Dreams Do Come True — You CAN Own (and Make!) a Confetti Cannon

Remember when parties meant games, candy and new toys?! Before your celebratory sugar intake of choice came in a cocktail and gifts still came in a huge wrapped box? Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, promotion, engagement or other life event (large or small), grown-ups deserve some fun too! We teamed up with Studio INK to bring a little bit of that festive magic back to adult life and make this specific wish come true: We’ll show you how to make your very own confetti cannon!

Who knew your house (and recycling bin) held the perfect confetti cannon making supplies?! We’re already scheming up all sorts of occasions to use this bad boy. New job? CONFETTI! End to a bad relationship? Good riddance confetti! Roommate not a morning person? Rise and shine confetti! This handy little cannon makes everything better (or at least more entertaining ;) Scroll on to get the full lowdown on how we put ours together.

Materials:

Tools:

Instructions:

  • empty paper towel roll
  • card stock paper
  • tissue paper confetti
  • embroidery thread
  • 2 plastic bottle caps
  • needle
  • tape
  • nail
  • spring

  • hot glue gun
  • hole punch
  • hammer

1. Tape cardstock in the pattern or color of your choice onto your paper roll. Fold the edges of the cardstock into the roll and repeat to add additional strips of color.

2. Nail four holes into the top of one of your plastic bottle caps and string two long pieces of embroidery thread through the holes so that they cross in the middle and leave a long strand coming out of each of the four holes.

3. Hot glue each end of the spring onto a bottle cap so that the cap with the embroidery thread is facing outwards and the plain cap is facing inwards.

4. Punch a hole into either side of your paper roll near the end, place your glued spring into the roll thread-side first and pull two threads through either hole. Hot glue the outer bottle cap into the paper roll and tie all four threads together in a knot.

5. When your hot glue is totally cool, fill the open end of the cannon with confetti, pull back on the string and let go for a confetti explosion!

In our Take 5 series, sponsored by Verizon, we ask women in business about unexpected challenges, their inspirations, recent wins, and how the free Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program has helped propel their business forward. Here, we meet Therise Edwards, founder/CEO of Teshley Solutions, an education consultancy firm that helps students and families navigate the complexities of the education system K through 12.

What is an unexpected business challenge that you faced and how did you overcome it?

I wouldn't call myself a FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid) expert, but I ended up having to know a lot more about it than I ever anticipated. FAFSA is what administers Pell Grants, which is what a lot of colleges base their financial aid on. I knew about the application changes, and some were excellent, but they made a series of critical errors and a lot of parents were scrambling. It was not my intent to have this as my area of focus; it just became a necessity.

What's a recent small win for your business?

Recent small wins are my collaborations. I formed partnerships with one organization that focuses on students with special needs. I hosted a webinar with the executive director of that organization. I formed a partnership with members from an insurance company on planning and paying for college. That was my first corporate sponsorship. And I've got a series of events coming out because others actually reached out to me. One of them I met through another networking platform, but I got to that platform from one of the sessions that I did with Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program.

How did you start to collaborate with external partners?

Just changing my strategies and my approach, and just being more secure and more emphatic in making connections. It ends up being this continual cycle.

Is there a woman in business that you admire or that you look up to?

I have two. Leontyne Anglin, who runs a nonprofit called Beyond Expectations. She works with a small pool of students, but she just gives them enormous exposure and opportunity. She's brilliant with collaborating with individuals and businesses and really bringing the students what they need. And then the other on a bigger scale is Cate Luzio, founder and CEO of Luminary, who taught her Business Plan Bootcamp through the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program. She is just a dynamo. She is just so supportive of women entrepreneurs. She's awesome.

How did the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program help propel your business forward?

All of the collaborations and partnerships with the exception of one all came from joining the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program. I’ve taken all of the free classes and the one on projections and pricing, something every entrepreneur struggles with, was very helpful. There have been so many of them. Sometimes you're completely ignorant in a category so you take the class and it's like, okay, that's good to have. But then sometimes you sign up for it and it's like, oh, yeah, I did know 90 percent of that, but this other 10 percent is going to be very, very helpful.

Get ready for another year of mayhem, because Squid Game season 2 is on its way! The Netflix K-drama / thriller captivated — and horrified — viewers when it premiered on Netflix in 2021, and we are more than ready to see more. And considering it became Netflix's most-watched series, and was so popular it led to comfy Halloween costumes and reality competition Squid Game: The Challenge, we're not alone.

Here's everything you need to know about the Squid Game season 2 release date, cast, and more!

Watch the Squid Game season 2 trailer!

Let the games begin! The Squid Game season 2 trailer brings a whole new set of games to our favorite players, and it's totally reminding me of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. We'll have to wait until December to see whether Gi-hun is really able to bring down the games once and for all.

When is the Squid Game season 2 release date?

Noh Juhan/Netflix

Squid Game season 2 will premiere December 26, 2024. I guess nothing says Christmas like murder and giant, terrifying dolls. Creator Dong-hyuk reportedly took 10 years to write the first season of the hit series, but we're glad it didn't take him that long this time around!

What is Squid Game season 2 about?

Noh Juhan / Netflix

The first season of Squid Game followed contestants chosen to participate in the titular games, a competition that features deadly versions of childhood games. And this time around, Gi-hun is doing everything in his power to take the game down, even if it means "starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion," according to an official synopsis.

"As we all saw at the end of season 1, the main plot of season 2 will be revenge," actor Lee Jung Jae tells All K-Pop. "The key figure who controlled the workings of the games in season 1 was Lee Byung-Hun...it seems that the two of us will be the central figures of this next story."

While season 1 was all about surviving the games, it appears that Squid Game season 2 could be all about bringing them down.

Who is in the Squid Game season 2 cast?

Noh Juhan / Netflix

Netflix announced the cast of Squid Game season 2 in June 2023. In addition to the return of Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo, we'll also see some new characters including Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-geun.

Is Squid Game: The Challenge Season 2 of Squid Game?

Netflix

Squid Game: The Challenge is a competition show inspired by the world of Squid Game. According to the official synopsis from Netflix, the 456 players are all playing familiar and new games and "their strategies, alliances, and character will be put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them."

Who won Squid Game 2023?

Roy Rochlin/Getty Images for Netflix

The winner of Squid Game: The Challenge season 1 is Mai Whelan, while the winner of the fictional Squid Game contest is Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae).

Give us your craziest Squid Game season 2 theory in the comments, and check out what Hwang Dong-hyuk had to say about season 3.

This post has been updated.

The running joke the editorial team and I have is that millennials are tired of living during unprecedented times. From the pandemic to all the other massive moments the last few decades, I've felt like I've been living in a weird vortex for the...majority of my life.

Despite — and maybe sometimes because of — it all, it wasn't until my recent birthday that I realized I've grown a lot. I thought the things I learned in my 20s were clues I'd 'arrived' as a 30-something-year-old, but it turns out I still hadn't fully accepted that learning hard truths isn't always bad in the long run.

I do this weird thing where I tend to focus on things I feel have to be done instead of focusing on how far I've come, but that changed when I turned 33. For the first time, I didn't have a huge celebration that ended in anxiety on my birthday. I relaxed at home with a ton of comfort food, scary movies, and a list of 33 things I have to be grateful for. So, how did I get here?

Let's go back to the beginning of the year, shall we?

I Intentionally Dubbed 2024 My Personal Victory Year

Viridiana Rivera

I, like so many others, woke up on January 1st and decided it would be my year. I set intentional resolutions, goals, and even made sure to be specific about them. Similar to how I write in-depth articles, I broke them into the following sections:

  • Motherhood
  • Relationships
  • Career
  • Wellbeing
  • Spiritual

It's the first year I decided to listen to my heart's desires in order to capture a screenshot of the life I want to live. I even prayed over my resolutions and goals, asking to be guided as I accomplished things or were led to them. As February rolled around, I didn't really think twice about the impact of what I'd done because life started to fall into a familiar hum that becomes mundane after a while.

I guess I needed to be reminded of the intentional goals I'd written down because things got painfully interesting after this.

My First Adult Car Was Totaled

Gustavo Fring

Car accidents are never fun as I've been on the receiving end of one before, but this wasn't like before. This time I was emotionally hurt to learn the first car I'd assumed total responsibility for was no longer going to be mine. Though I knew I was lucky no one was seriously harmed, all I could think about is the morning I paid it off. I had every reason to spend the nice bonus I received from my last job, but I decided paying off my car mattered more in that moment.

This is the car that took me from my parents' home to living on my own, trips out of town, and days spent buckling a newborn into his carseat. For 8 years, this car and I were locked in like besties. It truly felt like we'd grown up together so to have it ripped away so suddenly was heartbreaking.

Even though the SUV I got was aligned with everything my fiancé and I were talking about, I couldn't appreciate it for a while because I all could see what was what I had.

I Took A Chance On A Full-Time Creative Career

George Milton

Once I started making peace with having a new vehicle, I started feeling the urge to leave my first adult job behind. I'd spent 10 years there, but it was becoming obvious that it was time to leave the nest. Similar to my first car, my co-workers watched me go from a wide-eyed college student to a confident adult. Though I learned so much there, I knew it wasn't where I wanted to be forever.

Deciding to leave what felt familiar was one of the scariest things I'd ever done and I spent days wondering if I'd made the right choice. It's not that writing wasn't lucrative, but I had to learn how to navigate a remote job that's been unlike any role I've had before. My imposter syndrome was in overdrive because I was waiting for the shoe to drop off my other foot.

Thoughts like "What if I'm not good enough" or "What if my co-workers hate me," plagued my mind because I couldn't believe I'd taken a chance on myself that seemed like it was working in my favor. That only happens in movies, right? In this case, wrong.

The same month I truly decided to focus on my writing career is when I interviewed Whoopi Goldberg. Since then, I've gone on to talk to different authors and even moderated my first book event in Atlanta. But, it still took a while for me to truly be grateful for the amazing things that's happened this year.

The Day I Turned 33 Put Everything Into Perspective

KoolShooters

PMS plagued me for the better part of last week, so I decided to listen to my body and not do anything for my birthday. I kept waiting for myself to feel disappointed for not getting dressed up, but the feeling never came. The sad part is I almost wanted it to because who doesn't want to celebrate their birthday?

It turns out that I did celebrate, even if it wasn't in the typical 'party and dinner' way.

Deciding to focus on feeling peaceful in my new space, I opened my journal and started writing 33 things I'm grateful for. I didn't think I could find that many things, but it got easier to start being appreciative of life instead of focusing on everything I'd even thought went wrong.

In between bites of pizza and cheesy bread, I dropped all expectations and started writing. The more I wrote, the happier I felt which makes me wonder why I didn't do this before. So, without further ado, here is everything I realized during my gratitude practice this year!

The Things I'm Most Grateful For Right Now:

Brit + Co

"I'm grateful for quiet moments where I can hit the reset button when I need to."

Brit + Co

"I’m grateful for moments I’ve accepted accountability for my actions."

Brit + Co

"I’m grateful for having a supportive family and fiancé."

Brit + Co

"I'm grateful for forgiveness and chances to start over."

Brit + Co

"I’m grateful for the beauty and joy of reading."

Jade Rideout

  • I'm grateful for home-cooked meals.
  • I'm grateful for praying grandmothers.
  • I'm grateful for older siblings I get along with.
  • I'm grateful for reminders I'm not alone.
  • I'm grateful for the gift of writing.
  • I'm grateful for time spent in nature.
  • I'm grateful for having friends in my life who feel like family.
  • I'm grateful for my mom introducing me to therapy before my 20s.
  • I'm grateful for every day I wake up with air in my lungs.
  • I'm grateful for moments that cause me to slow down and think before acting.
  • I'm grateful for multiple seasons of growth.
  • I'm grateful for my first full-time writing job.
  • I'm grateful I work with one of the best teams ever.
  • I'm grateful for having access to food, shelter, and a transportation.
  • I'm grateful for having an active imagination.
  • I'm grateful for being able to watch my son grow.
  • I'm grateful for learning about the ins and outs of postpartum so I can help other new moms!
  • I'm grateful for having a new place to live that's cozy.
  • I'm grateful for watching the seasons change.
  • I'm grateful I get to learn what it means to have a healthy romantic relationship.
  • I'm grateful for boundaries.
  • I'm grateful for understanding my parents betters.
  • I'm grateful I'm still in tune with my inner kid.
  • I'm grateful for book clubs.
  • I'm grateful for the amazing authors I've come across.
  • I'm grateful for funny memes on social media.
  • I'm grateful for hot chocolate — yes, I'm serious.
  • I'm grateful for LIFE itself.

Ironically, some of the things I'm grateful for can serve as inspirational fall quotes — which is perfect since my birthday is days after the Autumn Equinox! Aside from that realization, I can genuinely say writing down what I'm grateful for made my birthday better than it's been in years.

I've been focusing on everything that can go right instead of comparing my life to other people and it's a welcomed change. Maybe this is just one of the perks of getting older. If so, sign me up for more birthdays like this!
