Learn How to Faux Cross Stitch Using Fabric Paint!

Another day, another sneak peek from our book, Homemakers.

Just under a month ago, we celebrated the release of Homemakers. This domestic handbook for the digital generation takes you through a redefinition of the word “home maker” room by room, from the dining room to the kitchen to the bedroom and all the way to the back porch. The back porch chapter of our book is where some of our favorite makers have stopped by to share their own awesome projects for living more beautifully and creatively.

Studs & Pearls

avid DIY contributor here on Brit.co! In this project, Kirsten shows us how to use fabric paint to create a faux cross stitch design on a basic gray sweatshirt. It’s a method that can be applied to any piece of clothing, and we love the way that it mimics embroidery but takes a fraction of the time. But that’s all we can tell you for now — you’ll have to buy our book for the full how-to! ;) In the meantime, read on to learn what inspires her, how she got started and what’s on her studio playlist.

What inspires you? Why do you love to design, create and make?

The idea of making nothing into something has always amazed me. Far too often, we look at something for the way it’s presented to us — usually with a pre-established purpose or reason. Yet, that something can be so much more, and it comes down to how you use it.

I also love how any tutorial can go a million different ways, depending on the person that makes it. No two projects will be alike, even if the same instructions are followed. I’ve always believed that DIY is the best form of self-expression…nothing can represent you better than something you created.

Tell us about your blog.

Studs & Pearls is a DIY blog featuring edgy DIYs and creative inspiration. Projects include fashion, home decor, general crafts and sometimes even food. Expect tons of tutorials, ideas and bad craft jokes.

Tell us a little more about yourself.

Kirsten is an author, nutritionist and women’s lifestyle writer focusing on health, crafts and creativity. Since 2010, she has been sharing DIY projects at Studs & Pearls. In May 2014, Kirsten published a DIY book, Studs & Pearls: 30 Creative Projects for Customized Fashion. She was born and raised in New York, where she currently lives.

What’s one piece of advice you’d share with other makers?

Never stop doing whatever you do. Do it every single day, if you can. Even if it’s for 5 minutes. You don’t have to produce something totally groundbreaking each time, and it doesn’t even need to be share-worthy. Most of the time, it probably won’t be. But every little bit counts, and it will all add up to something. Your creative spirit needs to stay active, and it all comes down to how often you run with it.

Tell us how technology has changed and supported what you do.

Social media and blogging makes it so easy to inspire others, whether they’re next door or in another country — it’s a pretty amazing thing. The growing prevalence of super useful apps and programs makes the process efficient and easy, leaving room for the creative thought process to flourish.

What’s on your studio playlist?

My Spotify is full of heavier punk-oriented playlists that never fail to get me pumped for a busy day of creating. Descendents and Rancid are the two that are always on heavy rotation. But, depending on my mood, I love the indie tunes for the more laid back days: Cat Power’s discography, Banks (more alternative pop), BOY and Feist are some favorites.

How do you get into the creative flow? How does it feel?

Once a concept snaps together, it feels like a hundred light bulbs going off in my brain! Usually, the ideas start snowballing from there and it’s exhilarating to envision a new concept or approach. I’ve definitely said “OOOH!” out loud a couple times, too.

What do you love about teaching people to make? And inspiring people who don’t think they are traditionally creative?

I love helping others realize that they aren’t limited to what the world hands to them. Even though you choose what to buy at a mall or a store, the company still has control over what you can even choose from. With the right guidance, it can be easy for people to make something for themselves in the way that they want. That’s where us makers come in!

Hear, hear Kirsten! Happy [home]making! :)

If you’ve ever searched the internet for lettering inspo, you’ve probably seen Lauren Hom’s work. Her California-based design studio, Hom Sweet Hom, has done work for clients such as Starbucks and Google, and has a new exclusive collection with Studio Ink. She is also well known for her beautifully lettered “Daily Dishonesty” sayings and making money off her ex-boyfriend’s tears. Still not convinced of how cool Lauren is? Get this: Her life motto is “Work hard, snack often.” If those aren’t true pearls of wisdom, I don’t know what are.

Lauren recently teamed up with Studio INK to create a line of beautiful, colorful, quirky greeting cards. In true Lauren Hom fashion, her cards are super relatable and speak the truth (i.e. “Birthday Calories Don’t Count”).

And now, for our chat with Lauren.

Where are you based?

Traveling around the world for a year right now. Previous home base was Brooklyn, New York.

What inspires you? Why do you love to design, create and make?

I’m inspired by life — from inside jokes with friends to exploring new cities and cultures, my work is mostly inspired by my experiences. Aesthetically, I’m inspired by the colors, patterns, textures and signage of all the places I travel to.

I’ve always loved to make things with my hands. Whether it’s baking a cake or painting a mural, I really enjoy making something out of nothing. Sometimes I’ll step back from something I’ve drawn or painted and think, “Whoa, did that really just come out of my hands?” It’s a great feeling, and I think this feeling is what keeps me moving forward.

What’s one piece of advice you’d share with other makers?

Never stop making!

Tell us how technology has changed and supported what you do.

I love the speed, precision and efficiency that technology gives me. All of my work starts out on paper with pencil and ink, and then with the help of a scanner, Photoshop and a tablet, I can edit, color, rotate and paint my letters any way I want to. 50 years ago, I would’ve had to do all of it by hand. It’s really incredible.

How do you get into the creative flow? How does it feel?

A good workflow is my happy place. Everything falls into place and I go into a sort of happy trance. I find that I get into the creative flow by writing down ideas as soon as they come to me. There’s something magical about the birth of an idea — the thought that I could’ve just come up with something that has never crossed anyone else’s mind is so exhilarating. Writing things down (on paper, in my phone notepad, etc.) as soon as they come to mind is definitely a catalyst to my creative flow.

Oh, and having a few really good go-to playlists is key when I’m in a drawing groove. Having to stop and change songs is super disruptive.

What is the story of how you got to where you are today?

When I was 18, I moved to New York City to attend the advertising program at School of Visual Arts. After graduation, I landed my dream job at a big advertising agency but burnt out within a year. Luckily, I had been working on illustration passion projects on the side, so I had enough confidence to leave my full-time job and begin freelancing. Leaving the comfort of my nine-to-five job was scary, but when I put myself in a sink or swim situation, I worked harder because there was more to lose.

What other makers inspire you?

These amazing ladies making unique things:

What is the weirdest, most unusual or worst job you’ve ever had?

In college, I designed characters for a Facebook game that was like Farmville for stoners.

What other things do you love to make?

I hand-sewed this sexy cheeseburger + fries Halloween costume that I am super proud of: I’ve worn it seven years in a row.

Glen Powell is the gift that keeps on giving, TBH. From his viral Anyone But Youpress tour to his iconic Twisterscowboy-in-the-rain scene, it's Glen Powell's world and we're all just living in it. Thankfully, the Glen-iverse is expanding with a new movie, and it's set to be spicier than ever. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Homewrecker, the upcoming erotic thriller, just officially landed at a production company, finally making Glen's new movie a reality. Wanna know more? Let's get into it!

Here's everything to know about Glen Powell's upcoming erotic thriller, Homewrecker!

Not too much is known about Homewrecker — other than that it's an erotic thriller. The film is based off of an unpublished story by Neil M. Paik (Reawakening, Rainbowfish) that's only three chapters long.
The Hollywood Reporterbroke the news that Legendary won the bidding war for Homewrecker this week. According to the outlet, there was "a seven-figure outright purchase" for the film rights and "a seven-figure arrangement" to have Paik write the screenplay.
With that deal in place, Glen Powell is set to star and produce this project, with Paik writing the script. So far, everything else is very under wraps, but here's what I do know:
  • Glen Powell is one of the most charming men in Hollywood, so I know he's gonna bring that charm to new heights in this film — even if they're slightly sinister heights!
  • Glen Powell in the rain in Twisters (yes, it's the second time I'm brining this up — it's fine) was so hot, and he wasn't even doing anything actually hot...just imagine the erotic thriller possibilities here!
  • IMAGINE YET ANOTHER GLEN POWELL PRESS TOUR?
Basically, all this goes to say, the girlies stay winning when it comes to Glen Powell. 🙌 Can't wait for more updates on this very exciting project!

As our Re:Make conference-goers can attest, there’s really nothing like being in the company of fellow makers. Small-scale artisans make our world go round, and we’ll take every chance we can get to celebrate them! That’s why we teamed up with Blurb to put on our first-ever Maker B-School, a night filled with inspiring makers, tasty (and photogenic!) cocktails and a healthy helping of maker wisdom from some of the best in the industry.

Consider this your virtual tour :) First stop: Blurb’s station!

BLURB

We have MAJOR respect for this company. Using their tools, any maker (or regular Jane!) can publish a print book, magazine or ebook, and therefore make their brand that much stronger. Blurb has done wonders for the maker community, and we’re incredibly honored to partner with them.

CHRISTINE HERRIN + ADOBE

We’re all about hands-on project stations, and Adobe definitely delivered. They paired up with Christine Herrin, who makes seriously beautiful zines using Adobe InDesign, and provided inspirational booklets for all of the attendees.

Excuse us while we crush HARD on Christine’s designs — we can’t get enough of them.

LAMBERT FLORAL STUDIO

Next up is Sammy Go of Lambert Floral Studio (yay for maker dudes!) with a jaw-dropping, bountiful bouquet, some impressive knowledge of how to grow a business’s social community and possibly one of the most tasteful product catalogs we’ve ever seen. Can you bring your flowers to all of our events, please?

See what we mean by an impressive catalog? This thing is downright dreamy.

CRAFT + COCKTAILS

Ashley Rose Conway of Craft + Cocktails whipped up tasty piña coladas and spiked pink peppercorn lemonades all night, and also dished out some expert tips on cocktail photo styling. We’ve already been following her on Instagram for ages, so it was a real treat to get a behind-the-scenes look!

These babies were definitely Insta candy :)

ETTA + BILLIE

Alana Rivera, from the artisanal soap brand Etta + Billie, talked shop and shared best tips for building an authentic brand. We can’t decide what we like more: the marvelous fragrances or the tasteful, elegant packaging.

JOSHU + VELA

The team at JOSHU+VELA construct bags, wallets and accessories made entirely of natural materials, and they’re manufactured right here in SF — by them! It was a pleasure to have them showcase their brilliant products and share their perspective on brand identity. We’re itching to take a leather-working class with them, if they’ll have us ;)

PORTRAITS TO THE PEOPLE

How cool is this — Sarah Deragon of Portraits to the People used our DIY studio to provide headshots for the attendees!

After getting zhuzhed by a professional makeup and hair stylist, makers would get a chance to take a new headshot by Sarah, one of the top photographers in the Bay Area. Neat, huh?

THE FOOD!

Oh, did we mention the incredible food provided by SF favorite, Vive la Tarte? Tied for most delectable treat was this INSANE bacon-wrapped fig and an unbelievably satisfying creme brûlée tart — but we’re not playing favorites.

MAKER B-SCHOOL TOP TIPS

Didn’t make it to the stellar event this time? No worries! Lucky for you, our amazing designer Rosee Canfield compiled the makers’ top tips in a beautiful, printable card. Check it out!

Taylor Swift's birthday (which any Swiftie will tell you is December 13, 1989) is always a reason to celebrate. But this year, considering her birthday came five days after wrapping the Eras Tour on December 8, Taylor's BF Travis Kelce took things to the next level by giving the popstar an Eras Tour-themed party! And according to Jo-Jo Edwards-Hilaire, it was a total surprise. Not only did the guest list include some of your favorite celebs, but they all dressed up asTaylor, wearing outfits inspired by each Era in the concert. There's only one thing to say: Long live all the memories we made!

Check out all the pictures from Taylor Swift's surprise 35th birthday party, thrown by Travis Kelce.

Patrick & Brittany Mahomes celebrated Taylor Swift (and the Eras Tour) with themed outfits.

www.instagram.com

Patrick and Brittany Mahomes showed up to Taylor's birthday wearing two of the best outfits of the night (which you can see on Brittany's Instagram): Britt was dressed as Fearless-era Taylor with a silver dress, jacket, and long curls, while Patrick was dressed in a suit just like Travis wore when he showed up onstage during "I Can Do It With A Broken Heart" in June 2024!

"My people🫶🏼," Brittany captioned the post, adding the heart hands Taylor has become known for. In addition to Britt's on-theme outfit, Taylor wore a black dress with red lipstick, Lyndsay Bell donned a Lover-approved pink sparkly outfit, and Ashley Avignone added some Reputation into the mix by wearing a plush snake around her neck, Voldemort style.

Ross Travis also posted photos from the event (including his incredible pink suit embroidered with ballerinas, heart sunglasses, and feather boa), showing off an epic dance floor. I want to belt "You Belong With Me" with Taylor and Travis!

But an epic party wasn't the only way Taylor Swift spent her 35th birthday.

And Taylor Swift's surprise birthday party wasn't the only event on her calendar last week. On December 12, the singer spent time with patients at the Children's Mercy Kansas City Hospital, petting dogs, making TikToks, and signing Eras Tour books. It was such a sweet and memorable way to kick off her birthday!

One of my favorite things about this visit is that not only is Taylor writing each kid a personalized message on their Eras Tour book, but she gets down to their eye level and stops writing to look at them when they're talking. Just like her lyrics make us feel seen when we hear them, Taylor goes out of her way to make every single kid feel known and important, and it just makes us love her even more.

When one child said, "I like Travis now," Taylor immediately replies with, "Yes, me too. That's an absolute yes on that one." We'd have to agree, Taylor ;).
