This Is the Story Behind One of Your Favorite Moments in ‘Legally Blonde’

It’s been more than 15 years since Legally Blonde hit theaters, but we’re still learning fascinating tidbits about the movie — including why two of the stars ended up having to wear wigs. Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we also now know the story behind one of the film’s most memorable moments: the bend-and-snap.

As you no doubt remember, Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) teaches the bend-and-snap to her nail artist and friend, Paulette (Jennifer Coolidge), so she can attract the attention of a cute UPS delivery man. Several other salon customers and stylists join in, creating something of a mini dance party.

According to EW, however, that scene was almost something very different. “[Producer] Marc [Platt] wanted a B plot for Paulette,” Legally Blonde co-writer Karen McCullah told the magazine. “At first we were like, ‘Should the store be robbed?'”

Co-writer Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith added, “I think we spent a week or two trying to figure out what the B plot and this big set piece should be. There were crime plots. We were pitching scene after scene and it all felt very tonally weird.”

But then they had a breakthrough. While sitting at a bar in LA, McCullah asked, “What if Elle shows [Paulette] a move so she can get the UPS guy?” Smith was so into the idea that she immediately jumped up to act out what such a move would look like. “It was a spontaneous invention,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “It was a completely drunken moment in a bar.”

Who knew that “spontaneous invention” would become such an iconic moment?

The '90s were a great time, according to millennials. It was a time of rollerblading, listening to cassette players, playing Super Mario Bros. on Nintendos, having birthday parties at Chuck E. Cheese, and more. Besides this and other pop culture moments that went viral before social media existed, the '90s gave us classic stores we used to frequent as kids.

Despite meeting their demise as the Y2K age took over, we'll never forget the fun memories (and maximalist vibes) these stores gave us!

Take a walk down memory lane by revisiting our favorite '90s stores that will take you back in time (and make you feel old):

Getty Images

1. Party City

Our hearts are hurting because we don't understand why one of the most popular decor stores is closing. The brand was apparently facing "financial challenges," according to it's CEO Barry Litwin (via CNN). There were other issues behind the scenes, but everything trickled down to money, or a lack thereof.

It's so shocking because some of us just picked up a few holiday items from Party City this month! It was one of the stores that seemed to have everything we needed before Amazon became the mega wholesaler that it is today.

I guess this means we should've cherished Party City a little more because it's officially gone.

Getty Images

2. Blockbuster

Long before streaming platforms like Netflix and Peacock existed, people used to spend Friday nights looking at rows of VHS movies to rent. If you were lucky, your parents would stop by Blockbuster before picking up pizza for dinner. It was the ultimate '90s treat…until it wasn’t.

When we want to remember what it felt like visiting Blockbuster, we fast forward to that one scene in I Am Legend where Dr. Robert Neville is going to 'rent' movies. It's a little cringe now that we think about it, but it's the closet memory we have of spending at least 30 minutes picking out the VHS or DVD to watch.

Getty Images

3. Circuit City

Raise your hand if you remember getting your first CD player or computer from Circuit City. The name alone conjures fun memories of running up and down the aisles pretending we could afford all the fun electronics. We watched desktop computers slowly morph into laptops, which seemed like an exciting time. Also, some of us watched our parents lament the cost of the required Texas Instrument calculators we needed for math class.

Although Circuit City isn't around like it used to be, we'll never forget watching the world change through its eyes.

Getty Images

4. Virgin Music Store

If you wanted to be a part of the cool crowd, you visited the Virgin music store. We aptly remember the neon sign and memorable displays that beckoned to us. Although we could find some of the same CDs at Circuit City, the store’s design didn’t feel stuffy.

Getty Images

5. Radio Shack

This one’s personal because we stood in lines with our parents when they bought their first cell phones and DVD players. Also, one of our parents may or may not have purchased a very coveted Bratz convertible that played music from Radio Shack.

Even though it wasn’t the biggest store, it gave us a taste of what the future had for us. Little did we know we’d lose this sweet store though.

6. Border's

As much as we love recommending books from Amazon and local bookshops, we miss when Border’s was around. There’s not much to say about this store besides how grown-up we felt when our parents would let us spend time there while they shopped at their favorite stores in the mall.

Getty Images

7. KB Toys

Aside from Toys ‘R’ Us, we also remember when K.B. Toys was popular. Not unlike today, there wasn’t such a thing as having too many toy stores. Sometimes we found things at K.B.s that felt like a treat. The cluttered aisles probably annoyed our parents, but we were always happy when we were allowed to pick something out.

Getty Images

8. Wet Seal

Yes, Wet Seal made the list of stores we loved in the '90s. Unlike Goody’s, it was specifically geared towards pre-teens and teens who wanted to wear the latest fashions. It was one of the the places to discover your style at the time even if it meant leaving piles of clothes for weary store associates to put back (sorry!)

Though we miss it, we hope no one tries to revive it because we’re sure we’d see a few outdated fashion trends.

Getty Images

9. Esprit

This was another store that screamed 'All American Teen Store.' Unlike Wet Seal, the store's layout and clothing were a little more 'sophisticated.' It spoke to teens who are now adults with a sleeker preppy style. It sounds like a reach, but it's not if you think about it. This store could give you logomania, tenniscore, or something that resembled the outfits from Saved By the Bell at the same time.

10. Goody's

Were you really a '90s kid if your mom didn’t drag you to Goody’s? Shockingly enough, we hardly ever complained because it felt like a huge store we could play in. Plus, it had clothes for everyone.

And if there were a sale during BTS season? You could always count on our moms to leave the store with stuffed shopping bags.

Which '90s stores do you wish were still open? Let us know on Facebook!

Fans of Fourth Wing are screaming all over the world because Rebecca Yarros' third book in the Empyrean series is in stores TODAY! It's us, we're fans — along with over half of BookTok.

We can't believe we finally get to learn more about Violet Sorrengail's journey, but we know you still have burning questions about what to expect.

We're not sharing any spoilers, but we've done a little digging to bring you up to speed because who doesn't want to know what Rebecca Yarros has planned for our favorite heroine?

I'm new to the Empyrean series. Are "Fourth Wing" and "Iron Flame" really worth reading?

Amazon

I'm not going to lie to you. The editorial team, including myself, are extremely biased about Fourth Wingand Iron Flame. From my perspective, I think these are great books for anyone who had the pleasure of growing up during the great Harry Potter era and moved on to watchingGame of Thrones and House of Dragons.

What's the inspo behind "Onyx Storm" title?

Rebecca Yarros/Instagram

Knowing what we do about the manifestation of Violet's powers, I think Onyx Storm could hint she's going to play an even larger role in the series. According to a fan theory shared on TikTok(via Empyrean Riders), it's believed that Violet and Xaden Riorson are actually gods. Stay with me here.

Empyrean Riders noted that Violet's last name means heavenly and that she's able to control time thanks to her connection to the young dragon Andarna (I love her so much!). That sounds pretty god-like to me.

And when asked which two Taylor Swift songs describe Onyx Storm, Rebecca Yarros chose "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" from The Tortured Poets Department and "So It Goes..." from Reputation. "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" is one of Taylor's most powerful songs and definitely translates the idea that Violet's powers are going to be stronger than ever, while "So It Goes..." is equal parts suspense and seduction, and is TOTALLY about "all the pieces fall right into place" to get together with the right person.

There's so much more to unpack so I suggest grabbing a yummy snack while you fall down the rabbit hole.

When did Rebecca Yarros announce she's done writing book no. 3 in the series?

Rebecca Yarros/Instagram

On June 17, Rebecca Yarros shared this image of her laptop to indicate she'd finished the third book in the Empyrean series.

She wrote, "(Pic from one of the very many locations in which this book was written)," towards the end of the caption before adding a few relevant hashtags to it.

Is "Onyx Storm" available for purchase?

Rebecca Yarros/Instagram

Rebecca Yarros exclusively told Good Morning America that fans could expect the book to hit shelves January 21, 2025 (that's today)!

She said, "There will be politics, new adventures, old enemies and of course, dragons." There's no way she could forget the dragons because I'd would've started a riot over them. They deserve to have their stories told forever.

As luck would have it, Cosmopolitan received an exciting first look at what's to come in Onyx Storm. The excerpt begins with Violet realizing the Venin have found their way into Basgiath War College and are wreaking havoc. Alongside Rhiannon, Sawyer, and Ridoc, she races to stop the Venin from releasing Jack Barlowe from his prison cell.

However, Violet's shocked when she discovered one of the "dark wielders" has a long silver braid that closely resembles her own. Before she can fully react, the woman disappears. According to Screen Rant, there are possible theories about why Violet saw her and what this means for her growing power.

Towards the end of the excerpt, Violet discovers the Venin want to capture her too. Also, Xaden makes his long-awaited appearance and it's clear their playful banter in the face of danger hasn't changed. That he hasn't fully changed into the Venin Violet's used to seeing.

How does "Onyx Storm" look in person?

Jasmine Williams

As you can see, the cover of Onyx Storm is absolutely breathtaking. It's moodier than its predecessors, but I know it's because of the darker nature of what's to come. It does have "Brave the dark" written at top so that's also a huge hint that readers will be in for the ride of our lives.

How do each of the Empyrean book covers compare to each other?

Jasmine Williams

For anyone who's wondering if there's a huge difference between the covers, the answer is YES. Fourth Wing has a lighter gold appearance with contrasting black letters, while Iron Flame appears more bronze in nature. In my opinion, it's a testament to Violet being forged in fire while everything she thought she knew is also going up in flames.

Seeing Onyx Storm next to them shows just how ominous the tone of the third book is which is equally terrifying and thrilling. But enough chatting! If you have your copy, it's time to start reading about Violet Sorrengail's fate.

Yes! According to The Hollywood Reporter, the remake of the animated film will be done with both live-action and CGI.
