"Love At First Sight" Is The Fall Rom-Com You've Been Waiting For

Jennifer E. Smith's Love At First Sight opens with a quote from Charles Dickens. "It's a Dickens quote that I love that says, 'And oh, there are days in this life worth life and worth death,'" the author tells me over Zoom. "To me, that's always been the center of the story. It's the fact that you can have all these positive things and negative things happen in the course of a day. That there's grief and there's love and there's life."

The novel's rom-com adaptation, which hit Netflix on September 15, follows Hadley (Haley Lu Richardson) and Oliver (Ben Hardy), who wind up on the same airplane from New York City to London. They hit it off immediately, but after they land (and immediately get separated), they realize they're in London for wildly different reasons: Hadley is here for her father's wedding to a woman she's never met, and Oliver is here for his mother's living memorial.

"From the start, it was really important to try and make it feel quirky and aspirational and fun and joyful, and then also feel grounded and truthful," director Vanessa Caswill says.

"I was so, so pleased with the way it all worked out with the tone of it because I think that this story is so much about wish fulfillment," Smith says. "I think what was so important, and what I was so grateful for, is there's a version of this that's incredibly cheesy. [Instead,] everyone involved with the film took this very kind of lovely, emotional, romantic idea and told it in a way that had a lot of charm and character and life to it, but that also felt very true and grounded."

The scene that best captures this balance would have to be the living memorial for Oliver's mother, who's battling cancer and decides she doesn't want to miss out on a celebration of her own life. Instead of throwing a regular memorial, the family hosts a Shakespeare-themed one, featuring costumes, recitations, and performances.

"It is pretty wacky, it is a sort of crazy thing to do, but I actually felt like those people would do it," Caswill says. "So it was really about asking in each moment, 'How is this truthful? How is this honest?' And making sure it felt like it was."

It's a scene that could have come across strange and disjointed, but instead it nearly brought me to tears. This dedication to truth and honesty — without sacrificing the beauty and love that we love to see in a rom-com — really sets the film apart.

Aside from the memorial, Love At First Sight features different nods to Shakespeare. Jameela Jamil's role as narrator could be considered a wink to A Midsummer Night's Dream's Puck, while a scene involving Hadley, Oliver, and a balcony is totally Romeo and Juliet. Plus, the pure joy and beauty that comes through the screen doesn't just emphasize romance between two partners — it emphasizes that life itself can be romantic.

Every scene in the film (the memorial, Hadley's father's wedding, sitting in a market under fairy lights) is a joy to watch because of how much fun the actors are having. While Smith wasn't able to join the set during the main filming because of COVID, she did get to join them for some reshoots.

"I was able to go and spend some time with Haley and Jameela, and the two of them are just hilarious," Smith says. "They're hilarious together, they're hilarious the moment the camera turns off. It shocked me how funny they can be, and then how quickly they can get into character when it's time to roll. I was such a fan of both of them beforehand. I was a fan of Ben's. I was a huge fan of Rob Delaney, Sally Phillips, Dexter Fletcher. Everybody is just so talented. This is really a dream cast."

"We had a funny time when we were shooting the memorial," Caswill says. "There was a sequence of performances where people were performing for the family, and this very sweet guy had learned a Shakespeare speech and he was taking it very seriously." The actor in question couldn't seem to remember his lines, and spent the entire sequence trying to just get through the speech (a moment that actually made it into the film). "The crew were in the audience just cracking up because he was so funny. And we were saying, 'It's brilliant. It's brilliant!'"

"When the family were together, they were just bantering and improving and laughing, it was just fantastic," she continues. "The day that we shot the father-daughter dance [with Haley Lu Richardson and Rob Delaney] was the most joyful day because I don't think anyone had been to a party for so long, for almost a year. We had the music up and everyone's dancing, and it was just pure joy and silliness."

The joy from the performances is emphasized by the film's color palette (shoutout to costume designer Kirsty Halliday and production designer Francesca Massariol!), and it's just bursting with different shades of red and green, a variety of textures, and different kinds of light.

"You notice it from the first moment, and I think the way it feels so stylized, it gives it a real whimsical quality," Smith says. "A book is not as visual a medium, and to see it come to life in that way with these actors, with these colors, with this set design, when I saw the early pictures of sets — I've been thrilled all the way through."

"We were obsessed with the palette," Caswill says. "The palette was like, everything."

"It was so important that we were always on exactly the same page with what we did with color, what we're doing with lighting, and how is it going to create a really distinct tone the whole way through," she continues. Although when I ask whether they intended to tie red to Hadley and green to Oliver, she admits they weren't quite that intentional. "I think that might have just been a nice happy accident."

But the colors and design aren't the only inspirational forces for the two creatives, and before we finish our chat, I have to ask what's been inspiring them. To breathe life into new projects and new characters, Smith loves to take in other people's work or go on a walk and take in the scenery around her. "I think it's always a well you're trying to dip back into, especially in between projects and when you're trying to figure out what comes next, and sometimes it's just space and other people's words and stories that can really jog something," she says.

"I also spend quite a lot of time with music, I think particularly when I had the script in front of me and I was like, 'What does this scene feel like?'" Caswill says. "I would just go off and walk and play music and go, 'This is the feeling of it. This is the color of it. This is how it comes life.' And then when a song would resonate, even if the song's got nothing to do with the final outcome, it just kind of pushes life into it and an energy and a mood and a tone, and that kind of lights me up in a way."

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Ryan Gosling has already stepped foot in Barbieland and proved his chops as an action star in The Fall Guy, and soon he's taking on outer space. (And no I'm not talking about a Blue Origin space flight). Ryan Gosling is joining the Star Wars universe! His new movie is being directed by Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy and it's going to be one heck of an intergalactic adventure.

Here's everything we know about Ryan Gosling's Star Wars: Starfighter, coming to theaters May 28, 2027.

Is Ryan Gosling going to be in Star Wars?

Yes, Ryan Gosling is going to lead a brand new Star Wars movie called Star Wars: Starfighter.

The movie was announced at the Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, and both Ryan and Shawn showed up IRL! The Fall Guy proved he has what it takes to maintain that cool-guy vibe (just like Han Solo honestly), and I hope Starfighter has the same urban sci-fi adventure I love to see in Star Wars.

Where can I watch Star Wars: Starfighter?

Star Wars: Starfighter is coming to theaters May 28, 2027.

The movie's coming just after Avengers: Secret Wars, but it's not the next time Marvel and Star Wars could duke it out in the box office. Avengers: Doomsday is coming to theaters May 1, 2026, ahead of The Mandalorian & Grogu, which premieres May 22, 2026. Yes. That's a lot of Pedro Pascal, thank goodness.

What is the Star Wars Starfighter movie?

Star Wars: Starfighter is a brand new Star Wars movie that's set apart from any of the trilogies we've seen so far (although it looks like it's part of a brand new trilogy!). The movie is a "standalone adventure taking place approximately five years after the events of 2019's Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker."

But even though the final movie ended on a peaceful note, Ryan Gosling's character is sure to be in for some kind of crazy adventure. "This is the perfect place to start this journey for us, because it's such an incredible reminder of why we're going to make this movie and who we're going to make this movie for," Ryan said at the Star Wars Celebration (via Entertainment Weekly). "[The] script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters."

"This is a standalone. It's not a prequel, not a sequel. It's a new adventure," Shawn added. "It's set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet."

When is Starfighter filming?

Filming for the movie is scheduled to begin the fall of 2025.

What is a Starfighter?

A starfighter in Star Wars is a small but armed starship used in battle.

The quiet luxury of European-inspired decor is having a moment, with relaxed linens, rustic plaster finishes, and earthy palettes leading the way. Jackie Kosnett and Martina Biegel, the design duo behind Galerie Design + Build, reimagined an outdated 1950s home in Mar Vista, Los Angeles, turning it into a stunning retreat inspired by their travels to Italy.

Originally a cramped two-bedroom with an awkward layout, the home included an unusual sunroom addition that felt more like a makeshift trailer.

Outdated wallpaper and years without a refresh left the home in need of a serious renovation. Also, those curtains!

1. Earthy Color Palette

Fresh off a trip to Italy, the principals infused the design with Mediterranean warmth, pairing clean contemporary lines with soft textures, rich materials, and an earthy, neutral palette. They repurposed the underutilized sunroom, relocating the kitchen there and turning it into a sleek, inviting space.

“We wanted to create a serene escape from the city through a neutral yet warm palette,” says Jackie.

In true Italian spirit, the kitchen serves as the heart of the home — designed with limestone, European white oak, plaster finishes, and unlacquered brass, anchoring the home's quiet luxury aesthetic.

2. Vintage Decor

"From there we added vintage pieces from our own private collection, including a curved mohair sofa for a pop of color, Willy Guhl planters and a Pirman armchair by Heinz Julien," says Martina. I love the European inspiration and classic furniture design.

Blending old and new is a signature of Galerie Design + Build. Vintage lighting was thoughtfully layered in to bring character and a sense of history to the space.

3. Textured Materials

The pair could give a master class in layered neutral design. “Bringing in textured materials like leathered and tumbled natural stone, mixing different wood finishes, patterns in tile layouts or fabrics, and blending in vintage lighting and furniture will add depth while maintaining a neutral palette.” says Jackie.

Limestone, European white oak, plaster finishes, and unlacquered brass continue throughout the home to add continuity.

Quiet luxury isn’t limited to neutrals — calming paint colors and vintage art can bring just as much serenity and sophistication.

Emily Henry not only new pops books year after year, but she also has a knack for frequently announcing exciting book adaptations, too! From launching Funny Story(already love it) to news of the Beach Read movie (crossing our fingers for a Ayo Edibiri and Paul Mescal announcement any day now), EmHen's had a busy year — and it just got even busier.

After Henry announced the news herself on her email newsletter, "Emily's Grocery List,"Deadline confirmed that Netflix is in the process of adapting Happy Place. We've got the scoop on everything you should know about the newest Emily Henry adaption!

Here's everything we know about Emily Henry's Happy Place show, coming to Netflix soon.

Who's in the Happy Place cast?

Seacia Pavao/Netflix

While we don't have a confirmed cast yet, we're not-so-patiently waiting patiently to see who's attached to this adaption. And there's one star Emily Henry would love to see in the movie.

"For Harriet in Happy Place, I think Eve Hewson would be wonderful," the author told People. "And usually, when I am thinking of casting, I'm not actually thinking of someone who looks like that person. I'm just thinking of someone who has that same vibe. But she actually does look more or less how Harriet is in my head."

Where can I watch Happy Place?

Devyn Glista/St. Blanc Studios

We don't have an official Happy Place release date yet, but the series will be available to stream on Netflix.

What is Happy Place about?

Amazon

The Happy Place plot follows a couple, Harriet and Wyn, as they navigate their broken relationship. The stories winds over the course of many years: as friends, lovers, fiancées, and now...whatever they are. Every summer, they go to the beach house with their closest friends, but this year they set out for one last hurrah before the beach house is sold.

Their whole friend group thinks they're still together, so they pretend to be together just for a short while just to enjoy one last summer all together. Only...it's harder than you think to pretend you're not in love with someone when you are, in fact, still in love.

Is Happy Place being adapted for the screen?

Emily Henry/Instagram

Emily Henry officially confirmed that Happy Place is being adapted for Netflix. The author wrote in her email newsletter, "Happy Place is going to be a series on Netflix! I’ve been dying to tell you about it forever, and there’s actually A LOT more to share very soon, but since this little bit of news leaked today, I wanted to be the one to FORMALLY tell you."

She goes on to say she's thrilled about the series and even more excited that they've allowed her to be closely involved in the project, so that it can live up to her, and the readers', dream and vision for the book! She said that she wants to make it a series that the fans will love and be happy with. We couldn't be more excited to hear that!

Is Happy Place by Emily Henry going to be a series?

Emily Henry/Instagram

Happy Place will be made into a TV series with Netflix! This is great news, because it works better for the plot for the project to cover multiple episodes. The book has quite a long storyline that develops over many years and many summers in the lives of the main characters, so with flashbacks, it will require more time to delve into their stories.

This makes me so excited as a fan, because I believe this allows them the time to do the story justice, and really develop the relationship and chemistry between the two main characters, Harriet and Wyn, as well as the supporting characters also in the book.

Who's producing Netflix's Happy Place show?

Kevin Winter/Getty Images

The series will be produced by Netflix and Jennifer Lopez’s Nuyorican production company. This announcement follows multiple deals between Lopez and Netflix, including their latest release of Atlas, which garnered over 72 million views! Plus, JLo is a certifiable rom-com queen, so we know EmHen will be in the best of hands with her!

Who's the showrunner for the Happy Place show?

Rich Fury/Getty Images

We can't escape the world of Bridgerton because one of the show's Co-Executive Producers — Leila Cohan — is attached to the Happy Place TV show! She'll be the showrunner and co-writer for the series which means fans of Emily Henry's fun rom-com are in for a treat (via Deadline).

Are there other Emily Henry book adaptations being made?

Amazon

Beach Read, a beloved Henry best-seller, is being made into a movie! Fans continue to speculate that Paul Mescal and Ayo Edibiri will star in it, especially after Henry said they would be amazing for the roles. Even Paul told Awards Watch he wants to do a romcom with Ayo...so, it's basically meant to be!

People We Meet On Vacationis also getting the movie treatment. The cast will be led by Tom Blyth and Emily Baer, and incredible author, screenplay writer, and rom-com lover Yulin Kuang is set to adapt the script, so that's bound to be a fabulous match!

Finally, we're getting a movie for Book Lovers. According to Us! Weekly, some fans think this is the movie for Ayo and Paul, but we're not convinced. Definitely keeping our eye out for who is cast, though!

We're so excited for the many Emily Henry projects in the works, and pending for the future. Emily Henry said at the end of her newsletter, "I cannot WAIT to tell you more, about this project and others, right here on my grocery list just as soon I’m given the green light. For now, though, I’m back to working on [REDACTED]. Happy reading, my friends."

Yikes, I'm scared and excited all at once, because she has taken over my life. Stay tuned her for further updates on her upcoming projects!

The '90s called to let everyone know we're finally getting a sequel to Clueless, but we won't be reliving 97 minutes of nostalgia. Rather, a series is being developed right now and we've got all the details about it! I, for one, am ready to see Cher Horowitz and crew all grown up because the original movie's ending alluded to their bright futures.

Scroll to find out what to expect from the Clueless TV series, plus revisit the scene that made me fall in love with playing dress up!

Is there going to be a Clueless 2?

Yes! Variety announced Peacock is developing the Clueless sequel series yesterday. We can already hear Cher saying "Whatever" to someone who's doing something annoying.

Which cast members will be in Clueless 2?

Amy Sussman/Getty Images

As of now, Alicia Silverstone's return as Cher Horowitz is the only cast information that's been publicized (via Variety). We'd love to see Paul Rudd return as Josh and Stacey Dash as Dionne Davenport!

What is Clueless 2 about?

The plot's details are still TBA (to be announced), but Variety is convinced the Clueless sequel series will pick up after the events of the movie.

Who's producing and writing the script for Clueless 2?

Writers Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage and Jordan Weiss are hard at work on the Clueless script. Alicia Silverstone is also an executive producer alongside Amy Heckerling, writer and director of the OG film, and producer Robert Lawrence (via Variety).

Knowing the names who made the iconic film what it is makes me feel relieved the series will be the one fans of the cult classic deserve!

I was 100% convinced I'd be able to wear computer generated outfits which probably explains my love for the now defunct Polyvore. It was a collage sight that became home for those who loved creating virtual style mood boards and I like to think Cher Horowitz inspired it.
