I Vacationed At Lake Como Like Taylor Swift For A Week On A Budget — Here’s How You Can Too

Lake Como on a budget

Taylor Swift's recent romantic getaway with Travis Kelce in Lake Como has all the girls ready to pack their bags and make their way to Italy! While the destination had plenty of draw before, I have a feeling it's going to get even more popular than it already is! And as someone who was there the same time she was, I can attest that it truly is one of the most stunning places on earth!

Lake Como, Italy is know for its stunning views of the lake and picturesque mountains. It is not only gorgeous, but also features incredible food, culture, people, and castles...no seriously, they're everywhere! While there's no shortage of beautiful sights, it can be seemingly hard to find affordable places to stay in Lake Como.

I did Lake Como for eight days and along the trip, I learned quite a few lessons for what I'd do differently and what I think I did right. But one things for certain; I made sure to get the most bang for my buck while there! So, get your beach bags and mini dresses packed and ready, because I've got all the insider info on how to do one of Italy's most expensive cities on a budget.

How To Get Cheap Flights To Lake Como

Lake Como is about an hour North of Milan, so it can be bit tricky to plan out how to get there. You're going to want to fly into Milan, BUT I wouldn't recommend flying directly into Milan from the states. In my experience, it was far too expensive to fly into either Milan airports from the US, and it was MUCH cheaper to fly into Paris (either CDG or ORY) and take an Easyjet into Milan.

For my first flight, I tookNorseairlines to the City of Light, and while you do have to pay for bags and food, it's MUCH cheaper than any other airline. I only paid $500 roundtrip for my ticket from LAX to CDG, so I would highly recommend it. Frenchbee is also a great airline that I've used and loved. It's a bit more cost-wise, but it also has meals included which is nice!

Next, you can either decided to linger in Paris for a couple days, or go directly onto an Easyjetflight into Milan — which literally costs around $50. It's incredibly cheap (especially if you book in advance), and the flight is only a little over an hour from Paris. I've flown Easy jet probably over 10 times in the last couple years, and it's super reliable and easy. It's faster than the trains, and sometimes it's honestly even cheaper, so that's why I use it anytime I've trying to get around Europe. The only thing to be aware of? Delays! Their flights often have delays, so just prepare for that in advance, and don't book flights too closely after them.

Booking Rental Cars To Lake Como

Now that you've made it into Milan, you need to work your way up to Como. You can do this via train or Uber (I prefer the EU company Bolt if you're doing this, because it's much cheaper) or rental car. I did a rental car because in Italy insurance is included in your rental car so it's *incredibly* cheap.

I rented a car (literally the most basic and cheap one available) for eight days, and it was a whopping $7 a day with insurance included...I'm not joking. So my rental car total for over a week with all the fees was $120. To me, it was worth it to be able to get all around the lake freely and not have to rely solely on ferries! I rented with Hertz, but I'd also recommend Sixt if you're looking for another option!

Don't rent from smaller, local places like Europecar or anything with bad reviews — nine times out of 10, they're totally tourist scams. Reputable places like Hertz or Sixt are reliable, with international ties and a proven track record, so they're definitely the better move. Also make sure to look on their sites for deals because they often do summer deals with discounts! When I check the Hertz website, I ended up using for 30% off my trip! Yay!

Budget Lodging In Lake Como

I almost always like to break up my international stays into two: one half in Airbnbs and the other half at nicer hotels. I do this because I save so much money on cheap flights so that I can spoil myself a bit with lodging. If you're looking to skip out on the hotel splurge, I'd still recommend splitting your trip into two, but doing it between different Airbnbs. A lot of places in and around Lake Como won't have all the cleaning fees we're used to in the states, so it's really affordable. For the first half of the trip, I would recommend staying more North of the Lake, so then you can cover more cities around the water. For the second half, you should stay more south, closer to Como City itself.

Once your lodging is settled and you've landed in Italy, you'll want to drive straight from Milan to your Airbnb. I would recommend staying in Lenno. This city is the prime location for anything and everything you could need. If you don't have a car, make sure you're walking distance to a ferry stop because that's how you're going to get around. TBH, even with a car, I still ended up taking the ferry most days to get across the lake. This is also the perfect location for any Star Wars fans because it's right next to the famous prequel villa: Villa Balbianello. This attraction is honestly a MUST, but make sure to buy your tickets in advance.

From the Lenno ferry stop, you can easily access all the major cities in the area. I recommend going to Bellagio, Menaggio, Varenna, and Tremezzo via ferry. Tremezzo, full of many fabulous tourist sites — including THE Grand Hotel Tremezzo (which is also a must) — is extremely expensive to stay in. Taylor Swift stayed near here, and I just happened to drive by her villa while she was on her own Italian holiday! Luckily, by staying in Lenno, I had plenty of proximity to the luxe destination without the pop star-level price tag!

Stay here (Lenno) for a couple days (by the lake, if you can) and just wander around to the local spots. Most of the restaurants here have incredibly affordable food and drinks. I found my daily coffee for two euros at most places, and lots of meals were under 10! It was one of my favorite cities I've ever stayed in! The above picture is an Airbnb I stayed at in Lenno for around $180/night, and it was right on the water!

After a couple days here, you're going to want to head more south! I stayed at a nice hotel in Cernobbio — an absolutely charming city — but you can stay in an Airbnb anywhere near here! I would recommend either Cernobbio, Laglio, Moltrasio, or even Como City if you're wanting more city-level action! I loved Cernobbio because it was a much quieter town which can be so nice after a lot of the busy tourism on the north side of the lake.

Lake Como Hotels On A Budget

I'm a big hotel-lover, so I'll always want to splurge and check out the hotels in the area! But if you don't want to the per-night price tag, then a hot tip I have is to check out the hotel bars for drinks! The hotels here are literally like castles, so I would definitely check them out. That way, if you're a hotel obsessor like me, then you can still get to experience the luxury of the lakeside hotels without the massive price point.

Some ones that I loved on the lake are:

These are all stunning with incredible views! Another hotel I visited that had great food and views (but was under $400 a night) was Hotel Villa Relais Vittoria, so I would definitely check that out if you want the five star experience without the five star price!

Affordable Food In Lake Como

My biggest tip when it comes to cheap, yummy food in Lake Como? Find quiet towns because that is where the more affordable food is! Places like Bellagio and Tremezzo are heavy on tourism, so the food will be much more expensive than other areas. However, quieter towns like Lenno or Cernobbio will have more affordable food without skimping on the flavor! Be sure to fill up at cafes there and head into the bigger towns for a lighter meal! The above picture is a truffle pasta I had in Cernobbio at a quaint little spot. It was only $14, but it was easily one of the best pastas I had on the entire trip!

Final Tips For Visiting Lake Como On A Budget:

Weather

Being on a lake is incredibly stunning, but one of the downsides is that weather can be very unpredictable! Rain is always an option so bring an umbrella because it could be sunny one moment and completely storming the next! Just be prepared because the weather app is normally never right!

The Ferry

The ferry is the cheapest and easiest way to get across the lake, but make sure to buy your tickets in advance as best as you can. Often times, the lines are very very long, and sometimes you can't even get them! So, just be mindful, and try to prepare ahead when you can.

Seasonality

The highest (and most expensive) times of year to visit Como are June-September, so if you can go anytime before or after that, I would definitely try. I went at the end of May, which was just as the summer season began. It was still pretty crowded, so I can't even imagine what it's like in the warmer months of June and July. Plus, the rates for stay and lodging almost double so if you want to do it more affordably, I would go either May or September/October!

Summer is here and you know what that means — vacation time! That said, going on vacation can be expensive between booking a hotel, going out to eat, planning activities, and navigating transportation. On the flipside, there are also ways to have a cheap vacation that can be just as fun and relaxing while still keeping a budget at the top of mind. Whether you're looking to unplug and immerse yourself in nature, visit a bustling city, or travel abroad, I've garnered a list of some of the best cheap vacations you can take this summer and beyond for all your solo travels or big families.

Visit Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva, WI

Venture to the midwest this summer to enjoy the breathtaking greenery and views Lake Geneva has to offer. For starters, book a room at The Abbey Resort which is home to swimming pools, marinas, and live music shows. Want to leave the hotel? Drive on over to Williams Bay Beach or Fontana Beach to relax by the ocean or book a zipline tour at Lake Geneva Ziplines and Adventures to get immersed in nature while spending some quality time together. Plus, we can’t forget to mention that Wisconsin is the dairy capital of the U.S., so make sure to get your hands on a block of cheese too.

Visit Corpus Christie

Corpus Christi, TX

Add Corpus Christi to your vacation plans if you’re looking for a peaceful place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life for a small weekend getaway. Book a hotel room for less than $150 per night at the Home2 Suites by Hilton Corpus Christi Southeast and then head to Whitecap or McGee beach to relax under the sun with a book in hand. For the more adventurous folks, go birding in ‘America’s Birdiest City’ at the Coastal Bend Audubon Society or Blucher Park to see vibrant, exotic birds you won’t see anywhere else. Oh, and Texas has a great food scene so don’t miss out on high quality Tex-Mex cuisine while you’re in town.

I Love NY

Catskills, NY

Head out of New York City to the Catskills to beat the crowds and high prices. In the great outdoors, you can take a ride on the Catskill Mountain Railroad or go fishing at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center — whatever your heart desires you can find it upstate. When it’s time to head back to the hotel, book a room at Wylder Windham and partake in a pickleball match, unwind in a wood-fired sauna, or explore with on property mountain bikes. Hungry for more? Head on over to La Perche or Baba Louie’s for a slice of pizza and a can of soda.

Visit Omaha

Omaha, NE

Engage in family fun this summer with a trip to Omaha that’ll keep everyone entertained without spending a fortune. Kick off your visit with a stop to Omaha's Henry Dooly Zoo & Aquarium where you can see giraffes, stingrays, monkeys, and more. For more educational activities, head on over to the Durham Museum or the Strategic Air Command and Aerospace Museum to learn about historical events and participate in interactive exhibits. When the hunger kicks in, devour some delicious bites at popular restaurants like Spaghetti Works and Boxer BBQ with options for the whole family.

Walt Disney Hometown Museum

Marceline, MO

Instead of an expensive trip to Disney World, take a visit to Walt Disney’s hometown of Marceline, Missouri. Immerse yourself in the magic by staying at Hotel Marceline which has Disney-themed rooms with decor straight from Orlando. To pass the time, stroll along Main Street which inspired Main Street U.S.A. at Magic Kingdom, and then make a pit stop at the Walt Disney Hometown Museum to learn about the history of Walt Disney and his upbringing. Plus, grab a bite to eat at Ma Vic’s Corner Cafe that has your classic burgers, fries, and sandwiches.

Ireland.com

Belfast, Ireland

Ditch the crowds in Dublin and head on over to Belfast where you can enjoy eye-catching greenery and rich history all in one place. Snag a room at Crowne Plaza to relax and unwind after a day of travel, and then head on over to the Titanic Belfast which is filled with galleries and interactive exhibits for those young and old. And when the hunger kicks in, head on over to St George’s Market where you’ll find live music and delicious seafood during its bustling weekend hours.

The Mill Resorts & Suites

Aruba

Take a trip to the ‘One Happy Island’ of Aruba to immerse yourself in crystal clear beaches and top-tier hospitality. Hop off the plane and head on over to The West Deck for traditional Aruban cuisine right along the water then check in to The Mill Resort & Suites that’s only six minutes away from Palm Beach. When night time rolls around, hail a taxi and take a visit to Gusto Night Club to dance the night away alongside locals and tourists and enjoy delicious drinks and three-dollar beers.

For most people Las Vegas is a one-stop shop for all things drinking and gambling. However, for those who don’t drink, it might seem like there’s not much to do — but that’s actually not the case at all! There are lots of shows, restaurants, and attractions to visit to make the most of your time in the entertainment capital of the world. I’ve gathered a list of what to do in Las Vegas if you don’t drink so you can still join in on the fun whether you’re in town for a bachelorette party, birthday trip, or family reunion.

Foodies, listen up! Las Vegas has tons of top-rated restaurants with highly-trained chefs from all over the world. If you’re craving fish or steak, then head on over to Ocean Prime Steakhouse for a delicious meal and top-tier service located next to the Crystal Shops. I tried the Sonoma Goat Cheese Ravioli and French Onion soup, and I’m still thinking about them both a week later. Another great restaurant is Top of the World at The STRAT Hotel which provides 360-degree views of Las Vegas with its rotating dining room located 800 feet in the air. While you dine, you’ll be captivated by the stunning views and even some bungee jumpers coming from two floors above. Be sure to ask your server about the butter cake for dessert because it’s one of the best sweet treats in LV.

The Bear Season 3 — Stream On Hulu

FX/Hulu

Not only did The Bear season 3 give our favorite chefs higher stakes in their careers and their personal lives, but it also gave us a deeper understanding of everyone's backstories, and how much they mean to one another. That insane season 3 ending packed a punch by diving into the affects of Carmy's relationship with Sydney in the past, and his relationship with Jimmy in the future. It's also perfectly teed up season 4, which we're hoping comes sooner rather than later.

You can stream The Bear season 3 on Hulu now. The show stars Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Abby Elliott, Matty Matheson, Ayo Edebiri, and Will Poulter.

I unfortunately have experienced the sheer tragedy that is hiking a long, challenging trail without the proper hiking shoes. It was blisters and aches galore! Trust me, I’m never doing that again. I also wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, ever.

Having supportive hiking shoes is absolutely crucial for not only tackling the tricky terrain out there, but simply ensuring you have an enjoyable time on the trail. After all, there’s so much Mother Nature has to offer, and it’s a shame to miss out on it in favor of tending to pain induced by an ill-fitting pair of shoes.

If you’re anything like me, you like to pull up to the trailhead in your coolest hiking outfit(when you look good, you feel good). Finding the right pair of hiking shoes to match your unparalleled style can be hard, though. Well, no longer! There are plenty of stylish hiking shoes out there that not only feel like heaven on your feet, but ensure you look like the coolest gal at the trailhead and beyond. Scroll on for 6 of my favorite hiking shoes that don’t sacrifice style nor comfort!

REI

Merrell x Parks Project Moab 3 Hiking Shoes

I need these on my feet expeditiously. I love that they boast a whole rainbow of colors, all while the sandy brown color does an excellent job at hiding dirt and dust. These Merrell hiking shoes made in collaboration with Parks Project are mostly fitted with recycled materials, too. The upper is made from plant-based materials and recycled canvas, as is the breathable mesh lining. There's an air cushion in the heels that absorbs any shock and adds stability, plus the signature Vibram soles ensure durability. These get you that technical look and feel while still having curb appeal, even off the trail!

The Merrell x Parks Project Moab 3 Hiking Shoes are $155.

Salomon

Salomon XT-6 Sportstyle Shoes

These shoes are for the outdoorsy street style lover. They're certifiably gorp-core, but still very supportive on any trail adventure. This pair has EVA cushioning that solidifies each and every step, geometrical lugs that hug any terrain and add stability, plus a super practical Quicklace system for easy on and off. Originally produced for ultra-distance races under harsh conditions, you'll find athletic-focused details in the sporty side stripes and signature Salomon logo with primary colors across the top. It's a good idea to go with this darker colorway for trail hikes, since it expertly disguises debris.

The Salomon XT-6 Sportstyle Shoes are available for $200.

Hoka

Hoka Speedgoat 5 Low

Hoka shoes are renowned for their comfort and practicality, especially when it comes to walking, running, and trail hiking. The Speedgoats are undeniably one of their most popular silhouettes, and I love that they're super streamlined – not bulky. These hiking shoes feature grippy Vibram soles, a double layer of jacquard mesh that ups breathability, and extra padding around the heel collar for support. Their weight clocks in at 8.5 oz, which is nice if you're already lugging around a big backpack full of gear.

The North Face

The North Face Oxeye Tech Shoes

The bootie-style ankle height on these hiking shoes from The North Face stabilizes the ankles and gets supported further by some sturdy plastic webbing, which is wildly helpful on long hikes. The outer layers are also made from ripstop material that keeps the shoe together, even if you come across small snags or tears. You'll fall in love with the thick, bouncy soles and easy drawstring laces! These shoes are fairly grippy on the bottom, but not as much as the other shoes' Vibram fittings. More than anything, I think this earth tone color palette is perfect for outdoor excursions of any kind, so they're very versatile.

This pair of The North Face Oxeye Tech Shoes are $90 (was $129).

Nike

Nike Zegama 2

Nike has mastered the art of hiking shoes with this style. The Zegama 2's are Nike's most-tested trail shoes to date with over 35,000 miles logged globally! They're fitted with an ultra-responsive ZoomX foam midsole and stretchy ankle gaiter that hugs the heel to deliver ideal levels of comfort. Ultimately, they were designed to conquer steep ridges, jagged rocks and hilly races, so you can also make them work beyond the trailhead. Though there's only a single layer of mesh on the upper, it's impressively durable and ultra-breathable. I also adore the eye-catching lime green details and bold classic Nike swoosh along the sides.

This pair of Nike Zegama 2's goes for $180.

Saucony

Saucony Endorphin Rift

Look at that grip! These Saucony hiking shoes are designed with 4.5mm lugs that help you tackle especially loose terrain. Though tough on the outside, these kicks are soft on the inside, made with a lightweight, pillowy-soft cushion that adds a nice bounce to your steps. The bespoke Speedroll technology propels you forward, no matter what kind of movement you're doing. The heightened ankles and reinforced lace work ensure a snug – but not uncomfy – fit!

This pair of Saucony Endorphin Rifts goes for $170.
