Birchbox, watch your back. A new beauty box startup is on the market — and this one has an international edge.
It’s called Memebox (pronounced me-me) and it’s fully composed of Korean beauty products. Korean beauty has been making its way stateside for some time now. Urban Outfitters is now even carrying products from Korean brands like Tony Moly and Holika Holika. While there are definitely some super wacky finds (like egg soap and lip balm infused with snail filtrate), the country’s beauty industry is mostly revered as technologically advanced with a focus on science and innovation. Hey, if science can make us the perfect bronzer, we’ll take it.
Memebox differs from Birchbox in a couple of ways. First, they do not yet offer any kind of subscription service. Instead, each box is specially curated and available for purchase individually (hello, Christmas presents). Also, you won’t find a bunch of tiny samples in your box, but rather four to seven full-sized items + deluxe samples. The products will always be makeup, hair, body or skin care related.
There are three boxes to choose from: the original Memebox, a Superbox and a Collaboration Box. None of the products included in the Memebox ($23) are ever fully disclosed, but if you’re a K-beauty newbie, this box — which includes an introductory mix of four to six products — is probably your best bet. The Superbox ($19-32) has an always changing theme and purpose (they just released a Thanksgiving and eyebrow themed box). And lastly, the Collaboration Box ($23) is a joint effort between Memebox and a beauty expert who handpicks some of their favorite K-beauty items. A new Collaboration Box comes out monthly.
In addition to trying something totally new, let’s also talk about how adorable the packaging of these products is. At first glance you might even mistake some of them for toys. You’ll find lip balms shaped like apples and nail polish bottles cloaked in flowers. Averaging $23 a box, it might be a bit expensive to replace your monthly Birchbox fix, but considering they send you full-sized products you might really only need one every couple months… Sexy Bean Cleanser, here we come.
