We know you love the ‘90s (and early 2000s) as much as we do — our “boyfriends” from ‘90s teen movies, weird ‘90s Lipsmackers that you can still buy and this ‘90s office-wear trend all being current throwback obsessions — which is why we are well aware of how much you’re going to freak out over this amazing news. Get your besties ready for some epic viewing parties as MTV is rebranding the VH1 Classic channel as MTV Classic. In a move that might first appear to be a minor name change, you’ll be thrilled to find out that it also comes with some seriously awesome programming launches… or rather, re-launches. We’re talking nostalgic faves like Laguna Beach and The Real World. Oh, yeah!
Hitting the screens August 1, the launch coincides with the 35th anniversary of the original network, which launched August 1, 1981. The channel will even be airing an hour-long special to mark the glorious occasion. After the special, stay tuned for old faves like Total Request Live (though, it obvs won’t really be live anymore — they’re airing the pre-recorded episodes rather than starting the show up again), as well as The Real World and Laguna Beach.
The Real World (which eventually became just Real World) sparked 32 seasons — yep, 32! — of the show that was among the first reality shows to take the world by storm. Starting in New York and making its way all around the country, it gave us a peek into the wild lives of young people today, or now, back-in-the-day, who had been thrown together into a living situation that was bound to create mega drama.
Laguna Beach, on the other hand, only made it to three seasons, but the series certainly made the most of ‘em. The super-glam, super-luxe, super drama-prone teens of the OC area took us along for their adolescent adventures. Launching the careers of both Lauren Conrad and Kristin Cavallari (among others), it was a force to be reckoned with in reality TV history.
Now that these and others are coming back to TV, it’s time to get our ’90s dELiA*s style vibe going in full force for our watching parties.
