Emma Watson and Mischa Barton’s Online Privacy Invasion Is a Scary Wakeup Call

This week, The O.C. actress Mischa Barton revealed that she has been a victim of revenge porn. As we’ve seen recently with celebs from Leslie Jones to Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, and, just yesterday, Emma Watson, too often there’s a creep who will share photos of women with the public in order to shame and humiliate them.

Sharing sexually explicit photos of someone else without their permission is called revenge porn. Sometimes the photos aren’t necessarily sent to another person, but sit in online storage where they can be hacked. But many times, revenge porn is distributed by ex-partners looking to shame or intimidate their exes, and that’s what Barton says she’s dealing with right now.

According to TMZ, Barton claims her ex-boyfriend used a hidden camera to take nude images of her, which he then tried to sell to porn sites. Gross.

The rich and famous are not the only ones vulnerable to having their private photos exposed, however. According to a 2014 study from McAfee, almost 50 percent of adults use their phones to send “intimate content” to others. That means about half of us are walking around with sensitive photos that someone could expose without consent.

While women should not have to fear that their naked bodies will be seen by anyone without their consent and there’s nothing wrong with taking and sharing nude photos, there’s never any guarantee a malicious hacker or vindictive ex won’t violate women’s rights to privacy.

Unfortunately, women who are victimized by revenge porn often suffer negative emotional consequences. In a 2015 study that examined the experiences of female revenge porn victims, women reported feeling embarrassed, humiliated, and fearful after intimate images of them were exposed. Some of the women experienced post-traumatic stress disorder and became suicidal.

Fortunately, most (though not all) states have laws that address revenge porn. Thirty-five states and Washington DC have legislation on the books that give rights to victims of revenge porn. But that leaves a startling 15 states whose victims have no clear legal recourse.

Apart from reporting revenge porn to the police and seeking legal action in states where victims have legal rights, there are other actions that victims can take to have their photos removed from the internet.

Know your rights

According to the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative, the first step is to check out the policies of the platform where the images were shared. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram all have clear policies surrounding nudity on their sites, for example, so do a little bit of research and report the photos to the site. CCRI also recommends documenting the revenge porn (take screenshots) so a full account is available, in case you want to take legal action.

Dr. Charlotte Laws, author, revenge porn victims advocate, and former revenge porn victim herself, tells usover email that there are myriad steps victims can take. Along with the CCRI’s suggestions, Laws says you can contact search engines to have private images removed from searches as well. Laws also advises victims to put pressure on anyone and everyone involved with the revenge porn: Contact the site’s host company, and friends and family members of the person who published the revenge porn, and urge them to help you get the images taken down.

For those who want to pursue legal action, Laws says that there are lawyers who will take revenge porn cases pro-bono, and support groups that can offer additional advice and guidance. The CCRI is a great resource too.

Laws also says that there are actions anyone can take to safeguard their privacy from would-be revenge porn perpetrators. “Put a Google alert on your name and take screenshots of all evidence and harassment,” Laws tells us, and “Take pains to cover cameras on computers in the future and to have complicated online passwords (that change every few months).” Laws also says that copyrighting images is a good preventative measure — if anyone shares them without permission, they will be in violation of copyright laws.

Most importantly, Laws tells us that victims are not alone, and that they have resources available to help them fight back.

With the welcoming of colder months and it's much colder weather, you get a lot of changes. The good: PSL's, all the chunky knit sweaters, and cozy fall candles. The bad: allergies, dry skin, and chilly nights. And while I'll quickly embrace all of the good, one thing I continue to struggle with year after year is dry skin, specifically around my hands.

On top of regularly struggling with dry skin, as soon as September and October hits everything just gets worst. The harsh weather makes my hands so dry, wrinkled, and crackly. I'm starting to notice more and more sagging skin in areas with thinner skin, like my neck or my hands — which is so not what I'm going for.

In order to get ahead of the problem and in an attempt to treat it, I talked to the experts to Sara Millecam (Founder at Lash Lift Store), Nashville-based dermatologist Dr. Natalie Curcio, and Jessica Iturzaeta (Licensed Esthetician of Simply Jess Skincare) to get the inside scoop on how to treat wrinkles and dry skin! Keep on reading to hear all about their thoughts!

What type of products should you use for dry or wrinkled hands?

Sora Shimazaki

Jessica Iturzaeta, of Simply Jess Skincare, gave me the best advice for what ingredients and qualities to look for when it comes to treating dry or wrinkled hands. She said that an ultra moisturizing, cream-based product is going to be the most nourishing for you! Iturzaeta also let us know that she loves ingredients like ceramides and glycerin, as they're humectants — AKA they "promote the retention of water," according to Merriam-Webster.

Iturzaeta also suggested adding some oil to the cream and really let that absorb into the skin when you're treating dry and chapped hands. Doing this at night — almost like a mask for the hands — gives the products time to really absorb and repair the skin!

Another tip? SPF, SPF, SPF. If you're like me, then you're an avid SPF user on your face, but didn't know to apply it to your hands as regularly! Never neglect the neck and hands when applying your sunscreen for the day — this is key!

Supergoop Handscreen

Speaking of sunscreen, this incredible "handscreen" (get it?) is a largely loved product by many. It's perfect for making sure your hands are covered and staying protected in the sun from any UV rays, which will also prevent wrinkles! This sunscreen is made to be the perfect texture for your hands, leaving them with no grease or oil residue!

Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting Exfoliant

Iturzaeta says that she always tell her clients to not only treat the hands with moisturizer, but also adding exfoliating products to treat the wrinkles, like alpha hydroxy acids. These will help to make sure you're keeping the hands nice and smooth, before you go in with additional moisturizers and oils. This product is one of her fave exfoliants to start off your hand skincare routine! You'll definitely want to add this to your list!

Eucerin Advanced Repair Hand Cream

Sara Millecam, Founder at Lash Lift Store, says that when looking to moisturize and rejuvenate dry wrinkled hands, you want to focus on active ingredients that will hydrate and repair the skin. Shea butter and ceramides deeply moisturize skin, while hyaluronic acid adds volume and hydration. Glycerin is also great, given how it takes moisture from the air and transfers it to the skin. She says regarding age control, retinol, peptides and antioxidants like vitamins C and E assist with collagen synthesis and shielding from pollution respectively!

She recommends Eucerin Advanced Repair Hand Cream especially because it contains a blend of ceramides, glycerin, and urea that delivers deep moisture! We love the sound of that!

Amazon

O'Keeffe's Working Hands Hand Cream

O'Keeffe's Working Hands Hand Cream is also another excellent product that Millecam recommended for us! She says that it is praised for moisturizing even the most dehydrated, sore skin because of the high glycerin level in it! It will work hard to give you buttery soft and smooth hands in no time! We love this one!

Amazon

StriVectin Volumizing Hand Cream

This hand cream is a fantastic product recommended by Millecam. She explained that it offers age-related benefits such as improvement of skin laxity through powerful peptides and moisturizers, slowing down the occurrence of dynamic surface wrinkles over time. This means that it will work hard to not only prevent future wrinkles, but also help diminish the existing ones you have already!

Lovely Skin

DefenAge 10 Lux Cream

For dry, wrinkled hands, Nashville-based dermatologist Dr. Curcio recommends using the 10 Luxe Hand and Body Cream. She notes that using this product, both alone and in combination with skin rejuvenation procedures, can help reduce skin crepiness, tighten skin, and improve the overall quality of the skin. This cream belongs to the category of “performance skincare,” which provides anti-aging benefits on a global scale. Dr. Curcio says that it's a cream with a rich, luxurious texture, elegant feel, clean smell of natural ingredients, and fragrance-free.

It's also super fast-acting! The first results will usually appear immediately to one week after the first application and include a feeling of increased hydration and decreased dryness, which makes the skin feel better! After a couple weeks, you will notice a huge difference in your skin!

SkinCeuticals

SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore

This patented anti-aging cream won BeautyInc's greatest skincare award, so it's among some of the best products you can get when it comes to anti-aging. That's why we had to add it to the list! While we want to always take care of our face and neck, we can't neglect the hands as well! So, apply this rapid anti-aging cream on your hands after using it on your face, and you'll start seeing incredible change!

First Aid Beauty Collagen Cream

First Aid Beauty has to be one of my all-time favorite brands ever. They help treat so many of my skin problems like eczema, washing, dryness — and now also hand skincare! This firming cream is filled with collagen, which will help to fill in any lines or wrinkles that you may have on your hands. It will also be great for firming those areas where skin might be sagging or loose. Put this on your neck for firming, then add to your hands. It's a simple addition to your skincare routine that's just that easy!

Gilmore Girls might provide us with comfort, but it also provides us with plenty of guidance. Whether it influences us in a silly way, like adding "Oy! With the poodles already" to our daily vocabulary, or it inspires us to write our own book like Rory does in A Year in the Life, there's no doubt that this is one powerful TV show. And whether you love Rory Gilmore or you think she's totally spoiled, there are quite a few life lessons we can learn from her journey as a character. Here are the top 6.

Welcome The People You Love & Respect Into Your Decisions

Warner Bros. Television

Without a doubt, the most painful part of Gilmore Girls is when Lorelei and Rory have their big fight after Rory drops out of Yale, and don't talk for months during season 5 and 6. While fights are often a two-way street, there is something to be said for the fact the argument follows a huge life-altering decision that Rory made without Lorelai. While she's an adult who is able to make her own decisions, it's important to know when a decision should be made on its own — and when you should seek guidance.

Don't Miss Important Celebrations

Warner Bros. Television

Speaking of honoring the people you love, the episode where Rory goes to see Jess in New York has always bothered me because of the fact that Rory ends up totally missing Lorelai's graduation (when she could have gone to NYC any other day!). This is such a huge moment in Lorelai's life and in the show and Rory's just...not there. When you know your family and friends' love languages, you know what will make them feel the most loved, but also what will hurt them the most. And this one episode reminds me to make sure my priorities are in order, and to always check my calendar.

Don't Avoid Hard Conversations

Warner Bros. Television

Rory would've avoided so much drama and heartache (for herself and others) if she had been honest with her boyfriends instead of cheating on them. While she's with Dean, she kisses Jess. When she's with Logan, she also kisses Jess. Plus, she ends up sleeping with Dean after he's married to another woman. While these choices aren't the direct cause of all her relationship problems, Rory's tendency to avoid conflict only makes her problems worse.

Be Overprepared

Warner Bros. Television

One of my least favorite moments from A Year in the Life is when Rory, who's supposedly a journalist, shows up to a super important meeting without any pitches. Not a single one! She doesn't come across as confident or self-assured, and it feels like she expects everyone in her adult life to coddle her the way her grandparents (and sometimes Lorelai) did. While these moments are cringy, they do serve as a good reminder to be prepared. And when you realize you're not? Hold your chin high.

Pretending To Be The Main Character Is Fun — Until It Hurts Someone

Warner Bros. Television

Even the most dedicated Gilmore Girls fan will admit Rory is pretty spoiled. I have to admit that if I was Rory Gilmore, with an entire town that loved me, my ego might be pretty big. But watching her disrupt an entire class by freaking out about a missed test in one episode, and then pitching a fit about a student taking "her" study tree in another shows that Rory has no real understanding that she's not the main character everywhere she goes. And assuming everyone will bend to her will makes life very difficult.

Not Believing In Herself

Warner Bros. Television

But perhaps Rory's greatest mistake is allowing the opinion of someone like Mitchum Huntzberger, who Rory has no relationship, history, or mentorship with, to totally derail her life. While straight-up telling her she's not journalist material isn't the kindest choice, Rory allows his words to influence everything she thinks and does instead of proving them wrong.

What do you think Rory Gilmore's biggest mistake was? What's the most special life lesson you've taken from Gilmore Girls? Let us know in the comments!
