#MakerCrushMonday: Francesca of Lemonwood Imprints Thinks You’re Totally Spongeworthy

If you follow us on Instagram, you’ve probably caught sight of a punny print or two by today’s crush-worthy maker, Francesca Greggs. Her company Lemonwood Imprints is all about balancing beautiful, well-intentioned design with cleverness, originality and, most importantly, FUN.

I had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with Francesca chatting with her about why she loves to make, while sipping on spiked milkshakes and commiserating over the downfall of Skymall. Read on to learn all about how she got started and why she recommends taking advice from Steve Martin’s character in The Jerk. For a peek behind the scenes of our SF walkabout, head here. And don’t forget to visit Lemonwood’s section of the B+C Shop. Now, let’s meet this maker!

What inspires you? Why do you love to design, create and make?

I’m inspired all the time, which is one of the best parts of my job. Classic sources of inspiration for me though are vintage toy packaging and children’s books, retro signage, architecture, classic cars, and film and travel. I activate a different part of my brain when I’m designing, and it’s one of the few things in life I can focus on for hours without getting distracted.

How did you start Lemonwood Imprints?

To be honest, Lemonwood Imprints was founded out of my deep love for beer. I was trying to teach myself more about different brewing styles, beer histories, and glassware specifics and ended up illustrating an infographic just for my own understanding. Some of my friends wanted to buy the illustration as a print and it got me thinking about the idea of selling my artwork on a larger scale. Lemonwood Imprints is now up and running as a full service gift and stationery brand with the intention to bring beauty, levity and delight to others.

Tell us more about you.

I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and have been lucky to be able try out a number of different cities — DC, New York, Dublin, Paris, Beijing and now SF & LA. I actually grew up being passionate about film and began editing in high school. I continued to study film through college but at some point along the way developed a love of illustration and graphic design. I started working freelance immediately after school in New York and have been motivated to illustrate ever since.

What’s one piece of advice you’d share with other makers?

You have to be fearless enough to find your own creative voice before anyone will listen to it. I see a number of talented creatives sacrificing their originality to align with an on-trend or overdone aesthetic. Any project is an opportunity to push a boundary and make a unique statement, and it’s okay to fail. You just have to trust that you’ll pick yourself up and do better next time. Steve Martin says “Be so good they can’t ignore you,” and there’s no better person to take advice from than The Jerk.

Tell us how technology has changed and supported what you do.

Without technology my job simply wouldn’t exist. Not only do I depend on it for reproducing my illustrations, but it also provides a marketplace for artists to share and sell their work. It connects me to my customers, helps me reach out to other designers, and allows me to try and have a much further-reaching resonance than I would otherwise.

What’s on your studio playlist?

I share a lot of musical tastes with everyone’s dads: The Doobie Brothers, Bob Seger, Al Green, etc. I’m not 65 all the time though and am always in the mood for the likes of Missy Elliot, Nas, and Sade. I love jazz, too. Chet Baker and Miles Davis are my go-tos in the morning.

How do you get into the creative flow? How does it feel?

The best part of the creative flow is when my hands and hustle are in sync. I’m always trying out new concepts for prints and cards, and some afternoons I will design for hours to no avail. Other mornings though, I’ll be drinking coffee and everything will align and the art will emerge just how I imagined it or take on a life of its own and be even better. There’s no formula for this obviously, I think it’s just giving yourself the space and time to play with your ideas.

What do you love about teaching people to make? And inspiring people who don’t think they are traditionally creative?

The most creative thing I love helping people with is their decor. I hate when people tell me they’re not creative. Everyone is; it’s just about getting out of the mindset that creativity is defined by a rooted set of activities or professions. There is an element to creativity in everything. Balancing financials is creative problem solving. Cooking, making a sale, crossword puzzle solving, picking up girls at bars — it all requires challenging your mind to think differently and try new strategies until something works. Celebrate it.

Hailee Steinfeld is no stranger to stealing scenes in movies, but her latest role in Ryan Coogler's Sinners is full of sexy and horrifying moments that'll leave audiences begging for more. Based on clips floating around the internet, the historical horror is set to provide a stage for Hailee's bewitching performance. Perhaps what makes us even more intrigued is how delighted the True Grit actress is about playing a character that'll have viewers talking long after the credits roll.

Scroll to see how Hailee Steinfeld feels about Sinners and learn more about the electrifying new movie!

What is 'Sinners' about?

Warner Bros. Pictures

When twin brothers Smoke and Stack return home for a new beginning, they're initially met with welcome arms. But as daylight turns to dusk and gives way to nightfall, unspeakable horrors expose themselves to the townspeople. Evil not only consumes everything in its path, it also changes Smoke and Stack in ways they could've never prepared for.

It's set in the 1930s South which means we'll get dialect, fashion, music, and more themes from that time period.

Who's Hailee Steinfeld starring as?

Warner Bros. Pictures

Hailee Steinfeld will be starring as Mary, the love interest of Stack. Since not much is known about her outside of that, we're assuming their romance is forbidden. What we do know is Hailee's a fan of her character and the overall themes of Sinners.

According to PEOPLE, the actress shared more of her thoughts in her newsletter Beau Society March 28. She wrote, "...This role is far removed from what I've done, but that's part of what drew me to it! I feel like I'm stepping into my own more and more as I get older, and this role mirrors that."

She also shared that it didn't take much for her to be a part of Sinners. "The minute I heard Ryan Coogler, I was in. Then I read his script and was like, 'Holy s---, this feels like a massive undertaking.' The story is so complex and layered," calling herself "fortunate and honored to even be remotely considered." So, how does Hailee Steinfeld feel about Sinners as a whole?

She says it's "thrilling and sexy and daring and dangerous — with bold representations."

Who else is starring in 'Sinners?'

Warner Bros. Pictures

Besides Hailee Steinfeld, Sinners has a robust cast that'll make the storyline even more rousing. In no particular order, viewers will see:

  • Michael B. Jordan as Smoke/Stack
  • Jack O'Connell as Remmick
  • Omar Benson Miller as Cornbread
  • Li Jun Li as Grace
  • Jayme Lawson as Pearline
  • Wunmi Mosaku as Annie
  • Delroy Lindo as Delta Slim
  • Lola Kirke as Joan
  • Miles Caton as Sammy

Mom entrepreneur Diane Le designed a blanket/backpack combo with her family hikes and picnics in mind, but after testing the concept, she found it had broader appeal. Not sure where to start the manufacturing process, she asked for help. Thanks to our partnership with Office Depot OfficeMax, we are sharing Diane's founder story and how she learned through Selfmade that networking gets you everywhere.

B + C: What motivated you to start MiniAlps? What problem are you trying to solve for your customers?

DL: For me, it was a product I really wanted for my own personal use and it just didn't exist. I love spending time outdoors with my family but outdoor blankets are so bulky to carry. I remember going on a day hike with my husband and daughter and I had to carry a backpack on my back with our water, food, diapers, sunscreen and supplies and then I had to carry our picnic blanket on the front and hold my dog's leash all while hiking. It was just too much.

I thought "Why can't an outdoor blanket actually be a carrying bag and it can do double duty by carrying my things as well?" That's when MiniAlps was born.

B + C: How has the company evolved since your initial "aha" moment?

DL: Originally, we were only focusing on moms who really liked multitasking products but after testing the concept, we actually found out that late teens and 20-somethings really loved the idea of a stylish blanket/backpack duo. It was perfect for picnic outdoors, wineries, music festivals or just being on the go.

B + C: What startup challenges have you faced along the way?

DL: We've had two really big challenges. First, neither Sharlene Bisram (my co-founder) nor I had ever launched an apparel or outdoor product, so there was a really big learning curve for us in terms of fabrics and performance. We bought so many fabric samples just to make sure we had the right materials. The second was manufacturing. Manufacturing during COVID times has been tricky. We aren't able to travel to meet manufacturers in person, production times are much longer than normal, and shipping times are very delayed.

B + C: What strategies helped you overcome them?

DL: Networking and asking for help has been the best strategy for us. Whenever we run into a challenge, we've reached out to our networks to just ask "Does anyone know someone who knows XYZ?" and we've met many amazing people that way. I think there was a session in Selfmade that talked about that exactly - that being able to network effectively was one of the best ways to grow a business. I'm a big proponent in paying it forward as well. If there's some help someone is looking for, I'm happy to share any information or potential leads with them.

B + C: What would you say are your top successes so far?

DL: Designing a product I'm really happy with is probably my favorite success so far. We've gone through seven different iterations before landing where we are and I'm pretty proud of what we've created. Our bag is everything we wanted it to be: stylish, minimalist, modern, and incredibly practical.

B + C: How have you approached marketing your brand and raising awareness?

DL: We're a startup so we have very limited marketing funds. It's been a fun challenge to figure out how to build our brand on almost no budget. We use Canva for a lot of our branding materials. For awareness, we are active with promoting to our local community and utilizing social media and social ads to drive traffic to our target market.

B + C: What was your most valuable takeaway from Selfmade?

DL: It really does start with mindset. When we had the first course about mindset, I was really confused on why we weren't focusing on more "business" type things first. But as I started building my business, I realized how important it is to be in a positive, winning frame of mind before anything else. It helps you weather all of the ups and downs of startup life.

B + C: Who and what inspires you?

DL: I have so many people in my life that I admire, it's hard to narrow it down! My daughter Camille was born with a rare disease and disability and she inspires me to beat the odds everyday. I also have to shout out to my mentor Sarah Grover, who is just a brilliant marketing and branding guru and Nurit Raich, who has been my incredible coach through a lot of life's challenges. It truly takes a village.

B + C: What's one piece of advice you would give to female entrepreneurs on the brink of starting?

DL: Just get started! Don't let the fear of failure stop you before you even get started.

B + C: What's next for MiniAlps?

DL: We're opening up for pre-orders on our first production run very shortly! Sign up for more information at minialps.com.

B + C: What has receiving the Office Depot OfficeMax scholarship to Selfmade done to help you grow your business?

DL: It has been so helpful to have the support of Office Depot OfficeMax scholarship! It was only through the scholarship I was able to access all of Selfmade's amazing resources, from the networking to the coaches to the sessions, it's been a combination of motivating, inspiring, and supportive. I couldn't imagine launching MiniAlps without Selfmade.

B + C: How have Office Depot OfficeMax services/products helped you accomplish more in your business?

DL: It's honestly not possible to start a business without the right tools and Office Depot OfficeMax has been my go-to source. Their printing services in particular are fantastic; it's high quality, affordable, and a quick turnaround.

Thank you Diane for sharing your story! You can follow MiniAlps at minialps.com and on Facebook.

This story contains major 1923 season finale spoilers!

Okay y'all. I'm still reeling over the fact 1923 season 2 ended with Alex's death. She seemed invincible to me, and I had such hope that Alex and Spencer would spend the rest of their lives together. But after surviving a snowstorm, Alex ended up succumbing to the effects of frostbite and died in Spencer's arms. And all of us (including actors Brandon Sklenar and Julia Schlaepfer) were emotional.

Here's what Brandon Sklenar and Julia Schlaepfer said about Alex and Spencer's long-awaited reunion in the 1923 season finale — and the tragedy that followed.

What happened with Spencer and Alex on 1923?

Even though Spencer loses Alex at the end of 1923 season 2, I am glad they got to have one final reunion, and hold their baby together. "Losing his wife, his best friend, is really f—ing tragic," Brandon Sklenar tells The Hollywood Reporter. "The hospital stuff was incredibly emotional. Really, we had to come up with jokes because it was super heavy and it was a lot of crying. Too much crying, just crying all the time. A lot of crying!"

And the tears weren't just saved for those sad scenes; Brandon also cried when Alex and Spencer reunite in a dreamy 1920s afterlife where they can dance for eternity.

“It just hits me right in the heart every time, even just thinking about it now,” Brandon says. “I remember filming it and standing in the corner and just having to wipe my eyes because it was so beautiful."

How did Spencer and Alex reunite in 1923 season 2?

Fans were not happy about the fact these two spent all of 1923 season 2 apart — and Julia herself admitted to Brit + Co she "barely" saw Brandon while filming, and that "it was very much like, suddenly we were ripped apart. But that's what the characters are going through...It was very helpful as an actor because that's what they're going through as well."

Channeling that IRL experience also helped for Alex and Spencer's reunion; When Alex is stranded after a snowstorm and Spencer spots her from his train, he jumps into the snow to literally sweep her off her feet and carry her to safety. And the desperate and emotional reunion was desperate and emotional for a reason.

“It was the first scene we shot together this season, which I’m sure was not by accident,” Julia added in her and Brandon's conversation with THR. “When we got to film that scene, for both me and Alex, I felt like I exhaled.”

Did Alex get to meet Jacob Dutton?

But in a classic Taylor Sheridan plot twist, Alex and Spencer aren't together for long. Spencer sets off to help Cara and Zane protect the Yellowstone ranch, leaving Alex and Jacob to head to the hospital. And Julia loved having Harrison Ford with her during those intense scenes.

"It was everything I ever could have dreamed of, times a million. He took such care of me that day when I was fully intending on letting him completely take the lead," she says. "I was so excited and I learned so much watching him. But I think he knew what the content of the scene was, and he wanted to make sure I was good. He knew when to crack jokes at the right time to keep things light. At the end of the scene, we both just stared at each other and cried, and he held me while I was on that bed with this baby."

"I’m really still in the process of grieving everything that she went through, everything that I went through with her, because you really become one," she continues. "She’s a piece of me forever, and I don’t quite know how I will process everything this season, but I’m just trying to enjoy how beautiful and special playing Alex was. It was truly the gift of a lifetime."

Will Brandon Sklenar play Spencer Dutton again?

Even though Spencer and Alex's romance has come to an end, we are getting a 1944 — and Brandon's totally down to return.

"Yeah, definitely. I’d do it. [Their son John Dutton's] got to learn how to do things. Someone’s got to show him," he says, to which Julia replies, "I’ll come back and haunt you both."

Is 1923 Season 3 Coming? What To Know About The Duttons' Future — & The Next Yellowstone Spinoffs.
