‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Episode 6 Recap: Midge and Susie Are Our New Favorite Pair

Confession time, gang — I’m starting to get sad that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s first season is only eight episodes. I like this show more and more with every passing episode, and it seems like there should be more than just two episodes left. Fortunately for us, Amazon has already picked up the show for a second season.

Until then, let’s enjoy these last few offerings we have. Episode six might actually be my favorite episode so far, because it gives us such great stuff between Midge and Susie. Their relationship is clearly going to be the heart of the show as it goes on, and I love that. I especially like how Randall didn’t turn into a new love interest for Midge. Instead, the episode ended with her falling into Susie’s arms, rather than Randall’s or, God forbid, Joel’s. Well done, show.

But how did we get there? Well, Midge discovers that she can really hold court at parties, so she starts working the “circuit,” using her connections at B. Altman’s to get invited to soirees where she can practice her material. However, when Susie is invited to one, she sees what we all see — this is not stand-up. It’s playing to an entirely different (and easier) audience than what Midge will see in clubs, and it’s a safe space for her.

It makes total sense that Midge would want that kind of comfort level after the two times she bombed in the previous episode, but luckily for her, Susie is there to talk some sense into her about how it’s time to stop licking her wounds and get back out there.

In regards to Randall and his agent, Lew Fogelman, Susie is absolutely right that Midge A) doesn’t need a partner, and B) shouldn’t have spoken to other representation behind Susie’s back. But it wasn’t anything nefarious on Midge’s part. Plus, I think she and Randall do have nice chemistry and patter together. I actually wouldn’t mind if they occasionally worked together, as long as Midge doesn’t abandon her solo work to go hawk Buicks.

That’s really about all there is to Midge’s story line this week, which is also kind of cool. While I still could not care less about Joel, who is having some serious regret about what he did to his life, I do like seeing more of Midge’s family.

Her brother Noah is awesome, because you know he’ll totally be in her corner when her parents find out about her comedy work. And his wife is annoying, but she’s trying so hard and seems very sweet. She’s never going to win over her mother-in-law, Rose, but what can ya do?

Speaking of Rose, we saw her go to her psychic once before, and now that she’s done it again, I hope it’ll become a regular thing. She and Drina are hilarious together, and it really humanizes Rose — something her rigid character desperately needs.

It was also great to see the more human side of Abe. He gets a job offer from his dream workplace — Bell Labs — and he’s giddy as a schoolboy about it. Unfortunately, during his background check for the job, they find out about Midge’s arrests. Bell Labs doesn’t care in the slightest, but it is quite the bombshell to drop on the uptight Mr. Weissman.

His zoning out during a family dinner while he contemplates what to do about this newfound information is a perfect juxtaposition with the two underground record collectors deciding to turn a recording of Midge’s first Gaslight performance into an album. Because that’s another bomb just waiting to be dropped on the Upper West Side.

Odds and Ends

I will repeat that I cannot get enough of Drina and Rose.

Rose: “If the secretary were just out of the picture, Joel would come back.”

Drina: “You want her out of the picture? I have cousins. They have skills.”

Rose: “I’m sorry?”

Drina: “Nothing.”

Rose: “Being a divorcee is terrible, yes, but being on your second marriage is —”

Drina: “Worse.”

Rose: “So much worse. Second marriage says failure. At least divorcee sounds continental. It’d be better if Joel had died. Then she’d be a widow; at least there’s dignity in that.”

Drina: “You want Joel to die? Again with the cousins.”

Rose: “I don’t understand.”

Drina: “OK, I give up.”

Susie: “You’re not an idiot! Just drop this doe-eyed Bambi thing right now. I’m so sick of you acting all innocent. ‘Oh, I don’t know how the world works ’cause I’m a housewife and I wear four layers of petticoats.’ It is tired and it is weak, and you are not tired and you are not f*cking weak. And if you wanna be a comic, you are gonna have to grow the f*ck up right now!”

"What would you do if your entire family, and your hometown, set you up to find love?" That's the question Ashley Williams poses in the first Small Town Setup trailer, coming to Hallmark+ in 2025. And if anyone has the answer, I have no doubt it's Hallmark — if anyone knows about warm, cozy, and sappy romance it's them! Even if you're not a huge reality dating show fan (or if you couldn't stop watching Reese Witherspoon's Love in Fairhope) this is one January TV show you won't want to miss.

Here's everything we know about Hallmark's dating show Small Town Setup, hosted by Ashley Williams.

'Small Town Setup' puts you right in a Hallmark movie.

All six episodes of Small Town Setup premieres on Hallmark+ on Thursday, January 2, 2025, and is hosted by Ashley Williams, who you'll recognize from movies like Falling Together and Two Tickets to Paradise as well as How I Met Your Mother.

Just like your favorite Hallmark movies are all about finding love, Small Town Setup focuses on singles coupling up. The show will follow a single who "has made it in the big city, but has yet to find love." And their concerned parents (definitely a Hallmark trope and an IRL trope...) get the whole neighborhood involved in finding three potential matches.

"When the singleton arrives home for a visit, they are presented with dating options curated by their hometown. After three dates, will they find love in their hometown? Or head back to the big city? All is revealed at a big town hall event, full of heart, warmth, and a few laughs along the way."

Okay, getting the entire town involved in my love life sounds crazy, but the whole community coming together for a town hall event sounds exactly like the kind of sweet and sappy event my life needs. (Listen!! Dating as a 20-something in the city is harder than I expected...)

Throughout the trailer we see our singles looking for love around their hometown, going on small town dates, and finding connection in the most unexpected places. Yeah...I'll be tuning in — especially since Small Town Setup is totally giving Gilmore Girls.

Sullivan's Crossing season 2 just wrapped up on The CW, but we're not saying goodbye to any of our favorite characters just yet — at least, I hope so. I've been worried sick about Sully (Scott Patterson) since the finale ended with him trapped in the diner as it went up in flames, but Deadline confirms Sullivan's Crossing season 3 will premiere in 2025, meaning we don't have to wait multiple years to reunite with Maggie (Morgan Kohan), Cal (Chad Michael Murray), and the rest of the gang — and find out what happens to Sully (like SOME shows).

Here's everything we know about Sullivan's Crossing season 3, coming in 2025 and starring Morgan Kohan & Chad Michael Murray.

Will there be a season 3 for Sullivan's Crossing?

Yes, Sullivan's Crossing season 3 is on its way! “We are so excited to return to Sullivan’s Crossing next year for a third season,” Brad Schwartz, CW's President, tells Deadline. “Roma, this talented cast, and the entire creative team have built an incredible world full of emotionally charged storytelling that has resonated with viewers over the last two years. And tonight’s season finale includes a can’t-miss cliffhanger that will leave fans clamoring for more.”

Showrunner and executive producer Roma Roth (who's also behind Virgin River) expressed how excited she is to return to the Crossing too! “I am beyond thrilled that we get to continue telling this beautiful story about love and family with this extraordinary cast,” she says. “The love and support from both the fans and The CW has been overwhelming, and we can’t wait to show them what we have in store next.”

How to watch season 3 of Sullivan's Crossing?

Sullivan's Crossing season 3 will premiere on The CW in 2025! You can watch seasons 1 and 2 on The CW now (and rewatch until new episodes drop).

What happened in the Sullivan's Crossing season 2 ending?

Y'all know it's never a dull day at the Crossing (like seriously, can we please give Cal, Maggie, and Sully a BREAK?). In the Sullivan's Crossing season 2 finale, Sully and his friends successfully win the auction for the Crossing, meaning it's staying in the family (along with Sully's new partners Frank and Edna) and not going to Glenn.

Maggie finally tells Cal she's in love with him and they share the kiss we've all been waiting for. But before the episode ends, the group learns that the diner's caught on fire — and Finn and Clover are trapped inside. Sully and Cal run inside to get everyone to safety, and while Cal returns with Finn in tow, Sully remains inside as an explosion goes off. ("You have got to be kidding me," we all say in unison.) After so much back-and-forth in his relationship with Maggie, we can't say goodbye to him yet! But we'll have to wait for Sullivan's Crossing season 3 to see just what happens.

As much as I love celebrity couples, I love celebrity sibling relationships even more. And Elle and Dakota Fanning are two sisters I've grown up watching since I first saw Dreamer in 2005. Considering Elle Fanning is only five months older than me, and I have a sister of my own, this is one relationship that feels particularly familiar. And while Elle has also watched Dakota Fanning act since we were kids, Dakota just revealed seeing Elle onscreen is just as special for her.

Here's why Dakota & Elle Fanning get emotional seeing each other onscreen.

Elle remembers "sobbing" during one particularly emotional Dakota Fanning movie.

“When Elle’s in anything, it makes me feel it deeper,” Dakota Fanning said at TheWrap’s Power Women Summit on December 3. “She never can fully disappear into a character totally for me as her sister. She obviously does an amazing job, but I’m always gonna see my little sister a little bit.”

And Elle is just as touched by Dakota's roles, and remembers "uncontrollably sobbing" after seeing Now Is Good, a movie where Dakota's character was dying of cancer. “Because it was my sister, I had a real traumatic reaction after that premiere and the screening,” Elle says. “Obviously the acting, but it was something felt on a deeper level.”

“I’m doing this job, I’m an actor because my sister started before me and I watched her,” Elle continues. “I wanted to do exactly what my big sister wanted to do.”

And their movies have also made an impact on everyone who watches them.

When Brit + Co caught up with Dakota Fanning at the world premiere of The Watchers, I had to ask about one of her most iconic movies: Uptown Girls. "I love it," she says of TikTok memes and edits giving the movie new life. "It's nostalgic for people who are kind of around my age, who grew up watching that movie, I think it's like a comfort movie for people. And so I love that people are still revisiting it and loving it. And maybe now that everyone's older [they're] understanding different things about it."

Dakota starred opposite Brittany Murphy, who also had roles in movies like Clueless, 8 Mile, and Girl, Interrupted. Brittany passed away in 2009 when Dakota was 15. "I loved Brittany so much and I still miss her," she says. "So anytime that she has, you know, a moment where people think about her is also nice."

You can see Elle Fanning in A Complete Unknown, in theaters December 25, and you can also stream Dakota Fanning's new show The Perfect Couple on Netflix now.
