10 Cheap Ways to Update an Ugly Kitchen

We're all cooking in the kitchen more these days and wouldn't it be nice to have a kitchen you love just as much as the food you cook in it? Not many of us are in a position to pay $80K or more for a high-end remodel but there are small and DIY ways to freshen up your kitchen and feel good about it. Whether you're a renter or homeowner, here are tips to modernize a less-than-beautiful kitchen with a simple remodel from floor to ceiling.

Kondo your kitchen. Maybe your kitchen isn't as ugly as you think; it could just be dirty and overly cluttered. Throw out anything you don't need or use anymore. Pressure-wash the walls and the floor and make sure the ceiling, countertops, and everything that you didn't throw out is as clean as possible. Group similar items together and organize the kitchen, even the pantry if you have one. Now take a look with fresh eyes. What needs updating now?

Disguise the ugly floor. If the floor still makes you frown, disguise it using area rugs around the sink and refrigerator. Another option would be to install linoleum tiles. There are modern versions popping up that make stone tile an unnecessary expense. Linoleum is made from renewable, all-natural materials like linseed oil, cork dust, and wood flour so it's easy to clean *and* you win planet-friendly points.

Give kitchen cabinets a facelift. You really don't need to replace your kitchen cabinets if your current set is solid wood and still in good shape. Start by replacing the outdated hinges and the knobs with more modern ones. Go a step further if you like by re-staining them to remove scratches, ugly color patterns, and oily stains, or go for a whole new paint job. Your choice of paint will depend on your budget and preferences. Need color help? Look here but bright white looks fresh and modern too.

Update lighting. Upgrade your lights with pendants and flush mounts to make the kitchen bright, warm, and welcoming. Replace the light switch panels with modern, top-of-the-line switches too. Alright, maybe not top of the line but the best for your budget.;)

Add wall art. Add a spark of personality, color, and dimension to the kitchen by adding wall art. It could be your favorite painting, framed pieces on a shelf, or a canvas print of foods and recipes. (Print shown Zuma Beach Malibu No. 7 by Kamala Nahas via Minted)

Add greenery. Create a hanging garden and plant rosemary, sage, mint, basil, and oregano, among other herbs. Herbs such as rosemary bring beautiful scents to your kitchen and are great for culinary seasoning. Remember to optimize sunlight by creating a garden near a south-facing window or if your budget allows, invest in a quality LED grow light to mimic the sun indoors. If you are not an herb person, you can transform your kitchen into a plant-filled paradise by bringing in a few potted green plants.

Paint the walls.Paint them yourself (don't forget the primer!) or hire a professional. Go for an accent wall, a pattern, or even a mural. Some of the colors you might consider for the kitchen include yellow and blue. Shades of yellow will make your kitchen feel warm, bright, and sunny. Most shades of blue are soothing and can calm an anxious mind.

Add a backsplash. Install a peel-and-stick removable tile (like this Mint Shell print) if you are a renter or just don't want to commit long-term. Removable wallpaper like the Lemon Branch print below also makes an amazing visual impact.

Dress up your appliances. A matching suite of new appliances would be a welcome makeover and make cooking/baking/cleaning way more enjoyable but they are extremely pricey. Instead, you can cover up what you already have. For example, you can cover an ugly fridge using contact paper or your oven with a stainless steel finish.

Add a centerpiece. Elevate your usual table setting with fresh-cut flowers or succulents or a bowl of fruit—anything that revamps the dinner for a more welcoming vibe on a budget.

Now that Halloween is officially over, it’s time to lean into all things holiday cheer. My favorite way to get into the Christmas spirit is decorating my space to match all the cookie decorating parties, gift wrapping sessions, and holiday cocktail hours to come this winter. But I’m one to do this on a budget – I often hit the thrift store for Christmas decor. When I’m not there, I’m scouring Amazon for pieces that are cute, but still take it easy on my wallet.

These are the best Amazon Christmas decorations I found that don’t cost an arm and a leg, but rival styles you’d find at more upscale stores like Anthropologie and Nordstrom:

Amazon

Peiduo Small LED Light Birch Trees

These tiny trees lit by twinkly LED lights are perfect for topping your mantle or dinner table. I think they add just the right amount of whimsy to your space, no matter how you decorate with them! They're not necessarily Christmas-specific, either. Their simple design allows you to spruce 'em up in all kinds of ways year-round. Similar pieces at Target and Anthropologie range from $21 $68 for one tree, but you can get two trees for just $25 on Amazon right now.

Amazon

Plaid Throw Pillow Covers

Plaid – specifically red plaid – is timeless when it comes to Christmas decor. It never fails to make a space extra cozy! These 18x18-inch covers are perfect for throw pillows on your bed and couch alike. You can snag this set of 2 in a few other holiday-ready colorways for just $10, and they'll likely last you a while with the right care.

    Amazon

    Artgar Real Touch Pine Garland

If you have a mantle, use it! A mantle is prime real estate for Christmas decorations like stockings, candles, and cards – but none of that is truly complete without a good garland! This 6-foot faux pine garland can easily span your mantle to fill in any negative space and simply make things cozier. It comes with attached LED lights (no wall plug necessary, just a few batteries) as well as pinecone accents to make the garland itself feel fuller. Plus, $30 isn't so bad for a statement piece like this!

    Amazon

    Vintage Bow Decorative Tray

This piece reminds me of a tray Pottery Barn Teen and LoveShackFancy sells in their collaborative collection, except it literally costs $60 less. It's not a total dupe, but the one thing it does have in common is bows: the most adorable reference to gifting season! I think this $9 pick could be so cute as a serving platter for Christmas desserts or even as a festive catchall you keep on your coffee table throughout the holidays.

    Amazon

Kate Aspen Retro Floral Drinking Glasses

The intricate design on these green-tinted glasses really has me hooked. They'd look so good with any sort of Christmas party tablescape – as long as you're sipping Christmas cocktails out of them! A similar set of 6 is currently being sold on Quince for $48. This one's only $26.

Chad Michael Murray has many names: Lucas Scott, Cal Jones, Jake — and Dad! The actor (whose new movie The Merry Gentlemen is on Netflix now) just revealed that he always brings his kids to work while filming, and my daddy's girl heart is simply melting.

If you're an One Tree Hill fan, there's a good chance you're a die-hard Lucas and Peyton shipper, but IRL Chad currently has three children with wife, Sarah Roemer: a son who's nine, a daughter who's six, and another daughter who just turned one.

Here's why Chad Michael Murray always brings his family to set with him.

    • Chad Michael Murray has three kids: a 9-year-old son, a 6-year-old daughter, and a 1-year-old daughter.
    • The actor revealed why his family, whom he calls "The Pack," joins him on every film set.
    • He also spills on why he's "really proud" of new Christmas movie The Merry Gentlemen, on Netflix now!

The reason Chad Michael Murray always brings his fam to set is actually really simple. “I want to be there," he tells Variety of why his family is inseparable. "I got to be there for my daughter’s first steps. I got to take her trick or treating for the first time. And she crushed it!"

The actor really views his family as a unit, and proudly calls them "The Pack," which sounds exactly like something Austin Ames from A Cinderella Story would call his family. But don't worry — even though the family was with him on the set of The Merry Gentlemen, which follows a group of guys who stage a steamy revue to rescue a local venue, the kids don't have any innocence lost.

“It’s not gratuitous by any means," he continues. "We threaded the needle on that film. You go too far and you’re making one movie, you go too under, and it doesn’t work at all. It’s in the perfect space where people won’t feel wrong having it on the TV in the background. It’s the sweet spot, and I’m really proud of that."

Chad and his wife recently celebrated their 10th anniversary on September 19, and he posted the sweetest tribute in honor of the special day. "We’ve jammed more into this 10 years than I ever could’ve imagined. It’s truly astounding," he says on Instagram. "It’s been the Best decade of my life by far- sharing each and every moment with you. We’ve grown this little pack together and seen so much of the world as a family. I’m so grateful for you Sarah. Every day is a better and much brighter day with you in it:)"

"I hope and pray for at least 50 more anniversaries with you," he continues. "Till we’re old and gray… new hips, new knees, our elbow skin will be touching the ground, all the kids will think we’re senile but really we’re just f-ing with them… coz that’s what you do when you’re old and together:) I love you Sarah- Happy 10th Anniversary❤️❤️❤️"

In addition to his new holiday flick, the One Tree Hill actor recently made headlines for commenting on his potential return to the One Tree Hill sequel series that's (hopefully) coming to Netflix soon. We know Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton, and Danneel Ackles are involved, but will we see Lucas join Brooke, Peyton, and Rachel? "No clue," he says, although he hopes it “comes together for the fans.”

“I mean, this fandom that has grown, I mean, literally, I was just in Halifax a week ago and, sure enough, I’m running into 11, 12, 13-year-old kids who are in love with Tree Hill,” he continues. “They’re seeing it on Hulu and they’re going, ‘Oh, my gosh.’ It’s stood the test of time and I think to have some new stories, whatever iteration of the show that’s created, I want it for the fans.”

C'mon everybody let's sing together — I DON'T WANNA BE ANYTHING OTHER THAN WHAT I'VE BEEN TRYNA BE LATELY!

Miley Cyrus and boyfriend Maxx Morando are extremely elusive, TBH. We've gotten snippets of their relationship status here and there, from them moving in together to their adorable appearance at the Grammys, but not much more than that. Thankfully, Miley opened up to Harper's Bazaarabout her budding relationship, making rare comments about her curly-haired beau.

Here's what Miley Cyrus had to say about Maxx Morando!

    Francis Specker/CBS

Like most millennials, Miley needs help staying up-to-date on all things Gen Z, including (and maybe especially) when it comes to memes. Luckily, apparently Maxx keeps her in the loop by sending her what he sees online — a time when their eight-year age gap really seems to come in handy. She told Harper's Bazaar, “He looks at life really differently than I do. He grew up with a laptop. I had a desktop computer that I shared with my brothers and sisters."

The Grammy-winner went on to explain that Maxx even uses his Gen Z-ness when it comes to their dog (OMG they have a dog together?!). She said, "Honestly, he’s raised our dog off Reddit. I’m like, Are you sure we’re supposed to be doing this? And he’s like, On Reddit it says blah, blah, blah."

She went on to explain that Maxx is "very similar" to her. She said, "We just don’t take life too seriously." This all plays into their ability for the two musicians to collaborate on creating, meshing their personal and professional lives pretty seamlessly. According to the article, Maxx helped write the song "Something Beautiful" on her upcoming album, which is apparently the title track...I'm not crying, you are!

While so many couldn't intertwine their careers with matters so personal, Miley clearly feels differently. She said, “I worked with my dad forever. That’s how me and my ex-husband met each other. I’ve always worked with the people that I love. And Maxx just inspires me so much.”

BRB while I anxiously await this new album...and any other updates on these two love birds!
