Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” video has been on everyone’s minds since it premiered at the 2017 MTV VMAs. People are digging deep to analyze the clip for hidden references and Easter eggs, but only the video’s director, Joseph Kahn, has offered any real info about it via Twitter. Now, in a new interview with ET, Todrick Hall, who appears as a backup dancer in the choreographed scene, is dishing on what it was like to be on set of the epic video — including just how hard it was to keep it a secret.
“I think it was shot in May,” he told ET. “And it was a huge secret to keep. It speaks volumes of what type of person Taylor is, that she could have all those people on set and then it not leak. People really respect her; she treats everyone so well.”
Hall — who became a member of Tay’s #squad after she saw his videos on YouTube — went on to say that when he got the call, he knew he had to be involved.
“We became BFFs, and then she called and said, ‘I’m working on this project that’s super secret but I know I can trust you. Will you not tell anyone?'” he said. “And I didn’t tell anyone. It was the best! It felt like Christmas came early because when it came out my phone blew up more than it ever has before.”
Fans and critics were surprised to see Swift take such a vengeful new turn in both the “Look What You Made Me Do” song and video. But Hall says he respects that Swift expresses how she feels through her music as opposed to on social media, and that once the cameras stop rolling, the “old” Taylor still shines through.
“I don’t know if I’m supposed to say this,” he divulged, “but on the day that it came out, she sent everybody these beautiful bouquets of flowers and said, ‘Thank you so much for being a part of this and keeping it a secret,’ because it just made it so much more epic.”
While Hall refused to speculate on any of the hidden messages Swift may be trying to convey with the song or video, he will say that she’s at the top of her game.
“Taylor is definitely raising the bar,” he said. “Everybody else better take note.”
