9 Ways To Maximize Your Time This Labor Day Weekend

labor day weekend ideas

Labor Day, which has been going strong for more than 125 years, is meant to celebrate the social and economic achievements of American workers. In our modern reality, that essentially translates to white-collar employees getting the first Monday of September off, thus allowing us a three-day weekend to unofficially (and begrudgingly) wave goodbye to summer.

Whether you're ready to welcome fall with open arms, or you wish that summer could last forever, there's one thing you can know for sure: since it's the last official long weekend until late October, we're pulling out all of the stops. Here are some ideas to help you do the same.

Make It A Staycation (Or A Nearcation)

Perhaps you leaned hard into travel when it became safer to do so, or maybe you've found your calendar packed with rescheduled, not-so-local weddings. Either way, there's no shame in spending this break at home, where you can devote both your time and money to hanging out with your family and taking on some fun (and often delicious) projects. Start with these three ideas.

If you want to get out of the house, but don't want to take a crazy long trip, take a "nearcation" using a site like Hotels By Day, which gives you tons of flexibility if you want to get access to nearby hotel pools, or book a hotel room or dayroom for a shorter period of time.

Read A Great Book

Whoever said you had to be at the beach to enjoy a beach read? Personally, we're convinced there are few things better than splaying out on the couch with a good book and getting lost for a couple of uninterrupted hours. From Michelle Zauner's Crying at H-Mart and Iman Hariri-Kia's A Hundred Other Girls to mysteries like Stacey Abrams' (yes, that Stacey Abrams) While Justice Sleeps, these are a few of our recent favorites.

Try A New Cocktail

We love rosé and gin and tonics as much as the next person, but we also recognize the fun of switching it up once and while. Before we dive into Pumpkin Spice Lattes and hot toddies, enjoy one last weekend of summer bliss. No matter your spirit of choice, one of these 34 easy summer cocktail recipes is bound to hit the spot.

Take A Hike

It's relatively easy to socially distance while hitting up one of these trails throughout the U.S., all of which you can hike in a single day. You'll be rewarded with breathtaking views, quality time in the great outdoors, and a chance to really move your body after all those hours spent at your desk.

Commit To A Home-Improvement Project

At the beginning of the pandemic, we were eager to spiff up the spaces in which we were suddenly spending all of our time. Since then, however, we've had a little bit of burnoutin multiples areas of our lives and haven't done a home DIY in a while. Use this pre-fall, three-day break to create a gallery wall, give your plants a new home, or make your staircase a conversation piece.

Play Around Outdoors

We might as well take advantage of the good weather (fingers crossed) while it's still here because once temps drop, we'll be cozied up with our favorite fall movies on the couch until next summer. Whether you're attending a friend's barbecue or hosting a group at your place, we highly recommend whipping out a donut Twister mat or giant Jenga.

Also, Eat Outdoors

If you're up to play hostess, you have not one, not two, but three nights where your guests don't need to wake up early and trudge to the office. Stock up on goodies like tiki torches, marshmallow roasting sticks, and a patio cooler we're straight-up obsessed with to ensure a good time for all.

Take A Road Trip

Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash

Summer road trips are iconic for good reason, and this weekend might be your last chance to experience one in 2021. Make sure you have your road trip outfit formulas (from a trip to Disney World to a girls' trip to the city) and consider stopping by one of these 50 wacky roadside attractions before you reach your destination.

Set Yourself Up For A Productive Short Week

Photo by Ella Olsson on Unsplash

You have every right to push this one aside until Monday afternoon, but it's worth getting organized, meal planning, and setting goals before you log back in to work on Tuesday. While long weekends are blissful, the truncated workweeks that follow often feel overwhelming. A couple hours of preparation can be a massive help.

It's time for the weekend watch! When it comes to a long weekend, a few activities are always a good idea: delicious homemade food (hello mac & cheese!), grabbing a latte from your favorite coffee shop (or whipping up a delicious DIY Starbucks recipe yourself), and catching up on all the TV shows you've fallen behind on before heading back to work.

That's why Labor Day weekend 2024, which is observed through September 2, is the perfect time to kick back and relax. Whether you want to escape into your favorite comfort movie or you missed your favorite series' return, we found all the best titles to keep you busy this weekend — without the stress, of course. Without further ado, here are 3 comfort watches, 2 new TV shows, and 1 series you can catch up on this weekend.

Comfort Watches

Warner Bros. Television

Gilmore Girls — Stream on Netflix

This comfort show is the ultimate escape, and if you're more than ready to pack up your swimsuits and shower your home in Target fall decor, this show will totally get you in the mood for all the fun things coming post-Labor Day weekend. But aside from all of the autumn of it all, everything about Gilmore Girls makes it the perfect comfort watch. The heart of the show is family and community, and honestly even coming-of-age in a safe space. There's nothing that will put you more at ease!

The CW/Warner Bros Television

The Vampire Diaries — Stream on Peacock

I consider The Vampire Diaries the perfect September TV show because it gives me the same feeling the first crisp early-fall morning provides, or the same thrill as lighting an apple candle and listening to the acoustic version of Taylor Swift's "State of Grace" (both of which I do every September 1). And with a slew of leather jackets, long sleeve Henley tees, and jeans, the show has just enough layering to make you crave some fall basics.

Neal Preston/Paramount Pictures

Elizabethtown — Stream on PlutoTV

If you haven't seen this film before, get ready because it's about to become one of your all-time comfort movies (or at least, that's what happened when I watched it for the first time). It offers a lot of the same joy Gilmore Girls does because, partly because it centers family relationships and small town living, but because the story features plane rides, road trips, and crashing a wedding, it caters to that last little bit of summer adventure we all have when Labor Day weekend rolls around.

New Series

Eric McCandless/Disney

Only Murders in the Building — Stream on Hulu

Only Murders in the Building season 4 might only have one episode so far, but in the event you haven't been able to watch it, there is no time like the present. This episode finally brings us back to Mabel, Charles, and Oliver, but since it is only one episode, it'll leave you wanting more before the credits even roll. Plus, if you save it for Labor Day itself, you can watch episode two when it premieres the next day!

Netflix

Emily in Paris — Stream on Netflix

We might have to wait until September 12 for Emily in Paris season 4 part 2, but all five episodes of part 1 are available on Netflix now. And in my opinion, this is the best season since the first! By this point, we are well acquainted with Emily, Gabriel, and all the other memorable characters, and the writing is so good that you could binge all five episodes in one night. You can also watch one episode a day to stretch it out ;).

New TV Shows To Catch Up On

Nick Strasburg/HBO

Industry — Stream on Max

Labor Day weekend presents the perfect opportunity to watch any shows you're behind on, and our team can't stop talking about Industry season 3. I never knew banking could be so dramatic, but Industry is simply the only series that fills the void left behind by Succession and Euphoria. Episode 4 premieres on September 1, which means we're already halfway through the season. And I'm cancelling all my plans to curl up and catch up.

It fizzled fast after their press tour wrapped.”

A Page Six source reaffirms that the relationship ended on good terms, and even says the couple has “been in touch” and has “no bad blood” between them. “There was no dramatic falling out between Channing and Zoë. They really just grew apart and decided it was best for them to go their separate ways,” they say. They "both handled the breakup very maturely [but] came to a mutual realization that they were better off friends than romantic partners.”

Despite the breakup, another Page Six source says that Zoë Kravitz had a blast at a Halloween party. “She was in a good mood and seemed really happy,” they say, remembering that she was “dancing all night and having cocktails...having a great time” and “was so cute and nice.”

Labor Day is such a fun holiday (who doesn't love a three day weekend?!), but it also signifies the end of summer. That means our time with our fun, bright, floral summer dresses is sadly coming to an end. But, you want to make sure you're dressed the part for those Labor Day get togethers that are sure to take place either at the beach, the pool, or simply a friend's backyard. So, I combed through some of my favorite dresses from Amazon that are sure to get to you right in time for Labor Day, and will still have you looking cute while you beat your partner in corn hole. You're not ready for these cute, end-of-summer picks!

Amazon

ZESICA A Line Midi Dress

I had to start off strong with my favorite dress on this list. A-Line dresses are my favorite for dinner parties, because they're snug at the waist, but flare out at the hips so if you struggle with bloating (I know I do), then you don't have to worry about this dress showing a thing. It will be comfortable, chic, and fun! Love this one!

Amazon

ZESICA Blue Gingam Midi Dress

Because Labor Day usually signals the change in seasons from summer to fall, this might be one of your last chances to wear those summer outfits! So, I know I will be certainly wearing allll the summer aesthetics I can, before the fall season begins to start and it's out with the light, breezy blues and in with the orange!

Amazon

PRETTYGARDEN Flowy V-Neck Maxi Dress

This dress could not be more Sofia Richie old-money vibes if it tried. It's the ultimate casual, yet chic look that I will be going for this entire end-of-summer-early-fall season! It's effortless without trying too hard, but still looks extremely elevated and minimalist. I love this find, and think it would be great for a more elevated Labor Day get together!

Amazon

chouyatou Maxi Puff Sleeve Gingham Dress

Gingham is a year-round trend, you can not convince me otherwise. So what better time to wear it then that weird transition from summer to fall? It's hard to know exactly what to wear for Labor Day, but this dress has got you covered with its summery and fall vibe wrapped into one! I also love the oversized fit, because it gives you space to beat your significant other in corn hole (I'm looking at my husband here). You'll need this one to play all those popular Labor Day games while still looking cute while you do it.

Amazon

Wenrine Midi Spaghetti Strap Smocked Dress

This smocked summer dress is so cottagecore inspired with its ties and ruching! One thing I love about it is that it could seamlessly transition into the fall as well with its simple color palette and mid style. It's the perfect transitional item! And for only $35 on sale, it's definitely a steal.

Amazon

Shy Velvet Linen Spagetti Strap Maxi Dress

You can truly never go wrong with a simple tank maxi dress. I have countless versions of them in my closet, because they are a serious go to for me when I don't know what to wear. I throw it on with a plain pair of black flip flops, and boom! Instant chic outfit combo. I might be grabbing this dress in multiple colors to stock up for fall...

Amazon

ZESICA One Shoulder Smocked Midi Dress

I love a simple beige dress, because it can be worn for so many different occasions — even beyond Labor Day. You can even show a little skin with this sexy off the shoulder midi dress! This would look so good with a denim jacket thrown over the shoulders at night time when it gets a little bit more chilly!

Amazon

VIUTIL Mini Blue Backless Dress

Can you say "Free People dupe"?! This seriously looks so similar to something straight out of a Free People ad. I love this style of mini dress for fun, casual plans this Labor Day. It's especially great for those of us that are living in hotter climates this Labor Day (like me in LA). I will be immediately adding this cute dress to my cart. Bonus points for it coming in so many different color ways as well!

Amazon

PRETTYGARDEN Knit Two Piece Maxi Set

A knit two pice isn't necessarily a dress, but it is a fun way to wear something a bit more casual. You can wear the knit set as is, or opt for a white t-shirt to pair with the skirt, as I often do when buying sets. My favorite part about sets are the versatility! Throw on some sandals, and you're good to go!

Amazon

Fiseow Mini Crochet Sundress

This ruffle-y mini dress is the perfect outfit for any Labor Day BBQs you might be attending. And it might be one of the last times you can wear a fun, mini dress before that fall season chill hits! I know I will be taking every advantage of this holiday to wear some fun summer clothes before I put them away for next year!

Party on! Game nights are the best nights, at least in our opinions. Seriously, what's more fun than sitting around the table playing a game, drinking a cocktail or two and laughing with friends?! We'd totally take that over a night sweating (and very awkwardly dancing) at the club.

We know you've made it through that Cards Against Humanity deck too many times to count, so refresh your adult game night stash with some of the best new party games around.

Game of Phones

Uncommon Goods

This techy card game prompts you and your friends to compete in smartphone-based tasks. With assignments ranging from “Find your best #selfie” to “Create an emoji masterpiece,” you’re guaranteed belly laughs and conversation starters galore. Just like with Cards Against Humanity, each round has a judge that picks the winner, so get your phone stacked with game changers now.

hella awk-ward Card Game

Shopify

If you want to spark real conversations with your guests, this is the game for you. By the end of this game, you’ll be surrounded by plenty of new pals. Play by drawing a card and answering the prompt to get to know friends and strangers alike on a deeper level.

What Do You Meme?

Amazon

This is the perfect game for anyone who has spent way too much time on the internet. Match funny captions with well-known internet memes (a rotating judge picks the best one) to create an afternoon or evening of hilarity.

Exploding Kittens Party Card Game

Amazon

This card game is like Russian Roulette “for people who are into kittens and explosions and laser beams and sometimes goats.” Count us in.

My Ex [A Deck of Conversation Starters]

Amazon

Gather your closest BFFs and spend the night with some good ol’ trash talking (therapeutically, of course). You’ll definitely find out who had the craziest ex. Gather friends that are down for the drama and start by pulling a card. Some of the topics you’ll fill-in-the-blank include: 1. The biggest red flag. 2. What is your ex up to now? 3. The worst rebound.

WHAT DO YOU MEME? for The Girls

Shopify

Grab your girlfriends and stir the pot with this hilarious card game. To play, whoever has the most Instagram followers goes first and rolls the die. “Whichever side of the die lands face-up, take the top card from the corresponding color deck. Read it aloud to the group & perform whatever action is on the card,” the instructions read. “Some cards involve just that player, some require the whole group. The player to their left then rolls the die & the game continues like this. Every winning card gets you a point. 1 Card = 1 Point. The player with the most cards at the end wins!”

Say Anything

Walmart

If you’re looking to reeeally get to know your friends, this is the game for you and your group (um, and maybe an invite to the new person you’ve been dating is in order). By reading questions and providing answers, you’ll quickly and creatively get inside the mind of all your party guests fast.

BAD CHOICES - The Have You Ever? Game + After Dark Edition Set

Amazon

You’ll really get to know the other party guests with this game. This might not be one to play with your new coworkers or mother-in-law!

To play, each player will draw six cards. “When it's your turn, choose one of your six question cards, then ask it to the player you think is most likely to answer YES. If they say YES, you get to discard your card. If they say NO you have to keep the card and try to use it again later,” the instructions read. With Skip Cards, Draw +1, Draw +2, and ALL PLAY cards, there's a surprising amount of strategy. The player who discards all of their cards first becomes the winner.

The Game of Things

Amazon

This provocative game will leave your jaw on the floor from the hilarious, creative and outrageous things your friends say. Simply by drawing topic cards like “Things a chimp thinks about when he sees you at the zoo,” responses are sure to be out of this world. After everyone writes down a response, and the best part starts — you all guess who said what. Let the finger pointing begin.

What’s Yours Like?

Walmart

Tell it like it is and you’ll excel at this one. Players have to guess words based off of creative word clues after asking the question, “What’s yours like?” Seriously, we wanna know.

If You Know You Know IYKYK - The Question Card Game

Amazon

Who knows each other best? This card game will (literally) put everyone’s cards on the table.

Getting started and playing this card game is super simple. A rotating judge asks the group a question about themselves from each of the three levels (indicated on the chosen card). Then, everyone chooses their answer. If you guess the judge's answer correctly, you get a point. The player with the most points wins.

That’s What She Said

Amazon

Are you basically Michael Scott from The Office? Any sucker for jokes and innuendos will love this saucy game.

Bananagrams

Shopify

This one is fun to do with the kids or you can spice it up with an adults-only game. Like speed scrabble, the game comes in a convenient banana-shaped pouch making it great to play on the go.

Never Have I Ever

Amazon

You and your friends can put your trust to the test by sharing your deepest, most embarrassing secrets in this revealing game.

Secret Confessions Game- Adult Version

Amazon

Get ready to laugh the night away with this far too funny game. Each group member will take turns reading the cards’ prompts. With each prompt, every player will answer “yes” or “no.”

The Voting Game

Amazon

In this game, instead of voting for the funniest answer, you vote for the player each card seems to describe. Talk about finding out who your real friends are.

Drawing Without Dignity

Amazon

It’s part Cards Against Humanity, part Pictionary. If you have friends who are particularly good artists (or even if they’re not), this game will bring you hours of fun.

Catan Strategy Board Game

Target

Like a medieval monopoly, full of knights, peasants, robbers and everything prehistoric. This game is focused around building settlements and protecting your land.

Relative Insanity

Walmart

Created by comedian Jeff Foxworthy, this game is based around familial interactions gone wrong with a Cards Against Humanity style of playing.

Influencers in the Wild

Amazon

If you follow the popular Instagram account, then you can probably guess the basics of this board game. Go places, gain followers and get famous to win this pop culture game.

We hope you've enjoyed this round-up of our favorite adult card games, and even if Cards Against Humanity is now somehow worth $500 Million your memories from these nights will always be priceless!

The holidays are here! Well, kind of. Thanksgiving isn’t until November 28 but as far as I’m concerned, November 1 is the day the festivities can begin. I’m pulling out my holiday candles, Christmas PJ’s, and even my How the Grinch Stole Christmas vinyl to make the dreary seasonal blues a little more cheerful. And a huge part of getting into the spirit is stacking up the perfect holiday movie marathon. Thankfully Netflix already has a bunch of holiday titles coming out over the next few weeks. Here are the best (new!!) holiday movies and specials coming to Netflix starting November 1.

Dinner Time Live With David Chang: Holiday Edition — On Netflix Now Until December 10

Adam Rose/Netflix

Nothing says the holidays like tons of delicious meals, and Chef David Chang is cooking some amazing food for his celebrity friends — and he's doing it all live. (Because, a lot of TV cooking uses swaps and stylists to make it look better than it actually is). I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!

Dinner Time Live With David Chang: Holiday Edition is hosted by David Chang.

Meet Me Next Christmas — On Netflix November 6

Sophie Giraud/Netflix

Christmas in New York City is truly a magical experience, and Layla's looking for her own fairytale romance this holiday season. And believe it or not, the ticket to finding her one true love is getting into the Pentatonix Christmas Eve Concert.

Meet Me Next Christmas streams November 6 and stars Christina Milian, Devale Ellis, Kofi Siriboe, Tymika Tafari, Mitch Grassi, Scott Hoying, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, Matt Sallee, Kalen Allen, Nikki Duval, and Wesley French.

Hot Frosty — On Netflix November 13

Petr Maur/Netflix

Nobody puts me in the holiday spirit like seeing Lacey Chabert onscreen, and this year, she's playing Kathy, a widow who happens to bring a handsome snowman to life. (I don't remember this in the "Frosty the Snowman" lyrics!). He helps Kathy reconnect with her emotions as they begin to fall for each other — and as he begins to melt.

Hot Frosty will stream on Netflix beginning November 13 and stars Lacey Chabert, Dustin Milligan, Craig Robinson, Joe Lo Truglio, Katy Mixon, Lauren Holly, and Chrishell Stause.

Netflix Stories: A Virgin River Christmas — On Netflix November 19

Petr Maur/Netflix

It's almost time for Virgin River season 6, which means we're getting closer to the ultimate cozy TV show. I mean, just look at those twinkly lights and pine trees in this preview image! It gives me the same exact feeling as drinking a mug of hot cocoa. This year, we're getting closer to Mel and Jack’s wedding, and confronting some serious secrets and drama along the way. This might not count as a Netflix holiday movie but I couldn't NOT include it!!!

Virgin River season 6 hits Netflix November 19 and stars Alexandra Breckenridge, Martin Henderson, John Allen Nelson, Tim Matheson, Annette O’Toole, Colin Lawrence, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Zibby Allen, Sarah Dugdale, Marco Grazzini, Mark Ghanimé, Kai Bradbury, Kandyse McClure, Jessica Rothe, and Callum Kerr.

The Merry Gentlemen — On Netflix November 20

Katrina Marcinowski/Netflix

Remember that One Tree Hill episode where the Ravens take part in the "Boy Toy" charity auction? Complete with a shirtless fashion show? Consider this the Netflix holiday movie response. When former dancer Ashley learns her parents' performing venue is in danger, she puts together the ultimate Christmas-themed show to raise money. Shirts not included.

The Merry Gentlemen hits Netflix November 20 and stars Britt Robertson, Chad Michael Murray, Marla Sokoloff, Beth Broderick, Michael Gross, Maxwell Caulfield, Hector David Jr., Colt Prattes, and Marc Anthony Samuel

Spellbound — On Netflix November 22

Skydance Animation/Netflix

Okay, this fantasy movie might not technically be a Christmas movie, but it has everything I need in my Netflix holiday movies: family, hope, and love. After her parents are turned into monsters, princess Ellian must go on the ultimate quest to put everything right.

Spellbound hits Netflix November 22 and stars Rachel Zegler, John Lithgow, Jenifer Lewis, Nathan Lane, Tituss Burgess, Javier Bardem, and Nicole Kidman.

Our Little Secret — On Netflix November 27

Bob Mahoney/Netflix
