he know that the Roberts charm is unavoidable! He ends up falling for Roberts' character and they will have to wrestle with both of their fears of falling in love and letting go.

Image via Tristar Pictures

My Best Friends Wedding

Julia Roberts and Robert Mulroney star in this classic about falling in love with your best friend. In this film, the two best friends make a pact to get married if they're not married by 28. But it gets complicated when Mulroney's character meets someone and falls in love. And now, four days before their 28th birthday, he gets engaged to be married. Roberts pulls all the stops in this film to get Mulroney's character to see how perfect they are for each other. This movie is hilarious and will have you singing "Say A Little Prayer" all week.

Image via Tristar Pictures

Hook

Not necessarily a romcom, this '90s film is absolute classic. It tells the story of grown-up Peter Pan (played by Robin Williams) returning to Neverland with Captain Hook after leaving behind the Lost Boys and Tinkerbell. Julia shows her diverse acting skills in this as miniature Tinkerbell displays an array of emotions from Pan leaving her behind. Another '90s classic starring Julia Roberts that you can't help but love.

Image via Columbia Pictures

Stepmom

Ed Harris and Susan Sarandon play a divorced couple and parents in this heartbreaking drama. Julia Roberts is the young lead dating Ed Harris' character, trying to build relationships with her boyfriend's children and ex-wife (Sarandon). The ex-wife ends up getting sick, leaving the whole family to come to terms with the heartbreak and come together to form an unconventional, but loving family dynamic. This movie will rip your heart out and put it back together in the most tragic way.

You weren’t the only one tearing up during90-minute finale of The White Lotus. Season 3 of Mike White’s series has officially concluded, with viewers left shocked, heartbroken, and all-around emotional. And it turns out, the cast felt the same (warning:lots of spoilers ahead).

In preparation for the series' end, Max took over the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village, California, to create a Thailand-inspired White Lotus wellness oasis. The retreat included cooking and mixology classes with Ketel One Vodka and Tanqueray Gin, meditation sessions, and a moving panel discussion (hosted by Queer Eye’s Tan France) with the ensemble after they, too, watched the finale for the first time.

During the cast’s Q&A, we got the tea on how Aimee Lou Wood truly felt about her character’s death, plus Patrick Schwarzenegger’s initial reaction to the explosive ending.

Scroll to see The White Lotuscast's reaction to that heartbreaking season 3 finale...

HBO

The White Lotus Cast's Reactions to Chelsea and Rick’s Death

As audience members know, Chelsea and Rick were the characters that met a gruesome end.

Wood said of her character’s death, “For about two weeks before we shot it, I felt super weird. It was this odd, ominous thing that was just hanging over us.” Her character is a casualty of an intense gunfight ignited by her boyfriend Rick (played by Walton Goggins), who attempted to save her by carrying her to safety. “And then it was the hottest day ever. Walton had to carry me so many times, and it was so hard.

In that time, Gaitok (Tayme Thapthimthong) achieves his vindication by shooting Rick in the back. “Chelsea doesn’t know what’s going to happen to her,” Wood said, adding that the scene “looked exactly how it felt, which was really strange.” There’s a final, dark shot of Chelsea dead, faced down in the pond and Rick faced up, mimicking a Yin and Yang symbol.

HBO

Meanwhile, Thapthimthong felt like his character’s actions were “justified.”

Thapthimthong said, “At first, I felt like, ‘I don’t want to shoot him in the back.’ I wish he would turn around and have a little gunfight with me so we can have a little action scene. But we had a discussion with Mike, and I remember he said, ‘Trust me,’ it will be justified. I feel like it really was.” Gaitok then goes on to receive the promotion he’s always wanted, so you can say things worked out for him.

HBO

Patrick Schwarzenegger, who arguably conveyed the biggest character arc in Saxon Ratliff, built a spiritual connection with Chelsea that translated IRL.

Schwarzenegger told France, “I knew something happened to Chelsea, but I didn’t know the extent of everything. It’s this really surreal weird feeling right now of just spending so much time with all of these cast members and then watching someone die. I don’t know how to describe it. You feel like something really happened.” We did too, Patrick, we did too.

As Aimee Lou Wood said on the panel, “There’s a lot in that episode that made me f---ing sob.” And we couldn’t think of a more perfect way to describe the series ending.

Other Can’t Miss Cast Quotes From The 'The White Lotus' Finale Panel:

HBO

Patrick Schwarzenegger (Saxon Ratliff)

“I think once it happened with Chelsea, I started crying in the theater. I looked over at Charlotte [Le Bon] — it was an emotional moment.”

HBO

Sarah Catherine Cook (Piper Ratliff)

“I was like, ‘Wow everyone in this episode really came to some enlightenment, and she’s trying to get enlightened the whole time.’ Then she’s like, ‘No, I guess I’m spoiled.’ I love that.”

HBO

Sam Nivola (Lochlan Ratliff)

“I've never died in anything before. It was fun to get to do that.”

HBO

Leslie Bibb (Kate Bohr)

“I remember when we were filming because the girls were the first ones to shoot our villa, and we all read the scripts and we were like, ‘Oh, our storyline is boring’....I don't think, honestly, we thought that it was going to take off the way it is.”

HBO

Nicholas Duvernay (Zion Lindsey)

“Finally getting even just a little bit of justice for Tanya was amazing. Amazing to finally, over three seasons, give her that closure, essentially."

HBO

Jon Gries (Greg Hunt)

“I think Season 2 surprised me more somehow. But I guess the enormity of the wealth surprised me.”

HBO

Jason Isaacs (Timothy Ratliff)

“I look at my kids I love in real life, these three, and I love them on screen as well. I think there’s more to them. I doubted them, and they will be fine. They just won’t be fine in gigantic houses with huge Tesla trucks.”

Evil not only consumes everything in its path, it also changes Smoke and Stack in ways they could've never prepared for.

According to PEOPLE, the actress shared more of her thoughts in her newsletter Beau Society March 28. She wrote, "...This role is far removed from what I've done, but that's part of what drew me to it! I feel like I'm stepping into my own more and more as I get older, and this role mirrors that."

She also shared that it didn't take much for her to be a part of Sinners. "The minute I heard Ryan Coogler, I was in. Then I read his script and was like, 'Holy s---, this feels like a massive undertaking.' The story is so complex and layered," calling herself "fortunate and honored to even be remotely considered." So, how does Hailee Steinfeld feel about Sinners as a whole?

She says it's "thrilling and sexy and daring and dangerous — with bold representations."

This story contains major 1923 season finale spoilers!

Okay y'all. I'm still reeling over the fact 1923 season 2 ended with Alex's death. She seemed invincible to me, and I had such hope that Alex and Spencer would spend the rest of their lives together. But after surviving a snowstorm, Alex ended up succumbing to the effects of frostbite and died in Spencer's arms. And all of us (including actors Brandon Sklenar and Julia Schlaepfer) were emotional.

Here's what Brandon Sklenar and Julia Schlaepfer said about Alex and Spencer's long-awaited reunion in the 1923 season finale — and the tragedy that followed.

What happened with Spencer and Alex on 1923?

Even though Spencer loses Alex at the end of 1923 season 2, I am glad they got to have one final reunion, and hold their baby together. "Losing his wife, his best friend, is really f—ing tragic," Brandon Sklenar tells The Hollywood Reporter. "The hospital stuff was incredibly emotional. Really, we had to come up with jokes because it was super heavy and it was a lot of crying. Too much crying, just crying all the time. A lot of crying!"

And the tears weren't just saved for those sad scenes; Brandon also cried when Alex and Spencer reunite in a dreamy 1920s afterlife where they can dance for eternity.

“It just hits me right in the heart every time, even just thinking about it now,” Brandon says. “I remember filming it and standing in the corner and just having to wipe my eyes because it was so beautiful."

How did Spencer and Alex reunite in 1923 season 2?

Fans were not happy about the fact these two spent all of 1923 season 2 apart — and Julia herself admitted to Brit + Co she "barely" saw Brandon while filming, and that "it was very much like, suddenly we were ripped apart. But that's what the characters are going through...It was very helpful as an actor because that's what they're going through as well."

Channeling that IRL experience also helped for Alex and Spencer's reunion; When Alex is stranded after a snowstorm and Spencer spots her from his train, he jumps into the snow to literally sweep her off her feet and carry her to safety. And the desperate and emotional reunion was desperate and emotional for a reason.

“It was the first scene we shot together this season, which I’m sure was not by accident,” Julia added in her and Brandon's conversation with THR. “When we got to film that scene, for both me and Alex, I felt like I exhaled.”

Did Alex get to meet Jacob Dutton?

But in a classic Taylor Sheridan plot twist, Alex and Spencer aren't together for long. Spencer sets off to help Cara and Zane protect the Yellowstone ranch, leaving Alex and Jacob to head to the hospital. And Julia loved having Harrison Ford with her during those intense scenes.

"It was everything I ever could have dreamed of, times a million. He took such care of me that day when I was fully intending on letting him completely take the lead," she says. "I was so excited and I learned so much watching him. But I think he knew what the content of the scene was, and he wanted to make sure I was good. He knew when to crack jokes at the right time to keep things light. At the end of the scene, we both just stared at each other and cried, and he held me while I was on that bed with this baby."

"I’m really still in the process of grieving everything that she went through, everything that I went through with her, because you really become one," she continues. "She’s a piece of me forever, and I don’t quite know how I will process everything this season, but I’m just trying to enjoy how beautiful and special playing Alex was. It was truly the gift of a lifetime."

Will Brandon Sklenar play Spencer Dutton again?

Even though Spencer and Alex's romance has come to an end, we are getting a 1944 — and Brandon's totally down to return.

"Yeah, definitely. I’d do it. [Their son John Dutton's] got to learn how to do things. Someone’s got to show him," he says, to which Julia replies, "I’ll come back and haunt you both."

As soon as the new Hunger Games book and movie, both titled Sunrise on the Reaping, were announced, I started dreaming about the movie cast. After all, the story, which takes place during the 50th Hunger Games and follows Katniss' mentor Haymitch, features double the amount of tributes — that means we're in for some amazing casting announcements! And the casting rumors so far are literally perfect.

Here's everything you need to know about the Sunrise on the Reaping cast rumors before the movie premieres in November 2026.

Who's in the Sunrise on the Reaping cast?

Charley Gallay/Getty Images for Netflix

We don't have an official casting announcement yet, but the internet is losing it over these totally perfect cast rumors:

  • Charlie Plummer as Haymitch Abernathy: a 16-year-old tribute in the 50th Hunger Games from District 12.
  • Ralph Fiennes as President Snow: President of Panem after serving as a District 12 mentor during the 10th Hunger Games.
  • Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee: a capitol cameraman working with District 12.
  • Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman: the man who hosts the interviews with the tributes.
The other Sunrise on the Reaping characters include Maysilee Donner, Wyatt Callow, Louella McCoy and Lou Lou, Lenore Dove, Wiress, Mags, Effie Trinket, Beetee, and Ampert. I would love to see Elle Fanning as Maysilee and Aimee Lou Wood as Effie!

What is Sunrise On The Reaping about?

The new Hunger Games movie is about 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy, who gets thrown in the 50th Hunger Games and has to survive both a poison arena and double the regular amount of tributes. Not to mention President Snow.
