Laurie Hernandez Loves 'Fourth Wing' As Much As You Do

laurie hernandez interview

For 2016 Olympian and gymnastics extraordinaire Laurie Hernandez, self-care is simply second nature. Whether it’s a night with her favorite book, a foolproof skincare routine, or a coffee, she knows how important it is to take care of yourself — especially when life is crazy. (Seriously, does it get crazier than competing in the Olympics at 16 years old?!)

And now that she's entered adulthood, Laurie has a whole new idea of self-care. "I don't think I fully comprehended the concept of self care [during the Olympics]," she admits. "Now it's more so just making sure that I'm setting time aside for myself...Just making sure that you're doing things that are fueling you, whether that's enhancing rest or allowing your brain to kind of drift off into a different place knowing that you're going to come back into the present." As a daydreamer myself, I second this!

We'll See Laurie Hernandez At The 2024 Olympics — Just In An Unexpected Way!

Laurie Hernandez — who's currently partnering with beauty brand OLAY for their Cleansing Melts— will serve as an NBC correspondent for women's gymnastics at the 2024 Paris Olympics, which kick off July 26. "Going to Paris this summer is going to be a lot of fun," she says. "I've never been to Paris, so I'm really excited to go and check out that, and just to eat the food and witness everything there."

Naturally, I have to ask if she has any fun stories from the 2016 Olympics — my favorite year! "There were a lot of wonderful moments between friends I think a lot of us just cherish and we'll chat about every so often when they come up," she reveals. "But for the most part, it was a really, really serious environment. So being able to find ways that we could just relax around each other — that was hard but important."

While finding ways to have fun was a vital part of competing in Rio, Laurie also says it's a lesson she'd tell her 5-year-old self. "Gymnastics is a sport where you have to mature pretty early on," she says. "And I think I gripped that pretty tightly as a kid, and that was also reinforced by everyone around me. So I would just go back and tell her to keep being a kid and keep enjoying the little things people get so excited about, specifically the Summer Olympics and specifically gymnastics."

Laurie Hernandez On Growing Up

While Laurie jokes she's grown in height since both those kindergarten days and Rio, she's proud of her emotional growth, too. "Being 23 versus 16 feels like two completely different lifetimes," she admits. "And I think also doing one sport and training for one thing from like five years old up until 2021 is such a very specific lifestyle, versus not doing sports at all and being a student and working and just being in young twenties and figuring out how life works in that way, separate from sport."

"Being in college has caused a lot of growth," Laurie, who's an acting major, continues. "It's taught me how to make new friends that aren't sport-related, which wasn't something that I was used to, and also being able to trust that people will just see me for whoever is showing up that day. And I'm not just an athlete anymore when I'm in class, I'm a student like everyone else."

She also admits her parents have played a huge role in helping her stay grounded. "There's a lot of joy in the way that [my parents] just exist and in the way that they've raised me and my siblings," she continues. "I know that that's not a common experience, and I think that colors everything that I'm doing."

"I also do therapy once a week," she adds. "Therapy is great...It feels like holding me accountable but in a way that's really quite validating. So, just checking in with yourself and making sure that you're giving yourself what you need and if you're lacking something, being able to communicate that and not pretend like you don't need it, that's an important thing."

Laurie Hernandez Looks Toward The Future

When she's not doing aerials, winning gold medals, or running lines for class, Laurie's probably reading. The Dancing With The Starsalum just finished The Shadow of Kyoshi, and has been very vocal about her love for Fourth Wing— she posts hilarious character videos and even hosted a conversation with author Rebecca Yarros! Laurie's a writer herself, and penned I Got This: To Gold and Beyond in 2017 and young reader's version She's Got This the following year. Up next, she'd love to write a novel.

"I always get random scenes and I'm constantly trying to figure out how I can piece them together," she says. "I think a big dream would just be to release like a [duology] or a trilogy of a fantasy fiction story...All of my main characters have some kind of good versus evil type thing. I'm like, 'Ok, very Star Wars!'...But yeah, I think that would rock."

"I'm getting ready to take a class in the fall [semester] that's on like, fiction, fantasy novels and how to world build and do character work and dialogue and whatnot," she says. "I love writing, so being able to gear more towards novels, I've done a bit of screenwriting and whatnot for school, but being able to shift into the novel world, that's something that I'm really interested in."

Pretending to be sick to get out of something is a tale as old as time according to Prime Video's My Lady Jane. At the end of the new TV show's pilot, Emily Bader's Jane Grey fakes an illness to get out of her arranged marriage (a move that is honestly inspiring). So, naturally, when I talked to the cast at the 2024 Tribeca Festival, I immediately asked about when they had faked an illness.

@britandco Edward Bluemel spilled on starring in #MyLadyJane and the scenes that made him LOL #tribeca#edwardbluemel#sexeducation#premiere#redcarpet#primevideo♬ original sound - Brit + Co

"You know what," Edward Bluemel says. "One I did [pretend to be sick] to get out of an audition that I just really, really knew I wasn't gonna get and was too scared [to try] — a moment of cowardice, if you will."

Emily Bader also weighed in, admitting that when she was younger, "there could have been some nurse visits without proper cause back in elementary...high school...all the schools."

"But look, school's tough," she jokes. "Being Queen? Getting married? Tougher. But we all got our struggles."

@britandco Emily Bader told us about her #MyLadyJane costumes and her favorite scene to film! #emilybader#tribeca#premiere#redcarpet#primevideo♬ original sound - Brit + Co

One particular struggle for both Emily Bader and Edward Bluemel during My Lady Jane was getting through their scenes without laughing. There are so many witty one-liners and quippy conversations that had me LOL'ing, and there's one costar both leads admit made them laugh more than others: Rob Brydon.

"I was, like, fully laughing in most of the takes," Edward says of working with his onscreen dad. "He's an amazing comedic actor, he's an improviser, he will constantly do things slightly differently, he'll constantly mess with the script. He had us all laughing and being very, very unprofessional while trying to get through quite serious scenes."

"He is so brilliant," Emily says. "He's hard to do a scene [with] cause he's really funny."

Like I’ve said before, I’m annoyingly particular about how my clothes fit me. And with so many types of biker shorts on the market, I haven’t been able to track down the absolute perfect style for my preferences and body type – until now.

Meredith Holser

This hasn't been an easy feat whatsoever, mostly because I have a fairly strict criteria for how biker shorts should look and feel when I wear them.

When shopping for biker shorts, I prioritize designs that feel super soft to the touch, are form-fitting (but not restrictive), have a 5-inch inseam (or less – I like to show ‘em some leg), and most importantly, eliminate the camel toe effect (invasive crotch seams give me the ick, IYKYK).

In my journey to find the perfect pair of black biker shorts, I knew I wanted something I can wear for workouts like climbing and hiking, but also casually for things like grocery trips and lowkey friend hangouts.

Amazon

Yeoreo Seamless High Waisted Workout Shorts

I started my search by scrolling on none other than Amazon, because the countless user reviews usually help me get a feel for what the product is really like. These Yeoreo biker shorts were at the top of my list since they boast 4.4 out of 5 stars with 1,734 total reviews. After reading they were comfy and flattering, I decided to give them a try. I ordered a size large.

As much as I wanted to like them (after spending $20 on them), the shorts were way too tight and the fabric they were made out of ended up being really thick and restrictive, especially around the tummy and thighs. Now, don’t get me wrong – as a girl on the thicker side, I love a little bit of tummy control, but these shorts dug into me quite deep, and I simply couldn’t see myself being comfortable in them for any occasion. For a size large, they didn’t really fit like it.

Meredith Holser

So, I defeatedly returned them and decided to look elsewhere. Of course, I’m a Target girl at heart, so I made a beeline to my nearest store the following day. That’s when I stumbled upon the All in Motion Everyday Soft Ultra High-Rise Bike Shorts in the athleisure section, and I’m so glad I gave them a chance! I picked up a size large and found much more success than I did on Amazon.

Meredith Holser

These biker shorts are extremely soft. The stretchy material reminds me exactly of Lululemon’s signature Align fabrication, which is known to be “buttery-soft.” I feel like I get the same tactile feel from these Target biker shorts, which is satisfying given the cost comparison between the two. For example, a similar style at Lululemon (the Lululemon Align High-Rise Shorts) clocks in at $64, while the Target shorts are just $20.

Meredith Holser

I adore that these biker shorts are wonderfully flattering without ever being uncomfortable. I shouldn't have to sacrifice either of those things! I like that the stretchiness lends them to be adjustable, too. For example, I like to hike the bottom hems up a bit on my legs to show, well, more of my legs. When I do this with these Target shorts, they never dig into my thighs or make them look like they’re uncomfortably squeezing out from the fabric. Further, I’m able to customize the fit around my backside (we all love a lil’ booty lift!), which is a nice perk when I want to pair them with just a sports bra or crop top for working out.

Meredith Holser

When I picked up these shorts, I was initially worried about one single red flag about them – the crotch seam! I typically never opt for biker shorts with this dreaded middle seam, but something in me was willing to overlook it. And I'm glad I did! Since purchasing them (and chronically wearing them) I haven’t run into any sort of complications ‘down there’ with the crotch seam. While other shorts would dig into my body and create an unflattering, uncomfortable look, this one hasn’t at all.

Target

All in Motion Everyday Soft Ultra High-Rise Bike Shorts

The best part about these biker shorts is being able to share them with everyone. They’re sold in sizes XS-4X, so I’m led to believe there’s a pair out there for a wide range of body types. Since they’re supremely stretchy, they’re definitely adaptable to different waist, hip, and thigh sizes. Aside from the classic black color, they’re available in hues like ocean blue, coral pink, and a serene green.

The fair price is another great perk worth mentioning. For just $20, I feel like I definitely reap their value. I’ve worn them everywhere from outside walks to the climbing gym and even weekend brunches with my pals. Plus, I haven’t seen any major signs of wear just yet. I’ve sent these shorts through the wash at least three times now (I wear them so much), and the fabric has only gotten better with time.

We're just a little over four months away from the premiere of Gladiator 2and the anticipation is real. It's no secret that we've been imagining what Paul Mescal will look like while he's in battle, but we were admittedly unprepared for the first look at him as Lucius. Just typing the name makes us feel warm and fuzzy inside. Maybe even spicy.

But Vanity Fairtruly gave us a treat because they shared even more BTS looks at the Gladiator 2 cast. By the looks of it, this movie is going be the pre-Thanksgiving treat we talk about over dinner.

www.instagram.com

We just have one question: Is it too late to apply to be extras in Gladiator 2? Based on Paul Mescal's muscles, it appears his character Lucius has been training for the exact moment he'll enter the area to fight his opponents.

Just look at his stance in the first image. That is the stance of a confident man who's strategically planning how to take down whoever dares to approach him with malicious intent in their eyes.

Aside from that, we're excited to see Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, Denzel Washington, and Joseph Quinn lose themselves in their characters. Speaking of Joseph Quinn, we almost didn't recognize him as Emperor Geta!

www.instagram.com

Lucius definitely looks like he knows how to skillfully wield a sword — and do serious damage to his opponents. Also, there's something in his eyes that signals he is not there to lose.

No one ever said being a gladiator would be easy, but a part of us wishes we could be the extras that wipe the blood and sweat from Lucius' brow after each battle. Alas, we'll just have to pine for him from afar.

We hope you have as much fun scrolling through Vanity Fair's first look at Gladiator 2 as we are.

P.S. We won't tell anyone if you screenshot a few of these pics...for research.

I’m all about ease when it comes to doing my makeup. I’m a fiend for a tinted sunscreen that I can rub in with my hands, as well as cream blushes that don’t require a single brush. I share the same sentiment when it comes to applying eyeshadow – I don’t want to (nor do I have the time to) sit at my vanity for 20 minutes buffing out shade after shade.

Luckily, I have found the best-kept secret to crafting easy, yet head-turning eye looks: liquid eyeshadow. And there’s one in particular that earns me endless compliments every time I wear it!

Meredith Holser

I’ve gotten compliments on it essentially everywhere from coffee shops and grocery stores, to bars and restaurants. This holy grail product is none other than the r.e.m. beauty Midnight Shadows Lustrous Liquid Eyeshadow – more specifically, the color ‘fembot.’

Fembot is described as a “sheer iridescent blue shift” shade that allows you to go “from subtle to standout in seconds.” And I undeniably get that experience from this product. All it takes is a few seconds of application and patting it out to get the iridescent and glittery standout effect.

Meredith Holser

The Midnight Shadows Lustrous Liquid Eyeshadow is exceptionally long-wearing. It stays on just as well during my entire workday as it does after a sweaty night spent dancing at the club. Based on my experience, it doesn’t noticeably wear off, fade, or flake over time. And that’s typically without any primer – I’ll simply wear it on my bare lids, or occasionally, over a light layer of concealer and powder. I've found I get the best wear out of it when I blend it while it's still wet.

Meredith Holser

Additionally, this eyeshadow goes on so easily with a tapered applicator. The applicator works wonders on its own, but I prefer to blend the product out with my middle finger to ensure a totally seamless look. Even when I layer the product over other hues (like a subtle bronzy brown in my crease), it doesn’t disturb what’s underneath at all.

The Verdict

Meredith Holser

I’d say the most stunning part about this eyeshadow is its glittery duo-chrome effect. When I stand in the right light, it boasts a more blue color, but is still fairly pink. I haven’t tried out any of the 10 other colors available, but they all appear super pigmented and shimmery for creating different looks.

This liquid eyeshadow from r.e.m. beauty expedites my eye makeup looks by a lot. Compared to the time it takes to buff and blend out powder eyeshadows to perfection, I save tons of time. Most importantly, it delivers a unique, shimmery color that catches the attention of strangers to friends alike.

r.e.m. beauty Midnight Shadows Lustrous Liquid Eyeshadow in 'fembot'

This liquid eyeshadow from Ariana Grande's r.e.m. beauty brand is described as a "powerfully pigmented, high-performance liquid shadow with a lustrous, waterproof finish." It's earned nearly 5 stars from reviewers on the r.e.m. beauty website, and boasts 3.8 out of 5 stars on Ulta.com.

I absolutely rate this shadow 5/5 stars due to its impressive color payoff, long-wearing ability, and ease of application!
