Jane the Virgin’s Justin Baldoni on That Finale Shocker, Fatherhood, and Breaking Down Gender Stereotypes

Justin Baldoni has a lot on his plate right now. In addition to his starring role as Rafael on Jane the Virgin, he’s working on his own talk show, Man Enough; giving viral TED Talks on masculinity; and filming an upcoming movie — all while juggling the joys and challenges of life as a dad to two young kids, Maiya and Maxwell, whom he shares with wife Emily Baldoni.

Ahead, he gives us the scoop on that season 4 finale shocker, his thoughts on breaking down gender stereotypes, and what he’s doing to give his children their best chance at a happy, healthy future.

Brit + Co: We obviously have to talk about that wild Jane the Virgin finale. You probably can’t say much, but how long have you known about that twist, and what was your reaction when you found out?

Justin Baldoni: I found out with the rest of the cast, and my reaction was very similar to the fans’ reaction. I mean, I had a sneaking suspicion. Things were getting too good with Rafael and Jane, and nothing can ever be that good. And I remembered how good things got with Michael and Jane. And I think [showrunner] Jennie [Snyder Urman] did a great job of kind of laying these Easter eggs and kind of preparing the audience, if they were really paying attention to the details.

But you know, before Michael passed away, things were great. [He and Jane] were happy. And Jane and Rafael were getting very, very happy, and the show’s not over yet. So I knew something had to happen — either I was going to die, or he was going to come back. And I was hoping he was going to come back. And he did, which is fantastic. I just can’t tell anybody what form he’s come back in. I know there’s a lot of speculation. But it’s great. Brett’s one of my closest friends, and I just adore him as a human being and I think he brings a really cool element to our show and to the cast. He’s just a fun, free-spirited, goofball alien that I just love having around.

B+C: We’re Team Jane, first and foremost, but in terms of the love triangle, do you want Jane and Rafael to be endgame?

JB: Of course! Of course I want Jane and Rafael to be endgame. But at the same time, I can relate to both characters, and I can put myself in Michael’s shoes. Like, how heartbreaking would that be to be about to marry this girl and then have her artificially inseminated with this guy’s sperm? And at the same time, I can also understand and empathize with Rafael. Here he is, out of left field this happens, and it’s his only chance of having a baby, and it just happens to be this girl who rocks his world and shows him another way of living life. You know, he’s gone on a really big journey these last four seasons, and I’m excited to see what happens next.

B+C: Switching gears for a minute, let’s talk about your partnership with the National Peanut Board. You’re doing a video series with Maxwell based on the new guidelines about introducing peanut foods into kids’ diets to prevent an allergy. How did that come about?

JB: Well, we first heard about the LEAP study, which I thought was really interesting. And, you know, I think as parents, we’re always trying to figure out what’s the latest research and what are things we can do that could be great for our children and set them up for success. I grew up in a family where my sister had a lot of allergies to food. She’s pretty much allergic to everything, except peanuts, which is interesting. And I had a lot of friends growing up that had peanut allergies. And I’ve seen how crippling it can be, and how hard it can be, especially because, as we were growing up, there just wasn’t a lot of education or research about food and allergies in general.

So, growing up with all of that, Emily and I have been really cognizant about trying to just make sure that we’re giving Maxwell the best shot at a healthy life. And when we heard about this research … we thought, as long as it’s safe, we should give it a go. So we called our pediatrician, he validated the research and said it was a good idea, and we decided to do it. And now Maxwell is loving it. It was the first food he had outside of his mother’s breast milk, and it’s kind of like this little treat we give him a few times a week. And now we know it’s one less thing he’ll have to worry about throughout his life.

(Note: While the Baldonis chose peanuts as a first food in consultation with their doctor, the ACAAI recommends that peanuts be introduced after other solid foods. Parents should consult with their doctors about any concerns they have about food allergies.)

B+C: Why was it important for you to share this journey with people?

JB: To much is given, much is asked. And I’ve been really blessed. For some reason, I have this platform, and I try to use it in a way where I’m always really honest and talking about my struggles, and also my victories, and talking about the things that I believe in and promoting equality or healthy masculinity or parenting, and talking about my adoration for my kids and all these types of things. And for whatever reason, people have been drawn to what I have to say. So, if that’s the case, Emily and I have always discussed and talked about making sure that we’re always using our platform to be of service. … We try to find and identify partnerships that we believe can also be beneficial to other people. … This was one that we felt drawn to, because I do believe at the end of the day it can save lives.

(You can find more information about the new peanut introduction guidelines at PreventPeanutAllergies.org.)

B+C: You mentioned using your platform to do good. At Brit + Co, we try to use our platform to empower our readers. How do you hope to empower your kids, and especially your daughter, as they grow up? And on the subject of healthy masculinity, what do you want to teach your son?

JB: I grew up in the Bahá’í faith, and in the Bahá’í faith, we’re taught that the equality of women and men is paramount to the future success and well-being of the world. So for me, equality is — it’s in my bones. It’s in the foundation of who I am as a person because it stems from my faith. So growing up as a man in this world today, I think it’s kind of incumbent upon all of us men to make sure that we are advocating and, through our actions, being true allies to women.

As a father, it’s my job to make sure that I’m very aware of the way that I’m raising my daughter. Just like I need to be very aware of the way that I’m raising my son, and be mindful of the words that I choose to speak to my daughter and the words that I choose when I speak to my son. As a boy, then a teenager, and then as a man, I have my own unconscious biases toward the way that I talk to little girls and little boys. And it wasn’t until I became a parent that I even realized it.

As an example, calling my son “buddy” and my daughter “sweetheart,” I realized, “Oh, what am I doing there? I’m perpetuating this idea that he’s my tough little buddy and she’s my little sweetheart.” So I’ve actively decided to switch. I call my son my sweet boy — oh, my kind boy, oh, my sweet boy. And I play around with my daughter a little bit more, and I talk to her about how brave and how strong and how tough she is, and I ask her to show me her muscles. And with my son, I’m already starting to kind of do the opposite.

Because, look, the world is going to lead them into this kind of social construct that already exists. I can’t control the words that the teachers and the other kids and the other parents of the kids are going to use around my son and my daughter. They’re going to reinforce the typical gender norms. They’re going to reinforce how pretty my daughter is, and how pretty the dress is, and how nice she is and how sweet she is. And it’s my job to make sure she knows how intelligent she is, and how brave she is, and how wise and how patient — just all the things that other people might leave out. And the rest of the world’s going to tell my son how handsome he is, and how strong he is, and how tough he is. And it’s also my job at home to make sure that I reinforce and remind him how kind he is and how gentle he is and how soft he is and how sweet he is.

So that’s just one example of how I’m trying to reverse some of my own unconscious biases. And then the big thing, at the end of the day, is just treating them like humans. Not treating them like boys or girls, but giving them the same access to the same things.

B+C: That’s a good segue into your show Man Enough, which covers topics including body image and male vulnerability. What else is coming up?

JB: We’re getting ready to release a really big episode on sexual assault and harassment. And that’s a big one and it’s an emotional one and it’s a tough one and it’s a timely one. You know, to have six men at a table talking about their experiences and how they can be better, and in some cases, their own experiences on the other end of assault and/or rape. And also listening. Listening to women, and listening to their stories.

After only two episodes of Only Murders in the Building season 4, Hulu renewed the series for season 5! I'm so excited that the show breaks a recent pattern of cancelling shows after the third or fourth season, giving us more time with our favorite characters, and I'm not the only one.

"Here we go again… my favorite set family. I’m coming home!" Selena Gomez says in an Instagram post, while the official Only Murders account made their own post, saying, "We had our lawyers call business affairs. Turned the 4 into a 5. #OnlyMurdersInTheBuilding is coming back for Season 5!!"

Here's everything you need to know about Only Murders in the Building season 5, coming to Hulu soon.

What is Only Murders in the Building season 5 about?

Patrick Harbron/Disney

Only Murders in the Building Season 5 Plot

We finally got our first details about Only Murders season 5 — and we're going in a direction I totally didn't expect. When Sofia visits Mabel and Charles in the season 4 ending, and asks them to find her missing husband, she's disappointed when they turn her down. And since Téa Leoni just joined the season 5 cast, it looks like she's not taking no for an answer.

“I think she’s the great tease at the end of the finale and a little bit of an intriguing bump forward,” co-creator John Hoffman says in an interview with Deadline. “She’s an extension of the little news report in Episode 9 that Mabel makes note of at the hospital. [Sofia] is the wife of the Dry Cleaning King of Brooklyn, and maybe a couple of dry cleaning outlets in Manhattan, as well, we may come to know...It’s a world opened up potentially that we haven’t talked about too much yet in New York, so she holds a lot of intrigue.”

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

New York's underground is a wild space that we haven't really seen on Only Murders yet so I know we're in for one very interesting season — because if this show is going to go there, they're going to go there.

Executive producer Dan Fogelman told The Wrapwe can look forward to “another big fun mystery the writers have been cooking up," while Hoffman has gone on the record saying the new episodes will “hit on some very current things going on within New York, specifically very relevant things that are happening in the city right now.”

When is Only Murders in the Building season 5 coming out?

Only Murders in the Building Season 5 Release Date

According to The Wrap, Only Murders is looking to begin production on season 5 in March of 2025. Considering we've had a new season over the last four years (with season 1 in 2021, season 2 in 2022, season 3 in 2023, and season 4 in 2024), we're expecting to see season 5 in 2025. Stay tuned for the official Only Murders in the Building season 5 release date.

Who's in Only Murders in the Building season 5?

Eric McCandless/Disney

Only Murders in the Building Season 5 Cast

The cast of Only Murders in the Building includes Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin. Téa Leoni will also return as Sofia Caccimelio, whose husband Nicky has gone missing.

According to Dan Fogelman, “we can expect more big guest stars that’ll probably be announced sooner rather than later,” he tells The Wrap.

Season 3 featured Ashley Park, Paul Rudd, Meryl Streep, and Jesse Williams, while season 4 stars Streep, Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria, Kumail Nanjiani, Desmin Borges, Siena Werber, Lilian Rebelo, and Molly Shannon.

"I am so grateful that I have been surrounded by human beings that make me better, challenge me, remind me day after day that every moment is a gift," Selena Gomez says about working with Martin and Short. "That’s my pure joy. I thank god for the era I’m in. It’s been the best yet."

Will there be an Only Murders in the Building season 5?

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

Yes, Only Murders in the Building has been renewed for season 5! On September 4, Variety confirmed the next installment will have 10 episodes, just like the seasons before it. The latest season premiered on Hulu August 27, and will last until October 29 (just in time to try out an Only Murders Halloween costume!)

Just like the season 3 ending set up season 4, we'll have to wait for the October finale to figure out what kind of mayhem Mabel, Oliver, and Charles will get into next season. "We hope you like it!" Selena Gomez says in the Only Murders in the Building account's announcement, while Martin Short adds, "How exciting is that?"

"We're so exciting to be coming back," Steve Martin says. We're excited too!!

I’ve seen (and indulged in) so many food trends in my day, and at this point, it can take a lot to really impress me. That being said, there’s one simple hack on the rise right now that truly has me in a chokehold – people have started adding matcha to their McDonald’s milkshakes, and it’s totally transformed how I see mass-produced milkshakes from here on out.

Scroll on to discover the viral milkshake hack that’ll have your matcha cravings running wild!

Nataliya Vaitkevich / PEXELS

As a certified matcha freak (yeah, I said it), I've been disappointed at the lack of matcha offerings amongst fast food giants like McDonald's, Wendy’s, In-N-Out, and more. Of course, Starbucks and Dunkin’ scoop out matcha on the daily, but it never comes in true dessert form!

@eatsbyrachel

That’s where this viral milkshake hack comes in – foodies have been pulling up to the drive-thru with their own doses of matcha prepped and ready, then adding it to vanilla or even strawberry milkshakes. Oh, yum! The matcha turns the frozen treats a gorgeous green color, and of course, gently caffeinates each sip.

Matheus Henrin / PEXELS

I think any theoretical matcha dessert offering from popular destinations like McDonald’s or In-N-Out would surely see an up-charge if the chains were adding in the green powder themselves, so I’m also stoked about this new method from the perspective of affordability.

Anna Pou / PEXELS

This hack also presents those who are not yet totally sold on matcha (um, how?!) with an accessible way to enjoy the powdered green tea blend. Matcha drinks have an infamous reputation for tasting either too grassy or too bitter (or both), so mixing it into a milkshake sweetens up each sip to the point that it doesn’t taste at all like a traditional latte – but a full-on dessert!

Taylor Musser / Dupe

You can apply this super easy food hack to just about any milkshake from any chain that sells milkshakes like McDonald’s, Wendy’s (need me a Frosty, stat), In-N-Out, Dairy Queen, Sonic, and more. I suggest you pick your favorite place and try it out ASAP!

Audiences loved the way Greta Gerwig's Little Women brought all four March sisters to life, and Netflix's Anne with an E became so popular that when the show was canceled after season 3, 1.7 million fans signed a petition to revive the series. It all just proves that classic adaptations can make the original story even more powerful.

And the newest movie based on a book is going to be one we think about forever — and not just because of its cast. Emerald Fennell (who you'll recognize from The Crown and her work as writer & director on Satburn) is adapting Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights and Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi are leading the cast!

The book, published in 1847, continues to grip readers, and it's become the blueprint for moody complexity — just like Emerald Fennell's Promising Young Woman, which won the Oscar for Best Screenplay thanks to its scathing look at sexual assault. Well, the Em's are coming together for this new adaptation.

Here's everything we know about Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights — and your first look at the movie.

Here's Your First Look At 'Wuthering Heights'

The first look at Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights is getting some seriously mixed reactions. The photo features a close-up image of someone (maybe Margot Robbie's) with their fingers and a few blades of grass in their mouth.

"CAN NOT WAIT," one Instagram user said, along with a couple fire emojis. But the intimate (and somewhat shocking) image also has some users asking, "what in the saltburn?"

Is Wuthering Heights going to be in theaters?

Focus Features

It appears director Emerald Fennell and producer Margot Robbie are pushing for a theatrical release, which is why they've reportedly turned down a Netflix offer of $150 million.

Despite the fact Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said theatrical releases are "just not our business," and the company has stuck to at-home streaming instead, they did break that pattern for Knives Out: Glass Onion in 2022. The movie appeared in around 600 theaters the day before Thanksgiving, but left a week later ahead of its December 23 debut on the streamer.

Co-CEO Reed Hastings told The Hollywood Reporter that keeping the movie in theaters could have made Netflix more money, but later said they just wanted to "break through the noise" and get movie lovers excited for the film to come to Netflix.

All that to be said, Margot Robbie (whose Barbie made over $1 billion worldwide) and Emerald Fennell (whose Promising Young Woman nabbed her an Oscar win and two other nominations) know how to capture the imaginations of movie lovers everywhere. And it could definitely be in their favor to stick to a theatrical release. Stay tuned for official news on where you can watch Wuthering Heights!

Wuthering Heights Cast

The Wuthering Heights movie will be led by Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie as Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, respectively. Margot will also produce with her production company LuckyChap, which worked behind the scenes on Emerald Fennell's Saltburn and Promising Young Woman.

While some fans were initially excited about the casting, others were concerned about the fact that in the book, Heathcliff is described as "dark skinned." He also tells Nelly that, "I wish I had light hair and a fair skin, and was dressed, and behaved as well, and had a chance of being as rich as he will be!" Um, it looks like Jacob Elordi definitely has fair skin to me.

"Heathcliff is described as a dark-skinned brown man in the book and a major plot point is that he was subjected to racist abuse by his adopted family," one tweet (which has over 8 million views) says. "But yeah sure Jacob Elordi is perfect!"

Another says, "Film studios will say 'We are committed to diverse casting' and then cast Jacob Elordi to play Heathcliff, one of the more famous people of color in literature, whose race is crucial to both his character and the story."

Check back here to see who will play characters like Edgar Linton, Nelly Dean, Isabella Linton, and Lockwood.

Wuthering Heights will premiere on February 14, 2026. Happy Valentine's Day!

Wuthering Heights Plot

Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights follows the Earnshaws and the Lintons, who are living in the Yorkshire Moors in the 1880s. Their lives change forever when the Earnshaws take in Heathcliff. Like any good dramatic novel, passion lies beneath proper connections, marriages, and societal expectations — and despite Catherine and Heathcliffe's feelings for each other, they have to choose between security and love.

Sarah J. Maas is keeping readers in the dark about ACOTAR book 6 book 6, but that hasn't stopped fans from sharing elaborate theories about its plot! Our favorite ones revolve around Feyre's middle sister Elain and her overdue POV. For five books, we've watched her live in the shadows of her sister even after being thrown into a cauldron by the despicable King Hybern. She's only shared glimpses of her personality, but that's nothing compared to what readers feels she deserves.

Here's what BookTok thinks about ACOTAR book 6 being the moment we see Elain step into her power or worse

The first theory that stands out is one TikTok user @savannahlueckk shared in this video. Her caption says, "i have a theory that everyone is going to switch up on her and love her all the sudden lmao," in regards to Elain. I don't think anyone truly doubts where she's loved, but it's clear they're not allowing her to come into her own either. From there, the text overlay on the video compares Elain to "Rapunzel," calling out how she's been "sheltered and underestimated by everyone around her."

The first comment on the video says, "She is going to be a whole different person once we get her POV and I can’t wait" while the second comment refers to Frozen 2's song "Into the Unknown." "...just her hearing voices and getting frustrated with them and what they mean as well and learning to embrace her seer powers," user @emlechoppaa wrote.

Another theory by @thundernoblechristine refers to Elain's naturally extroverted personality and how she's currently dealing with everything she's experienced. She says, "Elain is unique in that out of all three of these sisters, she is the most extroverted and she clearly likes making friends...So it makes perfect sense to explore Elain's story as someone who processes trauma and gets to know people differently than Nesta and Feyre."

Only one comment mentioned Elain's potential mate which is great! @imaginedrealism wrote, "As goofy as it sounds, I want Elian with none of the people she is shipped with. She deserves someone totally normal not apart of the Far royalty drama, & it would be more interesting to see..."

But, we're not above leaning into the "Elain and Azriel Endgame theory. Tiktok user @abi.reads2 made her own video about why she thinks Elain and Azriel are meant to be together. She starts off reading a passage from A Court of Mist and Fury before revealing there's a point where the book left by the queen mentions "sing me." @abi.reads2 then points out that Azriel is a "shadowsinger," meaning he's able to detect things most people are unable to.

But @Shelbyaj319 has other thoughts. "I think Elain will manipulate them [Lucien and Azriel] into a blood duel or died or whatever and start a war. I think she’s the villain. She should have already denied the bond [with Lucien] by now yet hasn’t," she says.

There's so many different theories that could be right, but only Sarah J. Maas knows how ACOTAR book 6 will end!
